‘The Real Reason to End the Death Penalty’

22nd April 2021

Paul Graham lectures you on morality.

When intellectuals talk about the death penalty, they talk about things like whether it’s permissible for the state to take someone’s life, whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent, and whether more death sentences are given to some groups than others. But in practice the debate about the death penalty is not about whether it’s ok to kill murderers. It’s about whether it’s ok to kill innocent people, because at least 4% of people on death row are innocent.

Or, in other words, 96& of people on death row are guilty.

Far from being rare, wrongful murder convictions are very common.

This is a use of ‘very common’ with which I am unfamiliar. Since when is 4% ‘very common’? At the very least, ‘very common’ ought to mean ‘over 50%’.

This circus of incompetence and dishonesty is the real issue with the death penalty. We don’t even reach the point where theoretical questions about the moral justification or effectiveness of capital punishment start to matter, because so many of the people sentenced to death are actually innocent. Whatever it means in theory, in practice capital punishment means killing innocent people.

Yes, it does, occasionally. Totally absent from this analysis, however, is the number of ‘innocent people’ who die because murderers are put back into circulation. Surely that matters, if we’re counting up ‘innocent people’?

This is the great flaw in all of the bleeding-heart hand-wringing about ‘killing innocent people’. No system is error-proof. But a 4% error rate would be miraculous in any other field of human endeavor. The instrumental justification for the death penalty is that when a murderer is made dead, he (or she) doesn’t go on to murder again. So the lack of potential future victims is certainly a relevant piece of information.

There is a case to be made for eliminating the death penalty, but this isn’t one of them.

I had always respected Paul Graham’s insights, until now. But apparently he’s Just Another Woke Weenie.

How Half-Baked Ideas Infiltrated Psychology

19th April 2021

Read  it.

If you’re the sort of person who buys and reads books about human behavior, then it is likely you have recently encountered an exciting, counterintuitive new psychological idea that seems as if it could help solve a pressing societal problem like educational inequality, race relations, or misogyny. Maybe you came across it in a TED Talk. Or, if not there, in an op-ed or blog post or book.

It is, after all, a golden age for popular behavioral science. As the University of Virginia law professor Gregory Mitchell, a keen critic and observer of the field, wrote in 2017, ‘With press releases from journals and universities feeding a content-hungry media, publishing houses looking for the next Gladwellian bestseller, governments embracing behavioral science, and courts increasingly open to evidence from social scientists, psychologists have more opportunities than ever to educate the public on what they have learned about why people behave as they do.’

On Friday’s NBC Nightly News, they focused on recent political violence against the Capitol Police, but they were obviously more interesting in tagging the “far right” for recent violence, and not the “far left.” When the April 2 Capitol cop killing came up, the assailant Noah Green was not named, and his love for Louis Farrakhan was also spiked.

Lester Holt touted “a milestone today in the investigation of the deadly riot at the US Capitol, the first guilty plea.” He turned to NBC Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams, and they were naming names and applying labels.

Climate Change Checkup

15th April 2021

Read it.

If you have the misfortune to follow the dreary climate change business, you’ll know that one of the fine points is which long-term emissions forecast to plug into your model. Never mind the accuracy of the models for now—even a good model is vulnerable to the age-old GIGO problem—”garbage in, garbage out.” In climate model forecasting, if you have an absurd emissions forecast, you’ll get absurd (but headline-grabbing) results.

People who follow this subject have long known that the emissions forecast that generates most of the scary headlines of the last few years is known as RCP 8.5 (short for “Representative Concentration Pathways”—never use plain language when you can use forbidding jargon), and most experts agree that its very high emissions forecast is bunk.

Donald Trump Is Building a Shadow Republican Party

The US or ‘CHOP’? Nets Hide Democrat’s Radical Call to Abolish Police, Prisons

14th April 2021

Read it.

While the media is constantly accusing the right of being domestic terrorists, left-wing extremism is routinely ignored by the media. A Democrat congresswoman’s cry for policing and prisons to be abolished should make the news but as often is the case, it was ignored by ABC, NBC and CBS.

