A controversial Virginia prosecutor apologized to the mother of a daughter slain by an illegal immigrant but still defended his county’s sanctuary policy during a contentious House hearing Thursday.

“I am deeply sorry for your loss, I say that not only as a prosecutor but as a parent of a daughter,” Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said to Cheryl Minter, mother of Stephanie Minter, during a hearing of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement.

“I’m sorry for what you are having to endure and I promise that my office is doing everything we can to prosecute the man responsible,” Descano added.

Fairfax County law enforcement refused to honor an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer for Abdul Jalloh, who was released and allegedly killed Stephanie Minter at a local bus stop in February.

This week the Democrat mayor of Arcadia, CA pled guilty to charges of acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China. Prosecutors alleged that from 2020–2022 (pre-mayor but continuing into her time in office), she and an associate operated a website promoting pro-China propaganda at the direction of PRC officials, without registering as a foreign agent.

She faces at up to 10 years in prison for the crime, and it raises questions about how many more US mayors are on the payroll of foreign governments. But this scandal, like most scandals surrounding Democrats, will probably be erased from public discussion and forgotten within days. It’s a tale that keeps repeating over the last decade and the lack of scrutiny (or pattern recognition) is leading to devastating consequences for the US as a whole.

The common reaction among many conservatives when they come across such news is to dismiss it as predictable. “The idiots living in that city got exactly what they voted for…” is the often heard retort. The implication being that it’s “not our problem” and that leftists should be allowed to rot in the hellholes they created for themselves. But the truth is, it is a problem, for the entire country.

Jews are under assault in Mayor Madman’s New York City. Would you have the temerity to wear a mezuzah around your neck or a kipot on your head in public? Would you have the gall to gather for services at a local congregation? The New York Post reports “An anti-Israel mob clashed with counter-protesters near a Brooklyn synagogue on Monday night — less than a week after a similar demonstration rocked Manhattan.”

The current Post headline refers to last week’s mob that materialized outside a Manhattan synagogue. The Post reported that story in “Hateful anti-Israel mob descends on historic NYC synagogue, clashes with cops in rowdy protest.” How rowdy can you get?

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon is on the case. Today the Post also reports “Rowdy anti-Israel NYC protesters could be hit with federal charges, DOJ threatens.”

The Post headlines refer to the animus on display as “anti-Israel.” That is nasty, but the animus goes beyond the Jewish state to the Jewish people. In tune with the mayor, the New York mobs are wildly anti-Semitic.

It is no secret that the recent local election results were catastrophic for the Labour Party. Of course, this comes as no big surprise. Labour’s policies are bankrupting the country. Yields on UK government bonds show that the market has lost trust in Britain. More or less everything is impoverished, broken or dysfunctional. Britain has become a bloated welfare state whose main purpose is to act as a safe haven for illegal migrants. Labour – a party of misguided, progressive activists – has no strategy whatsoever other than to force some kind of cultural warfare on its ethnic British population.

I wouldn’t call it financial incompetence. It goes way beyond that; it is almost as if they are doing it on purpose. In the May local elections, traditional Labour footholds were obliterated. In places like Sunderland, Labour supporters flocked to Reform in more or less their entirety. It will be generations before they would trust again a Labour government; a Labour government that has shown it despises the white working-class voter labelling quarter of a million white rape victims as ‘racists’.

True to fashion, the three key electoral strongholds of the gay Left to be found in Oxford, Cambridge and Camden continued to vote Labour and in particular the Green Party – a party that has nothing at all to say about the environment, but instead bizarrely courts simultaneously the gay and the Muslim vote.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a federal civil rights investigation into Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano over allegations that his office gave preferential treatment to illegal immigrants accused of serious crimes.

This Thursday, mere days after that announcement, Descano—who has received more than $650,000 from Soros-backed PACs and affiliated groups—is scheduled to testify before Congress at a House Judiciary Committee hearing examining the dangerous consequences of sanctuary policies in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Indeed, Descano is a key player contributing to the increasingly dangerous environment in Fairfax County. In February, police arrested Abdul Jalloh, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone, and charged him with the fatal stabbing of Stephanie Minter, a 41-year-old mother, at a bus stop in Fairfax County. Jalloh had previously been arrested more than 30 times, only to be released back onto the streets. In more than a dozen of his arrests, Descano’s office entered “nolle prosequi,” a legal term meaning it chose not to pursue the charges.

