Six years ago, March E. Ratney was arrested after neighborhood residents told police he was riding a bike and firing a gun. When officers responded to the 911 calls, court documents say, Ratney called them pigs. He called one officer a “cracker.” The documents say he threatened to go to the officers’ homes and kill their families.
Ratney, 27, is now accused of trying to carry out a similar threat.
Ratney’s words from 2010 echo eerily now after police say he went to the home of an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer early Tuesday and fired more than a dozen shots at the officer’s home and police car.
The neck tattoo suggests what a fine, upstanding citizen he is.
Riggs said Ratney wore a T-shirt that, on the front, had the words, “F— the police.” On the back, he said, the shirt read, “Black Lives Matter,” a social justice movement that protests police shooting deaths of black men. The movement was born out of the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was accused in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teen.
Somebody is trying to start a race war in America, and it ain’t white people.

Censorious antics of ‘snowflake’ students have regularly made front-page news here in the UK. No longer. The momentous political fall-out from the June 23rd referendum, when a majority of citizens voted in favor of Britain leaving the European Union, has swept all other concerns aside. Whatever occurs in the coming months, whether ‘Brexit’ actually happens, or, as looks increasingly likely, the democratic will of the people is kicked into the long grass, the response to the referendum from within universities has had a devastating impact on academic freedom.
…
It would be difficult to imagine universities, in the run up to a general election, publicly articulating a preference for one party over another, or urging staff and students to vote a certain way. But this is what happened in the run up to the referendum. Universities UK (UUK), an umbrella group representing the collective interests of the British higher education sector, launched its Universities for Europe campaign in July 2015. Its aim was to demonstrate how ‘the EU strengthens our already world-class higher-education system’ and to ‘promote powerful evidence and highlight compelling stories about the benefits of European Union membership’.

Steven Hayward of Powerline blog shares his experience.
I spent the day in Chicago yesterday, where I lucked into my first ever up close up encounter with a Black Lives Matter march. (Photos nearby.) The throng blocked the intersection at Wacker Avenue and the Chicago River downtown right at the beginning of the evening rush hour. The police did nothing to disperse the crowd; to the contrary, they police enabled the march to proceed. One fellow got up in my face and said that my “silence is violence.” I suggested to him that he didn’t really want to see me when I’m noisy. I’ve got some video, too, but I have to board an airplane in a few minutes and it takes a while to post.
Chicago is, of course, run by Democrats, and has been time out of mind. If it’s a hotbed of racism, who’s to blame?

The Labor Department only classifies people as unemployed if they are actively looking for work. All those who don’t have a job and aren’t looking are lumped together under the fishy-sounding classification “not in the labor force.” The share of Americans not in the labor force has been climbing for nearly 15 years, a development that even many economists and demographers failed to anticipate.
It may sound like a giant mystery: What are these 92 million Americans doing? Actually, we do have some idea.
I notice that there’s a large contingent in the 16-20 year-old range who want work and can’t find it. Thank you, minimum wage.

A close look at the data (American Community Survey table B25071) reveals that renters are hardest hit in Florida, Hawai’i, California, and Oregon, all states with strong growth-management laws. (Florida weakened its law in 2011, but few if any regions have weakened their growth-management plans since then.) Meanwhile, rental housing is still very affordable in states such as Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin.
Hawai’i and California aren’t surprising, but it is a bit surprising to see Oregon near the top of the list. Oregon’s “smart-growth” policies were supposed to avoid this problem by building a lot of multifamily housing in place of the single-family housing that has been made unaffordable by the urban-growth boundaries around every city in the state. But this clearly hasn’t worked.

As a boomer, I have a special interest in millennials. It’s the same sort of interest I have in car wrecks: I don’t want to see what’s going on, but I can’t look away. Take, for instance, the cover story that Time magazine had a few months back about how millennials are raising their children. I didn’t read the article. I couldn’t, because the very first paragraph stopped me cold. Here it is, reproduced in full:
On a playground in San Francisco, 4-year-old Astral Defiance Hayes takes a stick and writes his name in the sand. His twin brother Defy Aster Hayes whizzes around their father.
The fact is, I don’t need to know anything more about how millennials are parenting than that two of them thought it was a great idea to name their twin boys Astral Defiance and Defy Aster.
I mean: Who does that?
‘Good morning. Name?’
‘Astral Defiance Hayes.’
(askance look) ‘Astral Defiance?’
‘Yeah.’
(snigger) ‘Parents did a lot of weed, did they?’

