David Cole understands the dialectic.
Of course, just as the trolls on the right are planning their Tubman-bill stamp-a-thons, the perpetually outraged SJWs on the left are (guess what) outraged over the notion, and they are (guess what again) calling on the government to change and tighten the laws regarding currency defacement. The truth is, everyone is looking forward to the upcoming plague of Tubman-note vandalization. Every incident in which an ape face is stamped over a Tubman twenty will be another autopilot homepage piece for Salon and the Huffington Post. And of course the Salon and HuffPo writers will be unable to report the story without adding something anti-conservative, anti-Republican, or anti-white, which will lead to hundreds of posts in the conservative and right-wing press expressing outrage at the outrage. Every troll caught in the act of defacing the bills will become a reviled Internet superstar, and plenty of “people of color” will deface the bills themselves in order to sue for emotional pain and suffering after claiming to have received the defaced note as change from a purchase or a withdrawal from an ATM. The government will gleefully rush in to pass new laws tightening the definition of what’s illegal under federal statute 18 USC § 333, and probably a tech firm or two will earn a tidy profit by creating new technology making it impossible to use defaced or slightly altered twenties in vending machines.

Actually, the problem is not the ‘transgender’ people, who are too few on the ground to bother about. It’s the perverts pretending to be transgender people that are the problem.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested over allegedly tweeting a bomb threat during a Donald Trump rally.
Police accuse Sean Taylor Morkys, 20, of tweeting: “Is someone going to bomb the trump rally or am I going to have to?”
This message was reportedly followed by another tweet warning his friend to get his family to leave the rally so they wouldn’t get hurt.
Note that this is an anti-Trump person, not a Trump supporter.

Don Boudreaux, a Real Economist, waxes philosophical.
One of the many lovely benefits of the mass prosperity made possible by free-market innovationism is that it unleashes the better angels within us – angels that encourage us to turn some, and sometimes much, of our time and individual attentions toward helping others. The mother of children dying of diarrhea or near starvation isn’t much interested in helping strangers. In contrast, the mother of children healthy and well-fed has the luxury of being able to care about strangers.
But this praiseworthy human moral sentiment can, and often does, backfire. Wealthy people – by which I mean people healthy, well-fed, well-clothed, well-shod, well-housed, and well-leisured and literate – are often deformed by their better angels into saviors. Busybodies. Officious do-gooders. Arrogant meddlers. Tyrants seeking as personal payoff not crass material gain but the perverted satisfaction of lording it over other people for what these tyrants sincerely believe to be the good of these other people.
In other words, Democrats.

An American University faculty member attempted to make life difficult for journalists covering a campus protest last night, but her plan went awry after she called the police.
The Washington Examiner’s Ashe Schow was at AU last night reporting on Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopolous’ visit to campus. Yiannopoulos is a deliberately controversial figure, and his presence on campus prompted a student protest.
A female faculty member—now dubbed Melissa Click 2.0–tried to interfere, telling Schow and her camera crew that they were required to accompany her inside. They had to follow “certain regulations that the university is guided by” because AU is providing “a safe space for everybody who works or studies on this campus,” she claimed.
After the faculty member realized Schow’s group was recording her, she became hostile. “Are you kidding me?” she asked. “Seriously, I’m calling the police.”
The police didn’t immediately respond to her call. Later, when the cops did appear, the faculty member expected them to escort the journalists off campus. Instead, they wanted to have a chat with the faculty member, according to Breitbart News.
“The police came over and she thought they were going to save her but actually they escorted HER away,” Schow wrote on Twitter.
‘Progressives’ think that the instruments of state oppression are now in their hands, but apparently the Revolutions hasn’t fully completed yet.

Gavin McInnes does stupid stuff so you don’t have to.
I went to a Bernie Sanders rally dressed as a liberal douche and it went exactly as expected. It was in Washington Square Park next to NYU and there were about 27,000 students, hipsters, and Ben & Jerry’s boomers there with pamphlets and buttons and kooky sunglasses. As with the Trump rallies, the audience skewed male, but unlike the Trump rallies, there did not appear to be one person there who was not retarded. “Fuck Hillary,” a towering hipster told me. “She started Bengali.”
And that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about Berni’s ‘base’.
Millionaires pay pretty damn close to 50% right now. I know I do. The top 20% earners in America pay 80% of the income tax. You can try to squeeze more out of them, but when you tax something, you get less of it. Besides, as Bill Whittle has pointed out, the government is presently spending $10B a day. You could take 100% of Bill Gates’ AND Warren Buffet’s money and you’d cover just over a week of government spending. Now you’re out Gates and Buffet and all the jobs they create. You’ve also discouraged anyone else from following in their footsteps. Way to go, Bernie Bros.

