Lifeguards in the Swiss city of Basel are calling for urgent action after repeated problems with groups of young people of migrant descent—mainly from nearby France—causing trouble at the city’s public swimming pools.

The situation is especially tense at the popular St. Jakob garden pool, where staff say they’ve faced insults, threats, and even intimidation while trying to enforce the rules.

In a letter sent to city authorities, the lifeguards said the young visitors, often of North African background, regularly ignore hygiene rules.

Staff report being surrounded and harassed when asking people to follow the rules. Regular Swiss guests are reportedly staying away due to the chaotic atmosphere.

The lifeguards are demanding stronger security and clearer dress codes. One internal message even warned that if this continues, “what do we do then, call in the army?”

As we recently reported, the Swiss town of Porrentruy (Pruntrut) has barred entry to its municipal outdoor swimming pool to anyone who is not a Swiss citizen, resident, or officially employed in Switzerland. The drastic measure follows a wave of harassment and violent behaviour—much of it reportedly committed by French nationals crossing the border.

Meanwhile, public swimming pools have become the stage for a rising tide of sexual violence in Germany. According to recent data, 65% of the suspects in sexual assaults recorded in German pools during 2024 did not hold German citizenship.

A Syrian migrant has reportedly bitten off part of an Israeli tourist’s ear in Athens, shouting ‘Free Palestine.’

The alleged victim of the attack, Stav Ben Shoshan, was with his wife at a local beach when assaulted by a group of Syrian migrants. He lost part of his ear to a man shouting “I am Hamas!” who overheard the couple talking to two elderly Israelis in Hebrew.

A representative of Israel’s foreign ministry told journalists that the “attacker is under arrest. We are in contact with him and with the authorities.”

Migrants shouting “To hell with Israel” fit in with a pattern of antisemitic violence seen in Europe this summer. Earlier in July, a group of Israeli teenagers were attacked outside a nightclub in Rhodes, Cyprus.

The suspicion that many analysts and British citizens have harboured for months has now been confirmed: the Online Safety Act, introduced as a pioneering piece of legislation to protect minors from harmful content on the internet, in reality serves a much more anti-democratic purpose. Labour MP Barry Gardiner acknowledged on Monday, July 28th, in an interview with GB News that the law also aims to identify and restrict content deemed “harmful,” including expressions of “sentiments contrary to immigration.”

This admission marks a turning point in the debate over freedom of expression in the United Kingdom. Until now, the Labour government had avoided explicitly confirming that the law had an ideological and repressive component, hiding behind the rhetoric of child safety. But Gardiner’s statements have removed any ambiguity.

A Syrian man, identified as Wassim Al?M., has been formally charged with attempted murder, dangerous bodily harm, and attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organisation over a stabbing attack that severely injured a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial in February.

The victim, a 30-year-old man from the Basque Country of northern Spain, sustained life-threatening neck injuries.

Prosecutors allege Wassim carried out the stabbing at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe with the explicit aim of killing Jews, motivated by extremist Islamist and antisemitic views.

The suspect “shares the ideology of the foreign terrorist organisation Islamic State,” federal prosecutors said in a statement.

A vast network of anti-Israel groups has found “alternative fiscal sponsorships” after a main backer, the Westchester People’s Action Coalition (WESPAC), was exposed in a number of lawsuits as the financial powerhouse underwriting the nationwide campus protest movement, a new watchdog report shows.

WESPAC, a nonprofit headquartered in the affluent New York suburb White Plains, served until recently as the official “fiscal sponsor” for many of the organizations orchestrating violent and often anti-Semitic demonstrations on college campuses across the country. With WESPAC now embroiled in nationwide lawsuits, its partner organizations have been forced to find new benefactors and alternate fundraising channels.

