NY Woman’s Extreme Response To Date’s Burger Concern Backfires Massively

13th March 2023

New York Post.

A woman who walked out on her date after he refused to pay $3.00 for a slice of cheese on his burger is copping criticism for the “insane” reason why she abandoned him in a restaurant.

New York woman Dafna was on a date having dinner with a man she’d met on dating app Hinge and things were going well – until he said no to having cheese on his burger after the waitress told him it came at an additional cost.

His refusal to part ways with an extra few dollars proved too much for Dafna who, after eating, said she was going to use the bathroom but actually went and paid the bill.

She then left the restaurant without saying goodbye, opting to instead send him a message that read: “The check is taken care of. You should have gotten the cheese.”

While walking home, Dafna took to TikTok to rant about the encounter, explaining the entire bill was just $55.00.

I wouldn’t pay $3.00 for a slice of cheese either, even in New York. Most women of my acquaintance would appreciate a guy so careful with his money (note that it was his burger, not hers.) This guy just dodged a major bullet.

The Cost of Being Poor: Why It Costs So Much to Be Poor in America

12th March 2023

Read it.

It’s expensive to be poor. When you don’t have money, you’re often forced to make decisions that seem necessary in the short term. Those decisions often add to your long-term burden, adding to the high cost of being poor. That can lead to a cycle of poverty that’s difficult to break.

Nobody wants to be poor. Nobody wants to live with expenses that exceed income or to struggle to make it from paycheck to paycheck. The reality of being poor is that it imposes conditions that perpetuate poverty.

Conceding that this is true, so what? The Poor in America have access to sufficient public assistance that they can lead quite comfortable lives–if they want to. A large part of the ‘costs’ of being poor reflect sub-optimal personal choices, such as wasting money on recreational drugs like tobacco, alcohol, and controlled substances. Poor people tend to have character defects such as short time horizons and poor impulse control, which is why just giving them Free Stuff doesn’t ever solve the problem, as witness the Homeless Crisis that exists in its worst forms in precisely the places that bend every effort to alleviate their distress. No homeless person ever turned down a smoke, or a drink, or a hit: There’s the difficulty in a nutshell.

We’re Drowning in Old Books. But Getting Rid of Them Is Heartbreaking.

12th March 2023

Washington Post.

On a recent weekday afternoon, Bruce Albright arrives in the Wonder Book parking lot, pops the trunk of his Camry and unloads two boxes of well-worn books. “It’s sad. Some of these I’ve read numerous times,” he says.

Albright, 70, has been at this for six months, shedding 750 books at his local library and at this Frederick, Md., store. The rub: More than 1,700 volumes remain shelved in the retired government lawyer’s nearby home, his collection lovingly amassed over a half-century.

Piker. My wife and I have over 4,000 books, down from the 6,000 we had when we got married and consolidated our collections. “We can’t ever get divorced,” she said, “It would be impossible to sort out whose books are whose.”

This, of course, doesn’t include the thousands of books we have on Kindle, nor the thousands of books I have scanned into PDFs over the course of the last twenty years.

If we have books we no longer “need”, we donate them to our local public library. They have periodic sales of such donated  books; the library gets additional funding, and the books are priced low enough that people who don’t have the money to spring for a Kindle or tablet get something they can afford to read (and perhaps treasure).

What goes around comes around.

Leave Them Kids Alone

12th March 2023

Read it.

A teacher testified before the Arizona state Senate education committee earlier this month and claimed that she and her colleagues knew better than parents what books belonged on school library shelves. “I have a master’s degree,” she said. “What do the parents have?” In the video, now widely circulated on Twitter, she continued, “The purpose of public education is not to teach only what parents want [students] to be taught. It is to teach them what society needs them to be taught.”

Back when I was a kid and teachers reflected the values of the parents,  that might have been true. Since the education industry has been taken over by radical progressive unions and various species of Wokerati, it is manifestly untrue.

The Daylight Saving Time Mess Just Won’t Go Away

11th March 2023

Wired.

“Globally, the debate is fixed—there are more countries not changing the clocks,” says Ariadna Güell Sans, co-coordinator of the Barcelona Time Use Initiative for a Healthy Society, an organization focused on time-related policy. Research has shown how moving the clocks forward and back, even by just one hour, negatively affects the economy, road safety, and health. Still, the US, Europe, and a few other nations are finding it hard to break the habit. The issue, says Güell Sans, is whether we stay on standard time or daylight saving time forever.

One of the plainest of indicators that our political systems are dysfunctional is the fact that it is apparently impossible to change a situation that evidently everybody agrees needs to be changed.

The Cult of the Elite

9th March 2023

ZMan.