With printed books,
- You can buy one with cash, anonymously.
- Then you own it.
- You are not required to sign a license that restricts your use of it.
- The format is known, and no proprietary technology is needed to read the book.
- You can give, lend or sell the book to another.
- You can, physically, scan and copy the book, and it’s sometimes lawful under copyright.
- Nobody has the power to destroy your book.
Contrast that with Amazon e-books (fairly typical):
- Amazon requires users to identify themselves to get an e-book.
- In some countries, including the US, Amazon says the user cannot own the e-book.
- Amazon requires the user to accept a restrictive license on use of the e-book.
- The format is secret, and only proprietary user-restricting software can read it at all.
- An ersatz “lending” is allowed for some books, for a limited time, but only by specifying by name another user of the same system. No giving or selling.
- To copy the e-book is impossible due to Digital Restrictions Management in the player and prohibited by the license, which is more restrictive than copyright law.
- Amazon can remotely delete the e-book using a back door. It used this back door in 2009 to delete thousands of copies of George Orwell’s 1984.
Even one of these infringements makes e-books a step backward from printed books. We must reject e-books until they respect our freedom.

Thursday’s attack that killed five police officers in Dallas — inspired by the hate group “Black Lives Matter” — was part of an ongoing wave of violent racial terrorism targeting American law enforcement. In Tennessee, a police officer was wounded Thursday in a gun battle with a man who went on a shooting spree that apparently targeted white people, in which one woman was killed and two other people were injured.

In my reading and writing on the history of eugenics (here, here, and here), I’ve begun to discern a common trait between the people called environmentalists and racists from a century ago.
They share a common outlook that is illiberal to its core. They imagine that a wise and powerful state can better plan a future for both nature and man. Both groups were panicked about unplanned progress, assuming it could only resort in degeneration, mongrelization, and destruction. They dreamed of a future in which they and not the unwashed masses would be in charge of how resources are used and how the human race propagates itself.
What we call ‘environmentalism’ would have been considered right-wing verging on ‘reactionary’ in any century other than this one (1916-2016).

The FBI’s recommendation against the prosecution of Hillary Clinton for her wanton, illegal mishandling of classified information in her emails puts on display once again the reality of the so-called rule of law in the USA. This reality is, above all, that the system is trifurcated: there is effectively one set of rules for the great mass of white, middle-class citizens; another set for blacks, Mexicans, and poor whites; and, most notably, another set for the powerful and connected members of the ruling elite.
…
L’affaire d’Hillary, in contrast, shows that the system’s kingpins are pretty much above the laws, even the laws that they themselves have made and purport to enforce equally without fear or favor. The Clintons appear for all the world, and long have appeared, as a free-range criminal family with far-reaching elite connections—who’s to say what is bribe and what is shakedown?—amounting to what might well be described with a nod to Lady Macbeth herself as “a vast left-wing conspiracy.” So even when the FBI itself has the pelotas to report in great detail on Hillary’s law-breaking, it takes upon itself the pronouncement that a prosecutor would not have a case against her.

Just to be clear, that’s ‘films about medieval society’, not ‘films made in medieval times’.
Well before any of us went to school and learned about the Middle Ages through academic text books, our conception of the era was probably established through more non-academic means, namely literature and film. It is impossible to know with the precision needed to create a film what the Middle Ages actually looked like. Thus, filmmakers more often than not, fall back on inaccurate tropes that we have come to equate with the Middle Ages, but which are really romantic constructs of the 19th century. And it is this very type of ahistoricism, according to historian Arthur Lindley, which obscures the reality of the Middle Ages and sentimentalizes it in a way that denies it any real independent existence. Filmmaker Andrew Elliot also noted that scholars are upset with Hollywood because, as he describes it, of the ‘filmmaker’s audacity to infringe on the serious scholarly domain of the Middle Ages.’ But if this is the way most people are exposed to the Middle Ages, then it behoves us to acknowledge medieval film as an important area of scholarship.

One of the little publicized (at least in American media) complaints by U.S. allies in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq is the growing use of lawyers and media consultants to determine who American warplanes can attack. Local civilians noticed, especially in Afghanistan where civilians complained about this first in 2009 when they were told that the reason American bombers and armed helicopters were allowing more of the Taliban to escape was because of the need to consult lawyers first to ensure that the attack was “legal” (not likely to be interpreted as a “war crime” if any civilians got hurt.) Most of the complaints, which appeared in Afghan media but rarely anywhere else, were made by rural civilians being terrorized by constant Taliban violence. Worse, the Taliban soon became aware of the new rules and quickly developed tactics to exploit the rules to obtain maximum immunity from air attack. This information spread quickly (via the Internet) to other Islamic terror groups. The civilian victims of these terror groups eventually figured it out as well but no one paid much attention to that.

