The Dutch government could be forced to pay more than €100 million in compensation to asylum seekers after a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), sharply reducing member states’ freedom to manage migration pressures on their own terms.
The ruling, issued on May 8th in the Zimir case, drastically narrows the conditions on which governments can delay asylum decisions, leaving the Dutch government legally exposed—and politically cornered. While public services are overwhelmed, Brussels punishes an EU member state for not giving absolute priority to people who are not even European citizens.
The decision directly affects around 18,000 asylum seekers who have been waiting between six and fifteen months for a resolution, far exceeding the six-month deadline established by EU law. If each of them claims the maximum compensation—€7,500—the total could easily surpass €100 million. This comes on top of nearly €37 million already paid out in similar penalties last year. Brussels shows little concern for the strain on Dutch public services—its main concern, it seems, is protecting the procedural rights of foreigners.
The ECJ made it clear that only a sudden and large-scale crisis—such as an armed conflict or an unforeseen influx—justifies extending the time limits. Gradual increases in asylum claims or a lack of staff are not acceptable reasons.

Over the past nine months, “rogue communication devices” not listed in product documents were found in solar power inverters and batteries from several Chinese suppliers, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke with Reuters. The undocumented devices were found after U.S. experts disassembled the renewable energy equipment to check for security issues, prompting officials to review the potential dangers of the Chinese-made devices, according to the publication.

The American Mind.
A recent report in the New York Times revealed that the pilot of the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter that knocked American Airlines flight 5342 from the sky in January made several errors. The pilot ignored a warning to change direction and collided with the plane, killing everyone on both aircraft. This information was not released by the U.S. Army nor the Department of Defense, even though the official policy of both is maximum disclosure, minimum delay. But in this and countless other cases, the military’s actions are hostile to official DoD policies.
The Army took unprecedented actions to delay releasing the pilot’s identity, as all traces of her online persona were wiped from the web. Once the public learned that former Biden White House aide U.S. Army Capt. Rebecca Lobach piloted the helicopter on that tragic night, they had virtually nothing to use to evaluate her. We were assured she was a stellar soldier, but we have heard nothing from those who served alongside her.
Was Lobach allowed multiple retry attempts for repeatedly failing required check rides? Was her entire unit threatened not to speak with the press? We don’t know. But I do know from 20 years of experience as a military public affairs officer that there is ample precedent for commanders breaking regulations by ordering troops not to talk with the media. This often happens when there is a chance that the truth would be embarrassing to the military, or when a senior officer lied and the force feels it’s better to perpetuate that lie than to come clean.

You know a political campaign is struggling to be heard when it resorts to shock tactics you wouldn’t want your kids to see in order to gain publicity. There’s a lot of such desperation going about, from the doom-mongering antics of Chris Packham covered in these pages here, to the promotion of transgender ideology using drag artists in primary schools, for the simple reason that campaigns generating outrage quickly polarise opinion and create a niche market of followers from which campaigners then build upon.
One of the most pernicious of such campaigns is militant veganism that masquerades as promoting animal welfare. Yet People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) – the epitome of this business model (for when you follow the money, that is what it is) – passes for a respectable organisation looking to save animals from human mistreatment, when it is anything but.
One only needs to look at the behaviour of its co-founder, Ingrid Newkirk (caged in main photo), to understand the real motives of PETA campaigns are regularly less about animal welfare and more about advancing a radical, anti-human ideology by espousing views that are not only controversial but, at times, dangerously extreme.

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a subpoena to Los Angeles County for records tied to a state-run assistance program, which the department alleges might have been used to unlawfully provide federal benefits to illegal immigrants.
Homeland Security Investigations served a Title 8 subpoena to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, which administers California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants.
While the cash assistance program is a state-funded initiative, the federal subpoena seeks records from January 2021 to the present to determine whether any recipients received Supplemental Security Income benefits but who were ineligible, based on their immigration status.

