ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
Something I did not cover in the show is the fate of the most popular president in human history, who has come down with Covid. This is interesting for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is that Biden used to angrily lecture us that only unvaccinated people could get Covid. It seems like a long time ago, but he was the leader of the “pandemic of the unvaccinated” chorus.
…
Putting that aside, you see the problem we have by the near total silence from the Republican party on this issue. They could be using this to hammer Biden, but they were onboard with the vaccine mandates too. The same is true of the conservatives, who forgot all about their principles during the panic. All of these people believe the same things, they just disagree over the presentation.

Professor Doctor Sucharit Bhakdi is a German virologist and professor of microbiology. He is an ethnic Thai who was born in the USA and educated at schools in Switzerland, Egypt, and Thailand. He studied medicine at the University of Bonn. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and, from 1991 to 2012, director of the Medical Institute for Microbiology and Hygiene in Germany.
Dr. Bhakdi was interviewed recently in Sweden by Swebbtv. His remarks concerned the Wuhan Coronavirus, and especially the experimental mRNA treatment that is intended to mitigate the effects of infection with the disease. He was vehement about the evils of the “vaccine”, and criticized the Swedes and the Danes for failing to stand up against the pressure to have themselves and their children “vaccinated”.

There’s a 2005 episode of Doctor Who in which David Tennant’s Doctor turns against Prime Minister Harriet Jones and undermines her with six words: “Don’t you think she looks tired?” Veiled as concern, it’s barely a criticism at all but it generates sufficient uncertainty about her health and leadership to inspire a vote of no confidence. Doubt is contagious. The tenor of the current grumbling about the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe reminds me of that. Not terrible, not failing, but don’t you think it looks tired?

When a Democrat occupies the White House, you can be reasonably sure that administrative agencies will start bending rules to get results that they can’t get through normal procedures.
Witness, for example, the rise of the agency “guidance” document. These are documents that express an agency’s view of what the law is. They are not, however, formal rules that have the force of law.
Still, any regulated entity would be foolish to ignore an agency guidance document because it knows the agency will enforce its new understanding of the law. The agency’s bureaucrats in charge of dishing out fines and other administrative penalties will treat the guidance as if it’s binding.
Think of guidance not as a command, but as an implied threat. Yes, it’s not technically a rule that you have to follow, but if you don’t go along willingly, we’ll break your kneecaps … bureaucratically.
A recent decision by U.S. District Judge Charles Atchley struck a blow against these shenanigans, and that’s a good thing.

Of course, their “reasoning” is that cases are once again increasing; 95,000 new cases are being reported daily, and hospitalizations are “beginning to increase again.” At this point, I frankly do not care about these results: COVID is going to COVID, and what in the world does it mean that hospitalizations are “beginning to increase”?

For weeks now, farmers in the Netherlands have been engaging in fierce protests over their government’s plan to halve the country’s nitrogen and ammonia pollution by 2030. It is estimated that this plan—which will mandate emissions cuts of 95% in some provinces—will require a 30% reduction in livestock and will drive many of the nation’s farmers out of business.
The protests have been remarkably heated, as tens of thousands take to the streets to block the country’s highways, torch bales of hay and spread manure around politicians’ homes. In one incident, Dutch police actually fired live rounds on one of the protesters as he attempted to breach the police line with his tractor.
Yes, the scenes coming out of the usually quiet Dutch countryside are shocking. But they should not be. They are just the early stages of a great worldwide battle that is shaping up between the free people of the world and the technocrats, who are starting to clamp down on them in the name of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Enslavement.

Current American popular culture eerily demands the same behavior of ordinary Americans as Havel’s hypothetical greengrocer. Whether you’re putting on a face mask before entering a grocery store or stringing up a pride flag for the month of June, Americans are signaling their conformity to the whims of the ruling class. Whether they’re actually an ally or think masks are effective is irrelevant. Like Havel’s greengrocer, all that matters is their desire to show that they’re team players. The only difference is that it is the retaliation of social media mobs rather than NKVD agents that citizens fear now.

The logic of the left accepts political violence. A few years ago, one of its acolytes tried to wipe out the congressional Republican caucus on a softball field; last month, another member of the MSNBCNN target demo tried to off Justice Kavanaugh for somewhat limiting the ability of progressives to conveniently kill babies. Even the reaction to the recent molestation of the famously beer-ophilic jurist as he nibbled on a rib-eye at Morton’s in DC was indicative – this personal confrontation was celebrated by the left instead of decried. What’s the logical limit when you sign onto the idea that one can legitimately influence politics via the personal intimidation of officials placed in office by our agreed constitutional procedures? If you can get in his face, why can’t you slap it? Or put a bullet in it? If there is a boundary, the left is not setting it.

