French President Emmanuel Macron sharply criticized Poland Friday, saying Prime Minister Beata Szydlo’s opposition to a revamp of European Union rules on cheap labor is one of numerous policies that are marginalizing her country.
In other words, Poland is being insufficiently socialist to suit him. In this context, ‘marginalized’ means ‘not allowed to sit with the Cool Kids at lunch in the high school cafeteria’, or however the French do these things.
Speaking in Bulgaria’s Black Sea port of Varna at the beginning of a European diplomatic blitz, Macron campaigned to end the “social dumping” that he says occurs when workers from low-wage countries are hired in other EU nations at their own pay levels for extended periods. He wants to shorten the period for the exemption.
‘Dumping’ is the smear-term used by governments and their enablers when they artificially inflate a price above that of the free market and other people don’t comply with their plans.
Szydlo issued a sharp response, telling a Polish website that Macron’s comments were “arrogant” and seek to “split” the EU. She reiterated that her government won’t stop defending the rights of Polish workers, arguing that Macron’s proposals would breach fundamental EU principles of free movement of labor and services.
This is Polish for ‘suck on it, Macron’.

Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Jay Gonzalez (D) is ready to raise taxes. Residents of Massachusetts, consider yourself warned.
Gonzales posted a video to Facebook this week after receiving a copy of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. The Pledge, which ATR offers to every candidate and incumbent for state and federal office, is a written promise to a lawmaker’s constituents detailing their commitment to oppose all tax increases.
In his brief video, Gonzalez criticizes Grover Norquist, President and founder of ATR, for his resolution to limit government. After admitting that Massachusetts is “the most expensive state in the nation”, Mr. Gonzales affirmed his support for a tax increase.
“So Grover, here’s what I say to your Taxpayer Protection Pledge” said Mr. Gonzalez as he proceeded to rip up the printed document at the end of the video.
Refreshing honesty, especially for a Democrat. (They don’t call it ‘Taxachusetts’ for nothing.)

Bureaucracies have successfully evaded congressional budget oversight for years by illegally hiring contract labor to take the place of employees, according to a Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) report released Tuesday.
Bureaucracies commit thousands of felonies a day, misappropriating funds not approved by Congress and expanding agency influence at a time when government agencies should cut back.
Bureaucracies freeze hiring new employees, ideally to stop expansion and cut costs, when under pressure to reform or adapt to budget cuts. Many agencies continue to grow despite budget cutbacks, however, by illegally hiring outside contract labor.
My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

During the anxiety-ridden 19th and 20th centuries in particular, Chinese reformers of multiple political persuasions engaged in thoroughgoing critical reevaluations of Chinese civilization in an attempt to diagnose the cause of China’s woes, and to identify which aspects of Chinese culture would need to be transformed to ensure their country’s transition into a new global order intact. Targets of criticism included Confucianism, government institutions, and the patriarchal family unit, among many others.
For a small but vocal group of Chinese modernizers, some of the most impassioned criticism was trained on the Chinese language. Chen Duxiu (1879-1942), a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party, famously called for a “literary revolution” to overthrow the “ornate, sycophantic literature of the aristocracy,” and to promote the “plain, expressive literature of the people!” “In order to abolish Confucian thought,” the linguist Qian Xuantong (1887-1939) wrote, “first we must abolish Chinese characters. And if we wish to get rid of the average person’s childish, naive, and barbaric ways of thinking, the need to abolish characters becomes even greater.” The celebrated writer Lu Xun (1881-1936) was yet another member of this anti-character chorus. “Chinese characters,” he argued, “constitute a tubercle on the body of China’s poor and laboring masses, inside of which the bacteria collect. If one does not clear them out, then one will die. If Chinese characters are not exterminated, there can be no doubt that China will perish.” For these reformers, abolishing characters would constitute a foundational act of Chinese modernity, unmooring China from its immense and anchoring past.
Actually, the problem seems to be the ideographic writing system rather than the language itself.

While software developers might write algorithms for sorting, human and other organisms’ cells have their own biological ways for organizing the molecules inside them – such as how the proteins inside neurons are created in one spot and moved elsewhere.
…
Along that vein, researchers have shown pre-programmed DNA origami can perform tasks such as travelling in a line picking up molecular “cargo”. In the previous academic work with DNA robots, though, humans have had to give intermittent instructions (such as adding molecules into a test tube to produce a response) or they couldn’t see more than a couple tasks performed.

