But that’s not the only analogy between late-1960s China and 2018 America. One of the mainsprings of the Cultural Revolution was a vindictive aged actress out for revenge on the producers and actresses who had cost her roles back in her prime. Mrs. Mao, Jiang Qing, had been a movie starlet in 1930s Shanghai, when she built up a lifetime of grudges that she acted upon when her husband let her take control of Chinese popular culture in the 1960s.

Her squads beat up aging film figures and reedited old movies to conform to new political prejudices. She would have considered the recent American custom of terrified novelists hiring “sensitivity readers” to censor their manuscripts for them a step in the right direction.

Pakistan’s government called for a meeting with U.S. Ambassador David Hale the day after President Donald Trump blasted its government in a tweet Monday morning.

This is the sort of Normal Political Maneuver that made Obama and his minions very nervous. It indicated that he might have to take a position or make a decision or something, which is not what he was President to do.

Trump said it is time the U.S. stop giving Pakistan money in the tweet and claimed the country has given shelter for terrorists from Afghanistan. He said that the country has only given “lies & deceit” in return for U.S. aid.

The president’s tweet sparked instant reaction from Pakistan, as the government summoned Hale to its foreign office Monday to explain Trump’s tweet, according to Reuters.

This is the ‘normal’ diplomatic reaction to such a ‘gaffe’, in which government functionaries from the administrative state are encouraged to rein in elected politicians who are rocking the boat. Hale is supposed to walk back from what the President said and explain that it was ‘taken out of context’ etc. etc. I’m hoping Hale is a Trumpkin who will explain that the President meant what he said, and that the Pakistani government had better get used to the idea that there’s a New Sheriff in Town. We’ll see.

Actress Alexandra Shipp, who has a white mother and a black father, found herself the target of attacks on social media from black activists who were furious that Shipp will be reprising her role as Storm in the upcoming X-Men film. The flak came from “dark skinned rights” advocates who don’t think the biracial Shipp is “black enough” to play the role (ironically a role originated on screen by the biracial Halle Berry). When Shipp called the attacks “racism” and “pure hate,” she was reprimanded by anti-Trump author and blogger Nina Perez (a dark-skinned black woman), who scolded the actress for dismissing the seriousness of “colorism” against “darker-skinned black people.” When Shipp shot back that “90% of the racism I’ve experienced in my lifetime has been at the hands of fellow black people,” more black activists piled on. Now, Shipp is no closet AmRen fan; her pinned tweet for all of 2017 reads, “if you’re a member or sympathize for the alt-right you can unfollow tf outta me. Dnt watch my movies dnt b a fan fuck it dnt breathe.” This is just a case of a bunch of black leftists brawling over who’s blacker and more “anti-racist.”
