The Other McCain reviews some numbers.
Did you know this? “Seventy-one percent of the 387 ‘extremist related fatalities in the United States’ from 2008 to 2017 were committed by members of far-right and white-supremacist groups, according the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism.” That was published in the New York Times, which failed to do the math — i.e., 28 deaths per year, which “is less than half the annual fatality rate associated with bee and wasp stings,” as David Catron explains at The American Spectator.
Catron further explains that even this 28-per-year estimate of “extremist related fatalities” for “far-right and white-supremacist groups” is probably inflated and, while it is wrong to minimize this threat, it is also wrong to exaggerate it. There have already been 31 black people shot to death in Chicago this year, and it’s not “far-right and white-supremacist groups” who are committing those Chicago homicides.

Even if a meme you see that disparages a Democratic candidate is based on truth, it’s important to remember that its goal might be to simply weaken Democrats by making candidates toxic for swaths of the left, and ultimately make 2020 a repeat of 2016.

Nobody questions the 0.7%, what we question is the ‘due to’ clause. I got a 698 on the Math SAT and never deluded myself that I had the talent to be a Mathematics Professor.
The silliest idea peddled by proglodytes is the concept of ‘underrepresented’, which apparently proceeds from their assumption that every category of person is exactly equal to every other category of person, without any allowance for personal differences, and so if group A is X percent of the population then group A must be X percent of whatever (math professors, hockey players, bricklayers, whatever). By that metric, white people are ‘underrepresented’ on basketball and football teams, and women are ‘underrepresented’ in our prison population.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has now reclassified the product once dubbed “pink slime,” a meat filler product described as “lean finely textured beef,” as “ground beef.”
Beef Products Inc (BPI), the South Dakota manufacturer of the product, has received approval from USDA to label its product as “ground beef.”
The reclassification comes several years after BPI filed a defamation lawsuit against ABC News in 2012 after the news organisation coined the term “pink slime” in a report about its product. In 2017, the lawsuit resulted in a settlement between ABC News and BPI for about $177m, the highest ever in this type of corporate legal case.
Which, of course, doesn’t prevent Sarah Harvard of The Independent from perpetuating the smear in her article.

The Antiplanner is not afraid to ask an obvious question.
“Fire Damages Del Mar Mansion,” NBC San Diego News reported yesterday. The mansion in question, the story added, had three bedrooms, three baths, and 2,242 square feet.
Merriam-Webster defines “mansion” as “a large, imposing residence.” The Free Dictionary says it is “a large, stately house.” Call me old fashioned, but 2,242 square feet doesn’t seem that large, imposing, or stately to me. Maybe compared with tiny homes it is, but even in California, most people have not yet been squeezed into tiny homes.
You can bet money on the fact that if a newspaper doesn’t like you and you have a fence around your yard it will be described as a ‘compound’.

And Albany will be only too happy to oblige.
Testifying on Tuesday at a state budget hearing, Mr. Pearl asked a bipartisan group of about half a dozen legislators to create a new “multimillionaire’s tax” on households earning more than $5 million a year in order to fund new affordable housing, infrastructure and schools.
“I’m a person of some means. I could live wherever I want,” said Mr. Pearl, a former managing director at BlackRock. “I could live in Kansas, if I wanted to live in a state with low taxes and low services. But I don’t.”
Things to notice:
- This is a very small group of people, which the New York Times (as is its wont) pretends speaks for all ‘millionaires’ in New York.
- There is nothing to prevent anybody, millionaire or otherwise, just writing a check to the State Treasury if they wanted to pay more tax; that doesn’t require ‘raising taxes’ for everybody.
- What they really want is to raise taxes including the almost-rich people, so that these jumped-up proles don’t compete with the existing rich people for luxury goods and services. If the tax rate is 50%, then a guy with $10,000l,000 is left with $5,000,000, while a guy with $200,000 is left with $100,000. Go look up how far $100,000 will get you in New Yawk — it won’t be a dinner reservation at Per Se.
