When I was an undergraduate, there was a joke common among the graduate students who ate at Silliman to the effect that a political scientist was a historian who didn’t want to do the work, and a sociologist was a political scientist who didn’t want to do the work.
Nothing I’ve seen from that day to this has undercut the applicability of that formulation.

E. J. Dionne, liberal opinionator extraordinaire, is discovering that all of the the Democrat Party candidates are shitty. That’s because the truth is finally coming out about the Identity Politics that has sustained them for the last forty years.
Dionne’s answer?
This is obviously a problem for Hillary Clinton herself, but it is also very bad for a Democratic Party that cannot afford to see the entire Clinton legacy discredited.
Say NA NA NA NA NA very loudly and hope it goes away, I guess.

Steve Sailer is shocked, shocked I tell you, that there are flaming hypocrites in L.A.
As far as I can tell, environmentalism in LA is mostly about shopping, buying stuff white people like to flaunt your social conscience and income, about showing the world that you’re living life in the fast lane.
And that about sums it up.

Read it. Read it twice.
Democrats in general, I would submit, confuse change with improvement. They fail to weigh the costs and benefits of change, to consider its unintended consequences, or to worry about what we need to conserve and how we might go about doing that faithfully. They ask Americans to embrace change for its own sake, in the faith that history is governed by a law of progress, which guarantees that change is almost always an improvement. The ability to bring about historical change, then, becomes the highest mark of the liberal leader.
And those are the truest words you’ll read today.

Of course, the Usual Suspects will characterize this as a Republican plot.
As if there were any Republicans employed by the State Department. Let’s get back to reality, shall we?
(Now, if the suggestion is that a couple of Democrats in the State Department are sufficiently venal to sell information to their ideological enemies, well, that I’d believe.)
What I don’t believe is that, say, the McCain campaign, which has planted both boots on a fellow for just sending around a link to a YouTube video mocking Obama’s link to racist preacher Wright, would be involved at all. And nobody else cares.

The problem with many liberals is that while they say they espouse tolerance, love for your fellow man, and discussing problems instead of resorting to fisticuffs, when they’re actually expected to “walk the walk,” things get ugly. To them, just listening to conservative ideas is akin to Dracula finding out about a nationwide tainted blood supply. It’s painful when liberals realize that not everyone thinks the way that they do: that there are unenlightened souls out there who don’t recycle, who go to church once in a while, who respect our military, and who don’t think that the sun shines out of Barack Obama’s nether regions.

Not to be confused with “boomer socialism”, which is a different gig that doesn’t pay as well.
Local governments have been so eager to engage in this “race to the bottom” of offering special breaks and subsidies to corporations who just might come to their community if the pot is sweetened enough that one might be forgiven for thinking it an immemorial custom. It ain’t.
Just once I’d like to see local voters say to, oh, a sports team, “Pay for your own goddam luxury-box-choked stadium”. Just once. Not a lot to ask.
