Showdown at the Brenner Pass?

20th July 2017

Read it.

We’ve featured several articles in the news feed about the Italian threat to give visas to hundreds of thousands of “refugees” and send them to its northern borders. The following report from an Austrian perspective indicates that an Italian migrant-aid NGO — the Italian Refugee Council — is behind the threats, rather than the Italian government.

Italy must really suck if people prefer to go to Austria. (Kind of like France and Britain. What do they know that we don’t know?)

Members of African Robotics Team Go Missing, Two Seen Crossing Canadian Border

20th July 2017

Read it.

All six members of the teenage Bundi robotics team were reported missing Tuesday, after they were last seen at during a competition at Constitution Hall, reports Fox 5 DC.

Two of them, 16-year-old Don Ingabire and 17-year-old Audrey Mwamikazi, were seen trying to get in to Canada, D.C. police said. The other four, 18-year-old Richard Irakoze, 17-year-old Kevin Sabumukiza, 17-year-old Nice Munezero and 18-year-old Aristide Irambona, have yet to be sighted.

Gee, I wonder why.

The African teens had traveled to America to participate in a robotics competition hosted by FIRST Global. The competition draws young adults around the world and encourages them to pursue math and science fields.

Indeed, and chase them all the way into the Great White North.

The Mother of All Disruptions

20th July 2017

Read it.

Warning: don’t read too much about the future of jobs in an era of Artificial Intelligence if you are—psychologically speaking—in a dark place. If you’re a lover of the arts and humanities, for example, you should probably go full hermit in the basement of a university library with plenty of provisions (but no WiFi). If you greet all technological advances with gee-whiz enthusiasm, you’d best avoid long conversations with people who make a living driving trucks or reading X-rays. If you’re an antiglobalization protectionist, get ready to look with longing on a time when the biggest threats to jobs were NAFTA and an ascendant China. And even if you believe in the long-term benefits of what economist Joseph Schumpeter called creative destruction—as I do—prepare to have your convictions tested.

Sky is falling; film at 11. Women and minorities hardest hit, etc. etc.

Low-Income Americans Wage Growth Outpacing High-Income Salaries

20th July 2017

Read it.

For the first time in roughly a decade, the weekly take for workers in the bottom 10th percentile of the wage scale grew at a quicker rate in the second quarter of 2017, from the same period in 2016, than any other class of laborers, according to the Labor Department. The last time the lowest end of the pay scale outpaced other groups was in 2010.

Damn that Trump! He keeps screwing things up! What happens to the Narrative if low-income wage earners’ incomes grow faster than the 1%?

Profs Fear White Supremacists Are Infiltrating Medieval Studies

20th July 2017

Oh noes!

Academics are now finding white supremacy under the medieval studies bed. As Campus Reform reports, some professors of the period fear that the forces of the “alt-right” are using using this storied age to advance a dangerous “white supremacist fantasy.”

Vassar College professor Dorothy Kim issued this dire warning to The Chronicle of Higher Education last Sunday: “It should be a really, really important time to reflect on why are these things going on and what we can do to combat that. The worry I would have is that, is the field going to be forever linked to white supremacy?”

The worry that I have is, is this going to be another field that surrenders respect for reality to pursue a Leftist political agenda?

Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush Again …

19th July 2017

Steve Sailer turns over a rock.

Millions of dollars will soon be spent in Richmond to help increase the number of African-Americans homeowners. A newly announced partnership between Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia, Inc. (HOME) and Wells Fargo will provide $4 million to help close the racial home ownership gap.

Some things I discovered back in 2008:

– There are a gigantic number of these type of “fair housing” NGOs across the country. One national association of them had over 600 organizations as members.

– A lot of these NGOs fighting white racism in mortgage lending are run by white people like Ms. Crislip.