WESPAC’s financial relationships with numerous pro-terror groups allowed it to accept tax-deductible donations on behalf of many organizations “directly responsible for targeting Jews with antisemitic rhetoric and creating a hostile environment across the United States,” according to a new report by NGO Monitor, which tracks anti-Israel funding networks. Those organizations include National Students for Justice in Palestine, Within Our Lifetime, the Palestinian Youth Movement, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the Palestinian Feminist Collective, and Adalah-NY.

On Saturday, July 26th, pro-Palestinian activists disrupted Mass at La Madeleine, one of the largest churches in Paris, by bursting in during Mass to chant their slogans.

Five people entered the building while Mass was being celebrated. They shouted “Long live Palestine!” while waving Palestinian keffiyehs. The words “Gaza” and “genocide” rang out in the church, along with the question, “What is the Church doing about this?” They read aloud a text calling for an end to attacks on Palestinian civilians and for respect for international humanitarian law.

Several worshippers, disturbed in their prayers, asked them to leave. Among them were two police officers, who contained the troublemakers and called for reinforcements. The police arrived on the scene and evacuated them. During questioning on the steps of the church, the protesters explained that they had planned similar actions during Sunday morning Masses in other Parisian churches. However, no further attacks were reported.

The priest of La Madeleine, Msgr. Patrick Chauvet, former rector of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, decided to file a complaint. “This is a real blasphemy in the middle of the distribution of the Eucharist. They seemed to be mocking this central moment for Christians,” he told the press, obviously shocked.

The priest tried to engage in discussion with the protesters but was met with a wall of resistance. “I asked them to show some respect for the place and for Holy Communion. For us Christians, this is the most important thing. It is a treasure. They were desecrating that treasure. But the response was chilling: ‘That’s the way it is. The genocide in Gaza is more important,’” he told journalists from Tribune chrétienne. “No, genocide is not more important than the Eucharist,” he replied in his defence.

A large portion of the conversation on the Middle East currently revolves around reports of starvation in Gaza—indeed, this is supposed to be part of the reason France’s Emmanuel Macron is preparing to officially recognise a Palestinian state.

Yet Hamas’ opposition to a humanitarian foundation, which says it has distributed almost 100 million meals in Gaza since late May, appears to have gone largely underreported.

The Wall Street Journal reported late last week that the terror group had the shutting down of this U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) as the “no. 2 item” on its “list of demands in ceasefire negotiations on Thursday.” The paper also quoted an American official who said the GHF has “caused Hamas more fear than anything else has in the past two years.”

Human rights lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky explained that this was because the foundation “works.”

Passengers onboard a short flight from London Luton to Glasgow were forced to deal with an imposing man who “pushed” female flight attendants and said “I’m going to bomb the plane” on Sunday morning.

Armed with guns and machetes, members of the Islamist ‘Allied Democratic Forces’ raided a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a nighttime Mass on Sunday and killed more than 40 Christians.

More than 100 people in the northeastern city of Komanda were taking part in the Catholic service at the time of the attack, celebrating the parish’s 25th anniversary. Nine children were among those killed, and others—aged between 12 and 14—were taken hostage.

The death toll from an attack on a Catholic church in eastern Congo by Islamic State-backed rebels has risen to 34, according to a civil society leader.

“The bodies of the victims are still at the scene of the tragedy, and volunteers are preparing how to bury them in a mass grave that we are preparing in a compound of the Catholic church,” Dieudonne Duranthabo, a civil society coordinator in Komanda, in the Ituri province, told The Associated Press.

At least five other people were killed in an earlier attack on the nearby village of Machongani, from where a search is ongoing.

New data shows that 40 percent of all suspects identified in school violence in 2024 were not German citizens, with Syrians at the top of the charts.

In total, there were 4,254 foreign suspects and 7,309 suspects with German citizenship, the German government announced in response to a parliamentary inquiry from Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP Martin Hess.

Of the 11,558 suspects in total, 1,236 had Syrian passports, representing one in ten violent incidents, according to the data, which was provided to Welt newspaper.

In second place were Afghans, who represented 3.6 percent of all suspects.

