Saudi Officials Were ‘Supporting’ 9/11 Hijackers, Commission Member Says

13th May 2016

Read it.

A former Republican member of the 9/11 commission, breaking dramatically with the commission’s leaders, said Wednesday he believes there was clear evidence that Saudi government employees were part of a support network for the 9/11 hijackers and that the Obama administration should move quickly to declassify a long-secret congressional report on Saudi ties to the 2001 terrorist attack.

The comments by John F Lehman, an investment banker in New York who was Navy secretary in the Reagan administration, signal the first serious public split among the 10 commissioners since they issued a 2004 final report that was largely read as an exoneration of Saudi Arabia, which was home to 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Iran’s Unstoppable March Toward Dominance

12th May 2016

Read it.

Today, the rise of Iran is less of a political topic to debate and more of a reality to recognize. Compared to its Middle Eastern neighbors, Iran has made impressive strides in space technology in the past few years, putting the first satellite into orbit in February 2009; has emerged as a cyber power on the level of China or Russia; and has achieved significant advances in military hardware production, including sophisticated unmanned aerial vehicles, main battle tanks, and medium and long-range ballistic missiles. The Iranian defense industry is making gradual inroads into global armament markets, with Iraq, Syria and Lebanon already receiving regular arms shipments to fight Islamic State and other rebel forces. The Iranian state is capable of projecting force in the Gulf and the Levant, and has often challenged the United States—successfully or not—to stay out of the Gulf region, showing a high degree of foreign-policy independence.

‘A Collective Blind Spot’

12th May 2016

The Other McCain pulls no punches.

Most parents fail to understand that the educational bureaucracy profoundly hostile to parental sovereignty. Your children are actually their children, the “progressive” educator has been trained to believe. The public school system in America is a union-controlled apparatus of the Democrat Party, operated by cultural Marxists who despise Christianity and capitalism. If you are a Christian who is trying to raise your children with decent moral values, keep them far away from the government education bureaucracy. Public school teachers hate you, and they consider it their professional duty to teach your children to hate you, too.

Two words: Home. School.

Beyond that, remember: Feminists hate your sons. Feminists want your sons to fail in school. Feminists don’t want your sons to go to college. Feminists don’t want your sons to have professional careers. Feminism is about achieving “equality” by destroying opportunity for your sons.

The invasion was carried out in collusion with Nazi Germany, and the subsequent Soviet occupation of eastern Poland was in accordance with a secret protocol of the Nazi-Soviet Pact, which had been signed by Molotov and Ribbentrop on 23rd August 1939. As a consequence of the Nazi invasion of Poland, Great Britain declared war on the German nation on 3d September 1939, but no such declaration followed the Soviet invasion of Poland 14 days later.

Federal Court Rules That Obamacare Subsidies Were Illegally Funded

12th May 2016

Read it.

A federal judge ruled today that the Obama administration has been implementing Obamacare illegally, paying out billions in subsidies to insurers that aren’t authorized under the law.

The lawsuit, led by House Republicans, argued that the administration had no authority to fund law’s cost-sharing reductions, which provide an additional subsidy to people who earn up to 250 percent of the poverty line, which ended up being a little more than half of people enrolled in coverage through the health law’s exchanges. (The cost-sharing subsidies are distinct from the law’s main insurance subsidies, which cover a portion of the cost of insurance coverage for people up to 400 percent of the poverty line.)

The subsidies were authorized by the law, but Congress rejected an appropriations request from the administration to fund them. The administration moved some money around and funded them anyway. Estimates indicate that the program would funnel about $130 billion to insurers over the course of a decade.

Of course, the Crust will find a way around this temporary bump in the road. But it will be entertaining to see what form the necessary wiggle-dance will take.

It’s pretty sad when a political system degenerates into sophistry as a spectator sport — but that’s all we’ve got, so we’d better enjoy it.

All In All It’s Just Another Brick In The Wall

12th May 2016

Sarah Hoyt talks about being an Odd.

Which brings us to Odds and the way Odds cope with being Odd, and the way only Odds really understand other Odds and, by definition, most people aren’t Odds.

My former form (eh) was exhilarating to be in because until this blog I’ve never before or since found myself in a group of “my people.”

You know who you are, even if you don’t know why.  You’re the people who given a choice between vanilla and chocolate say “strawberry” and if you can at all set about making it happen.  You’re the people who don’t fit in, and all of you at some point read the story of the pink monkey, torn apart by the brown monkeys.  You’re the people who either learned to go away from normal human intercourse, or else learned to fit in — often not perfectly, but well enough. — In a world of sheep and dogs and wolves, you’re the goats.

