My grandfather spent most of his life in Diyarbakir, a garrison town in southeastern Turkey. Magnificent old walls surround the city; built of black volcanic rock, they were begun by the Romans and then added to by Arabs and Ottomans. In 1915, the Ottomans turned the city, the surrounding province, and much of modern-day Turkey into a killing field, in a campaign of massacres and forced expulsions that came to be known as the Armenian genocide. The plan was to eradicate the empire’s Armenians—“a deadly illness whose cure called for grim measures”—and it was largely successful. The Ottomans killed more than a million people, but, somehow, not my grandfather.

Davutoglu’s Putin-Medvedev-style master, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is notorious for his Sunni supremacist (and anti-Alevi) views. During his election campaign in 2011, he reminded tens of thousands of party fans at rallies in seven different cities that his political rival and main opposition leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, was an Alevi. “You know, he is an Alevi,” Erdogan told crowds in a cynical way while thousands booed “the Alevi Kilicdaroglu.” In that election, Erdogan’s votes in all seven cities rose from the previous election.

Only three weeks before Davutoglu’s speech, a professional German-Turkish footballer, Deniz Naki, announced that he decided to leave his club and Turkey following a religious and racist attack. Naki, who in the past was the victim of abuses and insults for being a Kurdish Alevi and carrying a tattoo revealing his faith, had been attacked by unknown assailants in Ankara and suffered minor injuries. “This is the first warning,” the assailants told him. The footballer said he now feared to go out alone in Ankara and had decided to leave Turkey for Germany.

Tolerance in Islam is an aberration, not a virtue.

In the French news report below, you’ll see a woman explaining to the TV audience that the man who ran down a number of pedestrians in Dijon a couple of days ago while shouting “Allahu akhbar” was in fact a lunatic. He had a psychiatric history, had been institutionalized, etc. etc. It was had nothing to do religion; the attacker wanted to “commit a political act”.

Somebody should have explained to this well-meaning lady that politics, religion, and insanity converge in Islam. Islam is in fact the Perfect Storm of lunacy, politics, and religion.

Hence there is no moral equivalence here. What is the occasional and historically anomalous aberration for Christendom is the heart and soul of the Dar-el-Islam. What for us is a freakish departure from our code of conduct is their code of conduct. A more perfect and absolute evil than performing the most grotesque and nightmarish atrocities the vile imagination of man can conceive in the name of God does not exist. Even the Nazis were more civilized than this — they did not use nerve gas.

The battle is existential and absolute. Compromise or coexistence is not possible if the enemy is unwilling to compromise and coexist.

Islam is a charnel house. It was born in fire and blood and slaughter in the 7th century and has maintained the same modus operandi for the past fourteen hundred years.

When it is strong it wages aggressive jihad. It slaughters victims who refuse to convert. It takes slaves and distributes concubines to its warriors. It rapes and loots and destroys the wealth of civilized societies to feed its insatiable lust for booty and plunder, battening on the flesh of the prosperous. It reaps what it does not sow and harvests where it does not plant.

When it is weak, it goes into dormant mode. It turns its aggressive energies in upon itself, ferreting out blasphemy and unbelief and punishing the malefactors. Deprived of plunder, its cities fall into decay and desuetude. Poverty and degradation become the norm. The soldiers of Allah bide their time and await the moment when they may resume their rapacity.

With the emergence of the Islamic State in the Middle East, we are now moving out of a three-century hiatus of Islamic weakness into an era of renewed Islamic strength. What seems an unprecedented horror of bestial behavior is actually just a return to the Islamic norm as practiced before 1683 throughout the lands conquered by Islam.

All of the above is easily discoverable by any non-Muslim who cares to look into the matter. None of it is hidden. Yet the average Westerner is wearing a blindfold and earplugs when it comes to Islam. The arrant nonsense that is peddled by our media and our political leaders is swallowed by millions of people who should know better. And who could know better, if only they would raise a corner of the blindfold and take a little peek.

A non-Muslim who studies Islamic law in any depth soon learns that certain words have different meanings in Islam than they do in ordinary usage. Terms used in Islamic law that have specialized definitions include justice, peace, freedom, innocent, human rights, terrorism, slander, and any number of other seemingly commonplace English words and phrases.

Spokesmen for Islamic organization — and particularly those for Muslim Brotherhood front groups — rely on our ignorance about these “terms of art”. One reason that they are winning their information war with the West is that we simply do not understand what they really mean when they use these deliberately misleading words.

The following pronouncement originated with Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Rulings by Al-Azhar are instructive, because there is no higher authority on Sunni Islamic doctrine. The institution is the closest equivalent to the Vatican that can be found in Islam.

Al-Azhar has now declined to pronounce takfir against the Islamic State, which would have placed the Caliph and his followers outside of Islam. This raises an important question: if Al-Azhar — whose scholars know more about Sunni Islam than anyone else in the world — will not anathematize ISIS, how can dilettantes such as Barack Obama and David Cameron declare so confidently that the Islamic State “has nothing to do with Islam”?

Across Europe and America, governments and intelligence officials are struggling to address the problem of Western Muslims who join the jihad in Syria – and then come back home again. But in the process, they may be missing the bigger threat: the ones who never left.

