Left-leaning Media Ignore Conservative Group’s Massive Legal Victory Against Southern Poverty Law Center

10th May 2023

The Foundry.

The Southern Poverty Law Center routinely brands mainstream conservative and Christian organizations “hate groups,” placing them on a map with chapters of the Ku Klux Klan, but most lawsuits aiming to hold the SPLC accountable for this alleged defamation have failed. Judges often dismiss defamation lawsuits against the SPLC, saying the defamed “hate groups” fail to meet the “actual malice” standard.

Yet on March 31, District Judge Keith Watkins denied the SPLC’s motion to dismiss a defamation claim from the Dustin Inman Society and its founder, D.A. King. The Dustin Inman Society is a pro-immigration enforcement group that the SPLC brands an “anti-immigrant hate group.” Watkins published his opinion explaining the ruling on April 24. His ruling allows the case to move into the discovery phase of litigation, where King can demand SPLC documents to prove his case (and the SPLC can demand documents from King, as well).

Watkins’ ruling represents the first time that an SPLC-accused “hate group” has succeeded in making it to discovery in a defamation lawsuit directly challenging the SPLC on its “hate group” accusation. Many organizations, including the Center for Immigration Studies, the Proud Boys, Liberty Counsel, and D. James Kennedy Ministries, have failed to reach this point, even though D. James Kennedy Ministries appealed all the way to the Supreme Court.

Trumpocalypse Now

10th May 2023

Read it.

Dog whistles work because they are inaudible to humans. Accusing a politician, therefore, of using “dog-whistle politics” – couching a (usually controversial) message to their core supporters in terms the general public do not notice – is formally self-refuting for doing so implies that it can be understood not just by the target audience, but also by the opposition. If that is so, however, the “dog whistle” is just a whistle. For the metaphor truly to work, the message needs to be so far removed from the understanding and concerns of the wider public that it sails straight over their heads, as when film-makers insert jokes aimed at adults into cartoons aimed at children.

Accusing Donald Trump of dog-whistle politics for his use of the phrase “America First”, previously associated with isolationism and the Ku Klux Klan, is therefore inapt. The history of that period is too well-known, and racism too central to the concerns of the left for them not to notice. But there is an area with which liberals, generally, have little experience and with whose language they are unfamiliar, and that makes it ripe territory for dog-whistling: religion.

The observation that Republicans are more likely to be religious than Democrats has been made so often that it has acquired its own name – the “God Gap”. In 2008, 28% of the latter claimed to have no religious affiliation, compared to 12% of the former. By 2021, the difference had widened to 45%-19%. Among those who do claim to be members of a religion, the figures are even more striking. About 80% of evangelical Christians voted for Donald Trump twice.

Trump Loses Sexual Assault Case

10th May 2023

John Hinderaker at Power Line.

I haven’t actually seen the verdict form, but it is not obvious why the jury would believe Carroll as to Trump’s “abusing and forcibly touching” her, but disbelieve her claim that he raped her. Perhaps the latter was simply a bridge too far in a crowded department store.

Carroll’s entire 27-year-old story was implausible, in my opinion. But a verdict in her favor was almost a foregone conclusion, given that Trump did not appear to testify on his own behalf. His deposition was taken during the case’s discovery phase, and some or all of it was played for the jury. I can only assume that Trump expected he would lose whether he testified or not, so he was better served, politically, to shun the proceeding and implicitly decline to accept its authority.

Will the verdict have any political impact? Some, I think. A jury finding is relatively credible, compared with merely being smeared by the press. And in many eyes, Trump’s checkered history will make plausible the jury’s finding that he sexually “abused” Carroll. The lawsuit was, in fact, a put-up job, encouraged and financed by anti-Trump activists. Nevertheless, the jury at least partially believed Jean Carroll, and that fact adds, not insignificantly, to the baggage that Trump carries as he seeks his party’s presidential nomination.

How to Bribe the Supreme Court

4th May 2023

Ann Coulter.

Having failed to destroy Clarence Thomas 32 years ago with preposterous sexual harassment charges (disbelieved at the time by 60% of Americans), now the left is resorting to attacking the ethics of a man vastly more honorable than the collection of degenerates reviling him.

The sole purpose of the media’s sudden fixation on the Supreme Court’s “ethics” is to morally intimidate conservative justices by reminding them that the left controls the culture. Since they lost abortion, liberals have been in a panic that the court will junk other liberal sacraments, like gay marriage and affirmative action, too. That’s the reason for the stream of calumnies directed at the justices.

As usual, the main target of the left’s rage is Thomas. We’re supposed to be appalled that Thomas’ billionaire friend Harlan Crow took the justice and his wife on a vacation that (the media claim) would have cost Thomas more than $500,000!!!

Well, yeah, but Thomas and his wife, Ginny, weren’t going alone. They hadn’t just won a cruise sweepstakes. They were joining Crow on a vacation he was taking anyway. Cost to donor: a few extra chicken cutlets and string beans.

The media want us to believe that generosity from personal friends is an ethical issue, but that’s because that’s not how liberals bribe government officials. They bombard their targets with the sort of public adoration that money can’t buy — or the sort of public hate that money can’t block. Your choice: Be beloved from every corner of society or be subjected to nonstop ridicule.

Not So Keen on Free Speech

1st May 2023

Read it.

Consider Kellie-Jay Keen, aka Posie Parker, a women’s rights activist who holds rallies under the rubric Let Women Speak. She advertises a place and time, turns up with stewards in hi-viz jackets, and hands the mic to any woman with something to say. Some talk about men who identify as women using women’s toilets and changing rooms at workplaces and gyms, or muscling into women-only support groups for everything from addiction to the menopause.

One frequent speaker served a prison sentence locked up with a trans-identified man; another, a disabled woman, fears asking for a female carer only for a man who identifies as a woman to turn up. An increasingly common theme is schools colluding with gender-distressed children’s delusion that they can change sex.

In a sane world, what these women say wouldn’t attract criticism; indeed, it wouldn’t even need to be said. But often they are drowned out by transactivists shrieking threats and slogans of the sort Robert Jay Lifton, in his 1961 book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, called thought-terminating clichés: “brief, highly reductive, definitive-sounding phrases [that] become the start and finish of any ideological analysis”. “Trans women are women”. “Trans rights are human rights”. “Kill all terfs [trans-exclusionary radical feminists]”.

Tucker Carlson’s Enemies Won’t Be Laughing When They See What He Does Next

27th April 2023

Washington Examiner.

The news that Tucker Carlson, Fox News’s highest-rated prime-time host, abruptly left the network sent shockwaves throughout the media world on Monday. The ladies of ABC’s The View, were, of course, delirious over the development. The left-leaning website The New Republic found the news “hilarious” and wrote, “It turns out the Fox News host wasn’t nearly as bulletproof as he thought he was.”

But they weren’t the only ones to hop aboard the schadenfreude train. They were quickly joined by conservative anti-Trumpers and former Fox News contributors Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes.

Jonah Goldberg is turning into a great disappointment. He isn’t as much of a whore for the Establishment as Bill Kristol or David French, but he is a disappointment.
