In Tuesday’s Republican presidential primary debate, Senator Marco Rubio wondered aloud why Americans insist that the only legitimate option after compulsory education is college. “For the life of me, I don’t know why we have stigmatized vocational education,” Rubio said. “Welders make more money than philosophers. We need more welders and less [sic] philosophers.”
Events this week prove Rubio right, and not just in terms of the American economy. University campuses these days produce far fewer philosophers and more outright fascists in shutting down speech and scrutiny. Two incidents in the past fortnight have shone a bright light on the failure of academics to protect the kind of free speech that succeeds in producing philosophers – or educated adults in general.

Ammo Grrrll remembers.
“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” {Exactly like Obama, except that he will support any foe and oppose any friend while trying to lose every conflict slowly enough so that it’s the next guy’s problem.}
“To those nations who would make themselves our adversary…we dare not tempt them with weakness.” {What? No such thing as an adversary. Just friends we haven’t caved to yet. Weakness is Putin being on “the wrong side of history.” Tremble, Putin, tremble.}
And, of course, the big finish with “Ask not what your country can do for you.” Seriously?
Can you imagine any Democrat who hoped to be elected saying any of that today? Why, today it’s ALL about what your country (read: “taxpayers”) can do for you! Been a thoroughly-unrepentant criminal? Not a problem. We’re issuing an edict that no potential employer can even ASK! Hightailed it away from your platoon to join up with the enemy? Not a problem. Welcome home! Invite your parents to the White House! Enter the country illegally? Not a problem! Have a baby and some foodstamps! Got a penis but feeling kind of girlish today? Aw, go ahead, shower with the girls! Only bigots could possibly oppose that.

The Huffington Post called the shortage “devastating,” and the Obama administration’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology predicted a shortfall of 1 million technical professionals by 2020. What’s more, 90 percent of executives report that they struggle to recruit and retain tech talent.
But as an engineer, founder and tech executive, I see a certain absurdity in this conversation — I’ve never thought talented people are particularly tough to find. Perhaps I don’t understand because I’m lucky and haven’t faced the same challenges as other tech CEOs, but I don’t think so. I think I, too, have lived those experiences.
In fact, I’ve come to believe the so-called “talent shortage” is a lie — the real shortage is of companies that are willing to invest in talented people.

The working theory is that the students are of a generation raised by helicopter in a therapeutic culture – in shorthand, they lack the very basic coping skills that most everyone in generations previous developed as of course. Rather than “walking off” a skinned knee or saying “sticks and stones” in response to a bully’s insult, they’re acculturated to appeal to authority for attention, protection, and justice (revenge).
At the same time, overt racial and other discrimination and expressions thereof having receded, a need arose to find racial or sexist offense in innocuous statements and neutral acts for the Left to maintain fuel for its resentment politics – see, for example, the theories of “privilege” and “micro-agressions.” (Putting those words in quotes is likely an expression of my “privilege” while also serving as a “micro-agression.”)

Educator and writer Michael Copperman has discovered that Portland’s hip scene has come at a price: young people moving to Portland from other parts of the country have gentrified North Portland, traditionally a heavily black neighborhood, and displaced blacks to the suburbs. “The number of people living in poverty in Portland’s suburbs shot up almost 100 percent between 2000 and 2011,” observes Copperman.
Portland is, of course, justly famous as the whitest city in America.
While such income and racial integration might be welcome, it has its costs as well. While the whites gentrifying North Portland neighborhoods enjoy food carts, boutique restaurants, and ethnic grocery stores, displaced blacks are not better off in the suburbs and in many cases are worse off, replacing the single-family homes they rented with cramped apartments.
“Suburban Portland, home to the most notorious white West Coast gangs, has in some hotspots become a turf war apartment complex by apartment complex, the traditional Crips and Bloods of urban Portland overlapping areas dominated by the European Kindred and affiliates, all battling to control lucrative sex trafficking operations off the I-5 Corridor,” says Copperman, a transition that is pretty much invisible to recently arrived Millennials.

