Oops: Vogue’s ‘Gender Politics’ Under Fire For ‘Cultural Appropriation’

17th July 2017

Read it.

Cultural appropriation isn’t just for barbeque and white people’s dreadlocks any more. It’s now oppressive towards the gender bending community.  How dare Zayn Malik avoid wearing a ballgown and makeup for Vogue!!

Cosmopolitan contributor Jacob Tobia was significantly peeved by Vogue’s cover shoot of singer Zayn Malik and model Gigi Hadid, because Vogue described the stars as “embracing gender fluidity.” In the liberal universe, there’s no higher compliment, right? Wrong. Why? Because neither of these celebrities are apparently “#GenderfluidGoals.” Ultimately, Vogue committed the mortal sin of “cultural appropriation,” by dressing a woman in a blazer.

You can’t make this shit up.

The Truth About Health Care

17th July 2017

ZMan brings the truth.

This is an iron law of economics. All goods and services are rationed. This is true for health care too. There are no exceptions to this law. Thus, the First Truth of Health Care: No health care plan or system can ever be taken seriously unless it addresses, up front, how it will say “No, you cannot have it” to people who want it. At some point, someone has to tell the patient they cannot have whatever it is they want or need.

In America, rationing is mostly done by price, but increasingly the state is taking over this role. In Britain, most people are denied services by the long lines for those services. The long wait times for basic services is a form of rationing. If you can deliver X per day and the demand is for 2X, you solve this by giving people numbers and having them wait a long time until their number is called. This is socialized medicine in nutshell.

And that says it all, about as simply as it can be said.

Small Reactors Could Kick-Start the Stalled Nuclear Sector

17th July 2017

Read it.

Earlier this year, NuScale Energy took a crucial step forward in its prolonged effort to build 12 scaled-down nuclear reactors on an empty parcel at the Idaho National Laboratory, a sprawling research campus on the outskirts of Idaho Falls (see “Shrinking Nuclear”). The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission agreed to begin the formal process of reviewing the company’s designs for the 600-megawatt plant, which could power a city the size of Boise twice over.

That gives NuScale, based in Portland, Oregon, the inside track on building the country’s first commercial reactors of this type. Known as small modular reactors, or SMRs, they also represent the first substantially new reactor design of any kind to reach this NRC milestone in decades.

Should it Be a Crime to Hurt Allah’s Feelings?

17th July 2017

Jim Goad is not afraid to ask the hard questions.

Is there any evidence in the past 50 years of anyone, anywhere being charged with a “hate crime” for mocking Christianity? If there is, I haven’t seen it. I can’t recall anyone ever getting slapped with a hate-crime enhancement for insulting Christianity. If you make jokes about Jesus, you’re more likely to get offers from Hollywood than you are criminal charges.

Yet over the world, people are being dragged into court for the crime of hurting Allah’s feelings. I’m not quite sure how Allah is able to handle all of the verbal abuse. It must take a toll on him, you know? And since he’s obviously helpless, he needs his supporters to defend him.

Guns and the Prog

17th July 2017

ZMan does some sociology.

The mountain of data in support of liberalized gun laws is beyond dispute. Even if you are not inclined to dig into the details, the fundamental logic is manifest. People who abide by the laws are, by definition, not the sort to break the laws. That means people who break the law are not interested in any new laws you are passing. Therefore, passing gun laws will only inconvenience those who follow the law and do nothing to stop the criminals. At best, gun laws are just a tool of the state to go after the more clever street gangs.

Despite all this, Progressives obsess over gun laws. This story from a few months ago is a good example. The people who support this sort of stuff know nothing about guns, gun culture or gun shows. Yet, they remain convinced that gun shows resemble an arms bizarre in the Middle East, where bearded men buy and sell military gear. Further, they remain convinced that gun shows are exempt from the thousands of gun laws on the books. They are convinced that “gun show loophole” is a real thing.

And that puts it about as simply as it can be put.

That’s what makes guns a useful topic for understanding the Prog mind. All of us have had the experience where the Prog friend or relative starts going on about guns. Someone then steps forward to correct all of their errors about guns and gun laws. Then someone gently explains to them the anti-logic at the core of gun control. The Prog will take correction, nod along and seem to understand the material, but then soon after they will be repeating the same gun control slogans they were saying the last time.

