The fiancée of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi vowed to fight a Turkish court’s decision Thursday to move the trial of 26 Saudi suspects in the gruesome 2018 killing to Saudi Arabia, a ruling that human rights groups fear will spell an end to the case. Hatice Cengiz, who has been relentlessly ampaigning for justice in the years since Khashoggi’s murder, said Thursday that her fight “is not over.”

As The Washington Post reported, the decision Thursday marked “a stunning reversal by Turkey, which in the years after the killing of Khashoggi… went to extraordinary lengths to publicize the Saudi government’s role in the plot.” The report said: “More recently, though, [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan’s government has tried to improve ties with the kingdom as Turkey weathers one of its worst economic crises in decades,” the Post noted.

A mass shooting in Tel Aviv Thursday evening left at least two dead and at least eight more wounded, sending a central district into chaos as police hunted for possibly multiple attackers who fled.

What’s being widely reported as a terrorist attack targeted a bar on Dizengoff Street, which is typically on the weekends a crowded nightlife area. “As the street filled with ambulances and rescuers, police carried out searches for a gunman thought to have escaped, going door to door and telling people to stay inside and lock their doors,” The Times of Israel reports.

Salah Abdeslam is the only surviving member of the leadership group of Islamic terrorists who carried out the deadly attacks in Paris in November of 2015, including the hideous slaughter at the Bataclan café. Mr. Abdeslam’s trial in Paris has been underway since last year, and is expected to conclude sometime next month.

When I read the headline this morning about two people being shot dead in a McDonald’s restaurant in the Netherlands, I suspected the involvement of cultural enrichment in the crime. Multiple murder victims of an attack with firearms — in the Netherlands, that’s almost certain to involve persons with a migration background.

When I delved into the details, sure enough, the victims were “Turkish-Dutch”.

If that had happened in Texas (for example), there’s a very good chance that a bystander with a CCL would have put the shooter down in short order.

The problem with disarming your population, as almost all EU countries have done, is that you make the natives a shopping cart full of victims for those who are willing to ignore the law – like all criminals.

Ceuta and Melilla are two Spanish enclaves on the North African coast that share a border with Morocco. Both of them experience repeated attempts by large groups of migrants to force the border fence and gain access to Spain, and thus to the European Union.

The Iranian government is quietly ramping up the confiscation of private property owned by the country’s Baha’i faith community amid a “rising trend” of Iranian state-sanctioned land grabs and media propaganda campaigns targeting the religious minority, the Baha’i representative body warned on Wednesday.

Baha’i advocates said the Iranian government has been using court orders to seize the land in a “piecemeal fashion” in an attempt to “evade the notice of the international community.”

These were impressive numbers for a charity that seemed to focus on Somalis in Minnesota.

If you have followed along so far, please don’t miss this one. It focuses on Aimee Bock, the mastermind of the scheme implicating Feeding Our Future, and lays out the case in vivid detail including photographs of houses bought with taxpayer funds procured from the government in the course of the fraud.

No charges have been brought (sealed or unsealed) and no arrests have been made. Based on the warrants, however, I infer the charges will come. The search warrants establish the existence of assets — “real estate, cars, and other luxury items,” as the search warrant affidavit below states in paragraph 7 — that can be seized and liquidated to mitigate the fraud. The government cannot let it ride. Indeed, the FBI seized certain of Bock’s assets in the course of its January 20 search of her residence. According to her attorney, Bock has been advised that she is a target of the investigation.

This is what comes from allowing large groups of people from countries where corruption and government cronyism is an ancient tradition to clot together in America where the culture isn’t prepared to deal with them.

I’ve reported in the past about the unpleasant antics of asylum seekers in the Netherlands on buses and trains. The “youths” tend to become violent when asked to produce a ticket, so the government attempted to solve the problem by setting up a special free bus service reserved exclusively for culture-enrichers. The Taliban is moving to cash in on Afghanistan’s stockpile of highly coveted rare earth minerals, including lithium and uranium, which can be used to power weapons.

In the latest issue of its Arabic language monthly magazine Al-Somood the Taliban details its “Campaign to build the Islamic emirate,” according to a translation of the article by the Middle East Media Research Institute, which tracks extremist groups.

Since taking control of Afghanistan following the Biden administration’s deadly evacuation from the war-torn country, the Taliban has worked to create a “jihadi army” and establish itself in the lucrative trade of rare earth minerals, which could provide the terror group with cash from countries such as China that are heavily invested in that sector.

Yemen’s Houthi militants have escalated ballistic missile and drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates as part of their war against the Saudi-led coalition that supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government in Yemen’s ongoing civil war.

These continuing Houthi attacks are part of a broader Iranian-orchestrated proxy shadow war against the U.S. and its allies in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Syria, which has escalated in recent weeks.

On Monday, the UAE government announced that its armed forces had shot down two ballistic missiles targeting its capital city, Abu Dhabi, launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, a radical Shia Islamist movement backed by Iran.

Why the Saudis don’t just go into Yemen and clean it out like a gourd has always puzzled me.