Dr. Dale Brigham, considered one of the most beloved professors at the University of Missouri, has resigned after refusing to cancel an exam for students who claimed to feel “unsafe.”
“If you don’t feel safe coming to class, then don’t come to class,” Dr. Brigham told his students. “I will be there, and there will be an exam administered in our class,” he continued, imploring his students to stand up to the bullies on campus. “If you give into bullies, they win. The only way bullies are defeated is by standing up to them.”
…
Under intense pressure, Dr. Brigham has both cancelled the exam and resigned from the university, according to screenshots posted online of an email from Dr. Brigham to his students.
“The exam is cancelled. Our students will be able to take the exam at an alternate date with no loss of points,” Dr. Brigham told students. “No one will have to come to class today. And, I am resigning my position.”

Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, used “brutal and calculated” manipulation to subjugate women under his control, repeatedly assaulting some of them them and using violence and sexual degradation to bend them to his will, Southwark Crown Court was told.
He founded a collective in the 1970s called the Workers Institute and used his charisma and energy as a public speaker to draw people to him, it was claimed.

The student protest at the University of Missouri began as a response to a serious problem — outbursts of vile racism on campus — and quickly devolved into an expression of a renewed left-wing hostility to freedom of expression. At the protest on Missouri’s campus yesterday, on a space that is expressly open to free expression, protesters barred journalists from covering the demonstrations. In one scene, protesters surrounded and harassed Tim Tai, a photographer with the student newspaper, chanting, “Hey, hey, ho, ho, journalists have got to go.” The scene is captured on a video here, which rewards close watching until the end, where Melissa Click, a professor of mass media working with the protest movement, calls out, “Help me get this reporter out of here. I need some muscle over here.”

Why did these activists and organic food industry lobbyists oppose a government-funded educational program which improved the molecular biology knowledge and expertise of high school students? A press release entitled “Keine Akzeptanzbeschaffung für Agro-Gentechnik an Schulen!” (“No Acceptance for Agricultural Gene Technology at Schools“) in 2012 by an alliance representing “organic” or “natural food” farmers accompanied by the publication of a critical “study” with the same title (PDF), which was funded by this alliance as well as its anti-GMO partners, gives us some clues. They feared that the high school students might become too accepting of biotechnology in agriculture and that the curriculum did not sufficiently highlight all the potential dangers of GMOs. By allowing the ethical discussions to not only discuss the risks but also mention the benefits of genetically modifying crops, students might walk away with the idea that GMOs could be beneficial for humankind. The group believed that taxpayer money should not be used to foster special interests such as those of the agricultural industry which may want to use GMOs.
These are the people who want everybody to confess Global Warming because science! I guess some science is more equal than others.

This is part of the whole “consensus” scam that is central to global warming hysteria. The idea is to make it impossible for scientists who are skeptical of global warming to receive any funding or get published in peer-reviewed journals — and then declare that, lo and behold, there are no published scientists who are skeptical about global warming! The idea is to proclaim a spontaneous “consensus” that you created by excluding anyone who disagrees with you.

On Monday, America’s undergraduate college system melted down in three humiliating incidents.
At Yale, in a brouhaha over Halloween costumes that has been dragging on for a week and a half now, a distinguished professor apologized for defending freedom of speech and thereby triggering a black coed to screech obscenities at him. This sorry incident called to mind the struggle sessions of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, when the national leader encouraged self-righteous young nitwits to force scholars to wear dunce caps.
…
Americans love a winner. And the easiest way to win at college football is to recruit violent young men other coaches wouldn’t dare bring on campus. For example, although Coach Gary Pinkel is being praised for backing his players in their crusade to have the college president fired for being white, he’s presided over at least two major rape scandals.

