“No news publication has dared to barely scratch the surface like this before,” columnist and campaign reporter Michael King wrote in The Washington Post Tuesday. “This profile sets a benchmark for mindless filler by which all other features about Sen. Obama will now be judged. Just impressive puff-journalism all around.”

Mencius Moldbug‘s call to action.
Our problem is democracy. Democracy is a dangerous, malignant form of government which tends to degenerate, sometimes slowly and sometimes with shocking, gut-wrenching speed, into tyranny and chaos. You’ve been taught to worship democracy. This is because you are ruled by democracy. If you were ruled by the Slime Beast of Vega, you would worship the Slime Beast of Vega. (A more earthly comparison is Communism or “people’s democracy,” whose claim to be a more advanced form of its Western cousin was perfectly accurate – if we mean “advanced” in the sense of, say, “advanced leukemia.”)
I’m loving it. (No, wait — that’s McDonalds….)

I’m offended by the common habit of referring to al-Azhar as a “university”, just because a lot of people go there to study. A real university has an entirely different purpose, which no Muslim institution would touch with a ten-foot pole.

The journalist winds up with the usual George W. Bush-style postmodernist explanation — the soft bigotry of low expectations. If only everybody would just assume the two groups are equal, then they would be.
Try and falsify that proposition!
To study hard is to act Asian, to betray La Raza. If Mexican students tried to beat the Chinese at their own game, and failed, well, that would just prove the Chinese are smarter. So it’s better for Mexican racial self-esteem to make sure nobody even tries, to proclaim that studying is just something Asians high school students do because they’re, uh, no good at tagging and getting pregnant.

A coalition of Hispanic and labor groups in Phoenix accused Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of racial profiling yesterday, alleging in a federal lawsuit that one of the nation’s largest sheriff’s departments is violating the civil rights of nonwhite U.S. citizens in seeking to arrest illegal immigrants.
So now it’s a civil right not to be arrested for illegally crossing the border, unless you’re white?
How very curious.
Since signing up for a U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement program in April 2007 that trains local law enforcement agents to enforce immigration laws, Maricopa deputies have found that 14,830 individuals arrested on state charges turned out to be in the country illegally. In the course of other duties, deputies discovered and arrested another 1,145 illegal immigrants, Chagolla said.
Yup, that sure sounds like a civil rights violation to me.

Sometimes the old ways are best.
The state of the art swaddling is a blanket made of pure merino wool, which absorbs and releases moisture away from the baby in warm conditions and insulates it when the temperature drops.
Of course, a trash bag works just as well, is easier to clean, and costs quite a bit less.

There you have it. Humans are just supporting characters in an argument that ends with a plea for the health of our Common Rock. To sum it all up: sorry about that whole Christ-died-for-your-sins thing; we’ll try to keep it down. Can you join us to work for a ban on plastic grocery store bags?
This works with reasonable people, for only for so long. The reasonable people on both sides end up in the tumbrel. Not the first wave, or the second, but they get around to them eventually. The Land of Inversion has its own definition of reasonable. It’s full of people who regard your denunciation of your history and culture and tradition and beliefs with amusement, and say: that’s a good start. Now let’s go through this again.

Imagine a society so illiberal that columnists felt no qualms about demanding government legislation to force us to change our behaviour; where the public was continually implored to feel guilty about everything from driving to shopping – and where those who refused to feel guilty were said to be suffering from a “psychological” disorder or some other species of mental illness“.
Surely no one would put up with such a society? Yet today, all of the above things are happening – under what we might call the tyranny of environmentalism – and people are putting up with it.

I was startled to realize that stock photo and video purveyors actually create material in anticipation of demand. (I’d somehow failed to consider that stock pictures could be made, not just found.) These suppliers of the world’s commercial imagery are making bets on what life will look and feel like in the near future. Which made me wonder: What else, besides an ongoing technological dystopia, do they imagine waiting ahead?