The Taliban, which took control of Afghanistan after President Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal of American troops from the country, smashed in the door of a Kabul apartment to arrest a women’s rights advocate and her sisters, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

Tamana Zaryabi Paryani took part in a Sunday protest against the Taliban’s mandate that women wear hijabs, Islamic headscarves. In response, 10 armed men who said they were from the Taliban intelligence department raided Paryani’s apartment on Wednesday.

In Austria the negotiations with Iran to revive the 2015 treaty that ended sanctions (if Iran halted work on nukes) are not going well. There have been eight rounds of talks since the new, hardline Iranian government took power in August 2021. This was the result of the 2020 national elections which were rigged, as they traditionally are, so the new president would be Ibrahim Raisi, an infamous mass-murderer and recognized war-criminal. Putting Raisi into such a public position is another example of how desperate Iran is to make clear to opponents in Iran, Yemen, Iraq and elsewhere what they are up against. Raisi insisted that Iran would not negotiate with the West until the 2018 sanctions were first lifted. Nations seeking to negotiate a new peace deal with Iran discovered that Raisi had the support of the religious dictatorship in Iran as well as the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) for this desperate, “all or nothing” negotiating strategy.

The hostage crisis at Congregation Beth Israel, a Reform Temple in Texas, ended with Faisal Akram of Blackburn, another post-industrial English town where Muslims make up a third of the population and Pakistanis account for over 10 percent, dead, and his Jewish hostages set free.

Back home, the Blackburn Muslim Community page announced that “Faisal Akram has sadly departed from this temporary world” and prayed that Allah “bless him with the highest ranks of Paradise”.

Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker and three others were held at gunpoint for hours on Saturday at Congregation Beth Israel by Malik Faisal Akram, a 44-year-old foreign national. At around 9:15 p.m., with the synagogue surrounded by heavily armed police and FBI agents, Cytron-Walker saw an opportunity to make an escape.

In the last hour of the standoff, the gunman “wasn’t getting what he wanted. It didn’t look good, it didn’t sound good,” Cytron-Walker told CBS News. When the rabbi saw Akram “wasn’t in a good position,” he told his fellow hostages to rush for the exit.

“I told them to go, I threw a chair at the gunman, and I headed for the door,” Cytron-Walker said. “And all three of us were able to get out without even a shot being fired.”

After the hostages ran out of the synagogue, police swept the building and Akram was shot dead.

Drone wars in the Middle East intensified Monday when Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed to have flown drones into an oil storage facility in Abu Dhabi, reported Al Arabiya.

Abu Dhabi police said three tanker trucks exploded in an oil storage facility owned by the state-owned oil company Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the industrial Musaffah area. Another explosion was reported at an extension of Abu Dhabi’s airport.

Iran is still suffering from reimposed (in 2018) economic sanctions but, as expected, the new (in January 2021) U.S. government has provided some relief. The Americans have been helpful in several ways, not all of them very visible. For example, the Americans quietly reduced their sanctions enforcement on illegal Iranian oil exports during 2021. This enabled Iranian oil smugglers to ship and sell 40 percent more oil than in 2020. That’s 123 million more barrels of oil sold at a discount, from the world price for legal oil, to countries like China, Syria, Russia and Venezuela. In 2021 the U.S. halted enforcement of the oil export sanctions in the Persian Gulf, which made it possible for smugglers to sell discounted Iranian oil to Arab Persian Gulf countries, mainly the UAE, where that oil could then be exported as Arab oil to distant customers. Iran has a fleet of tankers, most not owned by Iran, that handle the smuggling and American efforts to track and sanction these tankers declined as did the number of times smuggling tankers were detected but not intercepted. Because of this Iran had several hundred million dollars of oil income that was apparently used mainly to sustain Iran-sponsored violence overseas.

The Council on American Islamic Relations denied any connection between the terror attack at a Texas synagogue and its campaign to free imprisoned terrorist Aafia Siddiqui, one day after a fanatical gunman took Jewish congregants hostage to demand Siddiqui’s release.

CAIR has been a longtime advocate for clemency for Siddiqui, a terror operative who was dubbed “Lady al Qaeda” and sentenced to 86 years in prison in 2010 for trying to gun down U.S. FBI and military officials. During a joint press conference with Siddiqui’s attorney on Sunday, CAIR’s Dallas director Faizan Syed said it had no prior relationship to the the assailant, British national Malik Faisal Akram, and that his actions should not detract from efforts to seek clemency for Siddiqui.

It’s been a while since Isis staged a major attack on the West. Occasionally the group’s degraded propaganda organs will try and claim one, but even that is less common nowadays. Still, just because Isis central isn’t orchestrating mass murder in Europe, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t still people killing in the name of jihad — if anything, the Islamist terror threat is still claiming many more lives and much more frequently than we realise.

The overwhelming focus from authorities, political leaders and the press has become the personal and psychological dramas of the perpetrators. After every incident, the attackers’ pasts are combed and every twist and turn in their tangled biographies is retrospectively injected with significance and relevance to their (often much later) decision to kill.

Of course, the personal profiles of perpetrators are important, but the resultant disconnection of the spate of stabbings, vehicular attacks and, less frequently, shootings and bombings across Europe leaves us in danger of prematurely writing off the lingering jihadist threat.