Without consulting anyone, of course, least of all whoever owns the trees, in this case the City of San Francisco.
There is a group of fruit lovers in San Francisco that practice something known as “guerrilla grafting” – they graft fruit bearing branches onto fruitless, ornamental trees across the Bay Area city. Having access to free fruit sounds like a wonderful idea, considering the number of homeless people who can rarely afford a decent meal, but guerrilla grafting is actually illegal.
In many metropolitan areas, urban foresters make sure that flowering fruit trees don’t bear any fruit, in order to keep fallen fruit from making a mess on sidewalks and attracting vermin. Most public trees are fruitless, a fact that the Guerilla Grafters obviously don’t like. While authorities see urban fruit-bearing trees as a nuisance, these agricultural rebels see them as an opportunity to provide fresh, healthy produce for free to anyone who walks by.
And, of course, the world must bend to their will.

Those who believe the Digital Revolution will create more work also overlook the realities of risk when it comes to employing people. Once again, I wonder how many of these people have ever hired a single person on their own dime, i.e. with their own money, paid the overhead costs of an employer and took the risks of hiring employees.
Almost as risky as being white and going to college.
Those within the insurance industry know that there is an entire class of people who claim injuries in department stores, etc. so they can settle for $5,000 each “incident”– and they get the settlement because it will cost the corporation far more than $5,000 to contest, investigate, go to court, etc.
Not to mention the people who make a living suing under the ADA because your toilet is an inch too low.
As for hiring someone myself–I can’t afford the true costs or risks. It literally makes no financial sense to hire someone if you pay the full freight. I will hire formal enterprises that pay the full costs of their employees, but only when I can’t do the work myself.
Welcome to the Obamanation. Be careful not to step in the diversity.

Today, U.S. fast-food workers will strike across 270 cities in a protest for higher wages and union rights that they hope will catch the attention of candidates in 2016 elections, organizers said.
The walkouts will be followed by protests in 500 cities by low-wage workers in such sectors as fast food and home and child care, a statement by organizers of the Fight for $15 campaign said on Monday.
The protests and strikes are aimed at gaining candidates’ support heading into the 2016 election for a minimum wage of $15 an hour and union rights, it said.
The strikes and protests will include workers from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King , KFC and other restaurants, the statement said.
Let’s see … when you raise the price of labor, then the cost advantage of labor over automation goes down, and then…
According to a recent BofA reported on how robotics will reshape the world, San Francisco start up Momentum Machines are out to fully automate the production of burgers with the aim of replacing a human fast food worker. The machine can shape burgers from ground meat, grill them to order with the specified amount of char, toast buns, add tomatoes, onions, pickles, and finally place it on a conveyor belt.
The robot is shown below. It occupies 24 square feet, and is much smaller and efficient than most assembly-line fast-food operations. It provides “gourmet cooking methods never before used in a fast food restaurant” and will deposit the completed burger into a bag. It does all of this without a trace of attitude.
Hm… Guess that’s not going according to plan.

Christakis lives at Yale, where he presides over one of its undergraduate colleges. His wife Erika, a lecturer in early childhood education, shares that duty. They reside among students and are responsible for shaping residential life. And before Halloween, some students complained to them that Yale administrators were offering heavy-handed advice on what Halloween costumes to avoid.
Erika Christakis reflected on the frustrations of the students, drew on her scholarship and career experience, and composed an email inviting the community to think about the controversy through an intellectual lens that few if any had considered. Her message was a model of relevant, thoughtful, civil engagement.
For her trouble, a faction of students are now trying to get the couple removed from their residential positions, which is to say, censured and ousted from their home on campus. Hundreds of Yale students are attacking them, some with hateful insults, shouted epithets, and a campaign of public shaming. In doing so, they have shown an illiberal streak that flows from flaws in their well-intentioned ideology.

The past three decades, though, have seen a decline of about 28 percent in Americans’ appetite for beef, and the supply of hides has dwindled accordingly. At the same time, drought in the Midwest has pushed up feed prices. The result is that America has fewer and more expensive cows. Meanwhile, the world’s consumers still want leather goods.

The major defect in these posturings by ‘creative’ type about what people going to college are going to college for is that they forget that they are unrepresentative of the Real World. People aren’t willing to go a hundred thousand dollars into debt in order to be better citizens; they do it because they hope to get a college degree that will allow them to make a lot of money. It’s just that simple. Unfortunately they think that a degree in Gender Studies or Puppetry will do that, and are destined for a rude awakening; in such cases, a traditional liberal arts degree would have stood them in better stead.