The credentials committee of the Democratic National Committee voted on Monday to void the results of the internal party vote that made David Hogg a party vice chair, ruling that the election had not followed proper parliamentary procedures.
The decision — which came after roughly three hours of internal debate and one tie vote — will put the issue before the full body of the Democratic National Committee. It must decide whether to force Mr. Hogg and a second vice chair, Malcolm Kenyatta, to run again in another election later this year.
Mr. Hogg, 25, an outspoken survivor of the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., has prompted a fierce backlash over his plans to spend up to $20 million through another organization he heads, Leaders We Deserve, on primary campaigns against incumbent Democrats. Ken Martin, the party chairman, has said it is inappropriate for Mr. Hogg to meddle in primaries while serving as a party official, and has recommended changing the party’s bylaws to force him to sign a neutrality pledge.

Secure borders and stationary populations were considered the mark of emerging civilization by classical historians. In contrast to nomadism and constant strife over disputed territory, peoples who had clearly defined and protected borders ascended to statehood, maintained a distinct culture, and achieved greater prosperity and security.
In contrast, what we suffered from 2021 to 2025 was unprecedented. It was an intentional administration effort to de-civilize the nation by destroying its borders—as if to return to the premodern era, when there were no clearly defined or secure borders, and nomadic peoples migrated as they pleased.
Stranger still, illegal aliens were at times given precedence over citizens—as immigration law was simply discarded.
Without IDs, illegal aliens boarded U.S. flights, while the government ordered citizens to obtain more secure “real” IDs.
Some 8,500 veteran soldiers were drummed out of the military for refusing the experimental mRNA vaccinations. Yet 10 million simply walked across the southern border into America, without a care from the Biden administration whether they were vaccinated, ill, or had criminal records.

The outlines are clear. Biden and his corrupt cronies left the U.S. southern border wide open for four years. Estimates vary but it’s likely 8 million illegal aliens crossed the border. But the actual number could be 10 million or higher. Of course, some just came for a better opportunity, but many were murderers, terrorists, rapists, sex traffickers, Chinese spies and every sort of violent low life you can imagine.
It’s nearly impossible to find and deport 8 million people. Biden made sure of that by ignoring the procedures for tracking and documenting the alien invasion. Trump’s policy of “remain in Mexico” while immigration cases were pending was abandoned by Biden. Many of the illegals got court dates, but those were scheduled years in advance. The expectation was that the court notices would be thrown in the trash, the illegals would not show up in court, and no enforcement action would be conducted.
Trump has launched a major deportation effort despite these handicaps. In any situation where you can accomplish part of the task but not all, the first move is to prioritize elements so you can devote resources to the best effect. Trump has done that also. He has prioritized the worst of the worst – criminals and terrorists – for early deportation. That reduces crime and violence in the U.S. and gives Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a chance to hone their techniques for the larger task ahead.

American investors are unwittingly funding Chinese Communist Party activities through Wall Street loopholes, according to a securities expert who recently testified before Congress.
Chris Iacovella, CEO of the American Securities Association, told The Daily Signal these activities include “the internment of Uyghurs, funding [People’s Liberation Army] weapons systems, a cyber army that relentlessly attacks this country, our businesses, and our people, as well as numerous other atrocities from a human rights perspective, including genocide.”
Iacovella testified in April at a joint House-Senate hearing on the CCP about loopholes that allow Chinese companies to access U.S. capital markets despite a Chinese prohibition on foreign ownership.

At least 9 of the 81 people, or 11 percent, arrested in connection with storming a Columbia University library Wednesday use “they/them” pronouns, a review of public records by the Washington Free Beacon shows. That share is well above the 1.6 percent of Americans who identify as transgender or nonbinary, according to the Pew Research Center, and more than double the 5 percent of people who identify as transgender or nonbinary under 30.
The brood of agitators run the gamut from longtime professional protesters, to otherwise carefree writers and poets. Most have long histories steeped in transgender activism. The group was part of a mob that raided and vandalized Butler Library, handed out pro-Hamas pamphlets, and injured two security officials. They were offered a chance to leave peacefully if they showed their identification, but the radicals refused and were arrested after a standoff.
The disproportionate numbers come amid growing awareness of transgender-inspired violence which has in recent years included shootings in Covenant School in Tennessee, STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting in Colorado, and a 2018 mass shooting in Aberdeen, Maryland, which left four dead. Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, also famously suffered from gender dysphoria, and once attempted a sex change.