– A $4 million payoff is a lot to an NGO, but is a minor cost of doing business to one of the Four Big Banks like Wells Fargo. The mortgage market is so big that the word “trillions” comes up: for example, in January 2005, Countrywide Financial launched the metastasization of the Housing Bubble when Angelo Mozillo, having attained agreement from Fannie Mae to buy his dubious mortgages, announced his plan to lend One … Trillion … Dollars to minority and lower income borrowers by 2010.

– The Obama Administration had lots of schemes to rake off mortgage money to its allies in these kind of NGOs that search out examples of disparate impact and trumpet them until they get paid off.

Green Cronyism Gone Wild: It Looks Like the State of California Is Bailing Out Tesla

19th July 2017

Read it.

Tesla will soon hit the limit of the federal tax rebates, which are good for the first 200,000 EVs sold in the US per manufacturer beginning in December 2009 (IRS explanation). In the second quarter after the manufacturer hits the limit, the subsidy gets cut in half, from $7,500 to $3,750; two quarters later, it gets cut to $1,875. Two quarters later, it goes to zero.

Given Tesla’s ambitious US sales forecast for its Model 3, it will hit the 200,000 vehicle limit in 2018, after which the phase-out begins. A year later, the subsidies are gone. Losing a $7,500 subsidy on a $35,000 car is a huge deal. No other EV manufacturer is anywhere near their 200,000 limit. Their customers are going to benefit from the subsidy; Tesla buyers won’t.

This could crush Tesla sales. Many car buyers are sensitive to these subsidies. For example, after Hong Kong rescinded a tax break for EVs effective in April, Tesla sales in April dropped to zero. The good people of Hong Kong will likely start buying Teslas again, but it shows that subsidies have a devastating impact when they’re pulled.

That’s what Tesla is facing next year in the US.

In California, the largest EV market in the US, 2.7% of new vehicles sold in the first quarter were EVs, up from 0.4% in 2012, according to the California New Dealers Association. California is Tesla’s largest market. Something big needs to be done to help the Bay Area company, which has lost money every single year of its ten years of existence. And taxpayers are going to be shanghaied into doing it.

Are We Seeing the Sparks of a Holy War in Jerusalem?

19th July 2017

Read it.

Oh, say it ain’t so.

The faithful leaving Jerusalem’s al Aqsa mosque yesterday evening were thrilled for the after-party. Marching on and around Temple Mount, they chanted cheerful slogans like “We will sacrifice our lives for al-Aqsa,” “We will die as martyrs,” “There’s going to be another Intifadah,” and “There’s nothing like killing soldiers.” More than a few were throwing rocks and glass bottles at the Israeli police officers stationed nearby. Among the rioters was Ekrima Sa’id Sabri, the former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, a popular preacher in al Aqsa, and a Holocaust denier who energized the crowd with talk of holy war.

To what do we owe this pleasure? To hear the mob tell it, the violence was a legitimate expression of outrage sparked by Israel’s decision to install metal detectors at the entrance to the holy site. And Israel, you may recall, installed metal detectors at the entrance to the holy site after three Palestinian terrorists opened fire there Friday morning, killing two Israeli police officers who happened to be Druze. As David Horovitz put it crudely but poignantly, “Arabs killed Arabs at a holy place, the Jews are trying to ensure that it doesn’t happen again, and the Arab world is furious with the Jews about it.”

Jonathan Kay on the Tyranny of Twitter: How Mob Censure Is Changing the Intellectual Landscape

19th July 2017

Read it.

… for certain rather expansive definitions of ‘intellectual’.

In a 1945 essay, Notes on Nationalism, George Orwell described a rumour among leftists that the real reason American troops had been brought to Europe was to suppress English communism, not fight the Nazis.

“One has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe things like that,” Orwell famously noted. “No ordinary man could be such a fool.” Even by Orwell’s high standards, those words have aged extremely well. Tell an ordinary Canadian schlub that white people aren’t allowed to quote Beyoncé, and he will be smart enough to laugh in your face. Dress down a superbly intelligent Peace and Conflict Studies PhD candidate for the same act, and she will fall over herself with apologies.

