I’m told Hamas is firing rockets at Gaza, and that Israel is striking back. I don’t care. I used to care what happens in the Middle East, on the not-unreasonable theory that the total destabilization of the planet’s most oil-rich region, and a massive international trade hub, is the kind of thing that starts world wars. But dressing your airborne troops in red high heels, ordering strongly encouraging your embassies to fly the “black lives matter” flag*, and instructing your ambassador to publicly take a dump on his own country are also the kind of things that start world wars, so what’s the diff?

Needless to say, I also used to care about what happened in the Middle East on the theory that one should try to uphold civilization and resist barbarism, but I knew that was foolish even as I was doing it. Hamas et al might be stone-age savages, but all they want to do is commit genocide. I heard some egghead advocating five ideas more repugnant than that every day in the ivory tower. Needless to say I consider genocide bad, but at least Hamas knows which bathroom to use. From the perspective of “the long-term survival of the human race,” which is worse? We lost the “uphold civilization” battle the minute we started subsidizing student loans.

Some time ago I found myself in the middle of a discussion about race relations and minority experiences. When it was my chance to speak, I mentioned some statistical data that appeared to challenge the common narrative that racism is widespread and systemic. My interlocutor’s reply was that he simply did not care about the data—his own experiences as a person of color were more important and trumped any appeal to statistics. Another party to the discussion agreed, saying that people matter more than numbers.

The title of a recent article by Dawn Butler, a British MP, echoes this sentiment: “Unless you have lived experience of racism there’s no guarantee you’ll understand it.” A host of other politicians have leveraged appeals to lived experience in support of their policy goals. Elsewhere, a reporter for Time describes her lived experiences as a “source of expertise” as opposed to an “emotional bias.” Lived experiences have taken on a near-sacred status under which they cannot be questioned. Case in point: the Facebook group for the news website Vox bans “comments that invalidate the lived experiences of group members.”

But are lived experiences really that special? No. Quite simply, appeals to “lived experiences” are exercises in bad statistical reasoning.

One person’s ‘lived experience’ has no validity for anyone other than that one person, and sometimes not even then.

A Jewish family was leaving a synagogue when a group of men drove by and insulted the family until an armed bystander got between them, a local CBS affiliate reported Thursday.

Eric Orgen said he was walking with his wife and daughter when the men yelled and threw garbage at the family, according to CBS12 News.

This framing is what the Republicans now face. Most would like to go back to being the bland shadow of the Democrats. That was easy and fun. It required little risk, as all they had to do is wear little American flag lapel pins and be mean to Democrats. Until the 2016 debacle, being a Republican was simple. You waited for the Democrats to step on a rake, and then you talked about it on Fox News. Come the election you told your voters that they had to vote for you or the Democrats would win.

The one thing the Republicans seem to have figured out is the old approach is not going to work, even if the evil orange menace has been purged from their city. Maybe it is the threat of Trump running in 2024 or their own internal polling, but they seem to have figured out that the old product is not going to sell. They need a new product to take to their voters if they hope to win future elections. This is the gist of this memo circulated by the House GOP leadership last month.

But then they notice them anyway, so a yet another new term has to be invented.

In contrast, not using “schizophrenic” to mean “multiple personalities” would be language reform to make language more empirically realistic. Perhaps there isn’t much of a constituency for that?

The U.S. military is having trouble finding recruits that aren’t too heavy to meet guidelines because of the growing childhood obesity rates across the country, so Army recruiters are working to identify potential soldiers who need to lose dozens of pounds before they can qualify to join the military.

“You’re even recruiting in a population that is obese,” retired Maj. Gen. Malcolm Frost, who served for 35 years in the Army and works with the nonprofit group “Mission Readiness” to prepare potential recruits, told NPR. “That’s what our recruiters around the nation are dealing with.”

According to the Department of Defense, a full third of young adults ages 17-24, the optimal age for recruits, are simply too heavy to sign up.

According to video accounts of the incident posted on Twitter, the pro-Palestinian mob approached a group of men dining at a sushi restaurant in West Hollywood and asked if they were Jewish. When the men replied, “Yes,” they attacked them. The mob hurled bottles and yelled anti-Semitic slurs. One bystander said they repeatedly struck one of the Jewish men “with a pole.” Police are investigating whether the incident was a hate crime.

Violent crimes soared in most areas where police agencies are working under federally court-ordered reform agreements.

The finding comes from an Axios review of FBI and Justice Department data on all 12 agencies operating under consent decrees since 2012. The outlet found that seven of the areas where police agencies are under consent decrees experienced increases in violent crime rates in two years compared to the two years before they entered into the agreement.

Consent decrees are court-approved legal agreements reached without litigation. With it, a judge can keep tabs on a police department to make sure it is complying with court orders.

Like all ne’er-do-well children of successful politicians, Liz Cheney has a serious case of entitlement. Instead of going out with dignity, she embarrassed herself one last time with a tantrum on the House floor.