Mere hours after Hurricane Irma, Miami-Dade County was ticketing residents for building code violations on their wrecked properties.
Celso Perez was helping his neighbors remove some fallen trees blocking their street when a county code enforcer rolled up and issued him a safety notice for having a downed fence. “I laughed,” Perez tells WSVN-TV. “I thought he was kidding. ‘You are kidding right? We just had a hurricane six hours ago.'”
It wasn’t a joke. The official told Perez that the downed fence—which encloses a pool—was a safety hazard, and that if it wasn’t fixed by the time he returned, Perez would be hit with a fine. The official then hung the safety citation on the portion of Perez’s fence that remained standing, leaving him and his neighbors to finish clearing the debris from their street.

ZMan lays it out.
Yesterday’s post could have been much longer, as there are many angles to the modern American skins game. In the fullness of time, there will be many books written on the subject or at least using it as a launching pad in analyzing the late America collapse. One point of entry is belief. People are believing machines. They will organize themselves around a set of beliefs, even if those beliefs are insane. That is what we are seeing in modern America. Christianity has faded, so something new filled the void.
That something new is a grab bag of ideas borrowed from Cultural Marxism, hung like ornaments on the burnt out husk that is Christian universalism. That is modern Progressivism. Cultural Marxism, by itself, has never made much sense, but inflated with the zeal of universalism, it is a very powerful force in modern society. It certainly does not make a lot of sense and it does not offer anything as pleasing as an afterlife, but for the true believer, it fills the void that Christianity once filled.
That’s most obvious when it comes to race. Progressives are endlessly chanting that race is not real. They are also endlessly chanting that racism is the most dangerous evil spirit in their hierarchy of evil. Most of what is going on today is based in their belief that whites are racists, simply because whites have acted to benefit whites. The trouble for Progs, though, is that this contradicts their support for non-whites. Everywhere you turn, non-whites are out flying their team’s flag and cheering for their side against the honky.

London simply does not have the capacity to track all of the twenty-three thousand terror suspects that reside in the country.
Tony Blair’s trick of opening the borders to swamp the country with New Labor voters has backfired against everybody.
With explosives plots still a factor in the UK, what can the UK government do about it? Without a philosophical sea change in its approach to terrorism, not a whole lot more than it’s already doing.

When macOS High Sierra is released to the public next week, the new Apple File System (APFS) feature will be limited to Macs with all-flash built-in storage, which means it won’t work with iMacs that include Fusion Drives.
iMacs with Fusion Drives were converted to APFS during the beta testing process in the first macOS High Sierra beta, but support was removed in subsequent betas and not re-implemented.
This bites big time.
Public Beta testers who had an iMac with a Fusion Drive converted to APFS will need to follow a long list of instructions to convert back to HFS+, including making a Time Machine Backup, creating a bootable installer, and using Disk Utility to reformat their iMacs and reinstall macOS High Sierra.
All together now: ‘Steve wouldn’t have done put up with this.’
I smell a plot to strong-arm people into buying the more expensive all-flash memory machines. But that’s me.

While some of these headlines are misleading, wrongly depicting this incident as a “fight” between two sides, when in fact it was an attack by transgender activists on a member of the feminist group, even inaccurate coverage is better than no coverage. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and the more attention that is focused on this issue, the more people will become aware of the hateful intolerance of transgender activists, who seek to silence their critics. Because facts and logic are against them, they resort to terroristic intimidation tactics against their opponents.
Basic freedoms and important matters of public policy are at stake in this debate, and it is obvious which side is trying to silence dissent by labeling disagreement as “hate.” People need to wake the hell up.

One of the biggest, most embarrassing divorces in the normally quiet world of Washington think tanks blew into the open earlier this month, when writer Barry Lynn and nine others defected from New America. Lynn said they were pushed out of the influential Democratic think tank after he wrote a post this summer criticizing Google, one of its key funders. Anne-Marie Slaughter, who heads the foundation, called the story reporting the news “false”—then wrote a long Medium post walking her charge back.
One thing the Crust does not do is bite the hands that fund it.
Whatever the final trigger for the split, its roots lay far deeper than this summer’s scuffle. The Google controversy marked the most public emergence of an intellectually combative group jostling for a role as the new economic brain of the Democratic Party.
Raising the bar from ‘moron’ to ‘dimwit’. If the Democrat Party has an ‘economic brain’ other than Karl Marx, I have yet to see evidence of it.
Lynn’s group, called Open Markets, has spent six years arguing that the Democrats have become too comfortable with corporate money and power, and need to rally around a new principle: breaking up monopolies. As the party remains locked in a struggle to reboot itself, unable to craft a unifying vision in the Trump era, Lynn and his group are trying to push it into a new fight against global corporate titans, targeting big companies like Google by name, and arguing that it’s time to use federal antitrust law to chip away at their influence. They see the fight as both a boon to democracy and a political framework that could excite voters in a new, more energized populist moment.
But the Democrat Party is all about corporate money and power. These people must not be paying attention.