We have a couple of recent examples that are useful in understanding what truly matters to the elites. First is this case involving a couple of fringe goofballs using robocalls to mock black people. Americans receive billions of bogus calls, despite it being illegal, but these two warranted special attention. The judge makes clear that if they had mocked Irish people, for example, it would have been fine. They targeted black people and no one is allowed to mock the gods.

We have this case of four black people who drove to Mexico so one of them could get cosmetic surgery, but they got carjacked instead. Sadly, thousands of Americans are attacked by Mexicans around the border ever year. Of course, tens of millions of people from around the world stream over the border. This not only damages the lives Americans near the border, but it has ruined life around the country. This is cheered by the political class as the browning of America.

This case is different. You see, the four people involved are black and no one is allowed to lay a hand on our sacred black people. Lady Bugs Graham is now demanding we go on jihad against Mexico as retribution. Official Washington is suddenly ablaze with angry rhetoric about what is happening south of the border. Mexicans kill white people every day in America, but when they killed a couple of black people, they crossed a line in elite moral code that must be addressed.

Trouble With Erythritol

8th March 2023

Read it.

I wrote a few months ago about a surprising finding with some food sweeteners. Sucralose and saccharin (but not aspartame or stevia) seemed to bring on impaired glucose tolerance, which is not something that you would have expected from molecules with none of sugar’s metabolic and nutritional effects. That was certainly worth thinking about, but now there are more disturbing results to add to it.

This new paper reports that another widely used non-nutritional sweetener (erythritol) appears to be associated with cardiovascular problems. That’s quite a surprise, because erythritol itself has been considered very safe indeed. It’s been used for decades as a sweetener, and is approved for that use in over sixty countries. To the tongue, it’s about 60% as sweet as sucrose (table sugar), which makes it easier to substitute than some of the far-sweeter alternatives, which then need to be bulked up to keep recipes from being thrown off (and those fillers themselves often cause the recipes to be adjusted). But it has basically no caloric value for the human diet.

Yet another study that attempts to pretend that correlation implies causation. The key term here is ‘predictor’.

Former ICE Chief Explains Why Women Illegally Crossing Border Carry These Pills

Many young women and girls cross the southern border carrying “morning after” pills, also known as Plan B, because “they know they’re going to be raped,” Tom Homan says.

Homan says he has “talked to young girls, as young as 10, that were raped multiple times” by members of criminal cartels.

The strange case of Britain’s demise

7th March 2023

The Economist.

A country that likes to think of itself as a model of phlegmatic common sense and good-humoured stability has become an international laughing stock: three prime ministers in as many months, four chancellors of the exchequer and a carousel of resigning ministers, some of them repeat offenders. “The programme of the Conservative Party,” declared Benjamin Disraeli in 1872, “is to maintain the constitution of the country.” The latest bunch of party leaders have broken their own laws, sidelined official watchdogs, disrespected Parliament and dishonoured treaties.

Why Hasn’t Technology Disrupted Higher Education Already?

6th March 2023

Read it.

This is a somewhat rickety pile of in-principle-separate ideas that really does seem vulnerable to technological disruption. On its face, the relevant disruptive technology should have been the printing press, and the disruption should have happened three or four hundred years ago. But not only did the basic structure of the university persist, but most of the world’s leading universities are also much newer than the printing press. Harvard and Yale are really old by the standards of American institutions, but they’re not older than printing — and many other prestigious American universities date from the second half of the nineteenth century. By the time Stanford and the University of Texas were founded, it was already extremely clear that people could study books at home (or in libraries) and then take exams administered by certifying bodies that had nothing to do with teaching or research.

Academic Arrogance: The School That Grants Your PhD Thinks It’s Too Good to Hire You

The pattern is clear: If your PhD doesn’t come from one of the very top schools, the odds that you will be hired to the faculty at any university become small. The bottom 308 (79.5%) of the universities produce merely 20% of all professors. If your PhD is from a department outside of the top 20%, you can practically kiss your faculty dreams goodbye.

Beyond Davos

2nd March 2023

Joel Kotkin.

The populist conspiracy theorists mistake showmanship for reality. Cambridge legal professor Antara Haldar notes that Davos is not really a place where important decisions are taken. It represents a symbolic “avatar” for the elites. If the Davos crowd has demonstrated anything, it is the futility of their posturing. They lack the ability to influence the leaders of countries like India and China, much less places like Iran, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. Some of the leaders of these countries may speak and consort with the Davos crowd, but they clearly do not listen to them. Nor do the West’s middle classes, who are proving reluctant to embrace an environmental agenda that threatens immiseration.

15 Days to Flatten the Truth

2nd March 2023

Ann Coulter.

