The murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin is wrapping up today with closing arguments and jury instructions. The National Guard is standing by to deal with the expected riots when the jury returns its verdict later this week, along with law enforcement from several local agencies as well as other states. Downtown Minneapolis resembles a fortress, only with fewer people. Both Scott and I have questioned whether Chauvin can possibly get a fair trial in the current atmosphere. Jurors cannot fail to understand the consequences of a “not guilty” verdict.

It has been reported that Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman sold his Minneapolis home at a loss and moved out of the city after “protesters” besieged his house, and his office received “millions of e-mails and thousands of phone calls” about the George Floyd case. I have it on good authority that he is not the only public official who has sold his house and moved out of Minneapolis for reasons of personal safety.

A little while ago, a man carjacked a vehicle on a major road in a suburb adjacent to mine. Police gave chase, and he fired at them out of a window of the vehicle. With the police closing in, he rolled out of the moving car and ran onto an adjoining highway, trying to carjack a second vehicle. At some point he was shot by police officers.

The criminal was wounded but apparently alive at last word. The all-important question is, what is the race of the criminal? If he is black, like most carjackers, it means another week of riots. If he is white, no one cares. I can’t tell from the video, but it looks like he might be white. Let’s hope so.

Apple already goes to thoroughly unreasonable, impractical lengths to hide elements of devices that other manufacturers wouldn’t even think of. Just look at the light that tells you a Mac mini is on.

If that device isn’t on, there’s no light. That’s not to say the light is switched off, that it’s blank, but rather that it is vanished.

You can call it over-engineering and you can call it unnecessary, but it’s Apple’s acute attention to detail — and the company wants to do more of it.

The first Police Officer is a 26-year veteran of the department, with an excellent record. This Police Officer made a traffic stop, of a vehicle with expired license tabs. When the Officer ran the plates through the criminal justice database, the Officer discovered that the driver of the vehicle had an outstanding arrest warrant for assault, and carrying a firearm. The Officer then got out of the squad car to speak with the driver. A few minutes later, after the driver had worked himself loose from the handcuffs being applied, and gotten back into the vehicle to flee, the Police Officer shot him with her gun, while shouting “I’ll tase you, I’ll tase you!” This Officer will be charged with second-degree manslaughter. This Officer’s name and photo is all over the news, everywhere, and riots, burning, and looting are occurring all over the country, in support of the criminal victim.

The second Police Officer was present at a “riot” (also described in all of the Press as an “armed insurrection”). The Officer, in the middle of a crowd of trespassers, shot and killed a “rioter”, while said rioter was standing near a window. The person who was killed was a Veteran, with no criminal record of any kind, and was not engaging in any kind of destruction, nor was the person armed with any kind of weapon. Due to “lack of sufficient evidence”, this Police Officer will not be charged with any crime. This Officer has not been identified in the press, and no riots, looting, or burning are taking place in support of the innocent victim.

Recently, there has been a drumbeat of expressed concern by the left — the Democrats and their ever faithful messengers, the press — over a rise in hate crimes committed against Asians.  The shooting in Atlanta, in which six of the nine victims were Asian women, brought on a rush to declare this an anti-Asian hate crime.  It turned out, however, that the fact that a majority of the victims were Asians had nothing to do with the shooter’s motivation.  More recently, the brutal attack, caught on video, of a man shoving an elderly Asian woman to the ground, kicking her several times, and shouting “you don’t belong here” was, indeed, a hate crime.  So leftists were palpably anxious to declare it a symptom of their go-to faux bogey, white supremacy.  But the facts revealed that the anti-Asian assailant was a black man and a convicted murderer (of his mother!) out on parole.  (It is inconvenient for this perfidious white supremacist narrative that blacks have committed a sizeable number of the assaults against Asians.)

Facebook’s Oversight Board just moved to OK even greater censorship, despite years of criticism of the site’s attacks against conservatives. The Board announced its intention to expand its ability to censor content by accepting appeals from users who have reported content that they disagree with.

The Oversight Board announced the decision to allow users to appeal complaints to its platform April 13 amidst an already tumultuous year for free speech. “Now, users can also appeal content to the Board which they think should be removed from Facebook or Instagram,” the Oversight Board said. “The Board will use its independent judgment to decide what to leave up and what to take down. Our decisions will be binding on Facebook.” It added that the option to appeal content would “be available to all users over the coming weeks.”

Armed thugs in Hong Kong broke into the printing facility of an anti-government newspaper to destroy its equipment, the latest example of what the paper says is the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on press freedom in the city state.

The Epoch Times, a paper founded by Chinese dissidents in 2000, said four intruders forced their way into the paper’s Hong Kong printing plant during the early hours of April 12. The intrusion marks the fifth time vandals attacked the printing facility since it was established in 2006.

Surveillance footage shows masked attackers, one of them armed with a knife, wielding sledge hammers to destroy printing equipment. The intruders scuttled away after two minutes, stealing a computer in the process.

Cash-hungry union executives forged an Oregon worker’s signature in order to deduct money from her paychecks, according to a new lawsuit.

The suit, filed in late March, accuses a local chapter of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of forging Staci Trees’s signature on a membership card authorizing the continued withholding of union dues from Trees’s paycheck. The Oregon woman is turning to the courts to intervene and curtail labor union influence.

According to the Austin Chamber, more than half of newcomers from 2014 to 2018 came from other parts of the state, followed by just 8% from California and 3% from New York. The majority of people who moved to Austin during the pandemic came from other parts of Texas, according to USPS data. The city is also home to the University of Texas at Austin, which attracts tens of thousands of students, who may be more inclined to stick around after graduation because the city is thriving.

Austin is one of the Democrat-run municipalities into which all of the Blue pus in Texas drains. The good news is that those of us who live outside of the city cores don’t have to put up with them.

San Francisco residents are abandoning the city in droves, with a large number leaving to Texas and Florida, according to a report released Thursday by the commercial realty firm CBRE Group.

The city lost the most residents out of every major city between 2019 and 2020, with 70 percent moving to nearby Sacramento, according to data that was gathered from the United States Postal Service records through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Moves to Texas increased by 32.1 percent and to Florida by 46.2 percent.

A popular topic among Sinophiles since the installation of Joe Biden as president is the possibility of war with China over the status of Taiwan. The Chinese have been obsessed with Taiwan since Mao. With the American empire in sharp decline and the Biden regime unpopular at home and abroad, now could be the perfect time for the Chinese to make their move. As John Derbyshire is fond of pointing out, “Taiwan is like two feet from China … We are eight thousand miles away.”

Whether or not the US would actually go to war to defend Taiwan is debatable, but that is the official position. Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Australia are also technically committed to the defense of Taiwan. An all-out assault on Taiwan could very well result in attacks on Chinese infrastructure along the coast. It would most certainly result in massive economic retaliation. The Chinese regime would be forced to explain to her people why they are suddenly poor again.
