Physician burnout has been a problem for a long time, but it’s exploded since Obamacare. So many physicians are changing careers and retiring early that our projections about how many new doctors we need to produce each year in medical schools has turned out to be way off. We’re trying to fill the gap with nurse practitioners and physician assistants because it takes less time to educate those, but we still can’t catch up. Even the famously leftist medical journals are starting to take note.
This month’s “Family Practice News” has an article entitled, “Zero-burnout practices often solo, physician-owned.” They did a survey of several hundred small to medium-sized primary care practices and found that the burnout rate in solo practices was much lower than in other practice types.

If a frank enemy of the United States had taker over the executive branch this past January, I wonder if he would conduct himself one whit differently than have Joe Biden, his administration, and his Democratic enablers in Congress and the media. This isn’t the point that Andrew McCarthy expressly makes in his August 7 NR column “Why the Border Crisis Is Here to Stay,” but the column supports the point and it is the one I would like to make.
…
How would an enemy of the United States do any differently?

Freeberg heads down a rabbit hole.
Liberals go through the motions of coming up with brand new ideas, and then the conservatives complain about them. High up on the list of these complaints the conservatives have about the liberal idea, is the observation that the idea is anything but new.
Liberals then complain about the conservatives. They ascribe all sorts of personal defects to the conservatives that are rather silly, for if they apply at all, a search for an enthused self-identifying liberal who shares such defects in equal measure, is a brief search. High up on the list of these complaints the liberals have about conservatives that apply with equal legitimacy to liberals, is the complaint that conservatives do a lot of complaining. But that one, at least, has the virtue of being true.

Earlier today, I wrote about an alleged ideological division in the Democratic party between the far left and the establishment. Now, I want to consider an ideological split in the Republican party about which Eliana Johnson filed this report.
That gap is related to, but not the same as, the division between hardcore Trump supporters and Republicans who would like to see the Party move on from the ex-president. It’s the divide between traditional free-market Reagan Republicans and Republicans who, in Eliana’s words, want the government “to get more, rather than less, involved in national economic policy in order to help advance a certain set of social and cultural goals.” Apparently, the emerging label for the latter group is “common good capitalism.”
As I have written before, when you stick a qualifier on the front of a term, the term no longer applies. ‘Common good capitalism’ is no longer capitalism, just an attempt to hijack the term in service to a non-capitalist political agenda.

Parents concerned about the leftward tilt of K-12 schools should take a close look at an international organization that is influencing education systems worldwide.
In 2018, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD, announced its educational goals for the world in a document titled “The Future of Education and Skills: Education 2030.”
Among its recommendations: “Children entering school … will need to value common prosperity” above other concerns, and “curricula should continue to evolve, perhaps in radical ways” that “reflect evolving societal requirements.”
With the viral spread of critical race theory in tandem with gender theory flooding the world’s kindergarten classrooms and up, curriculum has most certainly evolved “in radical ways.”

Historically, fire was a regular visitor to most Western forests, except moist locations like those along the Pacific Northwest coast and in British Columbia. Frequent or periodic fires from Indigenous burning and lightning strikes created patchworks of grasslands, shrublands and regenerating forests of all ages.
Past fires influence the way subsequent fires burn and what they leave behind. For example, Indigenous burning practices not only enhance cultural resources and wildlife habitat but also reduce the amount and connectedness of fuels that drive large, severe wildfires. Similarly, patchy burns from lightning ignitions create forest landscapes that are less likely to burn all at once.

Rather than looking back on history to when society at large blamed Jews, poor people, rich people, blacks, whites, gays, witches, straights, women, men, etc….let’s remove the emotionalism from it and just call the scapegoated group A. The history of human beings is much easier to understand, when you look for the simpler patterns, because when you review it in this sort of context you find the patterns. And once you find them you see they’re not complicated. So the era is unspecified, but it was cool to blame A. Let’s leave the problems unspecified too. Cows gave spoiled milk, real estate & gasoline were expensive, unemployment was sky-high…whatever…everybody blamed A because it was cool to blame A.
The pattern you’re going to see as you read up on history is that an effort arose to defrock A of any influence. Lots of people from all sorts of different walks of life participated in it, and they believed in it passionately, so the effort was both intense and broad. There was little resistance against this. Resistance would have been punished, with a sneering attitude of…so what, you’re with the A? And so members of Group A became pariahs. They may or may not have been driven underground or herded into boxcars, but the one consistent thing is that they weren’t allowed to have an effect on anything.