Counterterrorism experts agree that the danger posed by returning jihadists is significant: already radicalized before they joined groups like the Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State (IS or ISIS), they are now well-trained in the practice of terrorist warfare. Early this morning a group of mujahideen from al-Shabaab slaughtered thirty-six non-Muslim quarry workers in northern Kenya. As in other recent attacks, the gunmen demanded that each worker recite verses from the Koran (or possibly the shahada). Those who were unable to do so were identified as non-Muslims, and shot.

CAIR and other Muslim Brotherhood front groups have been trying to worm their way into the current no-justice-no-peace uproar ever since the trouble began last summer in Ferguson, Missouri. The latest wrinkle involves an NFL star named Reggie Bush, who entered the debate to promote an equivalence between the “youths” of Ferguson and the “youths” of Palestine.

Of course! It’s obvious — why didn’t I notice the resemblance before?

A “youth” in Ferguson shoplifts from a store, roughs up the owner, attacks a cop, tries to take his gun, and gets shot for his efforts.

“Youths” in Palestine set up launchers, fire rockets at schools with them, and get shot (well, some of them do) for their efforts.

Yes, come to think of it, the two places have a lot in common.

Four weeks ago today Michael Zehaf-Bibeau went on a shooting spree on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, killing Corporal Nathan Cirillo at the Cenotaph before being shot to death himself inside the parliament building.

Mr. Zehaf-Bibeau, who called himself Joseph Paul Michael Abdallah Bulgasem Zehaf-Bibeau after he returned to his father’s religion, was more than a psychotic homeless crackhead. In his lunacy he had found a spiritual home, and his murderous actions were motivated by religion — specifically the Islamic religion.

Now, the United Arab Emirates has designated CAIR a terrorist organization. It also so designated the Muslim American Society (MAS).

In addition, the UAE made this designation for a long list of non-U.S. groups. Among them are al-Qaeda, al Nusra, Boko Haram, and the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a brief, nationally televised announcement on August 7th regarding the Islamic State, which invaded the multicultural, northern Nineveh Province of Iraq this summer, President Obama observed “these terrorists have been especially barbaric towards religious minorities, including Christian and Yazidis.”

Jabhat al-Nusra, like the Lebanse Shi’ite organization, is emerging as a movement that combines uncompromising jihadi ideology with tactical flexibility. Jabhat al-Nusra, the Islamist group which constitutes al-Qaida’s “official franchise” in Syria, this week carried out a successful offensive against Western-backed rebel militias in northern Syria. Key areas were captured.

YouTube’s infringement reporting system is — like many others around the web — fundamentally broken. Making bogus copyright claims is still an easy way to get channels shut down or to siphon ad revenue from existing videos. It can also be used as a censor — a cheap and dirty way to shut up critics or remove compromising video.

Apparently, Islamic extremists linked with Al-Qaeda have found another use for YouTube’s mostly automated dispute process: low-effort doxxing. According to German news sites, a YouTube channel (Al Hayat TV) known for its criticism of Islam has had to send its listed contact person into hiding after bogus copyright claims filed by extremists led to the exposure of his personal information.

On September 25th, someone using the name “First Crist, Copyright” filed bogus copyright complaints against Al Hayat TV. In order to prevent the channel from being shut down for multiple “strikes,” Al Hayat TV was forced to file a counter notification. But in order to do so, the channel operators had to expose sensitive information.

When there’s a war and only one side is actually fighting, guess who wins?

There have been at least three news stories over the past few days about the compulsory teaching of Islam in public schools. The most egregious one was from the UK, where a school sent out a letter to parents threatening to put a permanent “racist” notation on their children’s record unless the students were allowed to participate in a workshop on Islam — at parents’ own expense.

Then there were the parents in California who pulled their son from a school that was teaching him about Islam — not just the history of Islam, and not even just its practices, but the normative doctrines of Islam.

The third story concerns a father who was banned from the grounds of his daughter’s high school in Maryland after he vehemently protested the content on Islam contained in the curriculum for a course she was required to take.

Claudia Bandion-Ortner is a prominent Austrian politician and judicial official who also happens to be the Deputy Secretary General of the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, a Vienna think tank funded in large part by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Thanks to the recent rise of the Islamic State, Austrians, like most Westerners, have become more aware of the “fundamentalist” brand of Islam as practiced by the mujahideen of ISIS. The more astute members of the Austrian public have noticed the essential similarity between the doctrines, habits, and customs of Saudi Arabia and those of the Islamic State.

Judge Bandion-Ortner’s role has come under public scrutiny as a result of this heightened awareness. She got herself into a bit of trouble last week after giving an interview to a major news outlet. Public outrage was aroused by her ill-considered remarks about public beheadings in Saudi Arabia, but that’s not really the most appalling thing about this interview; it’s simply the most sensational. Her more humdrum responses are even worse: they reveal someone who has moved far beyond the status of “useful idiot” and become an active collaborator with Islam.

When three anonymous women allegedly have kinky sex with radio celebrity Jian Ghomeshi and are allegedly physically and/or verbally assaulted by him, the country goes into a tizzy.

However, when three anonymous Toronto girls are recruited by Islamic State to marry ISIS fighters overseas who are warring against Canada, and are subsequently rescued by our security agencies and released back into the community, Canada yawns.