A British woman held as a hostage by Hamas in a “tiny cage” in tunnels beneath Gaza for 471 days has spoken about the horrors she endured.

Emily Damari, 29, was kidnapped by the Palestinian group from her kibbutz during the October 7, 2023 massacre. Militants shot two of her fingers, which had to be amputated, and fragments of another bullet lodged in her leg. Damari was taken to Gaza, where she was held in Hamas’s tunnels before she was released along with 32 other hostages in a short-lived ceasefire deal in January.

Damari said she was held with up to six hostages in a “tiny cage” measuring only two metres by two metres. Her fellow hostages included her best friends Gali and Ziv Berman, who are twin brothers. The 27-year-old twins are among the 50 hostages yet to be released, 20 of whom are still thought to be alive.

In front of Berlin’s Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), the seat of the city’s mayor, nearly 400 men—many of them reportedly Syrian refugees—publicly celebrated the recent massacres committed against the Druze community in Syria. Eyewitnesses report that chants included “Out with the Druze!” and “Today we liberate Suweida, we will break the Druze,” along with calls for rape, murder, and ethnic cleansing. Although 65 police officers were present at the scene, they did not intervene.

The NGO Democ, which monitors extremist activity, also reported antisemitic chants such as “Bring the Israeli flag so we can burn it!” Many of the slogans were later disseminated by the demonstrators themselves on social media. Democ director Linus Kebba Pook sharply criticized the authorities, saying, “In other protests, the police use interpreters to detect incitement to hatred. Why not here?”

In 2024, nearly 40% of suspects in school violence cases across Germany did not hold German citizenship, according to government data released in response to a parliamentary query. Of the 11,558 suspects identified, 4,254 were foreign nationals, including 1,236 Syrians and 421 Afghans.

The total number of violent incidents recorded at schools last year reached 35,570, averaging nearly 100 cases per day. Some incidents involved multiple suspects. Over 740 of the crimes involved knife attacks, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Fourteen federal states reported an increase in school violence compared to 2023. Collectively, these states recorded about 1,500 more violent incidents than the previous year. Bavaria, Hesse, and Brandenburg were among those reporting significant rises.

AfD domestic policy spokesman Martin Hess blamed the increase on mass immigration and called for tighter border controls, more deportations of criminal foreigners, and an end to what he described as the “multicultural experiment.”

According to the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, approximately 8,000 people reapplied for protection with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) between January and May. The total for 2024 exceeded 26,000.

EU rules allow recognised asylum seekers to travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, under EU regulations, individuals who have already received protection in one member state are not permitted to file a new asylum claim in another. “Persons who have been granted protection in Greece must also claim protection there,” the Interior Ministry clarified.

Reports indicate that many of these recognised refugees arrive in Germany by air, and then stay on indefinitely, after—illegally—applying for protection again. The German Police Union (GdP) has expressed concern that current airport checks may be insufficient to manage such movements effectively.

The situation has prompted renewed public and political discussion. Alice Weidel, co-leader of the AfD party, commented on social media: “Around 8,000 ‘refugees’ already recognised in Greece travelled on to Germany in 2025 to apply for ‘protection’ here. This is absurd—we have long been calling for comprehensive checks and rejections at our airports.”

As Germany continues to navigate complex migration dynamics, policymakers are once again facing calls to review border procedures and ensure better coordination at the European level.

Thousands of asylum seekers in the UK have used pre-paid Aspen cards—intended for basic needs like food and clothing—to access gambling venues, including casinos, amusement arcades and bookmakers, according to Home Office data released under freedom of information laws.

Up to 6,537 individuals were found to have used the cards at least once in such venues over the past year. The government is now investigating the misuse, amid public and political backlash.

Critics, including Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, called the figures “an insult to taxpayers,” accusing migrants of abusing state support and calling for stricter controls and removals. Reform UK and local officials have echoed these concerns, warning the scandal may be fuelling a growing gambling industry in migrant-heavy areas.