Same day registration and other liberal “reforms” have made it easy for ineligible voters to cast ballots in many states. When law-abiding citizens point out that liberal policies enable voter fraud, the left’s response is always that 1) voter fraud hardly ever happens, so 2) you must be a racist. Typically subtle liberal argumentation.
Here in Minnesota, a case is pending in our Supreme Court that challenges same day registration and various actions by our Democratic Secretary of State that have enabled illegal voting.
…
The lawyers representing plaintiffs in the case have done a great deal of digging, and have come up with names, dates and places–illegal votes that likely swung Minnesota elections toward Democratic candidates.
Funny how there are never allegations of voter fraud benefitting Republicans. I wonder why that is.
Minnesota’s Secretary of State, Steve Simon, has tried to frustrate investigation into illegal voting by refusing to turn over either to polling places or to the plaintiffs in the lawsuit the complete list, which the state maintains, of those who have lost their voting rights. It is hard to see any possible reason why this list should be a secret, other than the Democrats’ desire that convicted felons, who overwhelmingly vote their way, get away with voting illegally.
No news there. Think of a tattooed gang-banger sitting in a cell. Think he’s going to vote for a Republican? The question answers itself.

After a jury ruled that Cinemark was not responsible for the 2012 massacre in Aurora, Colorado, the owner of the movie theater is seeking $700,000 from the victims of the mass shooting.
The original lawsuit made by the victims’ families argued that the chain should have provided more security to prevent the shooter from killing 12 people and injuring 70 others during the airing of The Dark Knight rises. Cinemark would go on to win the case on June 24.
Now, Cinemark has filed a “bill of costs” against the families requesting $699,187.13, The Denver Post reports. Under Colorado law, winners of civil cases are allowed to recover litigation costs.

An open letter today signed by 100 Nobel Prize Laureates calls upon the anti-technology activist group “Greenpeace to cease and desist in its campaign against Golden Rice specifically, and crops and foods improved through biotechnology in general.” The laureates point out that “scientific and regulatory agencies around the world have repeatedly and consistently found crops and foods improved through biotechnology to be as safe as, if not safer than those derived from any other method of production. There has never been a single confirmed case of a negative health outcome for humans or animals from their consumption. Their environmental impacts have been shown repeatedly to be less damaging to the environment, and a boon to global biodiversity.”
The laureates specifically demand that Greenpeace stop its attacks on Golden Rice which has been genetically enhanced to produce a vitamin A precursor as a way to prevent millions of deaths and cases of blindness annually in poor countries where the grain is the chief food staple. Vitamin A deficiency causes blindness in between 250,000 and 500,000 children each year, half of whom die within 12 months, according to the World Health Organization. A study by German researchers in 2014 estimated that activist opposition to the deployment of Golden Rice has resulted in the loss of 1.4 million life-years in just India alone.

At least five people were stabbed in a statehouse skirmish between members of the white-nationalist Traditionalist Workers Party (TWP) and “anti-fascist” activists from a group called By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). The white-power group had gotten a permit and was demonstrating in front of the California capitol. BAMN members came brandishing wooden bats and shouting “fuck fascists. Beat the fascists. Beat them.” One member Yvette Felarca told CNN she was “very, very proud” of the counter-protest that had produced such violence.

Nothing stirs the passions of Democrats these days quite like the prospect of gutting the Constitution. In an unprecedented act of pretend political bravery, House members held a catered sit-in, demanding that Republicans allow a vote to strip away protections of Second, Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution. It was quite the scene.
There were the selfie-happy Democrats singing “We Shall Overcome” while demanding passage of a bill that those right-wing nutjobs over at the American Civil Liberties Union have “strongly” argued would undermine civil liberties. As of this writing, no participant has been beaten down by the cops or thrown into a dank cell, although iPhones were probably getting perilously low on juice for those who’d forgotten their chargers.
On its surface this sounds ridiculous, and to any rational impartial observer it is — invoking classic tactics and tropes of the Civil Rights movement in support of measures attempting to infringe Constitutional rights. But Democrats can’t be fazed by the cart being in front of the horse; they don’t even see it. Modern Democrats are ‘progressives’, and ‘progressives’ MUST have change, because without change there is no progress; hence the Constitution, which stands in the way of change, must be eroded until it is gone, gone, gone.
Civil rights-era heroes like Rep. John Lewis, who lent his considerable legacy to this vacuous grandstanding, was once on the terror watch list himself. He didn’t know how he got on it. He didn’t know how to get off of it. Yet, today he believes this Kafkaesque system is a sound way to deny his fellow citizens their rights.
I am perfectly comfortable with Congressman Lewis being on a terrorist watch list, considering some of the idiotic initiatives to which he has lent his support since he started coasting to fame and fortune on his Civil Rights record. That doesn’t mean that he ought to lose his right to keep and bear arms.