An elected Supreme Court justice in Pennsylvania announced Monday night that he has left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent, citing concerns about antisemitism.

In a statement, David Wecht, who is Jewish and served as Pennsylvania’s Democratic Party chair from 1998 to 2001, said he believed antisemitism has moved from the fringe of the Democratic Party to the mainstream.

“Nazi tattoos, jihadist chants, intimidation and attacks at synagogues, and other hateful anti-Jewish invective and actions are minimized, ignored, and even coddled,” he wrote. “Acquiescence to Jew-hatred is now disturbingly common among activists, leaders and even many elected officials in the Democratic Party.”

Wecht wrote that he had long understood that antisemitism “always festered on the fringe” of the right, a fact that hit home in 2018 when a far-right shooter killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh where he and his wife were married in 1998.

“In the years that have followed, that same hatred has grown on the left,” he said in his statement. “It is the duty of all good people to fight this virus, and to do so before it is too late.”

Agitators shouted “fascist” and obscenities over the weekend outside a Portland, Oregon hotel where they believed FBI Director Kash Patel was staying, according to Fox 12 Oregon and several posts on social media. Patel was reportedly attending a friend’s funeral.

The agitators gathered outside the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. Some of the videos were posted on social media on Saturday; others were posted on Sunday.

A newly elected Green Party councillor in the UK has sparked controversy after sharing footage of himself driving a Lamborghini shortly after winning his local election seat—drawing accusations of hypocrisy given his party’s policies on reducing car use and taxing drivers.

Mohammad Baghdadi Khan, who won the Halliwell ward in Bolton, Greater Manchester, posted a video showing him at the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, a high-performance sports car worth up to £270,000 (€311,000). The clip, which also included footage of his election win, was reportedly filmed at a wedding in 2023 where a convoy of luxury vehicles was used.

In addition to the Lamborghini footage, Khan also shared clips of himself driving a Mercedes with personalised number plates, a vehicle he reportedly used during his election campaign. During that campaign, he pledged to stand up for the people and support “greener spaces” while also backing higher taxes on the wealthy.

If the treatment of gender dysphoric youth were treated like any other medical topic, there would be little controversy about how patients should be cared for. Two years ago, Dr Hilary Cass, a former president of Britain’s Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, released an exhaustive report that examined the most reliable peer-reviewed research from around the world. She concluded that the laissez-faire policy of reflexively “affirming” gender-distressed minors, which has been ideologically fashionable since the mid-2010s, isn’t supported by science. She debunked the myth that puberty blockers are harmless drugs that merely hit the “pause” button on a child’s development; as well as the morbid propaganda claim that speedy “affirmation” is necessary to prevent gender-distressed individuals from committing suicide.

In the weeks that followed the report’s release, transgender activists—along with their allies in journalism, psychotherapy, and medicine—howled in outrage, insisting that Dr Cass’s analysis must somehow be flawed. For many in this camp, questioning the wisdom of medicalised gender transition is not only inherently pseudoscientific, but also indicative of transphobic bigotry.

It’s time to dismantle one of the most degraded sectors in American higher education: schools of education. The colleges responsible for training and certifying the majority of our nation’s teachers have become factories for mediocrity and indoctrination—the embodiment of what Allan Bloom termed “the closing of the American mind.” States have both the authority and obligation to replace these monolithic institutions by promoting better teacher-prep pathways that are already proving their worth across the nation.

As recent graduates of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, we believe that teachers must be more than competent technicians—they must deliberately form American citizens.

Today, however, schools of education are the chief culprits in the growing disquiet among pundits and everyday Americans about the value of the traditional four-year college experience. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees in education are among the lowest earners of any college major. Even more alarmingly, recent research shows their degrees aren’t worth what they paid and are often financed with loans.