Dealerships have been torched, vehicles vandalized, and owners accosted in parking lots by sanctimonious citizens, sneering moral condemnation.
It is not necessary to be a shareholder, Tesla owner, or admirer of Elon Musk to find this troubling. The issue transcends personalities or partisanship.
It is a symptom of a civic pathology, one where ideological grievance takes precedence over shared achievement, and where economic success is no longer a cause for celebration but a litmus test of political allegiance.
If Mr. Musk espouses views one finds disagreeable, there are democratic mechanisms to contest them.
But to vilify an entire enterprise—its workers, consumers, products—based on its founder’s political eccentricities is intellectual laziness masquerading as moral conviction.
It also prompts a deeper question, leading us to the heart of the matter: which corporations, if any, are so morally unblemished that we can consume their products without public disapproval? In an age increasingly saturated with virtue signalling and performative ethics, should we now consider our consumer choices as moral declarations?
If so, the standard quickly becomes untenable.

Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell looks set to keep her job after dismissing Britain’s overwhelmingly Pakistani-heritage rape gangs as a ‘dog whistle’ issue being used to create division in British society.
Powell’s place in the cabinet looks safe, for now, and rising Labour star, health secretary Wes Streeting, took to the news studios on Sunday, May 4th, saying the right honourable member’s apology is sincere and, basically, ‘we’ve all made mistakes.’
To err is human, but the actions of these gangs are inhuman. One notorious case can be seen in a court transcript from 2013, in which the judge presiding read out the specific harms inflicted on the same girl by her controlling ‘groomer’ (so-called when an adult male initially approaches a 12-year-old with a view to becoming her ‘boyfriend’).

Between 2022 and 2024, the U.S. saw a record 43% rise in “sheltered homelessness”—staying in some sort of emergency shelter, as opposed to living on the street. That is shocking enough on its own, but according to a new study, a contemporaneous spike in asylum seekers accounted for a stunning 60% of that increase.
“Asylum seekers”—as referenced in the study—are all recent immigrants seeking residence in the U.S., regardless of their legal status.
Unsheltered homelessness has been on the rise since 2015, but sheltered homelessness had declined by 12% from 2007 to 2022 before its sudden 43% spike between 2022 and 2024.

Columbia University medical students accused the Ivy League school of pushing a double standard after a classmate who was suspended following her arrest for storming a Barnard College building returned to campus. The student, Gabrielle Wimer, appears to be on course to graduate later this month.
Wimer was one of the four anti-Israel Columbia students arrested for storming Barnard’s Milstein Library in March. The Ivy League university promptly suspended the quartet and restricted them from campus, though officials didn’t say how long the punishments would last. “Any violations of our rules, policies, and of the law must have consequences,” a Columbia spokeswoman told the Washington Free Beacon at the time.
But several sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Free Beacon they’ve seen Wimer attending “Ready 4 Residency Course,” a month-long required class Columbia medical students must pass in March or April of their final year in order to graduate. Others confirmed that they’ve seen her on campus or entering the room where the class is held.
Those witnesses offered sharp criticism of Columbia. One accused the university of “a troubling double standard.”

The civil rights division of the DOJ has been undergoing changes under Trump and Harmeet Dhillon (assistant AG for civil rights at the DOJ), and the left hasn’t been happy (the article is from a few days after Trump’s inauguration):
Justin Levitt, deputy assistant attorney general in the Civil Rights Division under Obama, expressed concern over Dhillon’s nomination, saying most of her casework has focused on “cultural grievance issues.”
Interesting way to trivialize it. More:
He argued that Dhillon largely hasn’t focused on the traditional mission of the Civil Rights Division, which was established by the passage of the 1957 Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination against all people in the United States, with a focus on vulnerable groups.
See that shift? The Act bars discrimination against all people in the US. But it’s the left that gets to define what “vulnerable groups” are and therefore which ones deserve defending, and by their definition it’s not Christians or white people or women in sports.

