Or, at least, one of the handwringers at Slate magazine thinks so.
The underlying reasons for Bell dominance are Washington politics and the economics of natural monopoly. Some markets, because of the sheer costs of being a player, tend toward either a single firm or a small number of firms. Infrastructure and utility markets are the classic examples: bridges, plumbing, and electric systems. Everyone hoped and thought the wireless market would be different. But it’s not, in part because of well-meaning policies. “Fair” spectrum auctions cost billions and thereby create the conditions of natural monopoly, over time making the industry a one- or two-horse show.
You’d think that those who were aghast at monopolies would point that attitude at the government, the fons et origo of monopoly. But they never do.

An entire article proceeding from a false premise — typical for Slate. The point is that the economy isn’t that bad, and ordinary people (unlike, say, thumbsucking pseudo-journalists) realize that and behave accordingly.
And they get paid for this stuff. I should have such a job.

We may have seen the Year of the Pig fully celebrated in accordance with the Chinese calendar for the last time. References to pigs were banned in China’s television advertising in 2007, the official Year of the Pig, to prevent offending the Muslim population. In Taiwan citizens were put on notice about using ‘pig’ postage stamps for mailings to Muslim countries or recipients.

Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, set out to provide the official foundation for what has become not only a thriving business but, more important, an article of faith among millions of Americans. And in releasing a committee report Thursday, he claimed to have accomplished his mission, though he did not use the L-word.
But if you actually read the report, you find something entirely different.
But dive into Rockefeller’s report, in search of where exactly President Bush lied about what his intelligence agencies were telling him about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, and you may be surprised by what you find.
In other words, as with many Democrat-run “official” reports, they can’t lie about the evidence, but they can lie about what the evidence shows, in the sure and certain knowledge that nobody who counts will Read The Whole Thing and catch them out.
Who was it said that it’s impossible to underestimate the intelligence of the American people?

This is the sort of thumbsucking “journalism” that pervades the Washington Post.
A pair of psychologists recently evaluated hundreds of employees at a large North American university that was in the grip of painful change. The researchers wanted to find out whether there were factors that explained why some employees successfully weathered the transition and reengaged with their jobs, while others spiraled into cynicism and exhaustion — the classic signs of burnout.
No doubt the latter read and believed all the doom-and-gloom that outlets such as the Washington Post keep pounding them with. And, of course, “a large North American university” is a really representative sample of the population.