Aspen cards are issued to around 80,000 asylum seekers who are not allowed to work and are living at public expense, often in hotels. Although the cards are not meant for gambling or online use, loopholes—such as cash withdrawals inside gambling venues—appear to have enabled misuse.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has decided to implement his threats against the Algerian government and is going on the offensive: forty Algerian dignitaries are to have privileges they have enjoyed for many years withdrawn. The French government intends to show its anger at the Algerian authorities’ deadlock on the issue of deportations and the case of writer Boualem Sansal.

Discussions between Paris and Algiers have stalled, and no improvement is in sight.

In the space of a month, Algiers has refused to accept no fewer than four Algerian nationals deported from France. Le Journal du Dimanche revealed that one of them, known for Islamist radicalisation, was deported to Algeria on July 17th, but the authorities cited the lack of a consular pass and refused him entry into the country. However, he had a valid passport that should have allowed him to return to Algeria without difficulty. Despite this, the individual returned to France on the same day, dealing a blow to the minister of the interior, whose deportation orders ultimately prove ineffective. Three other men have experienced the same scenario and are now crowding administrative detention centres on French soil.

German police union GdP has issued a stark warning about the city’s rising gang violence, with spokesman Benjamin Jendro describing the situation as a permanent state of street fights involving machetes, knives, and firearms “practically every weekend.”

“It is a big problem,” he said, adding that rival gangs are battling over “drug trafficking, prostitution, and protection rackets.”

Jendro further expressed concern about the growing visibility of these violent clashes, saying rival networks, including Arab, African, and Chechen clans, are all seeking their share: “They want a piece of this big cake.”

Another police union, the DPolG union, recently branded the capital’s streets “Wild West,” following a violent clash in Neukölln involving stone-throwing and stab wounds.

The union’s Berlin state chair Bodo Pfalzgraf stated bluntly: “The state’s authority is eroding, because the police are not taken seriously.” He urged the government to enact swift and firm justice.

Nearly 99% of serious terrorism cases in Germany during the first half of 2025 involved foreign nationals or Islamist extremists, according to newly released federal data. Of the 146 proceedings launched by the Federal Prosecutor General between January and June, 84 were linked to Islamist terrorism and 60 to other forms of foreign-related extremism.

Only two cases involved right-wing extremism, and none were tied to left-wing groups. The figures—published in response to a parliamentary inquiry—raise questions about Germany’s current security priorities and whether public debate is focused on the most pressing threats.

The Federal Prosecutor General’s office, which handles serious national security offenses including terrorism and espionage, released the figures in response to a parliamentary inquiry. The data reflects ongoing challenges associated with global extremist networks and highlights the complexity of ensuring internal security in a diverse and open society.

Member of Parliament Martin Hess, of the right-wing AfD, said the figures should serve as a wake-up call, urging a more honest and balanced public debate on extremism. He argued that the data clearly point to the growing threat of imported radicalisation and called for it to be taken far more seriously. He also called for stricter migration and security measures, including enhanced deportation policies for foreign nationals involved in extremist activity.

While public and political debate in Germany often centers on the threat of right-wing extremism, these findings show where the real problem lies. The figures also show a notable increase in cases compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting ongoing security challenges both domestically and internationally.

The southern French city of Nîmes, home to over 150,000 people, has decided to implement a nightly curfew for minors under the age of 16 as a desperate attempt to curb the spread of gang violence largely linked to drug trafficking in the city’s migrant-heavy neighborhoods.

The curfew runs between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and came into effect on the night of Monday, July 21st, for an initial two-week period that can be renewed every 15 days.

According to local authorities, the radical measure is needed because of “a succession of shootings, score-settling, and gang tensions” that have been gripping the city for the past weeks.

An 18-year-old man with Macedonian roots has been arrested in Austria on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks against “Western institutions.” The radicalized youth, reportedly born and raised in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district of Upper Styria, was apprehended on Sunday, July 20th, upon entering Austria, following a tip from a foreign intelligence agency.

