Stuff White People Like #90 Dinner Parties

19th March 2008

Read it.

Though many would have you believe that white people come of age at Summer Camp, it’s simply not the truth. Immediately following graduation but prior to renovating a house, white people take their first step from childhood to maturity by hosting a successful dinner party.

The dinner party is the opportunity for white people to be judged on their taste in food, wine, furniture, art, interior design, music, and books. Outside of dictatorships and a few murder trials, there might not be a more rigorous judgment process in the modern world.

Electrolux debuts intelligent “auto-focus” Inspiro oven

18th March 2008

I’d buy one, if I could afford it.

Same reason I drive a car with an automatic transmission: Young people have time to fiddle with their environment; adults have better things to do.

St. Patrick, Enlightener of Ireland

17th March 2008

Troparion, in Tone III

O holy hierarch Patrick, wonderworker equal to the apostles, enlightener of the Irish land: entreat the merciful God, that He grant our souls remission of transgressions!

Kontakion, in Tone IV

Thou wast shown to be a true fisher of men, for, spreading out the nets of the good news of the Gospel, thou didst draw the heathen into the kingdom of Christ, enlightening with baptism them that languish in the darkness of idolatry, and making them children of the living God. Wherefore, we beseech thee, O holy hierarch Patrick our father: intercede in behalf of us that honor thy holy memory.

Stuff White People Like #89 Saint Patrick’s Day

17th March 2008

Read it.

A big part of St. Patrick’s Day is having white people feel particularly upset at the oppression of their ancestors that has in no way trickled down to them. If you find yourself talking with a white person who tells you about how their great grandfather was oppressed by both the English and the Americans, it is strongly recommended that you lend a sympathetic ear and shake your head in disbelief. It is never considered acceptable to say: “but you’re white now, so what’s the problem?”

An Army Uniform Never Looked Better

15th March 2008

Take a look.

Actually, I’d rather get a closer look at the brunette behind her.

Is it just me, or does that blue patch on the beret look terminally stupid? The Brits put the regimental cap badge on their berets, which looks pretty sharp.

Stuff White People Like #88 Having Gay Friends

14th March 2008

Read it.

If white people could draft friends the way that the NFL drafts prospects it would go like this: black friends, gay friends, and then all other minorities would be drafted based on need and rarity to the region.

It is generally accepted that a gay black friend with a child  is considered a once in a lifetime opportunity – like a quarterback who can pass, run, kick, and play linebacker. White people will crawl over each other for the opportunity to claim this person as a friend and add them to their roster of diversity.

Ghosts of the partition

13th March 2008

Read it.

It is not a simple thing. Muslims slaughtered Hindus. Muslims helped Hindus. Hindus slaughtered Muslims. Hindus helped Muslims. And the amazing thing is that the British — looking forward to some idealistic age in which religion just wouldn’t matter all that much — tried to act as if religion already didn’t matter all that much.

India is on the front lines of the defense against Islam. What they went through could be in our future. It would be a very good idea if we all familiarized ourselves with what happened then. If you can’t afford to buy the book, get it from your local public library.

Shel Silverstein, of course, is the writer of the famous “Never Bite a Married Woman on the Thigh”. (And, of course, “The Cover of the Rolling Stone”, of which you might actually have heard.)

Energy Ad Campaign Targets Al Gore’s House

11th March 2008

Read it.

Rather harsh treatment for the guy who brings unseasonably cold whether wherever he goes.

I’m sure you’ve seen the classic picture from Time magazine of AlGore crouched in his lair, grinning like a loon at his three 30″ monitors (Macintosh, of course; must be avant garde), just like a 60-year old “my toys are cooler than your toys” geek. I’m sure he’s getting all that electricity from solar panels on the roof and wind turbines like Ed Begley’s.