We have been writing for a long time about the fact that transitioning from fossil fuels to wind and solar energy is catastrophically bad policy, not only because those forms of energy are intermittent and therefore inadequate, but also because China dominates the market for wind turbines and solar panels. Going “green” means turning over our economy–our lives–to the Chinese Communist Party.
This issue has been a dark secret if you rely on liberal news outlets for information, but now a glimmer of reality seems to be breaking through. I haven’t seen this reported domestically, but the Guardian has the story: “Breaking from China’s clean energy dominance ‘imperative’, US and Australia say after new climate tech deal.”

Since Covid, the NHS has struggled to return to normal. Whilst it is now seeing patients at a pre-pandemic level, the pressure is being described by senior figures as being at crisis level. If things are this bad in the summer months, the annual winter crisis — a national ritual not observed in many other first-world countries — will be much more serious still.
We should not let these acute crises obscure the fact that the Health Service systematically underperforms on key metrics: for example, it is below average internationally when it comes to preventing death from heart attacks, strokes, cancer and lung disease.
Despite this, it is fast becoming an unsupportable drain on the public finances. According to the King’s Fund, the NHS budget for England ran to £190.3 billion in 2021/22. Even before Covid, Health Service spending amounted to 7.2 per cent of GDP. By 2024, healthcare is projected to consume 44 per cent of day-to-day government spending, up from just 27 per cent in 2000.
All this despite the fact that more and more Britons are turning to the private healthcare market. Our out-of-pocket spending on medical bills is now almost on a par with America, an extraordinary failure considering that we have a high-tax, low-growth economy, with lower than average wages while forking out for universal provision.
The British NHS is the poster child for government-provided health care, and a potent reminder that the people on the left side of the IQ curve will cling to something that’s free even when it is demonstrably bad.
This is the future that the Obamacare Left want us to have.

Taxing cloud computing is not my idea. It’s billionaire Mark Cuban’s idea. I first learned about it during his interview on the Pomp Podcast, then again in another interview with POLITICO. It’s a potentially profound idea that’s worth a deeper exploration and thoughtful discussion.
There aren’t a whole lot of details around it. Cuban’s proposal is a “2% cloud tax”. The motivation, I believe, is to use the tax revenue to fund long-term economic recovery from COVID-19, as well as evening the playing field between the hyper-scale cloud computing platforms and other less technically sophisticated businesses, especially in AI. These cloud platforms are often called “digital landlords” and for good reasons. The tech giants who built these hyper-clouds have massive advantages in building AI products and services that will continue to displace workers, who rely on low or predictable skills in both blue and white-collar industries.
So how do we tax the cloud in a way that does even the playing field but does not discourage innovation? Assuming 2% is the right tax rate, how should the 2% be applied?
The world is full of people who think they ought to have the right to spend your money whether you like it or not. The tax system is their primary vehicle (organized crime is Number Two).

They’re outstanding at using YOUR money to buy the votes of simple-minded or venal people who are ready, willing, and able to support the Party of Free Stuff.
The only answer they have to any question is SPEND MONEY. (Not their money, other people’s money.) Their Golden Age was the Depression, in which Franklin Roosevelt took an ordinary regularly occurring economic downturn and stretched it out over a decade (in which he got to be President for twelve years, which would have been sixteen if he hadn’t died). The motto of the Democrats is, and always has been, “Tax and tax, spend and spend, elect and elect.” That’s the only thing they do well, and they do it well enough to make life miserable for the rest of us.

There are two major forces at work within the US economy today that pull in different directions but end up in the same place: These forces are price inflation caused by central bank stimulus along with supply chain instability and recession triggered by rising interest rates. Immense corporate and consumer debt also play a role, but this ties in directly with the interest rate issue.
In other words, we are looking at a classic stagflationary scenario amplified by years of fiat dollar printing by the Federal Reserve. The only element that has been missing is rising unemployment, until now.
The word “recession” is being used liberally lately and there is a good reason for this – It is vague and gives the public little to no idea of what to expect or how bad the economic downturn could get. It is also a convenient distraction from the much more dangerous issue of rising prices. If a “recession” is on the way, won’t this mean prices will fall? Not necessarily, at least not anytime soon.
I guess “Learn to code!” is going to start ringing pretty hollow.