Why do so many people continue to pursue doctorates?
They don’t know what else to do, and money is easy to come by, thanks to Uncle Sam.
Getting a Ph.D. has always been a long haul. Despite calls for reform, the time spent in graduate programs hasn’t declined significantly in the past decade. In 2014, students spent eight years on average in graduate school programs to earn a Ph.D. in the social sciences, for example. It takes nine years to get one in the humanities, seven for science fields and engineering, and 12 for education, according to NSF. In other words, Ph.D.s are typically nearing or in their 30s by the time they begin their careers. Many of their friends have probably already banked a decade’s worth of retirement money in a 401K account; some may have already put a down payment on a small town house.
But … but … but … that would mean actually going out and getting a job!
Why hasn’t all this information helped winnow down the ranks of aspiring professors—why hasn’t it proved to be an effective Ph.D. prophylactic? Are people risking so much in the hopes of getting a cushy job with a six-figure salary and no teaching requirements? Is it because academia is a cult that makes otherwise sane people believe that there is no life outside of the university? Are graduate programs failing to inform their students about the realities of the job market? There are no answers to those questions in the charts and graphs from the NSF.

Jaywalking was once a semi-derogatory term referring to country bumpkins, or ‘jays’, who inefficiently meandered around American cities; by the 1920s, the term was being used to transfer blame for accidents from motorists to pedestrians. Making jaywalking illegal gave the supremacy of mobility to those sitting behind combustion engines. Once upon a time, the public roads belonged to everyone. But since the ingenious invention of jaywalking we’ve battered pedestrianism in one of those silent culture wars where the only losers are ourselves.

Amazingly (and perversely), law schools have been able to continue to raise tuition while producing nearly twice as many graduates as the job market has been able to absorb. How is this possible? Why hasn’t the market corrected itself? The answer is that, for a given school, the availability of federal loans for law students has no connection to their poor post-graduation employment outcomes…

A group of 50 cars closed down the San Francisco Bay Bridge on Sunday evening to put on a road show. What’s really remarkable is that none of the offending drivers have been arrested. Yet.
A road show is when several cars coordinate together to block off traffic. The open lanes are then used as a stage for burnouts, donuts, and other tricks. Once these jokers have their fun, traffic is allowed to open back up. In this case, five drivers worked together to block all lanes on the Bay Bridge, SFGate reported. Once traffic was stopped, 50 show offs flooded the bridge.
While road shows might seem like a car enthusiast’s dream, they thoughtlessly force hundreds of drivers to sit in miles-long traffic backups. In this case, nobody was able to cross the Bay Bridge while this latest stunt took place. Police haven’t made any arrests at this time. In a video of the road show posted by Instagram user Bay Area Movement is appears that the cars have removed their license plates to avoid detection. So far the video has over 2,000 likes on Instagram.

Bottom line:
The experience turned out well, but it also left me queasy. The only reason Veronica was able to carry out her experiment was that I had the flexibility to spend hours struggling through paperwork, and because I had a social network of scientists I’ve developed as a science writer. This was an exercise in privilege.
If Veronica had been the daughter of a single parent with a couple jobs and no connections to the world of science — if she had been like a lot of American kids, in other words — her idea would have gone up in smoke. She might not have even bothered thinking about the science fair at all.
Notice that the author’s thesis is that there is a problem with science fairs. It doesn’t occur to him that the real problem is the regulations and restrictions on kids doing science. The Blue State Crustian mindset is plain to see — regulations and restrictions exist and are not to be questioned; what remains for us to do is to Create Programs so that even proles can cope with them. Because Diversity (or, as he puts it, ‘equity’). What doesn’t even occur to him is that getting rid of the regulations and restrictions might be preferable; Servants of the Crust just can’t even form the thought in their heads.

Using the term ‘plan’ very loosely.
Hillary Clinton’s proposed “New College Compact” is estimated by her campaign to cost $350 billion over ten years. According to the Clinton campaign, every cent of the $350 billion will come from tax increases on the American people. A review of the proposal by Americans for Tax Reform shows that as many as 438,000 New York households will be stuck with a higher tax bill.
The $350 billion tax hike over ten years comes in the form of a 28 percent cap on itemized deductions. The Clinton spending plan reduces the income tax deductibility of countless deductions including charitable donations, high medical bills, mortgage interest, and state and local taxes for Iowa families in the 33-percent, 35-percent, or 39.6 -percent brackets, limiting their value to just 28 percent.
According to IRS Statistics of Income Data for 2013 (the most recent year available), this Hillary tax hike will hit about 438,000 New York households, based on the number of families who earned over $200,000 and itemized their deductions.
The basic problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.