According to the Austrian authorities, the suspect had been researching bomb-making and attack methods online and is believed to support a foreign Islamist terrorist organization. The Styrian State Office for State Security and Combating Extremism launched an investigation into his activities, and the Leoben Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered his immediate arrest. Although the suspect denied planning any attacks during questioning, a request for pre-trial detention has been submitted.

This is not the first time Austria has faced terrorism-related incidents involving radicalized youth. In Vienna, a 15-year-old is currently on trial for allegedly planning an ISIS-inspired attack at the city’s Westbahnhof station, after pledging allegiance to the terrorist group and researching weapons and explosives. In a separate case in Germany, a Syrian teenager is being prosecuted for his role in a planned bombing targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, where he allegedly translated bomb-making instructions and supported the main suspect.

These cases highlight a disturbing pattern of extremist plots emerging across the region.

Matt’s wife is from Eastern Europe. She loves England as much as he does, which is why she wanted to come here over a decade ago. Anti-social behaviour is up. Meanwhile, Matt’s mortgage, monthly bills, grocery shop, insurance, and general cost of living are crippling him and his family. He feels crushed and alienated from his own land.

As a self-employed worker, every six months, he sees the taxman come knocking and fleecing him of everything he has managed to save. At the same time, he increasingly feels that his tax money is put to poor use. He complains to me of illegal immigrants being housed in hotels throughout the country, the NHS collapsing and yet focusing its efforts on so-called ‘transgender re-alignment surgeries,’ or as Matt calls them, “chopping nobs off.”

Eventually, the conversation goes where it so often does nowadays: the rape-and-torture Muslim gangs, and the imprisonment of politically incorrect Tweeters like Lucy Connolly. “Why am I ‘far-right’ for being annoyed about all these Muslims raping kids?” Matt rhetorically asks me.

Over half the self-employed labourers Matt knows have already left the country. Some have gone to Australia, others to Poland, one to Hungary. “There isn’t so much LGBTLMNOP rubbish over there—it’s better for the kids,” he says.

At the Cesare Beccaria juvenile detention centre in Milan, approximately seven out of ten detainees are Muslim, largely second-generation immigrants—a striking demographic imbalance that authorities describe as a ticking social time bomb, Italian daily Il Giornale writes.

These minors have typically been detained for robbery, drug dealing, or violent offences.

Many come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds, with low school attendance and deep alienation from Western norms, factors that increase their vulnerability to extremist ideologies.

Officials fear that exposure of these young people to inmates who promote radical Islamist beliefs could easily lead to indoctrination and violent extremism.

In response, prison authorities have recently introduced Abdullah Tchina, a moderate imam, into the facility. His mission: to counter radical narratives and support young detainees in navigating religious identity and social rehabilitation.

However, the move has sparked debate. MP Riccardo De Corato of the governing conservative Fratelli d’Italia party criticised the initiative, warning that the imam might worsen the situation rather than aid rehabilitation.

On Sunday, July 20th, a demonstration outside Düsseldorf’s central train station erupted into a large-scale brawl involving approximately 50 to 100 Syrians and Kurds, resulting in injuries to four police officers.

The conflict erupted when a Kurdish group, estimated at 400 to 500 protesters rallying against Syria’s military actions toward the Druze minority, was suddenly confronted by a smaller group of around 200 Syrians, who moved over from a separate rally.

According to police, the Syrians initiated the confrontation, targeting the Kurdish protesters. The altercation quickly escalated, with both sides hurling bottles and stones at one another.

During the chaos, four officers sustained injuries while attempting to restore order. It remains unclear whether any civilians were hurt.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of tensions within Germany’s diaspora communities. A parallel riot also occurred in Berlin–Kreuzberg on the same day, where armed Kurdish militants attacked Turkish men near a convenience store using glass bottles, metal bars, and knives.

More than 100 protesters were arrested during Gaza demonstrations alleged to support the proscribed terror group Palestine Action. It’s the third consecutive weekend of protests against the ban, which was instituted in late June.