Indeed, that’s what they do with every issue on which proglodytes and rational adults differ.

Popular Hip-Hop Artist Talib Kweli Spends Weekend Calling Black People ‘Coons’ On Twitter

16th July 2017

Read it.

Talib Kweli, the popular artist best known for being the other half of the hip-hop group Black Star, dedicated countless hours over the weekend fighting against perceived “racism” by calling other black men “coons.” He directed much of his ire toward respected African-American economist Thomas Sowell, against whom he has a long-held grudge.

Any of Thomas Sowell’s fingers has a bigger brain than Talib Kweli.

Kweli once claimed that Sowell’s contributions to the conservative publication National Review made him a “white supremacist.”

It’s not enough to be black, you have to be the Right Kind of Black.

Kweli responded to Virk’s remark by sending him dozens upon dozens of replies with remarks like “Coon coon coon coon coon.”

I guess we know who the coon is.

Halifax Caving To Protesters Who Want Statue Of Cornwallis Removed

16th July 2017

Read it.

The City of Halifax, Nova Scotia covered up a statue of its founder, General Edward Cornwallis, Saturday in response to demands by protesters who want the monument removed. With only 150 protesters on-scene, city crews draped a black cloth over the statue as a “sign of good faith” that it will eventually be removed.

The protesters object to commemorating Cornwallis, a key figure in the British response to the American Revolution, who founded Halifax in 1749. They say he was a progenitor of “genocide” because he waged war against the Mi’kmaq tribe that lived in what is now Nova Scotia.

The madness spreads and, with success, is encouraged to spread further.

Everyday Snowflakes

16th July 2017

Theodore Dalrymple points and laughs.

I first thought about this during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, when it was demanded of us that we should believe incompatible things simultaneously, for example that it was simply a disease like any other and that it was a disease of unprecedented importance and unique significance; that it could strike anybody but that certain group were martyrs to it; that it must be normalized and yet treated differently. For example, tests for it alone of all the thousands of ills that flesh was heir to had, by legal prescription, to be preceded by pre-test counseling. It was a bit like living under a small version of a communist dictatorship, in which the law of noncontradiction had been abrogated in favor of dialectics, under which all contradictions were compatible, but which contradictions had to be accepted was a matter of the official policy of the moment.

Human beings are funny. I remember a patient who insisted that her AIDS be treated as a disease like any other, but who also made sure we never forgot that she had contracted it voluntarily by deliberately injecting herself with the blood of a friend with AIDS. She was not suicidal, at least not in the sense that she wanted to die there and then, or anytime soon. Rather, she had a Byronic notion of the disease, a romantic conception of it as a badge of superior sensibility, which is to say that those who suffered from it were in some way morally superior to those who did not, and thus were imbued with a moral authority that others did not share. And yet at the same time she demanded to be treated matter-of-factly. By demanding this difficult psychological feat of us, recognition and nonrecognition at the same time (a feat to which, by the way, we proved equal by the exercise of self-control), she was in effect exerting her power over us. It was all very pathetic, a consequence of her thirst for significance in a mass society.

Islamic Terror in Europe: The Statistics

15th July 2017

Read it.

The following analysis from Denmark uses statistics published by the European Union to demonstrate which political or religious group is responsible for most deadly terrorist attacks in Europe. The conclusion is no surprise to Gates of Vienna readers, but perhaps the average Danish viewer is not as aware of the magnitude of Islamic terrorism in the West.

One statistic presented in this video made me curious: the fact that 95% of those killed in terror attacks in 2016 were killed by Muslim terrorists. Five percent of 142 is seven, so seven people were killed in non-Muslim terror attacks in 2016. I’m not doubting the authenticity of this figure, but do you remember those attacks? Because I don’t. The Finsbury Park Mosque attack didn’t occur until this year. I can’t remember any other recent deadly non-Muslim attacks. Did the Black Block, Antifa, or UAF actually manage to kill someone in 2016 during their looting and burning? Or is some of the violence in Ukraine perhaps included in these numbers?

The Churches’ Bans on Consanguineous Marriages, Kin-Networks and Democracy

15th July 2017

Read it.

