For years now, ‘cancel culture’ has been counted among the most potent weapons of the online battles between the Left and the Right. It was and remained the real power behind the social justice mob, the ace played when movements had to be supported and revolts explained. Fleeting and capricious, it planted the seeds of fear, creating the illusion of widespread discontent in the minds of politicians, top managers, and regular social media users.
Leftists generally claim that if there even is such a thing as cancel culture, it is a matter of accountability rather than a tool of oppression. Their position is usually as follows: people may have the right to speak, but they are not entitled to an audience, and others are well within their right to exercise their own free speech in order to de-platform the opinions they disagree with. They are not, after all, banning their opponents—they have no power to do so—but only suggesting that their ‘offensive and harmful’ ideas should not be condoned. Public speakers, in particular, are completely fine to target since they are responsible for spreading incorrect messages. “How can such-and-such be considered silenced?” leftists further ask. “We have only blocked his events, but he still has a published book and a YouTube channel.” Moreover, they are giving a voice to the marginalised communities (a terrible cliché phrase beloved by progressives), thus making another step towards the much-desired equality.

As opening sentences go, ‘You fucking Nazi c*nt,’ takes some beating. This was the charge made against Andrew Doyle not by some faceless internet troll but by an old friend to whose son he is the godfather. A left-wing homosexual with a doctorate in early Renaissance poetry, Doyle makes an unlikely flagbearer for fascism. In fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone to whom the accusation would be more comically absurd. So, what caused his friend to make it? What deranging force separated an otherwise sane man from his senses?
That is what The New Puritans seeks to answer. In it, Doyle succeeds in doing what few writers have managed: he gives form to that nebulous movement known as woke.

Steve Hayward at Power Line.
About a decade after the end of the Vietnam War, by which time the bloodbaths of the Communist takeover of South Vietnam and the spillover of the carnage to Cambodia were undeniable, the West German journalist Uwe-Siemon-Netto, who had specialized in anti-American reportage as a correspondent during the war, caused a stir in Europe when he publicly suggested that for him and his fellow anti-war activists, the most appropriate course of action was a prolonged period of silence.
This recommendation comes back to mind just now in watching the neocon freakout over Gov. Ron DeSantis expressing doubts about our Ukrainian policy. Bill Kristol had an embolism on Twitter, his most prominent public platform these days. (How the mighty have fallen.) The Ukraine romantics (I’ll call them) rushed to say that Gov. DeSantis’s position was “pro-Putin,” even though DeSantis said he supported aid to Ukraine, but worried that the Biden Administration and other cheerleaders for our Ukrainian support don’t have a clear strategy and seem heedless of—or frightened by—the risks. It looks more and more like Vietnam all over again, in which we thought we could calibrate “graduated pressure” to achieve a precise outcome while always fearful of what a more forceful strategy might entail. War doesn’t work like that. As Ronald Reagan liked to say in the 1960s, we should either win, or get out. Everyone said he was irresponsible and naïve.