It made news this week when The Lancet, a once-respected medical journal, finally admitted that there’s such a thing as “natural immunity” with COVID. (Is it too much to hope that, in another three years, The Lancet will cease referring to women as “bodies with vaginas”?)

Several months into “15 days to flatten the curve,” actual experts, like the Great Barrington Declaration scientists, began screaming from the rooftops about natural immunity. They argued — correctly, as it turns out — that we should protect the vulnerable while allowing those not at risk to go about their lives, get COVID and acquire immunity.

Millions upon millions of wrecked lives later (including 170,000 excess non-COVID deaths), the people who lied to us for their own selfish motives — getting on TV, high ratings for their panic porn, the joys of bossing other people around — are quietly admitting the truth.

Horns of a Dilemma

1st March 2023

Read it.

Apparently, the four happy hornographers in this case studied a huge heap of historical photos and etchings in the repository of images maintained by the Netherlands-based Rhino Research Centre to reach their conclusion. Clearly, “Come up and look at my horn etchings” is a fruitful academic enterprise, and I am sure that their contribution will be enthusiastically accepted, particularly when this kind of academic ambrosia is also the colour of the paint on that mythic bandwagon called trophy hunting. It is a rather sad reality that researchers need to attract necessary funds to survive, ipso facto only research proposals containing the popular words “extinction”, “climate”, “global warming” or “trophy hunting” get to feed from the funding’s life-giving trough these days.

Like tenure, funding doesn’t grow on trees.

Permission-Slip Culture Is Hurting America

The Atlantic.

In louisiana, it takes $1,485 and roughly 2,190 days to become an interior designer. In Washington, it takes $319 and 373 days to become a cosmetologist. The District of Columbia requires $740 to become an auctioneer, and a college degree to watch children for someone else. (Having and watching your own children continues to be an unlicensed affair.) In Kansas, you have to cough up $200 to work as a funeral attendant. And Maine requires $235 and 1,095 days to become a travel guide. Want to move states? That could mean you have to relicense, as if, say, cutting hair is materially different in Massachusetts than it is in New York.

Meetings *Are* the Work

25th February 2023

Read it.

The challenge of judging isn’t specific to the bluff-and-misdirect world of poker; “true enough to act on” is shaky even in the places where we expect it to be solid. For example, the science we’re taught in school has shared standards for validity; concepts like statistical significance and confidence intervals are complicated, but in a reassuringly mathy way.
As you keep going with science, though, you find that “truth” is very much not a solid concept. The ongoing (and frankly terrifying) replication crisis in psychology, medicine, and social sciences highlights just how shaky the foundations are. This challenge is multiplied for cross-disciplinary studies, which wrestle with whole different ways of deciding what is true enough to act on from the incompatible ways of knowing.

The trouble with most of what passes for ‘science’ these days, is that it isn’t.

A fundamental principle of Real Science is that correlation does not imply causation. Things that happen together are not connected just because they happen together a lot, not even if the happen together all the time; you must actually be able to identify the chain of events in order to call it causation.

Thus we see that a lot of modern ‘science’ is just correlation being considered to indicate causation just because things happen together a lot–which is like flipping a coin 100 times, getting 80 heads, and claiming that your odds of getting heads while flipping a coin is therefore 80%. Yes, correlation is important; there is no causation without correlation. But correlation by itself is not enough, no matter how strong.

Correspondingly, studies based on statistics are just opinion, not science. There may be a causal chain there; the more things happen together, the stronger the prospect that they are causally connected; but until the actual causal links can be identified, it remains opinion, not science.

I may have to write a book on this, once I can use both hands again….

First, Do Some Harm

24th February 2023

Read it.

Redpills come in a wide variety of grades and dosages. As far as health and nutrition is concerned, a classic “gateway” redpill is hospital food. If you’ve ever had the misfortune to be laid up in the hospital, or to visit a friend or loved one there, you probably won’t need to be told how terrible the food is. I remember vividly, back when I was perhaps a little less health-conscious than I am now, visiting my grandfather after he had a stroke. A nurse appeared and dumped a scuffed plastic tray on my grandfather’s lap. This, apparently, was lunch. Item one: a plate of three different kinds of watery mush, which pooled separately and refused to mix, as if somehow they were chemically incompatible with one another. Item two: a small cup of the thinnest squash I’d ever seen. Item three: a token, rather sad-looking, banana, exiled to the outer rim of the tray. And that was it. How, I asked myself, would any of this help an 81-year-old man to rally from a devastating stroke that had left him immobile and incontinent? The situation was only made worse, for me at least, by the fact that I had to try and feed my grandfather this dreck myself.