This paper tests the hypothesis that extended kin-groups, as characterized by a high level of cousin marriages, impact the proper functioning of formal institutions. Consistent with this hypothesis I find that countries with high cousin marriage rates exhibit a weak rule of law and are more likely autocratic. Further evidence comes from a quasi-natural experiment. In the early medieval ages the Church started to prohibit kin-marriages. Using the variation in the duration and extent of the Eastern and Western Churches’ bans on consanguineous marriages as instrumental variables, reveals highly significant point estimates of the percentage of cousin marriage on an index of democracy. An additional novel instrument, cousin-terms, strengthens this point: the estimates are very similar and do not rest on the European experience alone. Exploiting within country variation support these results. These findings point to the importance of marriage patterns for the proper functioning of formal institutions and democracy.

I have a passing interest in the Church of England and its American variation, the Episcopal Church. An old friend is in the church so I get some first hand descriptions of what it is like to be in a dying institution. That’s the only way to describe the Episcopal Church. Attendance declines every year as old members die off and new members never materialize. Go into an Episcopal service and you can’t help but notice that most everyone is a senior. The actuarial tables are the church’s greatest enemy.

A Target-Spotter for Antifa in Hamburg?

14th July 2017

Read it.

It’s been a busy summer for award-winning Swedish journalists.

The first one in the news was admittedly “Swedish” rather than Swedish, a mischievous Algerian named Farid Ikken who attacked police officers with a hammer outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on June 6. Mr. Ikken got ventilated by the cops for his trouble, but survived, and will eventually face whatever passes for justice in Modern Multicultural France.

The second prize-winning Swedish journalist is an authentic Swede, a blond and presumably blue-eyed fellow named Mathias Wåg. To put it in a nutshell, last week, during the G20 riots in Hamburg, Mr. Wåg appeared to be acting as a target-spotter for Antifa. Based on the videos of those smoky events, he seemed to be consulting with various activists, pointing out journalists who needed to be beaten up.

Lawfare

13th July 2017

ZMan turns over a rock.

The weaponization of the law, particularly the civil courts has become so common, that we no longer notice it. The most obvious example is when  someone gets acquitted of a crime, but then the alleged victim goes to civil court for damages. Alternatively, some hate thinker gets off in state court, but the the feds come in and charge the guy with civil rights violations. It’s an obvious abuse of the law in order to get around the jury system, but it is now just another feature of a system more concerned with vengeance than justice.

The college rape hoax phenomenon is another variation on this. A mentally unstable coed makes claims that can never be proved, but the school, fearing Title IX litigation, punishes the accused anyway. The SPLC is doing something similar with their litigation against the website, The Daily Stormer. The point of the suit is to shut down the site, because the people at the SPLC don’t like the content. Even if the case is eventually tossed, the point is to intimidate the owner and anyone who holds similar opinions.

Who Is “Ruining America”?

13th July 2017

Read it.

This David Brooks column called “How We Are Ruining America” has received lots of attention on the internet, but I don’t think we have commented on it. According to Brooks, members of the college-educated upper middle class — the top 20 percent or so — are ruining America by making sure their kids have good opportunities and, supposedly, making sure that kids from lower classes don’t get them.

Brooks’ beef is that the college-educated upper middle class is excluding other people’s kids from access to the opportunities their kids have. But Brooks has just told us that the way we confer these opportunities is to embrace behavior codes that put cultivating successful children at the center of life.

This tactic is available to members of all classes. Anyone can embrace behavior codes that put their kids at the center, and generations of immigrants and poor people have done. If, today, too many members of lower classes don’t embrace these codes, then they, not members of the upper middle class, are excluding their offspring from access to opportunities.

The reason why proles are proles is because they act like proles. The primary identifiers of social class are behavioral, especially in these days when it’s fashionable for upper-class people to mimic the dress and speech patterns of lower-class people.

The whole proglodyte Narrative is about denying that Fashionable Victim Groups have agency. They are the way they are because they can’t help it, so it’s Not Their Fault. Only those who are among God’s Chosen, like the Obamas, can rise above their background and become real people rather than just interchangeable units of a racial or sexual or political Identity Group.