Prohibition was kneecapped by Americans’ widespread refusal to stop producing, selling, and drinking booze. Millions of Americans smoked marijuana decades before majority sentiment creeped toward legalizing the stuff. Gays and lesbians not only surreptitiously lived and loved when they were targeted by the law—they also famously (and righteously) stomped cops who raided the Stonewall Inn, ultimately precipitating liberalization. And restrictions on exporting encryption were eased only after cryptographers illegally exported code—even printing it on T-shirts as an act of civil disobedience.
Those who have a touchingly naive faith in the power of government cling to the conviction that Passing A Law will solve a problem, automagically. If that were true, then there wouldn’t be a War on Drugs.
“Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families and explain why that makes sense,” President Obama tut-tutted last week. But the moralizer-in-chief failed to make sense himself, calling for the outlawing of a category of devices that doesn’t really exist.
The failure of Obama to actually connect with reality is almost universal.
That gun owners mean what they say in the “assault weapons” context can be inferred from the 5 percent compliance rate achieved by New York’s recent registration requirement for such firearms. Or from the 15 percent compliance rate in neighboring Connecticut.
…
When New Jersey went a step further and banned the sale and possession of “assault weapons,” 947 people registered their rifles as sporting guns for target shooting, 888 rendered them inoperable, and four surrendered them to the police. That’s out of an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 firearms affected by the law. The New York Times concluded, a bit drily, “More than a year after New Jersey imposed the toughest assault-weapons law in the country, the law is proving difficult if not impossible to enforce.”

In my professional opinion, one shooter would have had a very hard time inflicting the amount of casualties we saw at Pulse Nightclub.
…
Yet there is no indication that the terrorist possessed that level of athleticism or ever even visited a shooting range. And he only purchased the guns used a short time before the shooting. He was not very familiar with them. In terms of accepted and recognized training doctrine, he was a step one beginner.
…
A Sig Sauer MCX, fires a 5.56mm NATO round, or its .223 caliber civilian variant. Magazines typically hold either 20 or 30 rounds depending on your preference. If ballistics determines this to be the primary weapon used in the attack, that would imply a minimum of four to five reloads without any patrons attempting to stop the shooter. But again, that would also imply a nearly 100 percent accuracy rate. Something unheard of even for those aforementioned world class shooters.
…
A Glock 17 has a magazine capacity of 17 rounds plus one chambered for an 18 round total. If this firearm is determined to be the primary weapon used, that would imply five reloads under stress and again, accuracy rates not achievable by the best CQB marksmen on the planet. It would also imply a consistent level of efficacy from the nine millimeter round never before recorded.
…
Now, assuming the terrorist’s marksmanship and tactical ability rivaled that of the typical NYC police officer shooting under stress, that would suggest that he would have been carrying at least 500 rounds of ammunition, or 20 to 25 magazines of minimum. This in addition to a rifle and handgun. And it would also assume that he was able to carry all of that gear dressed in a way that would not have raised suspicion on a hot June evening/early morning in Florida.
The current “lone wolf” narrative is asking me and others with related experience to suspend belief and plausibility to a level at which I am extremely uncomfortable. When you eliminate all plausible explanations in an investigation, you begin asking other questions.

When drivers stopped at the intersection try to give him money, they have to take off their seat belts to reach across the seat. A few minutes later, another officer pulls the drivers over and hands each a $175 ticket for a seat belt violation.
That’ll teach ’em.

Misty Lee Wilke, who was charged with attempting to commit second-degree murder in the April 29 incident, slammed her red Mustang into the cyclist after finding out he was HIV-positive. Surveillance video shows Wilke hitting the man with such force that he flips over the car. After she hits the man, she continues to drive away.
Can’t say that I blame her.