The arrests, on Saturday, July 19th, stem from campaigning coordinated by ‘Defend Our Juries,’ which seeks to push back against the criminalisation of ‘direct action’ group Palestine Action. There were 65 arrests in London, 17 in Bristol, 16 in Manchester and six in Truro, Cornwall. Many of those arrested had displayed placards or T-shirts that were worded or typeset in ways that implied support for the illegal organisation and were designed to test the law.

Previously, local police have been criticised for their ‘two-tier policing’ of pro-Palestine marches. Now, one problem of using the serious vandalism committed by Palestine Action to group it with Hamas, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS in English law is becoming clear: its supporters can present themselves as ‘free speech martyrs’ when arrested (despite having zero commitment to free speech themselves, including for that of their ally Peter Tatchell). Meanwhile Iran’s murderous Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps still remains legal in Britain.

In the wake of the terrorist attack that claimed 25 lives at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in the Syrian capital of Damascus on June 22nd, reports confirm that the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) forces and affiliated groups are escalating their campaign of persecution and violence against Christians, Druze, and other ethnoreligious minorities.

Currently, the Druze towns are being attacked by Islamists, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, or Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the former head of the Syrian al-Qaeda, who conquered Damascus last December.

The violence erupted in the predominantly Druze city in the province of Suwayda (also known as Sweida) on July 12, two days after a Druze merchant was reportedly abducted on the highway to Damascus. Suwayda is known for its Druze majority but also has a significant Christian population, primarily Greek Orthodox and some Catholic Christians.

It is the latest outbreak of deadly jihadist violence in the country since al-Qaeda-affiliated HTS forces—with the help of Turkey—overthrew Syria’s Assad regime.

Israel on Saturday rejected Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s renewed promise to protect minorities following a wave of deadly sectarian violence, warning that Syria remains a dangerous place for non-Sunnis.

More than 700 people have been killed in Syria’s Sweida province since Sunday, as Druze communities came under attack in escalating clashes involving Sunni Bedouins, Islamist-led government forces, and armed tribal factions. Israel was drawn in after reports of atrocities against Druze civilians.

“Bottom line: In al-Sharaa’s Syria, it is very dangerous to be a member of a minority—Kurd, Druze, Alawite or Christian,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar posted on X. “This has been proven time and again over the past six months.”

Saar said the international community has a “duty to ensure the security and rights of the minorities in Syria” and should make any future diplomatic recognition of Syria conditional on the protection of those groups.

On Saturday, Syrian interior ministry forces began moving into the Druze heartland under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Earlier in the week, Israel had carried out airstrikes on regime forces in Sweida and Damascus in response to reports of summary executions and other abuses targeting Druze civilians.

Israel, which has a sizeable Druze population of its own, said it acted to protect the minority from government violence.

Every Muslim-dominated regime oppresses ‘minorities’ sooner or later; often the ‘minority’ in question is merely a group of people who differ in their interpretation of Islam (‘heretics’). But Christians and Jews are always fair game.

The unprecedented case emerged this week after the High Court lifted a super-injunction that had concealed the fallout from a 2022 Ministry of Defence data breach—described as the most damaging in British history. The leak, caused by a Royal Marine’s email error, exposed thousands of Afghans linked to UK forces to potential Taliban retaliation.

The government responded by launching a classified evacuation programme, the Afghanistan Response Route. But court rulings significantly expanded the definition of “family member,” allowing claimants to bring in large extended families—regardless of blood or legal ties.

Over 23,000 migrants have illegally crossed the English Channel so far this year, according to the latest unofficial tally of landings on the Kent coast.

The latest surge—over 320 crossings on Thursday, July 17th—brought the total to a politically charged milestone, now 55% higher than at the same point last year.

Although the Home Office usually issues a ‘Red Day’ warning when good weather encourages crossings, the latest arrivals on Friday, July 18th, happened in heavy Channel fog.

