The next frontier of economic efficiency

4th December 2008

Steve Sailer is always worth reading.

The retailers, in fact, have shoved a lot of their old inventory holding costs onto consumers by, for example, selling them cases rather than individual items. Part of the demand for bigger houses and bigger vehicles that has proven so expensive to us as a society comes from consumers taking on more of the burden of storing and transporting goods.

Cruel and Unusual Norway

3rd December 2008

Read it.

MP, Solveig Horne, who is a member of the Justice Committee, says on the party’s home page that special diets behind bars should be refused.

“There are already limited resources in the prison unit. We shouldn’t use time, money and energy on making room for special diets for some prisoners, based on religious convictions, culture, or taste buds, for that matter,” she says.

Horne thinks that certain Muslims, who want to live in accordance with the Koran, are more concerned with food in prison than with not committing the criminal acts that send them there.

More than a third of all prisoners in Norwegian prisons are Muslims. There are no prisons in Norway that offer halal-meat to prisoners.

Stuff White People Like #117 Political Prisoners

3rd December 2008

Read it.

White people love political prisoners because they are individuals who have been locked up because their beliefs or their presence stands in defiance of an unjust system. In fact, most white people would love to be locked up for their beliefs provided that they could go to a jail with private toilets, plenty of books and no rape.

Obama Voters Explain Their Brilliant Decision

3rd December 2008

The Hog isn’t doing politics any more. Heavens, no. Wouldn’t even think about it.

Liberalism appeals to coddled ivory-tower eggheads with high IQs and the common sense of lemmings, but it also appeals very strongly to people who are either unintelligent or ill-informed. Like many conservatives, I have had the experience of explaining undisputed, verifiable facts to self-proclaimed liberals, and then having them tell me they agree with conservative positions. Awareness tends to lead to conservative opinions. But we live in a nation which no longer educates its people, and a huge percentage of Americans know almost nothing and make decisions purely on the basis of emotion or a desire for approval from others.

Yup, just religion and cooking and guns and maybe tools. That’s all. No politics.

Do You Smell Something?

3rd December 2008

Dana Milbank is a leftoid twit, so when he criticizes a government program it must really be bad.

What was conceived in the 1990s as a sensible $71 million celebration of democracy turned into a half-billion-dollar shrine to legislative excess: an extra $4.2 million for congressional seals, an orientation film and backpack storage space, $30 million more for extra tunnels, elevators and the like, and $85 million for a TV studio for senators (makeup facility included) and a two-story hearing room for House members. By the end, even the lawmaker whose committee monitored the visitor center said she’d “never seen a bigger boondoggle in my life.”

But, you will note, it still happened. A government project is the closest thing to eternal life we will see in this world.

The Field Marshall now weighs more than the previous record holder, his former stablemate The Colonel, who stood 6ft 5ins tall and weighed 3,500lbs before his death in 2005.