Following the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright, “squad” member Rashida Tlaib didn’t try to quell the unrest with responsible calls for peace and justice, even as riots erupted in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota and elsewhere. Instead, she threw gasoline on the fire by accusing every police department in the country of being “inherently racist” and demanded they be abolished, despite “defunding” being linked to rising crime.

Dangerous Word Games: Nets Drop ‘Mostly Peaceful,’ Riots Are Now ‘Protests’

12th April 2021

Read it.

The left’s Orwellian redefining of words took a dangerous step Monday as all three of the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) started to refer to the riots of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota as “protests,” effectively dropping the “mostly peaceful” label they were mocked for using in the summer of 2020. All of this followed an apparently accidental shooting where a police officer seemingly went to use her Taser but discharged her duty pistol instead.

The first showing of the media’s dangerous rebranding of riots came earlier in the day when an activist journalist screamed at Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon, saying “there was no riot” as he described how his officers were attacked with projectiles. “The officers that were putting themselves in harm’s way were being pelted with frozen cans of pop, they were being pelted with concrete blocks,” he told the press.

No one expects transit agencies to work very hard to provide safe, efficient services taking people where they need to go. But sometimes urban residents need a reminder that it is their job to rearrange their lives and risk their health and safety to insure that transit has enough riders to justify the huge subsidies it receives.

At least, that’s the opinion of Chicago Sun-Time columnist Laura Washington, who urges Chicago residents to “get on the L or bus. Or both.” After all, she reasons, “If riders don’t return to the CTA [Chicago Transit Authority], Metra [commuter trains] and Pace [suburban buses], look for layoffs, service cuts and hefty fare hikes.” Her view is enthusiastically endorsed by Streetsblog Chicago.

Vogue Skips Over Maya Angelou to Honor BLM/Abortion Artist as First Poet Cover Star

8th April 2021

Vogue Magazine is re-affirming once again that its days of being a fashion magazine are over and that it’s a full on far left political propaganda outfit. The publication’s latest cover features the young 20-something Amanda Gorman, the “poet” who puts far left political punditry to a meter and calls it art.

Yeah, she’s the kind of once-in-a-generation artist that makes lyrics out of Planned Parenthood slogans. Who wouldn’t want a young woman who rhymes about a woman’s right to kill their unborn children to be the “first ever” poet on the cover of Vogue Magazine?

When ‘poet’ means ‘black person hating on whites’, does it really matter?

How small of all that human hearts endure
The part that laws or kings can cause or cure.

Let’s see Maya Angelou come even close to touching real poetry.

Poof! They’re Gone!

8th April 2021

Does the name Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa ring a bell? What about Noah Green? Only the true news junkies, with a gift for remembering trivia, will recall their names at this point. Which is remarkable, because Mr. Alissa killed ten people in a Boulder grocery store two weeks ago, and Mr. Green killed a police officer at the U.S. Capitol one week ago. Both crimes led to ubiquitous headlines, across all media platforms, as soon as they happened, as you might expect. But then, the strangest thing happened. They disappeared. Poof! They just vanished.

Both killers were Muslim, which prevents the stories from being covered. Leftist news sources like CNN ignored the stories, because they are unhelpful to our mass media’s stated goals of promoting the Democrat party. Right-wing news sources like Fox News ignored the stories, to avoid the appearance of discriminating against Muslims or other minorities. So guess what that means? That means that nobody can cover stories like this. So poof! They’re gone!

Yet most Americans believe voting is a more sacred act than flying Delta and, moreover, may have noticed that Delta has partnerships with systemically racist China. Also, a recent Associated Press poll showed that 72% of Americans favor requiring photo ID to vote.

Thank You, Donald!

8th April 2021

John Hinderaker at PowerLine.

One of the dumbest of all the anti-Trump conventions was the “without evidence” trope. This was a single-use smear, analogous to an old-fashioned Derringer. The Democratic Party press fired it once, and we will never see it again. Certainly not while a Democrat is in the White House.

The concept was stupid, since politicians say things all the time for which they do not, at that moment, provide “evidence.” Over the last four years, it was even worse than that, since Democratic Party news outlets like the Washington Post ritually repeated the “without evidence” claim even though such evidence had been provided, often in copious detail, but not in the same sentence.

