A U.S. District Court judge allowed a forestry company’s defamation lawsuit against Greenpeace and affiliated groups to proceed Tuesday, but dismissed racketeering claims leveled against the environmentalists.
It’s the latest development in a multi-year legal battle between Resolute Forest Products and Greenpeace.
“Although the Judge did not allow all of Resolute’s claims to proceed, we are pleased the proceedings will now move forward on our defamation and unfair competition claims against Greenpeace,” Seth Kursman, spokesman for Resolute, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Now researchers at the University of Washington have genetically modified a common houseplant — pothos ivy — to remove chloroform and benzene from the air around it. The modified plants express a protein, called 2E1, that transforms these compounds into molecules that the plants can then use to support their own growth. The team published its findings Dec. 19 in Environmental Science & Technology.
“People haven’t really been talking about these hazardous organic compounds in homes, and I think that’s because we couldn’t do anything about them,” said senior author Stuart Strand, who is a research professor in the UW’s civil and environmental engineering department. “Now we’ve engineered houseplants to remove these pollutants for us.”

Recently, Calhoun’s inquiry piqued the interest of researchers in the United Kingdom, who wondered if it was possible to identify an author from his or her punctuation alone.
For decades, linguists have been able to use the quirks of written texts to pinpoint the author. The process, called stylometric analysis or stylometry, has dozens of legal and academic applications, helping researchers authenticate anonymous works of literature and even nab criminals like the Unabomber. But it usually focuses on an author’s word choices and grammar or the length of his or her sentences. Until now, punctuation has been largely ignored.
But according to a recent paper led by Alexandra N. M. Darmon of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, an author’s use of punctuation can be extremely revealing. Darmon’s team assembled nearly 15,000 documents from 651 different authors and “de-worded” each text. “Is it possible to distinguish literary genres based on their punctuation sequences?” the researchers asked. “Do the punctuation styles of authors evolve over time?”
Apparently, yes.

Fascinating. I didn’t know that Hawaiians had pizza. Huh. Learn something new every day.
I was at a Shakey’s in Virginia Beach in the halcyon days of my youth that had a banana pizza, but I think that was a special case.

Once we have practical fusion power, oil and natural gas will be recognized as transitional technologies, like coal, and the world will get a lot cleaner. (Plus a lot of activists will have nothing more to complain about — although I’m sure they’ll think of something.)

The XtraVue Trailer is a standard caravan that “causes a trailer or caravan to appear invisible in the rearview mirror of the vehicle towing it,” according to a press release from the company. The system uses cameras placed on the rear bumpers of both the vehicle and the trailer to produce a single homogeneous image, which is fed to a small display placed in front of the driver. This theoretically allows drivers to see what’s happening behind the caravan, giving them a better idea of what’s also on the road.

I suppose this will be aimed at commercial use to start — laundromats and commercial laundry processing sites — but the $1000 price is well within household reach for the Usual Suspects. I don’t find folding laundry to be much of a burden (six years in the Navy will do that for you) but for genetically untidy people (you know who you are) this could be a great life-improver.

The effort to transform Khashoggi from the political operative he was into a journalist and martyr for freedom was an information operation waged largely in the United States. It targeted a diverse audience spanning from “echo chamber” commentators and media figures to politicians, who would then be moved to act based on the new attitude and information the campaign had inserted into the discussion. This operational aspect is of primary importance; as information operations always work to advance policy interests, in order to succeed, these perceptions must affect policymakers and cause them to alter policy.

The media finally got a tour of Elon Musk’s plan to revolutionize transportation in Los Angeles — and it didn’t go well for Musk.
…
But the company is also hedging. Earlier this week, it told Nelson that the tunnel is just an R&D for the Boring Company, which Musk says is aimed at revolutionizing the tunneling industry, one of the most complicated endeavors in civil engineering. It’s probably good that the company has offered an alternative explanation for the tunneling, because the whole concept of developing an underground road network is flawed. Musk’s tunnels are a lot like a subway, but with carrying capacity reduced to practically nothing.

The inconvenient truth of future 5G networks is that their increased high-speed bandwidth, and the use of the millimeter wave spectrum (the radio spectrum above 30 gigahertz) to achieve it, comes at a price: Those radio signals barely propagate around the corners of buildings.
To overcome this issue, the strategy has been a combination of small cells with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas to increase coverage. Small cell deployment will be so extensive that the Small Cell Forum predicts 5G small cell will overtake 4G small cells by 2024. The total installed base of 5G or multimode small cells will reach 13.1 million by 2025, constituting more than one-third of the total small cells in use.