Steve Sailer understands the dialectic.
The latest Muslim massacre has driven the mainstream media absolutely berserk with fear and loathing…but not, though, of the Muslim terrorist who murdered 49 Latino gays in Florida. Instead, the bad guy is Donald Trump for having been demonstrated to be right about immigration policy.
…
Of course, Trump’s pragmatism was also calibrated to drive mad with rage the bipartisan Washington establishment that has grown rich off the conventional wisdom of Invade the World/Invite the World.

As MEE notes, the Petra News Agency published on Sunday what it described as exclusive comments from Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman which included a claim that Riyadh has provided 20 percent of the total funding to the prospective Democratic candidate’s campaign.
Which is illegal, of course, not that Hillary cares.

And if Democrats introduce legislation to that effect, expect gun purchases to spike yet again.
I ought to have bought gun-maker stocks when Obama became President; I could have retired sooner.

On CNN and Fox News, one politician after another professed to be “shocked” by the massacre in Orlando. “Who would have expected such a thing?” people kept asking. Actually, I’ve been expecting just such a thing for years. The only shock was that it took this long for some jihadist to go after a gay establishment.
Islamic law, after all, is crystal clear on homosexuality, though the various schools of sharia prescribe a range of penalties: one calls for death by stoning; another demands that the transgressor be thrown from a high place; a third says to drop a building on him. In Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Yemen, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, as well as in parts of Nigeria, Somalia, Syria and Iraq, homosexuality is indeed punishable by death.
And yet homosexuals and feminists give Muslims a pass that they wouldn’t give their own countrymen. Gee, I wonder why?
Incredibly, many gays still don’t get this—or refuse to get it. They cling—mindlessly, one wants to say—to leftist ideology, which tells them that Muslims, like gays, are an official victim group, and thus their natural allies. They see Christians as their enemies—though even the most aggressively antigay Christians in America, namely the “God hates fags” crowd at the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, don’t go around killing anybody. Perversely, some gays support the BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement, which demonizes the only gay-friendly country in the Middle East. Some even buy into the concept of “pinkwashing”—the inane assertion, promoted by radical lesbian playwright Sarah Schulman, that Israel advertises its own gay-positive values as a means of covering up its supposed oppression of Palestinians. On this day of horror, let’s hope that the jihadist massacre of 50 people in a gay club in Orlando finally awakens gay Americans to the brutal reality of Islam’s hatred for them.

Jim Goad is fed up.
The most feral and violent contingent of anti-Trump protestors appears to consist of unabashed Mexican supremacists falsely accusing Trump of being a white supremacist. They are so irreparably dim that they appear to believe that by stomping on cars, throwing rocks at police, and sucker-punching white people, they will finally quell all doubt about whether they deserve to be here.
Who knows? In these degenerate modern times, they may be right.
Behold the parallel-universe specter of hateful assholes hatefully screaming and hatefully attacking people while toting placards that read STOP THE HATE. Even more absurd is the specter of people who ran screaming from the flaming abyss that is Mexico proudly waving Mexican flags in the USA.
Such is the world we live in.
San Jose’s police chief Eddie Garcia told his men not to intervene in the violence. He implausibly claimed that 250 cops were unable to handle an estimated 400 rioters. He is also, as luck would have it, a proud supporter of La Raza. In other words, a Latino cop who supports a pro-Mexican racial-identity group told his men to stand and watch while Mexicans beat up white people. San Jose’s Latino mayor blamed the violence on Trump rather than the actual perpetrators of the violence.
Welcome to Mexifornia.
The question begs itself, and I’m hardly the first to ask it: If you’re so proud of Mexico and America maltreats you so horribly, why are you here?

As a climate skeptic I couldn’t care less about recycling, carbon footprints, “lights on” Earth Hour, or any of the other claptrap associated with the green religion. But the breathtakingly wasteful lifestyle choices of the allegedly green “Millennials” put my efforts to enjoy the advantages of consumerist living to shame.
Sure, it’s fun to slag on Millenials, but they grew up in a world far different from those who love to beat on them. My generation ate cereal for breakfast because it was less work than a cooked breakfast, which was the only alternative. (No Egg McMuffin’s in the ’50s.) Millenials are making the same choices, but with a different range of options. I can get the cereal box out, get out a bowl, pour the cereal into the bowl, get out the milk, pour the milk on the cereal, put the milk back in the fridge, get out a spoon, sit down, eat the cereal, put the bowl and spoon on the counter or in the dishwasher OR I can grab an Egg McMuffin (or — shudder — a ‘breakfast taco’), eat it while travelling or doing something else, and throw the wrapper in the trash. The difference in convenience is the same as the difference between a fixed land-line phone versus a cell phone.