Been there, done that.

Three Atlanta girls walking to school were forced into a truancy van last week, even though they were just 50 yards from the school.

Just when they had almost reached the school, truant officers confronted the girls and told them they had to get into the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) van.

For Some on the Left, All’s Fair When Battling the Right

11th May 2016

Read it.

‘Some’? Try ‘most’.

“Eliminationist” might be a good word for this censorious attitude. Most liberals and progressives aren’t eliminationists, they favor debate and still believe in the competition of ideas. But in all corners of the Modern Left, you can find the imperious types who are simply done arguing, or, as the President says, “We know what works. We know what we have to do. We’ve just got to put aside the stale and outmoded debates.”

Colleges across the country have begun to roll out speech codes, and to disinvite speakers whose views are foreign to the liberal majority of the student body and the faculty. (President Obama, to his credit, warned colleges against this latter pernicious trend.) The colleges’ argument: Unpleasant views are inherently discriminatory or bigoted, and they might trigger sensitive students.

Forest Pests Cause $2 Billion In Damage In The US Every Year

11th May 2016

Mary Beth Griggs points out that the sky is falling.

Last week, researchers announced that the disease known as sudden oak death was now unstoppable. In the 21 years since it was first spotted, the disease has killed millions of trees, devastating forest ecosystems, and permanently changing the landscape.

The study had a bittersweet note. Turns out, the disease could have been stopped in its tracks back in 2002, if only there had been a large investment in prevention programs.

Well, then, let’s just get the government right on that. So many things would be fixed if only everyone realized that all it takes is a large investment in prevention programs.

Democracy Is Dead in Britain

11th May 2016

The naming of the Royal Research Ship (RRS) attracted huge interest after the Natural Environment Research Council encouraged Britons to come up with suggestions, leading to a stream of light-hearted ideas such as RRS Usain Boat, RRS I Like Big Boats&I Cannot Lie and RRS Watch Out For The Iceberg.

Backed by a social media campaign, Boaty McBoatface easily topped an online poll with more than 124,000 votes, although even the instigator of the Boaty name later apologized for his suggestion.

However, the government decided that the state-of-the-art ship, which is due to set sail in 2019, would be named after Attenborough, 89, famed for his BBC TV natural history programs spanning six decades and whose name had attracted 11,000 votes.

Yeah, we’ll allow democracy except where it crosses the opinions of the Great and the Good.

Jamba Juice Headquarters Moves to Texas

Jamba Juice Inc. this week said it plans to move its headquarters from Emeryville, Calif., to Frisco, Tex., becoming the latest California-based restaurant chain to move out of the state.

The juice chain said it plans to move its headquarters for operations, business development, sales and marketing, finance, supply chain, technology, human resources and other corporate functions to Texas. It will then close the Emeryville office after a six-month transition.

David Pace, the chain’s chief executive officer, said the company is making the move to better position itself to support franchisees. But the company also cited operating costs as a reason for the move.

Did You Hear the One About Obamacare?

11th May 2016

Read it. And watch the video.

David Rutz draws attention to alleged journalist Charlie Rose and three of Barack Obama’s former speechwriters having a good laugh Monday night wjoking about the president’s infamous, oft-repeated false promise that under Obamacare, “if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan” (video). It must have been a helluva whopper for the leftist PolitiFact to name it the 2013 “Lie of the Year.”

As Rutz notes, Obama speechwriters Jon Lovett, Jon Favreau and David Litt appeared on Rose’s PBS program “to gush over Obama’s writing abilities and the art of speechwriting in general.” Rose asked if they had significant “impact” on Obama’s more “serious speeches.”

“The joke speech is the most fun part of this, but the things I’m the most proud of were the most serious speeches, I think,” Lovett said. “Health care. Economic speeches.”

“Lovett wrote the line about, ‘If you like your insurance, you can keep it,’” Favreau said.

“How dare you,” Lovett said, as Rose and the three wordsmiths roared with laughter.

Chinese State Entities Argue They Have ‘Sovereign Immunity’ in U.S. Courts

11th May 2016

Some Chinese state-owned entities, backed by the key government agency that oversees major state industrial companies, have adopted a controversial defense when they face U.S. lawsuits: You can’t touch us because we enjoy sovereign immunity.