Something that has gone largely unnoticed is that the people who used to litter the streets screaming “racism” have disappeared. They have not gone away, but they have suddenly been marginalized. They spend their days on sites like Bluesky wondering why no one seems to care what they have to say anymore. The sites that used to pay for them to be pests are no longer interested in their material.
One possible reason for this is that racism may have run its course. This novel moral concept that emerged a century ago may have finally burned itself out in the last great moral panic. White people are no longer concerned that their observations of the world may be at odds with the morality of these strange people who demanded we worship a violent drug addict like George Floyd.
It is hard to imagine, given that racism as a sin has been with us since anyone can remember, but it is a novel concept. A century ago, few people would have understood the word at all, much less incorporated the concept. Even fifty years ago it was possible to dismiss the idea. In the long history of human civilization, this weird idea is nothing more than a strange middle-class fad.

ZMan cuts to the chase.
A recurring feature of human society is the class of people who set themselves apart from the rest of society to function as the keepers of public morality. They usually set themselves apart through self-denial, which is a way of showing themselves to be purer than the rest of the lot. It is thought that the Jewish prohibition on eating pork, for example, is a way to set the Jewish people apart from the rest of the people by abstaining from what was considered a dirty animal.
This is why every religion has both dietary laws and prohibitions on certain types of common behavior. It may be that these only apply to the holy men, as was common in the pre-Christian world. They can also be standards against which people measure themselves, as in the Christian world. The ancient shaman was someone expected to sublimate his urges as a sign of his purity. Christians, of course, have many rules that are guides for adhering to Christian ethics.
In the post-Christian age, the priestly class follows a similar pattern. The people we call the managerial elite and their performative proxies in the media have many ways of demonstrating their purity. In fact, we have the phrase “purity spiral” to describe when a group of these people engage in a competition in which they try to prove they are the purest of the bunch. Many of the moral panics over the last decades have been the result of purity spirals that spun out of control.
…
We see the same thing in this age. Public figures kneeling in front of the cameras, allegedly in solidarity with the blacks, was no different than the ancients sacrificing a bull to the gods. When they forced their employees to kneel, it was another way of signaling their virtue to each other and the rest of us. The Covid panic, in many respects, was nothing more than a purity spiral among the managerial elite. It is why it had so many outward symbols of obedience to the god of Covid.

In American politics, the main beneficiaries of “dark money” have in recent years tended to be Democrats. Google representatives were reported to have visited the White House at least 427 times during Barack Obama’s two terms. And in 2024, big spenders like Bill Gates, Reid Hoffman, Marc Benioff, Alex Soros, James Murdoch, Michael Bloomberg, and various donors from Wall Street helped Kamala Harris raise over US$1.5 billion for her campaign, the highest figure in history.
Which demonstrates convincingly that one cannot ‘buy’ an election, popular mythology to the contrary notwithstanding. You have to have a good candidate, not an empty suit like Harris.
This also undercuts the premise of the article pretty thoroughly. Oligarchs have power only to the extent that money gives them access to politicians, who are the people who have the Real Power (that of the gun). Rich people have a lot of carrots at their disposal, which give them influence, but power grows from the barrel of a gun, and the sticks are firmly in control of the bureaucrats. This is why any talk of American ‘oligarchs’ is pure hysteria.

I’ve written about Vietnam many many times on this blog – in fact, it’s an entire category of posts numbering over a hundred, some of them personal including parts of my “A mind is a difficult thing to change” series.

Since the UK Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that the word “woman” in equality legislation really does mean woman, other decisive steps have been made in the national trans debate.
First, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said—albeit unconvincingly—that he was pleased with the ruling. Then, it was announced as a follow-up also to last year’s Cass review that the National Health Service will now test all children who believe they are transgender for neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and ADHD. Medics will also evaluate each child’s sexual development, including possible same-sex attractions, whereas such individuals were previously misdiagnosed, and at great cost.
But efforts are also underway to undermine what campaigners described as the “incredibly worrying” Supreme Court verdict.