If this is true, Europe will explode. This is triple the 2015 yearly rate of about a million (which itself was an over three-fold increase from the 282,000 that came in 2014). That current rate has already led to the rise of the far right, serious stresses on national and local governments, and the partial breakdown of the Schengen system. So far, many of these stresses have been manageable and perhaps reversible—but if things get three times as bad as they are right now, that will all change. Strong polls for the far right will likely become an election (or elections) in which a party like the Sweden Democrats or Front National takes office; Schengen hiccups could become an outright collapse of the system; and both inter- and intra-national tensions will skyrocket.
In the seminal book Camp of the Saints, Respail posited one million new immigrants into southern France, which is sufficient to destroy the French as a coherent nation. This will be quite a bit worse.

The most interesting case in Ronson’s book is that of Formula One mogul Max Mosley. He was allegedly caught attending an S&M sex session with prostitutes dressed as Nazis. Instead of apologizing or hiding, his response was “I can think of few things more un-erotic than Nazi role play.” He didn’t deny the encounter. He just clarified the details. They were Germans, not Nazis. He then sued News of the World and won. As far as Ronson is concerned, Mosley beat the system. He refused to kowtow and told the mob they were the ones who should be ashamed, so they just moved on. It’s like that scene in the new War of the Worlds where Tom Cruise aims a mirror at the probe and it immediately continues the hunt elsewhere. Within 24 hours of publication, “orthorexia” was trending on Facebook and the piece had garnered thousands of comments. Half the responses were ecstatic: “Awesome article,” one person wrote. “[I] would get incredibly anxious in the presence of certain foods such as rice or white potatoes before realizing that I had some kind of problem but couldn’t pinpoint what it was until I finally heard the word ‘orthorexia.’”
…
Most doctors don’t yet recognize “orthorexia,” at least, not as an official diagnosis. But people who have spent hours looking at images of food online probably will. It’s a perfect explanation for the fixation on “clean eating” that exists offline but can be exacerbated by the food blogs, or the anxiety around health that exists just outside the frames of carefully-crafted Instagram shots of well-composed plates. When Instagrammer Jordan Younger, better known as “the blonde vegan,” announced that she would be easing up on her restrictive-yet-aesthetically-pleasing diet because it was making her isolated and ill, the post was so popular it crashed the site. “Islamophobia” is a term of art invented by fanatics to stigmatize their opponents. Speaking as “Minnesota’s chief federal law enforcement officer,” really ought to know better than to employ it in this context.
Luger’s article is short on examples of “Islamophobia.” What is he talking about? To fill out his column Luger draws on his childhood experience of anti-Semitism. Luger’s column appeared earlier this week, before Professor Moshe Halbertal was shouted down at the University of Minnesota Law School. The Oxymoron Party is at it again.
In the ongoing fight between Democrats and Republicans over election procedures like voter ID and early voting, the Democrats are supposedly the champions of higher turnout and reducing barriers to participation. But when it comes to scheduling off-cycle elections like those taking place today, the Democratic Party is the champion of voter suppression.
…
Scheduling elections at odd times appears to be a deliberate strategy aimed at keeping turnout low, which gives more influence to groups like teachers unions that have a direct stake in the election’s outcome.
…
Why do Democrats and Democratic-aligned groups prefer off-cycle elections? When school boards and other municipal offices are up for election at odd times, few run-of-the-mill voters show up at the polls, but voters with a particular interest in these elections — like city workers themselves — show up in full force. The low-turnout election allows their policy goals to dominate.

It should also call into question the wisdom of laws against so-called “hate speech,” an inherently subjective category.

Or at least claim they do. Pardon my skepticism. ‘But it must be true! There’s a study!’ Yeah.
I’d certainly be interested in a study that looked at how many of those same ‘black millenials’ indulged in criminal behavior, but of course no such study will ever be forthcoming — for that we have to depend on the YouTube videos of black flash mob crime sprees.