New organized labor reforms signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week require a majority of members to be present for teachers union certification or recertification votes, increase fines for illegal strikes, and establish merit-based pay for educators.

In Idaho, after July 1, teachers unions will be prohibited from collecting dues directly from members’ paychecks, using paid time off for union activities, or recruiting new members during school hours.

A similar law in Arizona, which also bans teacher strikes and prohibits organized labor members from using any school property—even email addresses—for union activities, will be decided on by voters in the November election.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is already having success in redistributing wealth, right out of his city.

It seems the socialist mayor’s creepy video celebrating Tax Day and directly calling out billionaire CEO Ken Griffin as a target for a new pied-à-terre tax may have backfired.

While the slickly produced video—where he gleefully spoke about taxing the “rich”—may have been good short-term politics, it could ultimately create a financial doom cascade for a New York City already facing a “historic” budget crisis.

According to a report in the New York Post, Griffin and other “billionaire bigwigs” are earnestly considering leaving the city, or at the very least looking to make future investments elsewhere.

“The splashy one-two punch of Citadel CEO Ken Griffin and Apollo Global Management honcho Marc Rowan pledging to expand outside New York City has been coupled with a silent wave of businesses ‘quiet quitting’ the city over its hostile environment,” according to the Post.

Germany’s labour minister has been accused of denying reality after insisting “nobody immigrates into our social welfare system” despite government data showing foreigners are heavily overrepresented among welfare claimants.

The controversy erupted during a government question session on Wednesday, May 6th, when right-wing AfD MP René Springer asked why the government was not cutting spending “where it is obvious: immigration into our social systems” as Germany struggles with rising welfare costs and mounting budget pressure.

Labour Minister Bärbel Bas dismissed the claim outright, arguing instead that immigration was helping to address labour shortages.

The claim that Jews are imperialist “colonisers” isn’t new. It emerged from the Victorian-era antisemitism of an influential English journalist and matured in the early Soviet Union, long before the modern state of Israel was founded. As Paul Johnson (1928–2023), the great historian, observed:

As Johnson showed, the claim that Jews are “imperialists” predated Vladimir Lenin, leader of Soviet Russia from 1917 until his death in 1924. Johnson traces the source of this claim to the English writer and journalist J.A. Hobson, who travelled to South Africa to cover the Boer War in 1899. Hobson, as Johnson relates, regarded Jews as “almost devoid of social morality,” and possessing “a superior calculating intellect” that allows them “to take advantage of every weakness, folly and vice of the society in which he lives.”

Homeowner Jane invites the homeless James to live with her. “I’d hate to be homeless,” she tells herself. James starts to exploit and abuse her. She accepts it. “I would not exploit and abuse someone unless something truly terrible had happened to me,” she thinks. This is what Gad Saad would call “suicidal empathy.” In his book of the same name, the Canadian commentator rails against “the orgiastic misfiring of one of our most noble virtues, empathy.”

There is merit to Saad’s critique. He is correct that empathy is problematic when people exaggerate the similarities between individuals. In all likelihood, James is not exploiting and abusing Jane because he has been maddened by trauma. He is, fundamentally, a less conscientious person.

Saad is clear—and rightly so—that he has no inherent objection to empathy. He objects to empathy, and all other emotions, when they are not regulated by rationality. The extent to which we empathise with other people must be framed by a rational understanding of those people and their circumstances.

The Department of Education opened an investigation into Smith College, probing whether the women’s college discriminated on the basis of sex by admitting men who claim to identify as transgender women.

“Smith College, while still portraying itself as a women’s-only institution, admits natal men who feel like women, and on nothing more than their say-so,” Sarah Parshall Perry, vice president and legal fellow at Defending Education, told The Daily Signal in a Tuesday statement on the investigation. “That renders the gains of second-wave feminists who fought for Title IX mere relics of ancient history.”

“Title IX was a historic achievement for women’s equality in education, but Smith College seems to have forgotten that,” added Perry, who filed the complaint that led the department to open the probe.

