Generosity, in this egotistical world, is perceived as weakness, and therefore rewarded with disdain. This is the problem of the welfare state—largely funded by white men—in regard to blacks and women, both full of envy, and neither ever to be satisfied. Consider the video about “white privilege” that has been circulating widely on social media. Representative of the authoritarian sentimentalism of our time, it features a number of young people—whites and blacks—about to run a race, with the winner to get a hundred-dollar bill. The implication, of course, is that life itself is a race, and one’s value as a person determined by status: a kind of vulgar idolatry that, I have argued, is modernity’s stand-in for its dead God. With trite, would-be touching music playing, and close-ups of happy young white people juxtaposed to those of sad young blacks, this video is a cynical and disingenuous vehicle of resentment. It is just the sort of thing that leftists employ to effect the revenge that they call “social justice.” The runners are asked several questions to determine their “privilege.” After giving their answers, they are told to take several steps forward, their “privilege” signifying a heartrending “injustice” to blacks. At least this experiment did not occur in an inner city, where the evil whites might have been shot.

Not so long ago, mere mention of the deliberate murder of whites in South Africa—country folk and commercial farmers, in particular—was called “racist.” “Raaacist!” the media collective brayed when candidate Trump retweeted a related “white genocide” hashtag.

It’s still “racist” to suggest that the butchering of these whites, almost daily, in ways that beggar belief, is racially motivated. Positively scandalous is it to describe the ultimate goal of a killing spree, now in its third decade, thus: the ethnic cleansing of white, farming South Africa from land the community has cultivated since the 1600s.

A group of students at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, did something so outrageous, so transgressive, that it has roiled the campus and led to newspaper headlines: they posted signs on campusthat say, “It’s OK to be white.”

You might think that in a campus environment where a thousand genders are blooming, you could finish a sentence beginning “It’s OK to be…” in just about any possible manner. But you would be wrong.

One day last year, a citizen on a prairie path in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst came upon a teen boy chopping wood. Not a body. Just some already-fallen branches. Nonetheless, the onlooker called the cops.

Officers interrogated the boy, who said he was trying to build a fort for himself and his friends. A local news site reports the police then “took the tools for safekeeping to be returned to the boy’s parents.”

Elsewhere in America, preschoolers at the Learning Collaborative in Charlotte, North Carolina, were thrilled to receive a set of gently used playground equipment. But the kids soon found out they would not be allowed to use it, because it was resting on grass, not wood chips. “It’s a safety issue,” explained a day care spokeswoman. Playing on grass is against local regulations.

And then there was the query that ran in Parents magazine a few years back: “Your child’s old enough to stay home briefly, and often does. But is it okay to leave her and her playmate home while you dash to the dry cleaner?” Absolutely not, the magazine averred: “Take the kids with you, or save your errand for another time.” After all, “you want to make sure that no one’s feelings get too hurt if there’s a squabble.”

The principle here is simple: This generation of kids must be protected like none other. They can’t use tools, they can’t play on grass, and they certainly can’t be expected to work through a spat with a friend.

And this, it could be argued, is why we have “safe spaces” on college campuses and millennials missing adult milestones today. We told a generation of kids that they can never be too safe—and they believed us.

In excerpts from her upcoming book, Ms. Brazile said she was shocked at the sorry condition of the DNC’s finances when she took over in July 2016 for embattled Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whom she said was “not a good manager.”

Kaha Miah, 20, and a 16-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons threw the corrosive substance at the victims after they approached a group of young people who were kicking their cars in the east London borough of Tower Hamlets.

After realising one of the vehicles was his, one of the victims went to confront the group and fearful for his friend’s safety, the other victim ran downstairs to join his friend, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said in a statement.

After a brief confrontation the teenage attacker took a bottle out of his bag, unscrewed the top and passed it to Miah, who unscrewed the bottle fully and said: “Have some acid”.

He then threw the contents into the faces of the two victims.

Papa John’s International Inc. founder John Schnatter is going after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, saying weak handling of the league’s national-anthem controversy has hammered sales of his pizza.

“The NFL has hurt us by not resolving the current debacle to the players’ and owners’ satisfaction,” Schnatter, who serves as the pizza chain’s chairman and chief executive officer, said on a conference call. “NFL leadership has hurt Papa John’s shareholders.”

If we were to update that graying motto in 2017, it might read “Think National, Act Stupid”—at least judging by the New York General Election Voter Guide, which plopped into my mailbox late last week like a sack of wet cardboard. The nonpartisan pamphlet, presented as a cheerful paean to civic involvement, is instead a festival of bad policy ideas frequently untethered to the job descriptions or even jurisdictions of the offices under competition.

“We’ve got to do more to make sure working families can afford to live in New York—and that means focusing on housing costs and the quality of our public schools, and creating more good-paying jobs,” writes New York City’s incumbent, uh, comptroller. (To the surprise of no one, Democrat/Working Families candidate Scott Stringer believes that the best way to create those good-paying jobs is to adopt a $15 minimum wage, a policy that has produced opposite results elsewhere.)

You might not have heard of Compassion & Choices or seen it on the rack at your local big-box store. This publication, after all, is solely dedicated to advocacy in support of doctor-assisted suicide. The article itself is a look back at how the organization brought Ramos into the fold and got him to run an interview on a Hispanic brain cancer patient that wanted to die.