First, that between 2001 and 2012, players with publicly-documented pre-draft arrests were nearly twice as likely to be arrested after reaching the NFL than those who had not been arrested. The second, which is perhaps less obvious and more valuable, was that there was a small but clear correlation between arrests and Wonderlic tests scores. Haven’t seen much coverage of this.
Over the weekend a sensational spy saga appeared in the media, one that the U.S. Navy managed to keep out of the headlines for the last eight months. The Department of the Navy revealed that a career officer has been sitting in a brig in Norfolk, Virginia for months, suspected of espionage on behalf of a foreign power. Although the indictment was heavily redacted, it was obvious that the accused has done serious damage to our national security, not least because the charges—including communicating secret information “relating to the national defense to representatives of a foreign government”—could carry the death penalty.
It did not take long for reporters to uncover that the country the suspect stands accused of spying for is China, and the officer in custody is himself of Chinese origin. Neither of these facts can be considered shocking by those familiar with counterintelligence. Beijing spies aggressively on the United States, especially our navy, which is the major obstacle to China achieving its strategic goals in East Asia, while they mainly stick to their ethnic milieu in espionage. Indeed, Chinese intelligence operations against America that do not involve persons of Chinese origin or extraction are very much the exception.
The accused is Edward Lin, a career Navy officer, a lieutenant commander (equivalent to a major in our other armed services) and a naval flight officer. A graduate of the Naval War College who served as a navy liaison to Congress, his career was clearly going places. Particularly troubling is the fact that Mr. Lin spent much of that career assigned to maritime reconnaissance units, in other words squadrons that fly spy planes. He was assigned to very secret special units that collect signals intelligence from modified P-3 Orion patrol aircraft. In other words, Mr. Lin had to be a goldmine for Beijing, since he could reveal highly classified information regarding what the navy and American intelligence know about China.
Where’s a little profiling when you really need it?
Ties of ethnicity and foreign affinity are legitimate grounds for security inquiry. Countries like China, Iran and Russia, top spy threats all, routinely try to co-opt their nationals who have emigrated to the United States. Yet the mind boggles at the perversity of a navy security system that denies clearances to American Jewish dentists who join the service out of patriotism, but have relatives in Israel, yet allow dishonest Iranian immigrants to work on secret programs for 30 years. Something is very wrong here.
Indeed.

Heather Mac Donald turns over a rock.
Feminists incessantly harp about a phantom “rape culture” in the United States and other Western countries. On New Year’s Eve 2016, Northern European cities experienced an outbreak of the real thing—and the opponents of patriarchy went silent. It turns out that a more powerful force exists on the left than feminist victimology: multiculturalism.
My, what a surprise.
As revelers gathered in the central square of Cologne, Germany, for the traditional New Year’s Silvesternacht celebrations, thousands of North African and Middle Eastern males started throwing firecrackers into the crowd and attacking passersby. They pickpocketed and robbed males and females, but they directed most of their violence against women: grabbing their breasts and buttocks, inserting their fingers into the women’s vaginas, and, in a few instances, raping them, while shouting sexual insults. A total of 653 victims filed reports with the police.
…
German police and political leaders covered up the violence for days. A Cologne police-force press release originally reported that the Silvesternacht celebrations had been peaceful, though officers had witnessed the attacks. Police employees are “afraid of talking about these things in the context of the immigration debate today,” a Stockholm police spokesman told the Guardian, in reference to Sweden’s experience with Muslim sexual attacks on New Year’s Eve and at a music festival in 2014.
Eventually, however, news of the assaults leaked out, and the most surprising cover-up of all began. Leading feminists across the continent and in Great Britain either ignored the incidents entirely or distorted their significance beyond recognition. Silence was justified on the grounds that acknowledging the attacks would encourage opposition to the mass Muslim immigration that had engulfed Europe over the previous year. (German chancellor Angela Merkel accelerated that migration by declaring in August 2015 that her country would accept all Syrian asylum-seekers who made it in to her country.) Feminists were “finding it difficult to speak up about the event because of concerns it might be used to encourage aggression against refugees,” explained British journalist Jessica Abrahams. When feminists were cornered into addressing the violence, they tied themselves into knots trying to change the subject back to their favorite topic: Western white-male patriarchy. “The problem of sexualized violence has already existed here for some time and can’t simply be ‘deported,’” said German feminist Anne Wizorek to Der Spiegel. “It cannot be allowed to become the standard in gender debates that only male migrants are considered to be those responsible [for sexual violence].” In other words, the New Year’s assaults were continuous with the routine terror inflicted by German men on German women.