“The college’s linguistic gymnastics are jaw-dropping, and as a recipient of federal funding, it must follow federal law—state law to the contrary notwithstanding,” she added. “We look forward to the Department of Education’s resolution of the claims against Smith.”

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most permissive cities, where prostitution is celebrated and going to a ‘coffee shop’ regularly involves getting high on cannabis.

It’s hardly surprising, then, that the city’s decision to ban public adverts for meat—alongside fossil fuel products such as petrol cars and airline travel—has been met with a mix of ridicule and outright condemnation.

Green officials say the move is part of their broader climate strategy. But Belgian MEP Barbara Bonte on Monday said that it more closely resembles “what happens when people with zero-point-zero sense of reality and way too much free time get bored.”

Hutchesons’ Grammar School in Glasgow has listed the courts for an undisclosed fee “as part of the school’s wider reinvestment strategy”.

The private school made the decision after the Government introduced a 20 per cent levy on independent school fees in January last year.

The New York Times (NYT) has been sued for alleged discrimination against a white male employee after he was passed over for an editor’s job which went to a multiracial woman.

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) accused the newspaper of breaching civil rights law by discriminating against the unnamed male candidate based on his race or sex, according to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court.

The unnamed complainant, who has worked at the newspaper since 2014 and says he has “considerable experience with real estate news”, was interviewed for the deputy property editor role, but not advanced to the final round.

Germany affords itself a state bureaucracy that functions like an artificial labor market placed upstream of the private sector. The flight of hundreds of thousands into the arms of the state corresponds with the shrinking number of self-employed in the country. And policymakers are actively promoting this trend.

Let us begin with a piece of good news: according to a Bertelsmann survey, around 40 percent of Germans aged 15 to 25 can imagine starting a business as their personal life path. That is a surprisingly high figure in a country where young people not infrequently cite, half-jokingly and half-seriously, Hartz IV or the public sector as career goals.

Let us note: the embers of entrepreneurship in Germany are still glowing; economic autonomy and sovereignty still rank highly among the younger generation. However, it is questionable whether this will suffice to ignite, one day, a true founding boom in a country of climate transformation, deeply rooted faith in the state, and an expansive public sector—a boom that could force a turnaround and help erase the long-accumulated sins of climate socialists.

Two parole reform bills advancing in New York are triggering intense debate, with supporters calling them long-overdue criminal justice reforms and critics warning they could allow violent offenders to leave prison early, according to the NY Post.

One proposal, known as the Elder Parole bill, would allow incarcerated individuals to request parole hearings once they reach age 55 and have served at least 15 years of their sentence. That eligibility would extend to some inmates serving life sentences, and those denied parole could reapply every two years.

The second proposal, Fair and Timely Parole, would change how parole boards evaluate inmates by placing greater focus on whether someone currently poses a risk to public safety instead of heavily weighing the original crime. Backers say the current system often ignores evidence of rehabilitation and keeps people incarcerated long after they have changed.

Sometimes, I wonder if politicians who consistently make the wrong decisions do so on purpose. After reading the European Commission’s new report (published in April), “Wealth Taxation, Including Net Wealth, Capital and Exit Taxes,” I am once again tempted to suggest willful ignorance.

The report favors a slew of new taxes on Europe’s richest: a tax on capital gains, both realized and unrealized; a broad-based, ‘avoidance proof’ tax on inheritance and gifts; and a tax on capital migration. If matched with heavy taxation on equity-based income, these hate-the-rich taxes would work as a confiscatory machine, vacuuming Europe clean of anything that resembles economic success.

Historically speaking, crawling to communists for help has never been a good idea; there’s always a catch. By extension, making trade deals with China and the CCP from a position of weakness usually ends with diplomatic concessions instead of mere economic concessions. Canadians are about to speed run this lesson after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “new strategic partnership” formed with China early this year. The announcement has been heralded as a pragmatic reset in Canada-China relations after years of tensions, aimed at diversifying Canada’s trade amid U.S. tariffs under Trump. The goals of the deal include increased bilateral trade, agricultural agreements, currency swaps and energy exports.