That’s a one-trick pony; once an entity claims ‘sovereign immunity’, even if the claim is successful, it can be barred from further doing business in that jurisdiction, as happens when diplomats are sent home for breaking host-country law.

North Carolina Police Say They Can’t Enforce Transgender Bathroom Law

11th May 2016

Read it.

This is, of course, nonsense, although it’s very understandable that NPR finds it attractive nonsense.

A man using a bathroom posted ‘Women’ or a woman using a bathroom posted ‘Men’ would be liable for arrest for trespass, just as if a customer went through a door marked ‘Employees Only’. The same doesn’t — and wouldn’t — require any police to be standing on guard, but rather would be triggered by a complaint, as most cases of trespass are. The situation doesn’t require a birth certificate, but merely an answer to the question ‘Do you have a penis?’, which can be determined by visual inspection.

Journalism schools must rival college education departments for the dimness of their students and the ability to charge people for imparting no discernible amount of education.

There’s been a lot of talk about Trump as the so-called “alt-right” candidate, but he’s actually been running an “alt-center” campaign, staking out positions that are controversial because they dissent in a commonsensical fashion from the increasingly bizarre mainstream globalist ideology.

The Foul Legacy of Sykes-Picot

11th May 2016

Read it.

Sykes-Picot (official name: the Asia Minor Agreement) bears recalling because its profound two mistakes are in danger of being repeated: one concerned form and the other substance.

Negotiated in secret by three European imperial powers, it became the great symbol of European perfidy. Not surprisingly, the Allied Powers secretly carving up the central Middle East without consulting its inhabitants prompted an outraged response (George Antonius, writing in 1938: “a shocking document … the product of greed at its worst … a startling piece of double-dealing”). Sykes-Picot set the stage for the proliferation of a deeply consequential conspiracy-mentality that ever since has afflicted the region.

Murphy’s Law: No Good Deed Goes Unexploited

11th May 2016

Read it.

Among the many minority groups to suffer heavy losses in the Syrian civil war are the Palestinians. Nearly one percent of the Syrian Palestinians have been killed so far, most of them civilians. Overall nearly two percent of all Syrians have died in the war so far. What is odd about this is that the Syrian Palestinians are not citizens of Syria but long-term refugees. Many of these Palestinian families have been in Syria since the 1950s. This is the result of an odd aspect of UN rules concerning refugees that only applies to Palestinians. This began in 1949 when Arab nations refused to accept and absorb Moslems who fled (mostly) from what is now Israel on the promise of the Arab nations would soon mobilize sufficient military strength to destroy Israel, drive the Jews out and allow the refugees to return home. That never happened and it was quickly recognized that there was a serious refugee problem. The UN established a program to take care of these refugees but in a very unusual move the 750,000 original Palestinian refugees were allowed to pass on their refugee status to their children. No other refugee group was allowed to do that by the UN. About the same number of Jews were driven out of Moslem countries after 1948 and they were all accepted and absorbed by other nations, mainly Israel and the U.S. Since 1947 the number of “Palestinian refugees” has grown to five million and Arab states continue to refuse to absorb them. A nasty side effect of this UN policy was to make Palestinian refugees unwelcome and untrusted in the countries they did settle in. Many Moslem nations have had serious problems in the past with Moslem refugees that were given sanctuary, but not citizenship.

The Media’s Rhodes Scholars

11th May 2016

Steven Hayward at Powerline mentions some inconvenient truth.

The Ben Rhodes story takes me back to the infamous Atlantic article of September 1981, “The Education of David Stockman.” That was the story where lefty writer William Greider sweet-talked a gullible and naive David Stockman into confessing that supply-side economics was supposedly a trickle-down fraud (though in fact Stockman never understood it and wasn’t a sympathizer to begin with).

The media greeted that story as a major scandal about the Reagan Administration. By contrast, the revelation that the White House manipulated the media because, as Ben Rhodes rightly said, “they literally know nothing,” has not caused the media to be outraged that the White House was deceitful in the same way it argued in 1981.

Lots of reasons for this, of course, starting with the sympathy most journalists have for Obama and his Iran diplomacy. As several people have pointed out, the real ruckus here is not the revelation that the White House lied, but that the media have been exposed for the lightweights they are.  That’s much more unforgivable than being lied to. Did Rhodes have to rub their noses in it? Let’s start calling them (Ben) Rhodes Scholars for their acuity.

“If this were poker, which hand looks stronger to you for a national election?”