I’m sure Vegas has a line on when California implodes.
Even Jerry Brown admits that California’s newly mandated $15 an hour minimum wage is economically unsound, but we’re doing it anyway, Because Justice! Or something.
But it may not matter much, because California businesses may not have enough . . . electricity. Two headlines from the past week tell the story. First, you may have heard about a massive natural gas leak out near Newhall over the past few months. This was not a leaking production field, but was a huge underground gas storage formation that Southern California Edison draws from in the summer to run natural gas “peaker” plants when electricity demand soars during hot weather. Now that the leak is filled, the state has ordered than the underground formation not be refilled for the time being.
Guess what that natural gas was used for?
Such geniuses we have running California. Thank goodness we’re building high-speed rail. It’ll only take three times as long at twice the price of Southwest Air Lines to get up and down the state.
P.S. The necessity of conventional backup power for “renewables” is why the various mandates for expansion of renewable energy won’t translate into commensurate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It will be an amusing day when the data comes in showing that renewables have failed to reduce emissions, and everyone will be scratching their heads why. Green Weenies all around.
Yup.

Much has been written about the effects of toxic leaders in business, but a new study suggests that toxic business professors — specifically narcissists — wreak havoc in the classroom, at least for their more modest students. More narcissistic students, meanwhile, may benefit from having similarly self-obsessed instructors. The study’s authors argue that their findings have implications for instruction as a new generation of graduates seeks jobs in industry.
“Considering the evidence indicating significant increases in narcissism among millennials and even higher levels of narcissism among business students, we must work toward a greater understanding of the role of business higher education in stemming this tide,” the paper says. “As millennials enter the faculty ranks, will they be disproportionately narcissistic? … Will they be enhancing the employment prospects of our more narcissistic students to the detriment of their organizations and the business community?”
All that and a bag of chips.

David Cole takes a look behind the curtain.
There is a tendency among pundits to focus on political harm from the abortion issue only insofar as it affects Republicans. It’s generally believed that the issue is more of a minefield for the right than the left. And there’s some truth to that. However, a series of studies by a prominent academic suggests that the abortion issue adversely impacts the left in a way that’s actually deeper and more profound than the manner in which it affects the right.
Indeed. It is the Democrat base, not the Republican base, that is being reduced by abortion. Think about it: They are fighting for the right not to have children. From a long-term evolutionary perspective, that’s a self-correcting problem.
Martin Gilens is a political-science professor at Princeton. Over the course of the past decade, he has authored and coauthored several books and papers in which he argues that the U.S. is essentially an oligarchy. We are controlled by the moneymen, the “1%,” and any claim that our “democracy” is participatory or inclusive is illusory. “Affluence and influence”—that’s what makes the U.S. economic system go ’round. The deck is stacked, and the “liddle peeple” are powerless.
That certainly fits the available evidence.
Buried deep inside Gilens’ books and position papers is an interesting critique of the left…buried so deep that apparently none of Gilens’ leftist fawners ever found it (in covering Gilens’ work, liberal journos not only buried the lede, they sealed it in a sarcophagus). According to Gilens’ research, those dastardly oligarchs, those enemies of the 99%, are overwhelmingly liberal on issues such as abortion, gay rights, race, and immigration. In fact, the affluent are far more “progressive” than the great unwashed whose voices they’ve muted and whose influence they’ve suppressed. Gilens found that the superrich in general oppose any policies based upon “traditional morality” (Gilens uses school prayer as an example of an issue in which the oligarchs find themselves severely at odds with the poor).
That certainly fits the available evidence as well, although you’d never realize it from the hand-waving by Voices of the Crust.
Whereas Republicans get in trouble for saying idiotic things about abortion, women, and rape, Democrats have essentially sacrificed the economic portion of their agenda—something that used to be very important to them—on the altar of abortion rights and other SJW issues. Donald Trump (who is almost certainly not an actual enemy of the oligarchs and “banksters”) can talk about economic reforms to benefit the working class all he wants, but the left will never be on board because of his statements on Muslims, immigration, and (now) abortion. Bernie Sanders can talk about economic justice all he wants, but he’ll never attract the all-important black Democrat demographic because he’s not seen as sufficiently obsessed with racial issues.
Which seems to sum it up rather nicely. The Social Justice Warrior issues are ones that don’t affect the 1% wallet very much, whereas the traditional economic planks of the historical Democrat party would scare them shitless.
According to Zuesse, with whom I corresponded before and after he was dumped by the Huffington Post, the Daily Kos has similarly banned him. A left-wing fighter for economic justice, a progressive author trying to give a voice to the poor, a committed foe of the oligarchs, sacked and banned because he said something mean about a black guy. Behold the left’s priorities, in a nutshell.