While much of the world has been focused on combating the global coronavirus pandemic, extremist and criminal groups have been carrying out kidnapping-for-ransom raids on Nigerian schools with the hopes of extorting local populations.
The Daily Signal has reported on those developments previously, but the situation has not improved. In early July, following six days of attacks, Nigerian authorities closed 13 schools after more than 125 students were kidnapped from a Baptist high school.
In addition to the kidnappings, 33 civilians were killed and four churches were burned.
According to Statisense, a Nigerian data company, more than 3,000 people have been kidnapped since January.

Within this political structure, there is very little room for any dispute, much less disputes over consequential matters. Our political class, which includes the mass media, the commentariat and the donor class, is left to fight pitched battles over trivial issues, often invented for the purpose. In the case of the media, the selection pressure over the last thirty years has resulted in a collection of performers highly tuned to personalize trivial issues and express those emotions on the stage.
It is why the Trump years were a cacophony of hysterics. This is how everyone responds to everything. In the case of Trump, the entire dramatis personae just happened to be on one side. Note how none of the claims about his administration were rooted in policy. They never engaged in policy disputes with him. It was all highly personal and ridiculously petty.

The biggest local crime story this year may be the beheading of America Thayer in broad daylight on the streets of Shakopee, Minnesota last week. America was murdered by one Alexis Saborit. Saborit was her abusive boyfriend.
In a 2017 Carver County proceeding against him for abusing America (Thayer, that is), Judge Kevin Eide indicated in the court’s release order/bail hearing document that “Defendant has ICE hold.” At his initial appearance on the murder charge on Friday, Saborit asked to be deported to his own country rather than stand trial in Scott County.
Saborit was on his way to court with Thayer on a 2020 arson charge when he murdered her. In the arson case Saborit is described as a Puerto Rican male. If so, he would be an American citizen.
What is Saborit’s immigration status? So far as I can tell, Alpha News editor Anthony Gockowski is the only reporter pursuing an answer to the question. He reports: “[N]either the Shakopee Police Department nor ICE responded when Alpha News asked for clarification.” One way or another we intend to achieve clarity.

During the campaign I thought the over/under on the decline of Biden’s faculties should be set at 40 percent. Since then I have upped it to 50 percent. Until he takes a cognitive test, we are stuck with guesses based on our observations and inferences. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Michael Goodwin notes in the New York Post today the visible “evidence he is not up to the job. His frailty and mannerisms hardly inspire confidence, and the obvious attempts to hide him from extended questioning fuels more doubts about his fitness.”

But some exceptions have cropped up. In 1977, for instance, researchers in the Soviet Union found something peculiar while looking at a virus that infects photosynthetic bacteria: All the A’s in the genome had been replaced with an alternative base, 2-aminoadenine, which was later dubbed Z. Usually, C pairs with G and T pairs with A to form double-stranded DNA. But in this virus, with no A’s to be found, T paired with Z. (During gene transcription, T-Z was still treated as though it were T-A.)
The Z base looks like a chemical modification of A; it’s an adenine nucleotide with an extra attachment. But that modest change allows Z to form a triple hydrogen bond with T, which is more stable than the double bond that holds together A-T.

The transit industry is terrible at accurately predicting future costs and ridership. It is terrible at cost-effectively moving people. But it is very good at one thing: spin.
When the pandemic dropped ridership by more than 80 percent, did the industry say, “I guess we aren’t needed right now; you can cut our subsidies”? No! It said, “We are carrying essential workers to their jobs, therefore you must increase our subsidies.”
Now that ridership is slowly recovering, is the industry saying, “we are now carrying only 42 percent of pre-pandemic levels, so you can cut our subsidies”? No! Instead it is saying, “Ridership of some agencies has increased by as much as 80 percent, so you must increase our subsidies!”
“Transit” never means “going from where you are to where you want to be as quickly as possible”. It always means “going from where you aren’t to someplace not where you want to be on somebody else’s schedule that incidentally eats up at least twice as much time as driving”.