Scott Adams starts getting the credit he deserves.

Well, duh. They know perfectly well that she can’t be trusted not to throw them under the bus, as she did in Benghazi.

Getting the Lead Out of Flint Disinformation

10th May 2016

Steven Hayward at Powerline actually runs the numbers.

I’ve been wanting to circle back around to the story about the leaded water in Flint, Michigan, for some time now, on the suspicion that a close look at the data would show that the blood lead levels turning up in children are likely much lower than was typical of the majority of American children just 40 years ago, when airborne lead levels from leaded gasoline were very high.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, in the mid-1970s 88 percent of children nationwide had blood lead levels above 10 micrograms per deciliter (ug/dl). In the old days the dangerous level was thought to be around 30 ug/dl, but of course we’ve moved that down to about 5, and you hear a lot of people breathlessly say that there is no safe level.

Busted Claim: Data Shows That Climate Induced Sea Level Rise Didn’t Wipe Out Five Solomon Islands

Too bad. I suspect the world would be better off without so many piss-ant island nations in the Pacific whining to First World countries about how poor and underprivileged they are.

Obamacare Chief Caught Lying Under Oath About State Exchange Cash

10th May 2016

Read it.

Obamacare chief Andy Slavitt lied before a Congressional hearing investigating wasted Obamacare state exchange funds, according to a new report by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. While under oath, Slavitt claimed that “over $200 million” in funds had been returned to the federal government. In actuality, just $21.5 million has been recovered despite state exchanges receiving $4.5 billion in taxpayer funds. In addition, the $21.5 million figure represented leftover funds, not money that had been recovered as a result of federal oversight.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

SJWs Create ‘Shady Person of Color’ List to Target Dissenters

10th May 2016

Read it.

During the height of the racial protests at Claremont McKenna College last November, CMCers of Color issued a list of demands including the resignation of Dean Spellman and the establishment of a permanent “safe space” that would function as a Resource Center for students from marginalized backgrounds.

The student group wrote an official proposal to the administration, but also created a private Google doc with other miscellaneous items they wanted for their safe space, such as kitchen items and a sound system.

Among this list is a Shady Person of Color (SPOC) board, which includes a royal court of five members of the CMC community who opposed the group. Brandon Gonzalez, the King SPOC, is the Assistant Dean of Admissions. Gonzalez led the diversity initiative that CMCers of Color felt misrepresented CMC. The Queen SPOC, Hannah Oh (CMC ’15), was the Editor-in-Chief of the Claremont Independent at the time, and coauthored an editorial critiquing the protestors’ tactics. In a similar vein, Nathan Tsai (CMC ’17), the “Ignorant SPOC,” wrote a letter that garnered 277 signatures in opposition to the protestors’ demands.

I Am Going to Vote for Trump Though It Makes Me Want to Projectile Vomit

10th May 2016

Kurt Schlichter states the obvious.

But I have principles too, and a key one is not electing a man-hating progressive fascist who has the liberal infrastructure behind her that can make her goose-stepping dreams actually come true. Trump is a one-off loner who Congress could contain. Hillary Clinton has eager allies and potentially the Senate and, God forbid, the House behind her. She’s just malignant and stupid enough to start people shooting, while all Trump could do is get us yelling. Slight advantage, Trump.

Just so. Trump is one man, and one man, even with our current Imperial Presidency, can’t do as much damage as Hillary, who is merely the figurehead for an evil movement that needs to be stopped.

Jihadi Terror Creates New Global Market For Close Air Support Aircraft

9th May 2016

Read it.

Back in 2009, when the Department of Defense had but one problem on its mind, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Air Force had the idea of developing a light air support (LAS) aircraft for the close air support (CAS) mission for counterinsurgency operations. The focus was on a non-developmental platform, one that was cheap and easy to operate and maintain, intended primarily for foreign militaries with limited budgets, infrastructure and trained personnel. Initially, the Air Force thought it might acquire some number of this aircraft for its own use, but the decision was made to focus entirely on exporting them to allies and partners. At present a total of 15 aircraft are being provided to the Afghan National Air Force.

49 Shootings, 7 Fatal, During Violent Mother’s Day Weekend

9th May 2016

Read it.

Thank God for those strict gun control laws in Chicago … otherwise the place would wind up like Texas.

Community members spoke out against the violence on a weekend when mothers are supposed to be spending time with their children, not saying goodbye.

And we see how well that worked. Maybe we need more ‘community organizers’ like Barry Obama.