Documents filed in Federal court Monday allege that Nathaniel D. Nelson, an employee of the majority black Concord Fortress of Hope Church in Kansas City, Mo., defaced the church with racist graffiti, including a racial slur against black people, and set fire to a chair inside a church office Sunday to conceal his initial crime of stealing money from the church to buy crack cocaine, according to The Kansas City Star. Nelson worked as a maintenance man for the church, and allegedly broke into a vending machine and the church financial office, according to KSHB-TV.

As usual, when there’s a “shortage,” some sort of government intervention in the free market is nearby: the end of “milk quotas” in the European Union in 2015. I can see someone arguing that the cause of the shortage wasn’t the quotas but the repeal of them, but that seems like a stretch.

A Voice of the Crust points the finger.

The roots of the current American predicament go back to the 1970s, when wages of workers stopped keeping pace with their productivity. The two curves diverged: Productivity continued to rise, as wages stagnated. The “great divergence” between the fortunes of the top 1 percent and the other 99 percent is much discussed, yet its implications for long-term political disorder are underappreciated. Battles such as the recent government shutdown are only one manifestation of what is likely to be a decade-long period.

Unexplained: Why wages ought to increase with productivity. Wages are a function of the supply of qualified employees; productivity is a function of the use of capital technology used in the enterprise. There is no obvious connection between the two, which makes it incumbent on the writer to describe what that connection might be. Since the object of the article is to cast blame rather than educate, that ball is dropped.

How does growing economic inequality lead to political instability? Partly this correlation reflects a direct, causal connection. High inequality is corrosive of social cooperation and willingness to compromise, and waning cooperation means more discord and political infighting. Perhaps more important, economic inequality is also a symptom of deeper social changes, which have gone largely unnoticed.

High economic inequality is corrosive of social cooperation on when there are large numbers of people who believe that economic inequality is somehow illegitimate; typically these are zero-sum thinkers who feel that if X has more than Y than X somehow cheated Y out of Y’s just deserts. Increasing inequality leads not only to the growth of top fortunes; it also results in greater numbers of wealth-holders. The “1 percent” becomes “2 percent.” Or even more. There are many more millionaires, multimillionaires and billionaires today compared with 30 years ago, as a proportion of the population.

Sign of good times? No, according to the zero-summers: sign of massive cheating, in their view.

Rich Americans tend to be more politically active than the rest of the population. They support candidates who share their views and values; they sometimes run for office themselves. Yet the supply of political offices has stayed flat (there are still 100 senators and 435 representatives — the same numbers as in 1970). In technical terms, such a situation is known as “elite overproduction.”

(‘Know as’ to whom? In what field of study is this a ‘technical term’? I think he just made it up to sound authoritative.) Rich people are more politically active because they have been, for time out of mind, targets of the envious, who use the levers of political power (when they can) to make rich people less rich. Anybody with property is a sheep ripe for shearing in the view of, say, the Democrat party and its ‘base’. If I were rich, I’d be ‘politically active’, too, the same way I’d carry a gun. There are a mob of people out there who are only too willing to take what you have, if you have more than they do.

Star Parker, a former Democrat who previously “believed all the lies of the left,” now decries the division and race-consciousness expanding across America, even after the country elected its first black president.

While America could be more united, Parker says the “perception of racism has become big business” as America’s liberal black leaders “shake down corporations for billions of dollars,” divide America by skin color and reject Dr. Martin Luther King’s goal of making skin color irrelevant.

The “lies of the left” Parker previously believed included “the poor are poor because the wealthy are wealthy, that my problems were somebody else’s fault and that America was racist.” Her beliefs, she says, fueled a reckless lifestyle, including criminal behavior, drugs, sexual activity and welfare dependency. A life-changing Christian conversion gave her a new set of eyes, values and a commitment to wake up others to freedom that are trapped in welfare dependency.

The solution to the present problem of North Korea seems obvious–we should have invaded them a little more than a decade ago, just before they developed nuclear weapons. It looks like the modern version of the lesson of Munich: Britain and France should have opposed Hitler early, when he was still weak, instead of going along with the annexation of the Sudetenland. More generally, it is the argument for a foreign policy of figuring out early who are going to be your enemies and opposing them before they get strong enough to be dangerous.

That argument assumes that your nation not only will have an interventionist foreign policy, it will do it right. The U.S. has an interventionist foreign policy, as demonstrated in, among other places, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It had one in 2006. It did not do anything serious to prevent North Korea from obtaining the ability to drop a nuclear weapon on the U.S. because the cost of invading North Korea would have been large and immediate, the cost of not doing it more than two elections away. The benefits of an interventionist foreign policy conducted by a government no more competent at it than ours is are much less than the Munich argument implies.

The Virginia church that George Washington attended for two decades plans to tear out a memorial to the nation’s first president because the plaque could make some worshipers feel “unsafe or unwelcome.”

“The plaques in our sanctuary make some in our presence feel unsafe or unwelcome,” the church leaders said, according to the Washington Times. “Some visitors and guests who worship with us choose not to return because they receive an unintended message from the prominent presence of the plaques.”

Energy Builders’ launch of the Energy Infrastructure Incident Reporting Center (EIRC) comes two days after more than 80 members of Congress signed a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions concerned with pipeline disruption. The letter decried the “violence toward individuals and destruction of property” associated with some activist activities aimed at stopping pipelines.

“Incidents of eco-terrorism, sabotage, arson, vandalism and violence are on the rise as criminal tactics have become a regular feature of pipeline protests, leaving taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars and potentially endangering lives, the environment and our national security,” said Toby Mack, president and CEO of EEIA.

That will be an eye-opener.
