Photons Pair Up Like Superconducting Electrons

23rd October 2017

Read it.

Superconductivity — a phenomenon in which electrons can travel through certain materials with zero resistance — has revolutionized parts of medicine, travel and science. Now, an intriguing experiment has seen the same behaviour that underlies superconductivity — but in particles of light. The finding has left physicists wondering how far the comparison might reach.

Leaving Blue Counties for Purple and Red

17th October 2017

The real estate website Redfin has a report based on an analysis of its search data indicating that people who live in Democrat-dominated counties are looking to escape to Republican-dominated counties, where housing is more affordable.

Plus the neighborhood isn’t overrun with stuck-up peacock proglodytes. A win-win all the way around.

Trump Approved A Major Oil Pipeline While The Media Wasn’t Looking

Next up: Analysis by obscure ‘journalists’ at a British newspaper of which of Trump’s advisers actually did the approval, since we all know that Trump is an ignorant fool who spends his days playing golf and tweeting and thus has no time for actual, you know, work.

Cities and Suburbs Are Becoming Pretty Similar

12th October 2017

Tyler Cowen looks at the trend.

A few decades ago the choice for most people was pretty simple: either the city or the suburbs. The city was exciting but a little dangerous. The suburbs were comfortable but bland. These days our suburbs and cities are converging, which is narrowing our lifestyle choices.

‘Narrowing’? I’d say rather ‘broadening’, since it is becoming more and more easy to have the lifestyle of one’s choice no matter where one lives.

New York Restaurant Finds Itself at Centre of Bizarre ‘Putin Burger’ Scandal

9th October 2017

Read it.

Just across the street from Madison Square Garden, Lucy’s Cantina Royale has found itself at the centre of an odd controversy after Russian state-owned media published claims last week that the restaurant had sold a burger special named after Vladimir Putin on his birthday.

“Lucy’s Cantina Royale was subject of a hoax involving Vladimir Putin’s birthday. Our restaurant has never celebrated Vladimir Putin’s birthday in any way, shape, or form, and has never offered a ‘Putin Burger’,” a statement provided by manager Tim Ryan to The Independent reads.

I wasn’t aware that Putin was into Third World food.

Russian state-owned media claimed in a video last week that a waitress had told them that the restaurant had put together a five-patty burger that weighed about “1,952 grammes” — a reference to the year Mr Putin was born — to mark his 65th birthday on Saturday. The video segment, which was clearly filmed at least in part in the restaurant, shows a waitress delivering a mammoth burger to a customer and talking about how it’s made.

I’d be proud to have such a creation named after me.

Mr Ryan said that a burger is available in the restaurant, which offers a variety of Mexican fare,  but that it is named after their chef — not the Russian president.

What a disappointment.

Bump Fire, Trigger Toys, and Gun Laws

9th October 2017

Read it.

A primer for those who don’t do this stuff for a living.

This is going to be a technical post, so bear with me. In order to understand what a “bump fire” device is and how it works, and how laws restricting them would be pointless, it is necessary to understand exactly how firearms work, how fully automatic firearms work, and how semi-automatic firearms work. Key technical vocabulary is highlighted.

It has pictures, so even Democrats ought to be able to follow along.

Nuclear Power Plants That Can Fit In A Backyard Are A Real Possibility

9th October 2017

Read it.

Companies interested in building small-scale nuclear reactors are getting attention at the Department of Energy (DOE) after Secretary of Energy Rick Perry endorsed the idea in a speech in late September, the Washington Examiner reports.

Perry spoke of the concept in a speech to the National Clean Energy Week conference. He said the crisis in Puerto Rico showed the potential benefits of creating a transportable, long lasting source of energy.

Cue eco-Nazi hysteria.

Licensing and regulations are currently major roadblocks for development. Most attempts at building mini reactors haven’t proceeded past the blueprint phase, according to the WNA.

As usual, government is standing in the way of progress.

Changing Lanes: Watch Median Movers & Cone Collectors Rapidly Modify Roads

From everyday lane switches to periodic construction detours, being able to modify lanes quickly, easily and safely with machines helps both drivers and road workers alike. Faster operations reduce time in transit and frustration for people in cars. And as that traffic is flying past, lane-modifying vehicles also help reduce risks for construction workers (who might otherwise by put in harm’s way).