The firm found that London had lost 11,300 dollar millionaires in just 12 months, including 18 individuals with a net worth of $100 million or more, and two billionaires.
London, which now has 215,700 millionaires, is one of only two cities in the top 50 — the other being the heavily sanctioned capital of Russia, Moscow—that has fewer rich individuals than a decade ago.

Over the weekend, Buffalo Police SVU Detective Richard Hy appeared on the popular Unsubscribe Podcast and blew the whistle on Buffalo Public Schools with accusations that officials had destroyed evidence of an attempted abduction at one school, obstructed investigations of child sexual assault, and looked the other way for child abuse until it was too late. But instead of pouring resources into looking into the allegations, Buffalo media chose to make Hy, a long time hate-object of theirs, the target of their reporting.
In the podcast episode titled “Your Kids Are In Danger – SVU Detective Exposes Buffalo School System,” Hy made several allegations against Buffalo Public Schools; sharing several incidents he and his fellow officers had to deal with.

The minority leader of the Colorado House of Representatives warned that a bill making its way in the Colorado Senate represents a “huge violation of parental rights.”
The state Senate will hear testimony about House Bill 1312, which would remove kids from parents’ custody for behaviors like “misgendering” and “deadnaming,” on Wednesday. The bill passed the state House earlier this month 36-20, with nine members absent, in a largely party-line vote.
“As parents, we have the God-given right to raise our children in the way that we see fit,” House Minority Leader Rose Pugliese, a Republican, told The Daily Signal in an interview Friday. “We all take issue with the notion that if you don’t subscribe to a certain ideology, that that could affect your parental rights or even custody of our children.”

- This largest-known study of the abortion pill is based on analysis of data from an all-payer insurance claims database that includes 865,727 prescribed mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023.
- 10.93 percent of women experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious adverse event within 45 days following a mifepristone abortion.
- The real-world rate of serious adverse events following mifepristone abortions is at least 22 times as high as the summary figure of “less than 0.5 percent” in clinical trials reported on the drug label.
- The FDA should immediately reinstate its earlier, stronger patient safety protocols to ensure physician responsibility for women who take mifepristone under their care, as well as mandate full reporting of its side effects.
- The FDA should further investigate the harm mifepristone causes to women and, based on objective safety criteria, reconsider its approval altogether.

Harvard University quietly trained members of a Chinese “paramilitary organization” on two occasions after the U.S. government sanctioned the group for its role in the Uyghur genocide. The Ivy League institution could face “a big legal problem” as a result, according to one foreign policy expert.
In 2019, Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health partnered with Beijing’s National Health Security Administration (NHSA) to launch an annual health financing course, training government staffers from across China. Harvard originally noted in a blog post that officials with the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) participated in the inaugural training, but that language was scrubbed following a Washington Free Beacon inquiry.
The Trump administration sanctioned the XPCC in 2020 “in connection with serious rights abuses against ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” describing it as a “paramilitary organization … that is subordinate to the Chinese Communist Party.” But Harvard continued to train its members, once in 2023 and again in 2024. On those occasions, the Ivy League university didn’t include their participation on its webpages.

The Other McCain.
There is a lot left unsaid in the New York Times article which, it should be obvious, is primarily intended to obscure the fact that (a) the crash was caused by pilot error and (b) the pilot was female.
Do not accuse me of saying something I’m not saying, i.e., that this particular crash happened because the pilot was female, or that there is no such thing as a qualified female pilot. Every day, hundreds of successful flights are made by female pilots, including military pilots. Furthermore, if you were to research aircraft crashes in which pilot error was chiefly to blame, no doubt the overwhelming majority of those pilots are male. Perhaps it would be possible to show from such statistics (which I haven’t even bothered to Google, much less to analyze) that female pilots are more prone to catastrophic errors than are male pilots, but the fact remains that most female pilots are never involved in crashes, so that the deadly error committed by Rebecca Lobach does cannot be said to reflect badly on female pilots in general. However . . .
All of these caveats, necessary to prevent anyone from misconstruing my argument, do not detract from the issue of public policy involved here, namely the implementation of official quotas under the aegis of “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” (DEI). We are more than a half-century into this kind of experimental social engineering, and the same thing is true today as it was when the Supreme Court handed down the Bakke decision in 1978 — every attempt to implement what used to be called “affirmative action,” but has since been rebranded as “diversity” or DEI, led to discriminatory quotas, which are unconstitutional.

