Bleach is for Troglodytes

17th June 2008

Lileks looks at modern White People culture.

For example: using bleach to clean school tables is apparently incompatible with being progressive.  Progressive people don’t use bleach. I had no idea.  First you will be gently instructed by a friend, I suppose; don’t you know about bleach? Then the friend will ask if you just don’t use any bleach around the house the day before her daughter comes over for a playdate? She gets headaches. Then the friends stop coming altogether, and it’s tight smiles and cool looks when you run into your friends in the produce aisle. Really, if you can’t figure out that you should have removed all bleach from your house, there’s just no hope for you.

Of course, you ought not to be hanging out with socialists, anyway, but I can see how that’s hard to avoid in Minnesota, where they take after The Old Country in politics.

Federal Lands in the US

16th June 2008

Turns out that the feds own quite a bit of it.

The United States government has direct ownership of almost 650 million acres of land (2.63 million square kilometers) – nearly 30% of its total territory.

Looking to Avoid Aggressive Drivers? Check Those Bumpers.

16th June 2008

Read it.

People who feel the psycological compulsion to put their political opinions on their bumpers are just the sort of people who think they ought to run other people’s lives for them. That they are road-ragers is no suprise.

Of course, in Texas we have a traditional response to that. “Judge, he needed killin’.”

Retired Navy Capt. Ward Boston, who in 2002 broke 35 years of silence to say the US Navy Board of Inquiry long cited to clear Israel of wrongdoing in attacking a US Navy ship during the Six Day War was a sham, died June 11 in California. He was 84.

Survey Highlights Unreported Bias of Left Wing Commencement Speakers

16th June 2008

Read it.

Don’t know why this comes as such a surprise; naturally the Overclass is going to listen to its own preachers.

Former Vice-President Al Gore took his message to Carnegie Mellon University where he urged graduates to help the U.S. reassume its rightful position as a world leader by confronting the challenges associated with global warming.

Reminds me of the crack Jewish Suicide Squad from Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

Honda Begins Production of Zero-Emission Hydrogen Cars

16th June 2008

Read it.

Not that you could afford to buy one. Or run it.

What do you do when the first tank of hydrogen runs out?

One of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of wider adoption of fuel cell vehicles is cost and the lack of hydrogen fueling stations.

No shit. Remember the Hindenburg? You could have that under your trunk. Have a nice day.

The kindness of strangers

Evolutionary fault makes dragon lizards run on two legs

13th June 2008

An extensive experiment, which saw 16 species of dragon lizard sprint on a treadmill, concluded that the creatures run on their back legs because the rate of acceleration alters their centre of gravity, making it impossible to keep all four feet on the ground – the reptilian equivalent of a cyclist’s wheelie.

To identify and arrest them later.

What a great idea.

Of course, it doesn’t sit well with those who write for Slate magazine, who appear to think that rioting in the streets is a Constitutional right — hell, a Human Right! — but we reactionaries, who think that children (and they’re mostly children, in thought if not in fact) ought to refrain from inconveniencing others who just want to Get On With It, will applaud.
