Dog breeds barely differ at all genetically

18th August 2010

Steve Sailer reminds us that large differences in phenotype come in small genotype packages.

So, in the big picture, Labrador retrievers and pit bulls don’t actually differ very much genetically. They do differ genetically on a very small number of genes. But some of those few genes that differ are related to biting. Labs tend to retract their teeth and gum whatever they’re handling with their mouths, while pit bulls tend to bite down and, more unusually, not let go while they whip their heads back and forth. So, that tiny, tiny fraction of the dog genome is important when deciding which breed of dog to buy depending on your needs — e.g., pet for your toddlers or guard dog for your crack stash.

Head-scratching puzzle: What lice have to say about human evolution

15th August 2010

Read it.

One of the more embarrassing mysteries of human evolution is that people are host to no fewer than three kinds of louse while most species have just one.

Even bleaker for the human reputation, the pubic louse, which gets its dates and residence-swapping opportunities when its hosts are locked in intimate embrace, does not seem to be a true native of the human body. Its closest relative is the gorilla louse. (Don’t even think about it.)

How mind mapping software can help you become a linchpin

13th August 2010

Read it.

On the other hand, the linchpin is the one that often shears under pressure. Take whatever action you deem appropriate.

Linchpin is all about doing remarkable work. One way to do that  is by being creative. Left to our own devices, we tend to do things that are well within normal. Looking at things creatively, on the other hand, opens up a world of new possibilities.

Few are more creative than a lazy person avoiding work. A word to the wise….

What is a Man?

13th August 2010

Freeberg lays it out.

8. He’s not in touch with his “feminine side” and does not wish to be.

17. He will take a bullet for the ones he loves. He knows who they are, and if the time comes, he’ll be there.

22. He does not drive his kids to school. His kids know how to do things, including how to get themselves to school.

24. He knows how to spell things. He knows how to use punctuation. He knows his homophones and homonyms. He has mastered the complexity of “it’s”.

ACLJ Poised to File Court Challenge to Proposed Ground Zero Mosque After NYC Declines to Landmark Historic Building

3rd August 2010

Read it.

“The actions taken by the City of New York represent a blatant disregard for the city’s own procedures, while ignoring the fact that this is a historic and hallowed site that should not be destroyed to build an Islamic mosque,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ. “It has been clear from the beginning that the city has engaged in a rush to push this project through – ignoring proper procedure and ignoring a growing number of New Yorkers and Americans who don’t believe this site is the place to build a mosque. We’re poised to file legal action on behalf of our client to challenge this flawed decision and put a stop to this project.”

Lost Arctic ship found 150 years after it was abandoned

28th July 2010

Canadian Archeologists were able to take sonar images of HMS Investigator at the weekend not long after they arrived at the remote Mercy Bay site in the Northwest Territories, Marc-Andre Bernier of Parks Canada said on Wednesday.

The Investigator was the British ship that was sent to search for two lost vessels that were part of Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 Royal Navy expedition to discover the Northwest Passage linking the Atlantic to the Pacific through Canada’s Arctic Archipelago.

Mexico: Ancient woman suggests diverse migration

24th July 2010

Anthropologists had long believed humans migrated to the Americas in a relatively short period from a limited area in northeast Asia across a temporary land corridor that opened across the Bering Strait during an ice age.

But government archaeologist Alejandro Terrazas says the picture has now become more complicated, because the reconstruction more resembles people from southeastern Asian areas like Indonesia.

How Texas Avoided the Great Recession

20th July 2010

Read it.

Not being run by Democrats is a good first step.

One reason that Texas did so well is that it fully escaped the “housing bubble” that did so much damage in California, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and other states. One key factor was the state’s liberal, market oriented land use policies. This served to help keep the price of land low while profligate lending increased demand. More importantly, still sufficient new housing was built, and affordably. By contrast, places with highly restrictive land use polies (California, Florida and other places, saw prices rise to unprecedented heights, making it impossible for builders to supply sufficient new housing at affordable prices (overall, median house prices have been 3.0 times or less median household incomes where there are liberal land use policies).

The Age of Limbaugh

16th July 2010

Jesse Walker at Reason magazine reviews the new biography.

It was the beginning of a big year for Limbaugh, a radio host whose influence had seemed to be waning not long before. Allies and critics alike were soon describing him as the “head of the Republican Party,” not least when the actual head of the Republican National Committee criticized the famous broadcaster only to quickly cave to rank-and-file pressure and apologize for his remarks. Beloved by the true-believing party base, disdained by center-right compromisers, and detested by the left, Limbaugh has towered over every noisy Washington debate of 2009 and 2010.

Limbaugh interacts directly with his audience. He doesn’t just speak but listens, and the callers don’t just listen but argue. Limbaugh is always in charge of the show, and he manipulates his medium like a master. But the intimacy of radio gives him a relationship with his followers that’s considerably different from that enjoyed by ordinary politicians and pundits.

The scientific secrets to a happy marriage

16th July 2010

Read it.

While diamond wedding anniversary celebrants might cite trust, loyalty and retaining a romantic spark as the secrets to matrimonial bliss, scientists have claimed the formula is far more complicated.

As if ‘scientists’ are going to claim that things are actually simpler than they seem.

Anneli Rufus, a journalist and author, has now delved into the archive of studies dedicated to the subject to compile a list of 15 warning signs that someone is heading for a divorce.

Sounds like a cover blurb for Cosmo, right next to the sweaty picture of Megan Fox.

The reasons range from the gender of a couple’s children to your partner’s race, testosterone levels and health.

Boy, that sure sounds ‘scientific’, doesn’t it?

Psychologists at Radford University came to the conclusions after devising a formula for calculating the probabilities of marital success based on a spouse’s career.

Hey, tenure doesn’t grow on trees, you know.