Long Lost Remains of Santa Claus Thought to Be Discovered in Turkey

It was traditionally believed the remains of St Nicholas – said to have miraculous powers – were exhumed and taken to Bari, southern Italy, by Christian merchants in 1087, where they are held in the Basilica di San Nicola.

But the Turkish researchers, having analysed new documents, believe the merchants removed the wrong remains from the church.

“I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise.”

4th October 2017

Read it.

Before I started researching gun deaths, gun-control policy used to frustrate me. I wished the National Rifle Association would stop blocking common-sense gun-control reforms such as banning assault weapons, restricting silencers, shrinking magazine sizes and all the other measures that could make guns less deadly.

Then, my colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States, and I wound up frustrated in a whole new way. We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

She’s a Yalie and well known to a number of friends of mine, who speak highly of her.

This Supreme Court Case Puts 25 MILLION Employment Contracts at Stake

2nd October 2017

Read it.

The case concerns how employees may bring actions against their employers. Many employment contracts, some 25 million according to respondents lawyer Daniel Ortiz, contain provisions requiring employees to resolve disputes with employers in arbitration on an individual basis, effectively forbidding workers from organizing class actions. Critics of these provisions say they purposefully empower management at the expense of labor, since they inhibit workers from organizing to secure better contracts.

Though the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) provides that a contract provision requiring arbitration must be enforced, section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) establishes the right of workers to engage in “concerted activities” to secure mutual aid and protection. At issue in Monday’s case was whether the NLRA allows employers to enforce contracts requiring case-by-case arbitration.

2nd October 2017

If, of course, that’s what you want to do.

As nearly half of all Ashkenazi Jews can trace their lineage, via a particular genetic mark, to four women who emigrated from the Middle East to Europe about a thousand years ago, chances, Rabbi Carmel continued, “are high, statistically speaking, that anyone able to prove that they are the offspring of those four mothers is Jewish according to halacha.”

‘Millionaire’s Bacon’ Could Change the Face of the Fry-up Forever

30th September 2017

Read it.

More flavour-dense than its slender counterpart, millionaire’s bacon is typically half an inch thick and is slow-cooked for several hours.

“The taste is succulent, sweet and spicy with many different spices going in. It’s very complex,” said Hoyul Steven Choi, co-owner of Sweet Maple, a popular brunch spot in San Francisco that is renowned for its take on the elevated candied bacon dish.

He explained to the San Francisco Gate that the thick pieces of pork are covered in sugar and cayenne pepper before being left in the oven to cook for a few hours at a low temperature.

All Blue-Eyed People Have a Single Ancestor in Common

Rise Of the Tiny Machines: Boffins Cook Up Autonomous DNA Sorting Robot

20th September 2017

Read it.

While software developers might write algorithms for sorting, human and other organisms’ cells have their own biological ways for organizing the molecules inside them – such as how the proteins inside neurons are created in one spot and moved elsewhere.

Along that vein, researchers have shown pre-programmed DNA origami can perform tasks such as travelling in a line picking up molecular “cargo”. In the previous academic work with DNA robots, though, humans have had to give intermittent instructions (such as adding molecules into a test tube to produce a response) or they couldn’t see more than a couple tasks performed.

Texas Seems Primed to Land Amazon’s Second Headquarters

15th September 2017

Read it.

That’s going to burn so many Leftist butts, they’ll think it’s another hurricane.

The company laid out a pretty detailed wish list for its “HQ2” project, including a metropolitan area with more than one million people, on-site access to mass transit, a commute of 45 minutes or less to an international airport, easy access to a major highway or arterial road, and close proximity to good universities, plus fiber optic internet connections and strong cell phone service. “We want to invest in a community where our employees will enjoy living, recreational opportunities, educational opportunities, and an overall high quality of life,” Amazon’s announcement said, adding that the company is also looking for “communities that think big.”

Dallas would be a good pick — it’s got a central location in the U.S., a very good range of skilled and unskilled labor, and a low cost of living compared to either of the Left Coasts. If they pick one of the suburbs, they won’t even have to suffer from a KleptoDemocrat city administration.

Bezos moved from his native New Mexico to Houston as a toddler, and he spent his early schooling years in the Bayou city, attending River Oaks Elementary School and graduating in 1976 before moving to Florida as a sixth grader. He’s even cousins with George Strait.