Liberalism’s Pathological Aversion to Suffering

19th February 2023

Read it.

Recently, I attended a brilliant address in Cambridge by the remarkably insightful quasi-prophetess, Mary Harrington. She spoke about the age of social media and presented the degree to which, in her view, we are not so much on the verge of a transhumanist world, but already living in one. She pointed to the contraceptive pill as the first great transhumanist innovation, which, as she put it, “moved us into a completely new paradigm in regard to what medicine and healthcare actually are.” Harrington began as a feminist thinker, and today calls herself a “reactionary feminist,” which is fast becoming a title for several public intellectuals who are developing certain feminist criticisms into a full-scale assault on late modernity. The contraceptive pill, Harrington argued, changed healthcare as a discipline exclusively organised to remedy failing bodies to include the altering of well and properly functioning bodies as if they were problems to be solved. Whilst contraception per se frustrates the procreative act, the pill is unique in doing this by modifying what would otherwise be the natural functioning of the body. She claimed that this moved us into the transhumanist epoch, in which we are now far more entrenched than we realise.

UK Officials Predict Thousands More Migrants Will Make Illegal Channel Crossings This Year

8th February 2023

Read it.

The number of migrants entering Britain via the Channel will increase by more than a third this year, according to UK officials, despite the Conservative Party government promising to clamp down on illegal crossings.

A record 45,756 migrants came to the UK in small boats last year, up from 28,526 in 2021 and 8,466 in 2020. The figure has risen year-on-year since at least 2018 when just 299 migrants made the dangerous crossing. The Tory manifesto of 2019—and others both before and after it—promised to “fix our immigration system.” Conservative officials have also spent much time and filled a great deal of column space announcing “radical” plans to tackle the issue. But officials believe 65,000 migrants will risk the journey this year.

The only way to ‘fix’ this situation is to SEND THEM BACK. The reason they are so eager to come is that they know that they WILL NOT BE SENT BACK. If someone is caught stealing but is allowed to keep what he stole, HE WILL CONTINUE TO STEAL.

As with misinformation, labeling someone who disagrees with the current standardthink as a “denier” has become, pardon the term, endemic amongst the woke.

Covid denier, climate denier, election denier, science denier – are all bandied about to immediately end debate, tar any difference of opinion as literally insane, and depict anyone who ever disagrees with you as stupid and evil.

This epithet is now even being used pre-emptively to makes sure that no matter what anyone who now or ever questions the move to ban gas stoves will not be doing so based on facts or logic but because of their “gas stove denialism.”

I suspect that there would be a great market for t-shirts that just said DENIER. I’d buy one.

End the COVID-19 ‘Emergency’ — Now

7th February 2023

Read it.

We now know, of course, that lockdowns had a minimal impact as a public health measure. But they capsized the best economy (in an election year) in 40 years. Just in time to get President Joe Biden elected. How convenient.

The Philanthropy Threat

7th February 2023

Read it.

The predilections of the ultra-rich will likely loom over politics and policy debates for decades to come. In the U.S., nonprofits’ assets have grown nine-fold since 1980. In 2020, nonprofits brought in $2.62 trillion in revenues, constituting more than 5.6% of the U.S. economy. And this process is just beginning, as the boomers begin to leave behind their riches. The consulting firm Accenture projects that the Silent Generation and baby boomers will gift their heirs up to $30 trillion by 2030, and up to $75 trillion by 2060.

Yet this bounty will be highly limited due to the rapid concentration of assets in ever fewer hands, with the top 1% in the U.S. increasing their share by roughly 50% since 2002. The class implications of this process are profound. The winners clearly will be the small pool of big inheritors, as we already see in Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott; Bill Gates’ now-discarded wife, Melinda French Gates; and Laurene Powell Jobs, the left-leaning publisher of The Atlantic and the widow of Apple’s founder.

Annals of Government Medicine

7th February 2023

Read it.

Britain’s National Health Service is a product of the socialist wave that overtook the U.K. following World War II. It has long been held up as an exemplar by those who seek to impose socialized medicine in other countries, like ours. But today, the state of the NHS is dire. The Wall Street Journal headlines: “The U.K.’s Government-Run Healthcare Service Is in Crisis.”

Eventually you run out of other people’s money.

The Great Sort Continues

5th February 2023

Read it.

Americans are sorting themselves into red and blue states. To be fair, though, the sort is mostly a one-way street: millions are leaving failing blue states and flocking to Florida, Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, South Dakota, etc.

As this realignment of population continues, states seem to be doubling down. California and New York edge farther to the left, while in Minnesota, my state, Democrats are proposing to increase personal income taxes to the second highest rate in the nation, thus driving the state further into irrelevance. But that is a minority trend.
