Good for Google, Bad for America

2nd August 2019

Peter Thiel blows the whistle.

A.I. is a military technology. Forget the sci-fi fantasy; what is powerful about actually existing A.I. is its application to relatively mundane tasks like computer vision and data analysis. Though less uncanny than Frankenstein’s monster, these tools are nevertheless valuable to any army — to gain an intelligence advantage, for example, or to penetrate defenses in the relatively new theater of cyberwarfare, where we are already living amid the equivalent of a multinational shooting war.

UPDATE: NYT posts anti-google rant, doesn’t mention the author is Facebook board member

The Return to Serfdom

29th July 2019

Joel Kotkin.

I’m not a free-market fundamentalist. To me, the beauty of liberal capitalism lies in its performance: More people live well, and live longer, than ever before. Millions of working-class people have moved from poverty to become homeowners and have seen their offspring rise into the middle class or higher.

Today this egalitarian capitalist progress is showing signs of fading, not only in the United States but also in Europe, Australia, and increasingly East Asia. This marks a drastic reversal from the conditions that prevailed after World War II, when the incomes of those in the lower quintile surged by roughly 40 percent, while the gains in those in the top quintile grew a modest 8 percent, and the top 5 percent saw their incomes drop slightly. Social mobility since the 1990s has declined dramatically, not only in the United States but also throughout Europe, including Sweden. Despite the European Union’s vaunted welfare state, the middle class has shrunk in more than two-thirds of the countries there.

“I Don’t See How We’ll Survive” – Rising Minimum Wage Squeezes California Restaurants

27th July 2019

Read it.

Democrats in Washington are trying to push through a bill to raise the federal minimum wage, but around the country dozens of cities and states raised the wage floor at the beginning of the year. And like clockwork, small businesses across the country are already struggling with some of the issues that conservatives warned about. To wit, many businesses, particularly restaurants, which are notoriously low-margin businesses, have been forced to lay off employees, even after raising prices to meet the new wage requirements.

The Banana Trick and Other Acts of Self-Checkout Thievery

27th July 2019

Read it.

Self-checkout theft has become so widespread that a whole lingo has sprung up to describe its tactics. Ringing up a T-bone ($13.99/lb) with a code for a cheap ($0.49/lb) variety of produce is “the banana trick.” If a can of Illy espresso leaves the conveyor belt without being scanned, that’s called “the pass around.” “The switcheroo” is more labor-intensive: Peel the sticker off something inexpensive and place it over the bar code of something pricey. Just make sure both items are about the same weight, to avoid triggering that pesky “unexpected item” alert in the bagging area.

Presumably the money saved in labor cost is enough to compensate for such ‘shrinkage’. I have my doubts.

Engineer: Google News Top 20 Results Are All Left-Wing

26th July 2019

Read it.

Google engineer Greg Coppola, who was suspended by his company for speaking to Project Veritas, published a July 25 post on Medium analyzing Google News. Coppola re-enacted a project done by PJ Media’s Paula Boylard in order to demonstrate Google’s liberal manipulation of its algorithms. Using what he called “data science,” Coppola found that the top 20 sites most relied on by Google News were all liberal.

Not really news but a useful reminder.

The top five sites were CNN, USA Today, The New York Times, Politico, and the Guardian. None of these sites are conservative or even bipartisan in their approach to news. The other sites include the New Yorker, Deadline, HuffPost, CNBC, Newsweek, Vox, The Associated Press, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, ABC News, The Hill, and Salon. Not one of them could ever be accused of leaning right. In fact, most are bastions of left-wing hackery.

Up to 150 migrants feared dead after boats capsize near Libya

25th July 2019

Read it.

Used to be that ‘migrants’ could depend on Eurotrash NGOs and their ‘rescue’ ships to pick them up once they were out of Libyan territorial waters and take them to some Mediterranean port, so all they had to do was find something that would float and stay afloat for 3 miles.

Now that European governments are falling into the hands of nationalists who don’t want their countries invaded by Turd World ‘migrants’, that trick is no longer working, and ‘refugees’ are discovering that the usual minimal-flotation jury-rigs provided by the cartels who arrange their ‘migrations’ for a hefty fee aren’t good enough to make it all the way across.

Notes from a nameless conference

24th July 2019

Read it.