Canada has one of the most protectionist economies among developed nations. It particularly targets American farmers, media, and manufacturers. That may be why Donald Trump launched his counterattack on trade offenders with a 25% tariff on many imports from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on Canadian energy.
Unhelpfully, Trump claimed authority to do so under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act because of an “extraordinary threat” posed by “unchecked drug trafficking.” The White House failed to explain how this applied to Canada. And, while his goals are entirely correct, his April 2 “Liberation Day” global strike, imposing 10% baseline tariffs on almost all nations, and so-called reciprocal tariffs on friends and foes alike, roiled markets and aligned the world against us. That’s why Trump rapidly retreated, suspending reciprocal tariffs, except for China.
Clever countries are waging trade war on us. Despite this, America has the world’s strongest economy. Except where there are national security considerations that mandate pulling our punches, the U.S. can win every time – if we play chess, not Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. When it comes to using tariffs as a weapon, Trump should focus on two or three targets at a time, take them down, and then move on to the next. I nominate China, the European Union (see here) and Canada.

I.e. ‘should parents kill potential children would be at high risk of becoming fat’?
Parents who opt to use Orchid get an extensive analysis of their embryos’ risk analysis for a variety of health conditions, including (but not limited to) autism, severe obesity, Alzheimer’s, inflammatory bowel disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, and breast cancer.
In a 2024 video, Orchid founder Noor Siddiqui compares the screening of two of her 16 embryos. Embryo 2 and Embryo 3, Siddiqui notes, are both “chromosomally normal.” But Embryo 3 has an elevated risk for breast cancer. Embryo 2, she adds, has an elevated risk for celiac disease.
Left unknown is whether either Embryo 2 or Embryo 3 will get a chance to grow up.
Welcome to our brave new world.

A liberal society depends on its procedures as well as its institutions. Foremost among these is the error-correction mechanism of scientific method and critical inquiry. In his important book The Constitution of Knowledge, Jonathan Rauch identifies current threats to the pursuit of reliable knowledge. He argues that “politicising an academic discipline like sociology or literary criticism, or spreading propaganda to discredit and drown out fact-based journalism” is as damaging as, in the hard sciences, banning the teaching of evolution or denying the efficacy of vaccines.
This article recounts a case of bogus and politicised scholarship—propaganda—in the social sciences. A research article claiming to provide computational linguistic proof of bias in America’s premier newspaper of record is vitiated by ignorance of syntax yet the editors of the academic journal that published it decline to withdraw it.

Newsom wrote to California Energy Commission (CEC) Vice Chair Siva Gunda on Monday to urge that Gunda and the CEC “redouble” their efforts to keep fuel refiners in the state on the heels of Valero’s announcement that it will be taking at least one of its California refineries offline by April 2026. In the letter, Newsom attempts to characterize the state’s dwindling refining presence as part of a wider national trend, but analysts have warned for years that California’s hostile regulatory environment is what is truly driving the fossil fuel industry’s retreat from the state.
“I write to direct you to redouble the State’s efforts to work closely with refiners on short- and long-term planning, including through high-level, immediate engagement, to help ensure that Californians continue to have access to a safe, affordable and reliable supply of transportation fuels, and that refiners continue to see the value in serving the California market, even as demand for fossil fuels continues its gradual decline over the coming decades,” the letter states. “Further, I am directing you, as my Administration’s lead representative on this issue, to reinforce the State’s openness to a collaborative relationship and our firm belief that Californians can be protected from price spikes and refiners can profitably operate in California — a market where demand for gasoline will still exist for years to come.”