Just as Muslim terrorists tend to kill more Muslims than non-Muslims, PC ThoughtCrime mobs tend to attack their own co-delusionists more often than their opposition.

The Zeroth Amendment

19th July 2017

Steve Sailer boils it down.

A little-known survey revealed the single most decisive reason Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton: White Democrats have drifted into ideological extremism over not regulating immigration.

By way of background, a general problem in political science with using polls to track ideological trends over the years is that you want to keep asking the same questions to see how voters’ responses evolve. But that means that pollsters seldom ask about new beliefs that would have seemed bizarre even in the recent past.

In turn, pundits, lacking polling data to write about, don’t even mention historic developments, such as the rise of mainstream antiwhite American hate discourse over the past half decade. For most mainstream journalists to notice their own increasingly vicious racist attitudes would be like a fish noticing it is wet.

The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates

18th July 2017

Read it.

Gerona and Cantrell, a pharmacist and toxicologist, knew that the term “expiration date” was a misnomer. The dates on drug labels are simply the point up to which the Food and Drug Administration and pharmaceutical companies guarantee their effectiveness, typically at two or three years. But the dates don’t necessarily mean they’re ineffective immediately after they “expire” — just that there’s no incentive for drugmakers to study whether they could still be usable.

ProPublica has been researching why the U.S. health care system is the most expensive in the world. One answer, broadly, is waste — some of it buried in practices that the medical establishment and the rest of us take for granted.  We’ve documented how hospitals often discard pricey new supplies, how nursing homes trash valuable medications after patients pass away or move out, and how drug companies create expensive combinations of cheap drugs. Experts estimate such squandering eats up about $765 billion a year — as much as a quarter of all the country’s health care spending.

California Doubles Down on Subsidizing Wealthy Buyers of Electric Cars

18th July 2017

Read it.

California Assemblyman Phil Ting believes “electric cars are our future,” and he’s willing to spend a lot of taxpayer money to make that future happen.

In what he describes as an “aggressive boost” to the “electric car revolution,” Ting (D–San Francisco) has proposed the creation of a $3 billion fund to subsidize the purchase of electric vehicles, mostly through tax rebates. The legislation has already passed California’s lower house.

California has already spent a bundle on such schemes, which have produced little in the way of electric car adoption while funneling hundreds of millions of dollars to the state’s wealthiest residents.

“Clean eating? That’s some rich white people shit.”

Can’t say he’s wrong….

I recently attended a lunch held by one of the country’s foremost organic companies. The event’s host—a yoga teacher who lives in a Connecticut suburb where the streets are jammed with hybrid luxury SUVs and single-source organic almond milk lattes in every cupholder—explained how the brand’s holistic world view aligned with her own.

Puttin’ on the Crust.

I don’t buy organic, think the anti-GMO movement is basically BS, and eat a bowl of Lucky Charms with conventional whole milk every night of the week. And for 30 years I’ve somehow not only survived, but thrived. My docs say my health is stellar—on my diet of what is, apparently, filthy, fake food. Am I a miracle of biology? Not even close.

Probably voted for Trump. The swine.

Deweese says she hates the term clean eating. “It’s a social status thing. It’s more about ‘I’m better because I eat clean,'” she says. Adds Scott-Dixon, “‘Clean eating’ is a preoccupation of people who, in socioeconomic terms, really don’t have any real, legitimate worries. It’s a first-world problem.”

Researches analyzed 5,630 use-of-force reports from the Dallas Police Department from 2014-2015. They focused on reports that did not include fatal use of force because those incidents happened too rarely, researchers explained in the American Journal of Public Health.

Researcher Stephen Bishopp, a professor at the University of North Texas, says there’s more to the numbers than just this cursory view. When he and fellow researchers controlled for outside factors, such as suspect cooperation and the officer’s size, the relationship between race and use of force disappeared.