In a dangerous game of wack-a-mole, Mexico nearly eliminated rampant gasoline pipeline thefts only to now see cartels and common thieves stealing $1 billion worth of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) each year from state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex.
Under Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, theft from gasoline and diesel pipelines plummeted 94% after he deployed the National Guard and military surveillance to watch over the supply arteries. The glow of that success has been dulled, however, as criminals have switched to tapping the country’s 1,000 miles of LPG pipelines.
Pemex found more than 2,400 illegal taps last year—up more than 10-fold in just three years. LPG is Mexico’s top source of energy for heating homes and is also used in cooking. The thieves sell directly to homeowners and food merchants, often using trucks disguised to look like legitimate delivery vehicles.

ZMan says the quiet part out loud.
A recent Gallup survey reports that confidence in institutions has fallen to an all time low among Americans. The only institutions trusted by a majority of people are small business, the military and the police. The last two are dropping quickly, which makes sense given the behavior of these institutions. A military full of drag queens and a police force siding with barbarians does not inspire confidence. Faith in small business simply reflects the fact that people continue to trust good people.
The normal reaction from the usual suspects is to blame their favorite bogeymen for the collapse in social trust. They will not use the term “social trust” as that risks entering a forbidden zone, but that is the topic. Trust in institutions is a proxy for social trust, how much people trust the people they do not know in their community. A big driver of the collapse in social trust is a generation of open borders. When your neighborhood is full of strange aliens, it is hard to trust anything or anyone.
As is often the case, the flood of aliens into your neighborhood is a symptom of a much bigger problem that lies at the heart of it. The people in charge simply cannot stop lying, which reflects on the institutions they control. The obvious example is the news media, which is approaching single digits in the Gallup poll. The fact that anyone trusts the media is an argument against universal suffrage. Many people, at least ten percent based on the survey, are too stupid to vote.

The Left has a rather schizophrenic attitude toward protests and demonstrations. Some are wonderful, like the George Floyd riots, which were not, in fact, protests at all. Or like arson and other destruction committed at pro-life facilities. Others are detestable, like the Dutch farmers’ protests, or the French “yellow vests,” or the Canadian truckers. Some protests, too, can only be ignored, like when hundreds of thousands of pro-life citizens show up for their annual march in Washington.
Currently the Left is “demonstrating” against the Supreme Court justices who concurred in the Dobbs decision. A few nights ago, as Scott has noted, left-wingers harassed Justice Brett Kavanaugh and other diners at the Morton’s steak house in D.C. Liberals viewed this effort as a triumph–Kavanaugh reportedly had to exit out a back door–and a pro-Democratic Party organization is now offering cash bounties to anyone who sees a conservative justice out in public in time for a flash mob to assemble.
When asked about such tactics, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was nonplussed. These are peaceful demonstrations, she replied, the very essence of democracy!

The woke film Lightyear opened to a dismal $51 million, which was way below expectations. According to The-Numbers, the film was never able to reach commercial success as it dropped 64% during its second week and then another 64% during its third week.
Compared that to Minions: The Rise Of Gru: The non-woke children’s movie matched Lightyear’s entire domestic run during opening weekend to $107 million. ZMan watches the dumpster fire.
In many ways, Johnson is like Donald Trump in that he represented the unhappiness of the Tory voters, even though he never really sympathized with them. Trump rode popular discontent into the White House but was obsessed with gaining elite approval. Johnson rode a populist wave into power, but never seemed to understand any of it.
There are, of course, lots of different opinions on the two men, but the one thing everyone agrees upon is the best people hated them. The reason the best people hated them is they appeared to side with the rabble against their betters, which is the one unforgivable sin in this age. Just about any degenerate act can be forgiven, but if you go against the family, you will never be forgiven. Like Trump, Johnson never seemed to understand this for some reason.
…
Another parallel to Trump is that the British ruling elite now faces the same trouble as the American elite in that a replacement is not obvious. In 2020 the selectors in Washington settled on a bumbling old simpleton because the other options were terrifyingly incompetent. No matter how angry you may be at the orange dirt monster, the thought of Elizabeth Warren in charge is a bridge too far. Bernie Sanders was literally their next best option.

Ann Coulter has some fun.
The Second Amendment does not refer to “muskets”; it refers to “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” “Bear” means to carry, so any handheld firearm carried by the military can be carried by the people. Just as the musket was once carried by our military, the AR-15 is a handheld arm (technically, the less powerful version of the automatic M-16) carried by our military today. As soon as the U.S. military goes back to muskets, then muskets it is!
But I’m not here to refute idiotic arguments. These guys may as well claim that the First Amendment protects only speech delivered in pamphlets and sermons, but nothing communicated on television, the internet, or with poster boards and Magic Markers.
The Second Amendment is nearly the only prescriptive policy in a document that liberals have been trying to pump their nutty ideas into for 50 years. Unfortunately for them, there’s nothing in the Constitution about a right to dance naked in strip clubs, contraception, marriage or sticking a fork in a baby’s head.
