Shut Up, Harvard Nerds

14th April 2023

Read it.

We regret to inform you the Ivy League nerds are at it again. This time it’s the Harvard nerds, who might not be quite as obnoxious as the Yale nerds, but are certainly among the worst.

This week they are outraged because a billionaire hedge fund guy—Ken Griffin (Class of ’89)—donated $300 million to his alma mater as a gesture of gratitude. That’s on top of the $150 million Griffin gave the university in 2014 to boost its financial aid program.

What a monster.

Well, yes, according to the outraged Harvard nerds. Why? Because Griffin has given money to Republican candidates and is a supporter of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Ingratitude, Harvard style

13th April 2023

Scott Johnson at Power Line.

Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin is an alumnus of Harvard who is grateful for his education. He has given millions to Harvard. Most recently, he gave an unrestricted gift of $300 million to Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is to be renamed in his honor. It’s hard to believe he couldn’t resist the temptation, find a worthier object of his charity, or distinguish between friends and enemies.

One might think that a simple thank-you from Harvard would be in order, but that is not the way of the world in our elite institutions of higher learning. Griffin is also a substantial Republican donor. Griffin’s departure from the party line at Harvard does not go down well with the renaming. The Harvard Crimson has an entire story on the fallout among the illuminati.

Cancel Culture: The Illusion of Justice

10th April 2023

Read it.

For years now, ‘cancel culture’ has been counted among the most potent weapons of the online battles between the Left and the Right. It was and remained the real power behind the social justice mob, the ace played when movements had to be supported and revolts explained. Fleeting and capricious, it planted the seeds of fear, creating the illusion of widespread discontent in the minds of politicians, top managers, and regular social media users.

Leftists generally claim that if there even is such a thing as cancel culture, it is a matter of accountability rather than a tool of oppression. Their position is usually as follows: people may have the right to speak, but they are not entitled to an audience, and others are well within their right to exercise their own free speech in order to de-platform the opinions they disagree with. They are not, after all, banning their opponents—they have no power to do so—but only suggesting that their ‘offensive and harmful’ ideas should not be condoned. Public speakers, in particular, are completely fine to target since they are responsible for spreading incorrect messages. “How can such-and-such be considered silenced?” leftists further ask. “We have only blocked his events, but he still has a published book and a YouTube channel.” Moreover, they are giving a voice to the marginalised communities (a terrible cliché phrase beloved by progressives), thus making another step towards the much-desired equality.

The New Puritans

2nd April 2023

Read it.

As opening sentences go, ‘You fucking Nazi c*nt,’ takes some beating. This was the charge made against Andrew Doyle not by some faceless internet troll but by an old friend to whose son he is the godfather. A left-wing homosexual with a doctorate in early Renaissance poetry, Doyle makes an unlikely flagbearer for fascism. In fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone to whom the accusation would be more comically absurd. So, what caused his friend to make it? What deranging force separated an otherwise sane man from his senses?

That is what The New Puritans seeks to answer. In it, Doyle succeeds in doing what few writers have managed: he gives form to that nebulous movement known as woke.