New York, San Francisco, L.A. and Seattle are at the forefront of a new urban economy, based on industries such as finance, technology and media, that generally creates jobs for the highly educated only. Virtually every region at the cutting edge of the minimum wage movement has seen a rapid decline in traditional blue-collar jobs — notably in manufacturing — which often paid well above the minimum wage, and offered potential for further individual advancement.
In these and other core cities, we are seeing something reminiscent of the Victorian era, where a larger proportion of workers are earning their living serving the wealthy and their needs as nannies, restaurant workers, dog-walkers and the like. In New York City, as of 2012, over a third of workers were employed in low-wage service jobs, a percentage that rose through the recovery from the Great Recession, according to a study by the Center for an Urban Future. The largest growth in new jobs in NYC between 2009 and 2014 came primarily in low-wage fields. Of the 401,800 net jobs the city gained over that span, 76,400 were in food services and drinking establishments, with an average annual wage of $26,200. The sector that added the second largest number of jobs: ambulatory health care, at 55,400, with an average wage of $46,200. Meanwhile at the high-wage end of the spectrum, Wall Street employment was flat, and the glitzy fields of information services and movies and sound recording added 26,000 jobs.
What a $15 minimum wage in New York and California says is, ‘Unless you are rich enough to be able to pay your servants $15 an hour, we don’t want you here.’

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” George Santayana tells us.
The philosopher’s statement poses a unique problem for many top U.S. colleges, where students and faculty have pressed for some time to ensure that they never learn about their past in the first place.
The latest example is Stanford University, where an attempt is underway to suppress the recognition of Western civilization. Students at Stanford want to reinstate the subject as a core curriculum course. Some students are fighting it. The proposal is in the form of a ballot initiative that would require the faculty senate to debate whether the study of Western civilization should be reinstated.

And it’s hard to blame them.
Nobody has the ability to vote with his feet like an extremely wealthy person. New World Wealth, a South Africa-based research group that provides statistical information about the behavior of rich people around the world, released a new report that shows how that vote turned out in 2015, looking at which countries and cities are losing millionaires, and to which countries and cities they are moving.
The big winner is Australia. Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth all ranked among the top cities that have been drawing in millionaires.
Turning boat people back and not letting them land is undoubtedly a good part of that.
According to the report, wealthy folks are moving to Australia from other countries like China, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and even the United States. Other big winners are Dubai, Tel Aviv, and Vancouver. In America, big winners were San Francisco and Seattle.
Seattle and San Francisco are great towns in which to be rich. Middle class … not so much.

Freeberg in good form.
It is the polar opposite of the truth to say this trajectory has “only one shape and only one destination.” The trajectory meanders, turn by unprecedented turn and inch by serpentine inch, just like any other trajectory driven by emotion and drama. This year it’s all about forcing businesses to do away with male and female restrooms. Previously — just last year or so? — it was about same-sex marriage, and forcing the businesses to participate in that. Next year, who knows…although it will probably have something to do with forcing businesses to do something else. Frankly it’s become rather tiresome, not unlike taking a phone call from a friend who’s in the eleventh year of her divorce and has a whole new round of tall tales to unload about the awful things “Bob” did.

No, liberals do not approve of choice. They approve of force.
And they’re opposed to having any sort of discussion about it.
…
There is perhaps no subject on which this is made more clear, than with the economic issues that have to do with “equality” of income or wealth, like raising the minimum wage, progressive taxes, and social safety nets. Their narrative is not one of “We have come up with an innovative new way to make sure everyone has the same amount of stuff”; it is one of “We have come up with an innovative new way to get things back to the way they were supposed to be, so everyone has the same amount of stuff.” It’s an important distinction, because the latter interpretation is seasoned with a pungent hatred of humanity missing from the former.

Jim Goad is delightfully dyspeptic today.
Is it merely an accident that Brussels is simultaneously the capital of the European Union and Ground Zero for Islamic terror cells in Europe? And is it just an odd coincidence that almost without exception, modern progressives embrace the most egregiously sexist, patriarchal, and homophobic religion on Earth? No, because what unites the unelected EU bureaucrats who encourage open immigration and the deluded Marxists who welcome “migrants” with suicidally open arms is an unwavering moral conviction that everything innately European is evil to the core and needs to be exterminated.