The problem is, Carney also wants Canada to maintain its relationship with Taiwan, which the CCP views as a violation of their “One China” policy. Not surprisingly, China is already using their newfound economic leverage to pressure Canada to submit to their demands on Taiwan.

A University of Cambridge college has been criticised after it failed to suspend students who made death threats against an undergraduate who visited Israel.

The visit, organised by the Pinsker Centre think tank, took Oxbridge student leaders to Israel, where they met Israelis and Palestinians to better understand the Gaza conflict.

But one of the party, Bradley Smart, 21, said he received death threats from fellow students when he returned to Homerton College.

It’s not true that the Left doesn’t have guiding principles. One of the most influential is “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” America and Israel are the enemy; therefore Hamas and the current Iranian regime are the friends because they share the same enemies. Iran calls the US “The Great Satan” and Israel “The Little Satan.” There really couldn’t be more of a mind-meld between the Left and the Iranian leaders than that. Everything else is secondary or lower.

The left pretends to be for “the people” – but it’s the case only if the people are on the same side of an issue as the left. If the people choose wrongly, screw the people. One example of this is the left’s constant attempts to take down the duly-elected Trump, whether through assassination or impeachment or lies. The people of Israel can be raped and murdered or even blown to bits by a nuclear weapon, and according to the left they had it coming and will have had it coming.

And so the left is able to ignore the brutal Iranian regime’s killing of its own protesters. It seemed that everyone was “focusing on workers over billionaires”, oblivious to the fact that tycoons such as George Soros and Neville Roy Singham were funding the events, paying for printed signs and banners, bussing in astroturf protesters, providing lunch for the useful idiots, etc. Mind you, Mr. Singham is a relative pauper in this field, being worth a mere $785 million.

All day yesterday I kept checking the riot news, expecting the tossing of Molotov cocktails and columns of smoke rising over “mostly peaceful” protests. But that didn’t happen. Yes, the crowds of earnest progressives turned out, but it wasn’t a repeat of the Summer of George Floyd. There was no sign of the kinetic excess that one would expect if Antifa or BLM had been mobilized for the occasion.

The problem with the left right now — no, I know they have many, but hear me out — is that they don’t acknowledge their shadow. In this sense, they’re not fully adults, and they do the most bizarre things because they think of themselves as “the good people” as though being good were bestowed by assignment at birth. A candidate in the United Kingdom’s Green Party is under fire after posting under the social media handle “thereal.anne.frank” that “every single Zionist” should be killed, marking the latest antisemitic scandal to hit the party in a matter of days.

Two other candidates have been charged with spreading hate online in relation to anti-Israel social media posts, while the party’s Jewish leader, Zack Polanski, is fending off allegations of deep-seated antisemitism.

The latest scandal came after the Jewish News revealed that in a series of posts on Threads, Tina Ion, a Green party candidate in Newcastle, referred to “Zionists” as “vermin” and “rats” and posted an image of an industrial shredding machine, which she called a “Zionist juicer.” She also referred to “Jewish Nazis” as “money grubbing thieves” who “have built mountains of money over centuries,” according to the newspaper.

The profile photo for the account, titled “thereal.anne.frank,” featured an image of a young woman wearing a keffiyeh, the traditional Palestinian headscarf. In one post referencing the image, Ion allegedly wrote that it was used “because Ann Frank wearing a keffieh pisses Zionists off.”

Dozens of ‘pro-Palestinian’ activists travelling on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla disembarked in Crete on Friday, May 1st after being intercepted by Israeli forces near the island.

The group of around 175 activists, according to Israeli estimates, was escorted to shore by Greek coast guards and transported on four buses to a location that was not publicly disclosed. Organisers of the flotilla, however, said the total number of people involved was 211.

Israel’s foreign ministry stated that more than 20 boats were stopped during the operation on Thursday. In a post on X, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the transfer of activists was carried out “in coordination with the Greek government,” adding that Israel appreciated Greece’s “willingness to receive the flotilla participants.”

Several European governments whose citizens were among those detained have called for their immediate release, arguing that Israel’s actions represent a serious breach of international law.