So far, over 46,000 migrants have crossed illegally since Labour leader Keir Starmer became Prime Minister. The strain of housing new arrivals—and reports of crimes linked to some migrants—is fuelling local tensions, most recently in Epping, Essex. Public frustration has grown further after footage emerged showing French police giving water and life jackets to migrants as they waited for boats to take them to England.

Despite recent agreements with France and Germany, people-smuggling operations in the Channel show no signs of slowing down.

Germany’s native birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in nearly 30 years, while births to foreign mothers now account for over half of all newborns, according to new official data.

The figures, published by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, confirm a trend that for years was dismissed as a conspiracy theory: the German people are on their way to becoming a minority in their homeland, thanks to the collapse in birth rates among German citizens, coupled with the steady increase in births among foreign women and mass immigration.

According to the latest official data, only 677,117 children were born in Germany last year, a 2% drop compared to the previous year. The figure alone is alarming, but it becomes even more so when broken down by the mother’s origin: women with German citizenship have a fertility rate of just 1.23 children per woman, the lowest in nearly three decades. Meanwhile, women with foreign citizenship maintain a rate of 1.84.

In the Netherlands, nearly half of young women regularly avoid areas in their own neighbourhoods they perceive as unsafe, reflecting a broader trend of heightened caution among women across all age groups.

Among women aged 15 to 25, 45% say they take detours to steer clear of risky places—more than twice the percentage of men in the same age group (21.5%). This pattern continues among women aged 25 to 65, with about one-third reporting similar behavior, while men in this age range remain around 19%.

The primary driver behind these precautions is fear of becoming a victim of crime. Women not only take steps to protect themselves on the street, but also at home. For instance, 70% of women over 65 say they avoid opening the door in the evening, a habit shared by 55 to 63% of younger women. In contrast, only about a third of men report the same level of caution.

People living alone—regardless of gender—tend to be more cautious than those living with a partner. Still, women consistently report greater concern for their safety across all age and household categories.

Protesters returned to a migrant hotel in Epping, England, on Thursday night, July 17th, for a second demonstration that escalated into violence. Eggs and fireworks were thrown at the hotel and police, and one person was arrested for affray. Much of the disorder occurred after the main protest ended, as people were dispersing.

Residents in the Essex town blocked roads and clashed with police in response to the continued housing of asylum seekers at the Bell Hotel—among them 38-year-old Ethiopian Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu. Kebatu, who crossed the Channel illegally on June 29th, 2025, was later charged with three sexual assaults and is due to stand trial next month at Colchester magistrates’ court. He is now in detention.

Remarkably, state broadcaster the BBC quoted its Essex political reporter Simon Dedman as estimating “there were about 40 pro-refugee protesters and about 400 members of far-right groups” at the scene. In fact, the counter-demonstrators were led by Stand Up To Racism, widely considered to be a front for the far-left Socialist Workers Party (of which its secretary, Weyman Bennett, has been a member). The BBC’s claim about “far-right group members” implies that few, if any, of the protesters were concerned local residents, despite widespread anger over the presence of Kebatu and others like him.

Local Conservative politicians—including district council leader Chris Whitbread and MPs Neil Hudson and Alex Burghart—have called for the Bell Hotel to stop housing asylum seekers. They also criticised the Home Office for what they described as poor judgment in placing migrants in Epping.

The ban, which came about after “French youths with a migration background” continuously caused problems at the pool and in pool bathrooms, including sexual harassment of young girls. The situation even sparked international headlines.

However, the Swiss paper 20 Minuten reported a surge in season ticket sales after the ban was put in place.

“It went very well. Citizens have rediscovered the bathing establishment with the peace and quiet that comes with it,“ said Lionel Maître, the municipal councilor for tourism and leisure in Porrentruy. “We have seen an increase in season ticket sales as citizens have finally regained the long-awaited sense of security. There have been no problems and no new bathing bans since then.”

Maître said that it had become increasingly noticeable that the perpetrators had Arabic names.
