At Dimensional Energy, the method involves a reactor that houses a proprietary nanocatalyst material that effectively replaces the plant components that facilitate natural photosynthesis. Inside the reactor, the nanocatalyst and CO2 are exposed to sunlight and water, allowing the CO2 and water to break apart and reform into organic compounds called hydrocarbons, which can be used to make jet fuel.
The 60-day trial was a success, demonstrating not only that the technology works, but also that it could soon be cost competitive with traditional fuels.
We’ll find out.

The development of drugs to treat cognitive problems in patients with mental illness may be a step closer after a team of researchers discovered that an existing drug – used to treat constipation – may be able to boost our ability to think more clearly.
Severe psychiatric disorders can have a devastating impact on a patient’s life. Cognitive impairments – ranging from decreased attention and working memory to disrupted social cognition and language – are widespread in psychiatric disorders such as major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. These common problems are poorly treated with current medications and often have a large impact on people’s lives, and so scientists are searching for ways of improving or restoring these functions.

Can you imagine sound travels in the same way as light does? A research team at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) discovered a new type of sound wave: the airborne sound wave vibrates transversely and carries both spin and orbital angular momentum like light does. The findings shattered scientists’ previous beliefs about the sound wave, opening an avenue to the development of novel applications in acoustic communications, acoustic sensing, and imaging.

The technology behind cyclotech’s cyclo-rotors is a mechanism that was patented almost 100 years ago, although never before used for an aircraft. wing blades are integrated inside a spinning cylindrical tube to form each propeller. the angle of the blades can be changed during flight to enable rapid redirection. in comparison, other eVTOLs need time to transition from vertical to normal flight mode for take-off and landing.

“This project is a game changer for Habitat for Humanity,” said Janet V. Green, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “We’re selling an affordable home to a family four days before Christmas, and at the same time, we’re finding solutions to build more efficient homes.”
The three-bedroom house will feature 1,200 square feet of living space, as well as two full baths.
In order to complete the project, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg partnered with Alquist and broke ground in July. Alquist used concrete in place of lumber to 3D print the walls, saving an estimated 15% per square foot in building costs.

A breakthrough study by University of Alberta researchers has shown the fat cells that lie just beneath our skin shrink when exposed to the blue light emitted by the sun.
“When the sun’s blue light wavelengths-the light we can see with our eye-penetrate our skin and reach the fat cells just beneath, lipid droplets reduce in size and are released out of the cell. In other words, our cells don’t store as much fat,” said Peter Light, senior author of the study, who is a professor of pharmacology and the director of the U of A’s Alberta Diabetes Institute.
“If you flip our findings around, the insufficient sunlight exposure we get eight months of the year living in a northern climate may be promoting fat storage and contributing to the typical weight gain some of us have over winter,” added the Dr. Charles A. Allard Chair in Diabetes Research.

One of the examples that I use to show how much we’ve learned about biology (and how much we didn’t know, even in the relatively recent past) is RNA. Who could have predicted that there would turn out to be so many different kinds of the stuff? We all grew up hearing about the basics in school – messenger RNA, transfer RNA, ribosomal RNA if your introductory course got fancy. But short hairpin RNA? Double-stranded RNA? Long noncoding RNA? Circular RNA? MicroRNA? I know that I’m leaving some out, but I’m also sure that there are others that belong on that list that we haven’t even stumbled across yet. Either we don’t know where to look, or how to look (because our existing techniques might not pick them up), or we don’t understand what we’re looking at even if we come across them. And I don’t mean to give the idea that the classes above are all figured out, either. We’re just starting to get the first ideas about what some of these things do in the cell, and how they relate to health and disease. Scientists of 2060 or so will look back on us with some pity, because of all the important things that we just didn’t know yet back in the 2020s.