Hunter Biden, Media-Pampered (Scam) Artist

7th April 2021

Read it.

It doesn’t take a particularly impressive imagination to predict how the liberal media would cover one of Donald Trump’s sons if he had a major crack and alcohol addiction. Stories would begin with the notion that Trump was a terrible father, obviously too self-absorbed and absent to raise his children right.

CNN would certainly strike that pose. But on Sunday’s Reliable Sources, host Brian Stelter was deeply impressed with the “extraordinary” and “breathtaking” Hunter Biden memoir. Stelter gleefully promoted every tabloidish Trump-trashing book — from Omarosa to Scaramucci — but he’s doing the exact opposite now.

Why Does 60 Minutes Still Exist?

6th April 2021

John Hinderaker at PowerLine.

It is remarkable that, nearly 17 years after Rathergate, 60 Minutes still exists and apparently has an audience. 60 Minutes has never been truthful or reliable. Not long before Rathergate, we wrote about another instance of blatant misuse of documents by that program to support a false narrative. It hasn’t gotten any better since then.

Last night, 60 Minutes contributed to the Democratic Party’s smear campaign against Governor Ron DeSantis by airing a heavily edited exchange between CBS “reporter” Sharyn Alfonsi and DeSantis. Alfonsi accused DeSantis of rewarding Publix, a contributor to his campaign, by giving Publix a role in covid vaccine distribution in Florida. DeSantis thoroughly rebutted Alfonsi’s accusation, so 60 Minutes simply deleted almost everything he said to make it look as though he had no real answer to Alfonsi.

Watched it once back in the day. Wasn’t impressed.

Journalism Is Pure Madness

1st April 2021

Toby Young.

Anyone even vaguely familiar with the controversy over the ‘OK’ symbol will knowhow ridiculous this is. For one thing, the identification of that gesture with white supremacy was originally a hoax perpetrated by 4chan, the image board website, to troll social-justice warriors and liberal journalists. For another, Isidorou was photographed committing this sin in February 2017, before the hoax had gained any traction. It wasn’t listed as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League until 2019, the same year as the New Zealand massacre referred to by the reporter. To accuse someone of a hate crime made up by a bunch of sophomoric pranksters is one thing. But to accuse them of it before the prank had landed must be some kind of record as the most feeble grounds for canceling someone in the history of cancel culture.

What makes a tragic death a major news story? The races of the perpetrators and the victims, of course. As the media goes all in on critical race theory, many journalists have decided to only provide obsessive coverage of horrific crimes when they can be used to advance the idea — as so eloquently explained by NBA star LeBron James — that minorities are being ‘literally hunted’ by evil white people.

Proof of this phenomenon has never been so clear as in the past several weeks.

ABC Spews Lies About GOP Targeting Biden’s ‘Black Voters’ With Reforms

ABC News was obviously working as an arm of the Biden administration during Sunday’s Good Morning America, as they spewed lies and misinformation about Republican efforts to increase the integrity of our elections. Despite claiming the GOP were targeting “black voters who helped him win there in Georgia,” the network refused to explain exactly how the law and other proposed bills would do that. It’s not just the bedraggled band of “never Trump” Republican refugees on MSNBC and elsewhere who are endlessly vexed. For four long years, the whole mainstream media sphere has been laced with talk about the need for a healthy GOP, a vibrant two-party system, and a return to true conservative values. Critiques of that system, like Lee Drutman’s “Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop,” only get a fraction of the attention devoted to these themes. But even more absent is any discussion of what a responsible conservatism might actually look like.

As you might expect, a ‘responsible conservatism’ looks just like … liberalism! My, what a surprise.

Washington Post Fact Checkers Correct Biden, Gently

28th March 2021

Paul Mirengoff at PowerLine.

The fact checkers at the Washington Post are biased, but not corrupt. They will fact check and correct false statements by Democrats.

But when it comes to rating the false statements — a highly subjective exercise — they are more forgiving of Democrats. They tend to go light on the number of “Pinocchios” they award Dems, compared to Republicans. And it’s my impression that they are more inclined to fact check statements by Republicans than those of Democrats.