The industrial elites have lost their way. In every major profession and institution, they once commanded vast, widely-admired projects that filled their lives with meaning and endowed the entire class with an unconquerable confidence. But the twentieth century couldn’t be preserved forever, like a bug in amber. The elites now face a radically transformed environment – and they are maladapted and demoralized. An inability to listen, an impulse to spew jargon in broadcast mode, a demand for social distance as the reward for professional success: such habits, which in the past placed them above and beyond the mob’s reach, now drag them down to contempt and mockery in the information sphere. Among the public, trust has curdled into loathing. The elites are horribly aware of their fall from grace – hence the conference – but being deaf to the public’s voice, they are clueless about how to respond.

Race Hoaxster and State Representative Erica Thomas Now Wants the Police to Charge the Man Who Did Not Properly Defer to His Racial Superior

And, second tweet — the New York Times headline blares that she says this guy (who is super anti-Trump, and anti-Trump’s statements about immigration, btw) told her to “go back where she came from,” but then, in the fourteenth (14th!) paragraph, concedes that she walked that back and said “I don’t want to say [that he said that]” and changes her claim to “he was making that type of reference.”

I want her to make formal charges (of what? Who knows) and swear under penalty of perjury as to what she’s claiming he said.

Greece, Then and Now

19th July 2019

Taki is delightfully dyspeptic today.

Standing right below the Acropolis, where pure democracy began because public officials were elected by lot, I try to imagine if random political selection today would be a good thing. The answer is a resounding yes. Both Socrates and Aristotle questioned fundamental norms and values, and if they lived today they would certainly question the acceptance by us of career politicians who have never had any other profession. (Corbyn, Biden, I could go on.) Socrates was skeptical about many things, especially the arts, because he believed they led us away from the truth. Yet so-called “artists” today influence public opinion as never before. Even numbskull rappers have a say and can alter public opinion, hence election by lot should be a must.

Ilhan Omar: Incest and Polyandry

19th July 2019

Read it.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is not really incestuous or polyandrous — the alleged marriage to her brother was never more than a scam, presumably to advance his immigration status. Her main squeeze, whom she belatedly married, was not her husband when she falsely filed joint tax returns with him. So there was no bigamy, just plain old tax fraud.

For the rest of this post, readers are asked to mentally insert the word “alleged” in front of any description of a crime or potential crime. Except for the fraudulent tax returns — which are documented in the public record — Rep. Omar has not been convicted of any crime, so the “alleged”s are de rigueur. Nor has she been investigated for any of the other crimes, as far as I know. Since she is a Woke Woman of Color, and a Muslim to boot, she generally gets a free pass.

Mizzou Received $5 Million to Hire Austrian Economists. A Lawsuit Claims It Misspent the Money.

16th July 2019

Read it.

This should come as no surprise to anybody.

Sherlock Hibbs, a wealthy Wall Street financier with ties to the University of Missouri, died in 2002. A fan of free market economics, the Austrian School, and Ludwig von Mises in particular, Hibbs specified in his will that $5 million would go to the university for the purposes of hiring “dedicated and articulate disciples” of this philosophy.

There was an interesting catch. If Mizzou failed to use the money to fund acolytes of Mises, the donation would instead go to Hillsdale College, a conservative institution in Michigan. Hibbs seemingly did not trust Mizzou to fulfill his terms and thus structured the gift so that an ideologically sympathetic college would have an incentive to hold the Mizzou accountable.

Hibbs was apparently right to worry. Hillsdale is now suing Mizzou, and alleges that the university willfully misspent the funds on faculty members who have nothing to do with either von Mises or Austrian economics.

Trudeau did a series of Doonesbury cartoons on this very subject.

I don’t know why he didn’t just cut to the chase and give the money to Hillsdale.

The Dangerous Rise Of The Woke Corporation

15th July 2019

Joel Kotkin sounds the alarm.

In the 20th century most business leaders were predictably conservative. Big money aligned with their class allies in the “party of property,” and some of those elements still back Donald Trump and conservative causes. Left-wing politics were left to their unions, academics and parts of the media.

But over the last twenty years most of the oligarchy — whose firms are overwhelmingly non-union — have embraced the progressive social and environmental agenda. The clear majority of wealthy donors support the Democratic Party while vast majority of the ultra-rich foundations — funded by the offspring of the Rockefellers and the Fords based on fossil fuels — now all tilt well to the left.

So deep-seated is gentry progressivism that a company like Nike quickly sides with a mediocre NFL quarterback who has worn socks showing police as pigs over an iconic image from the country’s founding. This could be one way that company, which relies on low-wage, largely un-unionized foreign labor in what the Baltimore Sun called “abysmal working conditions,” can sell itself as politically correct.