China has finished construction on an experimental thorium reactor that could greatly expand the number of people who can benefit from clean nuclear energy.
Fission basics: Nuclear power plants split atoms of fuel through a process called “fission.” This produces energy that can then be converted into electricity.
Nuclear power is more reliable than wind and solar, and the fission process doesn’t produce any climate-harming carbon emissions, making nuclear energy a potentially key weapon in the battle against climate change.
The challenge: Today, there are more than 400 nuclear power plants in operation across the globe, and the vast majority use uranium as a fuel and water to cool and moderate the fission process — but there are downsides to the status quo.
While uranium is about as common as tin, less than 1% of mined uranium is a specific kind that can undergo fission (uranium-235) — a process called “enrichment” is needed to increase uranium-235 levels in the mined metal, and it’s both complicated and expensive.??

Groundbreaking research from Australian scientists has revealed a likely cause of Alzheimer’s disease, the devastating condition that affects 5.8 million Americans. Using mouse models, the researchers built upon previous knowledge of beta-amyloid protein, already known to play a role in Alzheimer’s. They discovered how this toxic protein leaks through the blood-brain barrier to causes degenerative damage to brain cells.
According to Medical News Today, the findings have been called a “breakthrough,” and could lead to preventive strategies to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or slow its progression.

(Is there such a thing as a non-shoe cobbler?)
Shoe repair isn’t exactly a hobby one can simply fall into. Often, it’s the family business, passed on to the next generation. The store front, along with the machines, the customers, the skills are all transferred. “It’s wild to think that you used to be able to go to a trade school and take a course on shoe repair with a professor and a textbook,” Fortune says. “That’s not a thing anymore — you’re totally on your own.”
Getting into shoe repair is opaque, but Fortune had an in. His background in the fashion industry certainly gave him cursory knowledge of the trade, but it was a childhood friend whose family ran a shoe repair shop that really gave him a leg up. The shoe repair shop was in need of a refresh and Fortune pitched in to help. That’s where the shoe repairing journey started.

Making this paint really reflective, however, also made it really white, according to Purdue University. The paint reflects 98.1% of solar radiation while also emitting infrared heat. Because the paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it emits, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without consuming power.
Using this new paint to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet could result in a cooling power of 10 kilowatts. “That’s more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,” Ruan said.
“Great. Where can I buy it?” Well, you can’t.
“The paint is not available on the market yet,” Xiulin Ruan, the lead researcher on the project, told USA TODAY Thursday. “We are currently partnering with a large corporation towards commercializing the paint, and hopefully it will hit the market in a couple of years.”

It’s not easy being an editor. Sometimes, for example, an author might submit a three-page biography describing himself as “a renowned thought-leader and writer” and “one of the most creative analysts, visionaries, and political strategists of his generation.” A good editor might politely insist the author tone it down a bit to avoid coming across as a self-important psychopath. Matthew Dowd’s editor evidently did not think it was worth the hassle.

After Bill Gates told a UK think tank earlier this month that the Covid-19 vaccine ‘helps you with your health, but only slightly reduces transmission,” a flood of people pointed out that the billionaire vaccine proponent had essentially said the quiet part out loud – admitting that the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines ‘don’t work well’ and was ‘an explicit acknowledgement that the mRNA and rAdV vaccines for COVID are not working well.’
“We didn’t have vaccines that block transmission. We got vaccines that help you with your health, but they only slightly reduce the transmission. So, we need a new way of doing the vaccines,” is the exact quote.

The incident occurred Oct. 2, and roughly a month later the service announced the commanding officer, executive officer and chief of the boat were all relieved of command.
“That safety investigation board is not complete yet. But we know enough right now and as soon as this event happened, we shared it with the operational force, so they knew what happened,” Houston said, speaking at the Naval Submarine League symposium today.

A widespread view is that, yeah, sure, human genetic evolution used to be important, but then we invented culture maybe 10,000 years ago when we invented agriculture, and since then it’s been all cultural evolution. C0chran and Harpending argued instead in the Ten Thousand Year Explosion that recent rapid cultural evolution brought about moreselection pressure for genetic evolution. Today’s new paper is in line with their view.