Police said Rivera and four other men were fixing dinner and drinking in an apartment at 1445 Lakeside Estates. Officials said Rivera got angry when Darwin Gonzalez, 34, took the last piece of chicken. The two men began arguing and the argument spilled out into the parking lot where fists started flying.
Investigators said at some point, Rivera stabbed Gonzalez with a knife and fled.
Sure, we need more Hispanics in this country. Adds diversity, don’t you know.

Libya has issued a veiled threat to send “hundreds of thousands” of extra migrants to Europe if Brussels does not give official recognition to its self-declared government.
Officials say they could hire boats to send large numbers of African migrants across the Mediterranean, massively adding to the numbers already reaching Europe’s borders.
The warning was made by a spokesman for the National Salvation Government of Libya’s General National Congress in an interview with The Telegraph in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

The Greensboro massacre occurred on November 3, 1979 in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. Five protest marchers were shot and killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party at a rally organized by communists intended to demonstrate radical, even violent, opposition to the Klan. The “Death to the Klan March” and protest was the culmination of attempts by the Communist Workers’ Party to organize mostly black industrial workers in the area.
Let’s see: Hold a ‘Death to the Klan’ march, and five of your guys get shot and killed.
The Left keeps holding these “Death to X” and “Smash the Y” rallies and it never seems to work. I wonder why.

What’s happening in Denmark is part of a trend. Since 2001, it’s become more difficult for migrants, especially Moslems, to stay in Europe. More of these refugees are getting deported back to the old country. And those wanted by the United States are getting extradited, although only after the Americans promise not to send the accused to Guantanamo, or to execute them. Other than that it’s good riddance. The Europeans need all the jail cells they can get, because more and more of their own Moslems are crossing the line, and getting locked up. Despite decades of good intentions and accepting millions of Moslem refugees Europeans are realizing that they have caused more problems than they hoped to solve.

Richard Fernandez turns over a rock.
The New York Times has a series of articles examining the causes of why an entire generation “has become less tolerant of free speech” noting the growing list of subjects or persons that are now banned on campuses to prevent people from freaking out.
In defense of this trend, a recent graduate from Brown explained that certain points of view were intolerable to people and they saw no reason to endure it. Therefore, a rising generation that simply wanted a “more inclusive and just world” has decided to exclude certain people and topics the way filters block unwanted signals.
Such “safe spaces” shouldn’t be disparaged as echo chambers she argues, but rather regarded as a form of air conditioning where the mental content can be maintained in a desired state. Surely no one can object to air conditioned rooms? Why not thought conditioned campuses? What they neglect to consider in the argument is the cost of air conditioning. All controlled environments cost money and quit working the moment power goes out.
The safe spaces they crave don’t exist in in the ambient environment. To maintain a “nuclear free” or “gun free” zone someone has to do the distasteful work of maintaining it. Probably some guard, soldier or policeman with a gun. Cafeterias and dorms have to be supplied with meat, fossil fuels and dirty pharmaceuticals; the wrong people have to be shown the door by the academic equivalent of a bouncer. All this takes labor and costs money.

The following news report was originally broadcast by Spiegel TV Magazin. In it you can follow the columns of “refugees” from their landing on Lesbos through the Balkans to their arrival in Austria, with their final destination Germany.
Every step of the way they are simply waved through, in violation of the Schengen Agreement and EU law. But none of that seems to matter to any of the countries along the route — the important thing is to get them to Germany as quickly as possible. After all, it was Chancellor Angela Merkel who invited them.

A key part of imposing the Camp of the Saints on Europe is to demoralize Europeans with the argument that it’s impossible for European countries to maintain land and sea borders: Whaddaya whaddaya? Dontcha know, the migrant always gets through!
Two obvious counter-examples, however, are Israel and Australia. Israel is tricky to demonize for obvious reasons, especially in America, but demoralizing Australians into giving up their quite effective system that keeps out boat people is straightforward. White Australians are evil and therefore deserve to lose their country.