When I was a kid, scientists in the movies were either good guys who used their knowledge and skills to solve the problem and kill the monster or the aliens or they were bad guys (“mad scientists”) whose ego caused them to misuse science in an attempt to rule the world. Those movies never had incompetent scientists trying to fake science and skill to gain power and influence; that would be the movie we are seeing now.
We could start working the script with a long look at the execrable Neil Ferguson who became famous by persuading British authorities that millions of Britons would die from Mad Cow Disease. He made equally stupid predictions about swine flu and bird flu. There is nothing in this man’s professional record that would suggest he has any credibility, but damn if the U.K. and the U.S. didn’t base their initial response on his preposterous COVID model which was followed by his even sillier prediction of mass deaths if any nation dared let up on lockdown or closure interventions.

Why would anyone have faith in the government’s telling the truth? It’s clear that if the facts get in the way of their agenda, they aren’t interested in “complicating” their message. We always knew that government, and especially politicians, “mishandled” the truth, but we figured that behavior went with the job. After all, they desperately wanted to fool as many people as possible. But now the lying is so ubiquitous that the word “truth” has lost its meaning. I’d like to think the lying happens less on the Right, but I simply don’t know if that’s true anymore. Even more disappointing is that more than ever, the media has decided that its mission is to defend the Leftist agenda, so they are happy to collude in the lying.

The Other McCain turns over a rock.
San Jose isn’t Alabama or Mississippi. You can talk all you want about “the system” and slave ships, but San Jose was never part of that. There were no cotton plantations in Santa Clara County, and I’m doubtful the KKK ever had much influence there. As for the current demographics of San Jose, the city’s population is less than 30% non-Hispanic white, 33% Hispanic, 32% Asian, 16% “other,” and about 3% black.
Even if we did not know the specific details of Demetrius Stanley’s death, does it make sense to jump to the conclusion that racism explains this shooting? Is San Jose a bastion of right-wing Trump voters upholding “systemic racism”?
…
All of San Jose’s elected representatives are Democrats. The governor of California is a Democrat, as are both of the state’s U.S. Senators. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden got nearly 64% of the vote in California, and almost 73% of the vote in Santa Clara County. There may be more liberal places in American than San Jose, but certainly the city is not a reactionary stronghold of white supremacy.

Terry Trobiani, who runs Gianelli’s, a hot dog and beef spot along Highway 176 in Prairie Grove, McHenry County, says he was ticketed for “improper display” after a village administrator recently stopped by, according to FOX 32 of Chicago.
“He says, ‘You might want to read this,’” Trobiani recalled the official saying as he was handed a printout of the local rules.
“The American flag is a symbol of patriotism,” Trobiani said. “It’s not a sign. They’re equating it with open/closed. Dine in, sign out.”

In a pattern similar to what other industrialized nations have already experienced, China not only has a labor shortage because of a low middle class birth rate, they are now experiencing the side effects of too many university graduates. Currently about 54 percent of young (18-22) Chinese will obtain university degrees and a growing percentage of them cannot find jobs that justify the effort and expense that went into obtaining a diploma. In 2021 over nine million recent university graduates went looking for a job. That was four percent more than 2020 and most will not find a job that requires a university degree. Even grads with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) degrees are not guaranteed a job and, even if they get an offer, it is not as attractive (well-paid and in their field) as a decade ago. Many have to settle for low-level (high school) teaching jobs. The military is always seeking STEM grads but this is considered second-best because pay and benefits are not great and working conditions are often very unattractive, especially in the navy where ships spend more and more time at sea. Another problem with the military is that you have to qualify to be an officer and that excludes many STEM grads who cannot meet the physical or gender (males preferred) requirements.

Clausewitz famously drew the parallel between war and politics when he said, “War is the continuation of politics by other means.” Therefore, is makes sense for those engaged in politics to study the tactics of war and the warrior. It is not an accident that many of the great political figures in our history were also military men. Twelve U.S. presidents were generals. For a country founded on the principle of civilian rule, having a quarter of the executives come from the military is telling.
