One of the unexamined parts of the current crisis in the West is that much of it is related to an opposition to nationalism. It is an axiom of the ruling ideology that nationalism is the worst thing ever and that stamping it out is a primary concern. In Europe, there are laws against the concept. People are jailed for promoting it. In the United States, nationalism is linked to the deadly sin of racism. The term white nationalism has become a synonym for racism and antisemitism.

Without much evidence, it is asserted that nationalism is the cause of the great horrors of the modern age. For generations now children have been taught that nationalism was the cause of the two great industrial wars of the 20th century. Paradoxically, they also are taught that nationalism is to blame for colonialism. Today it is claimed that white people being themselves as a people, currently called whiteness, is the cause of everything that ails nonwhites in the West.

I have now looked through all of the latest IPCC report. I say “looked through” because the report, including the Summary for Policymakers, is huge, just under four thousand pages. I looked over all of it, read only bits of particular interest to me.

One complication in writing about it is that the main report has, across every page in large light grey letters, “ACCEPTED VERSION SUBJECT TO FINAL EDITING,” and at the bottom of every page, “Do Not Cite, Quote or Distribute.” I will limit myself to describing what is in it and where but not actually quoting. The restriction is not present in the Summary for Policymakers, however.

A mob last week rampaged through downtown Portland, Ore. Police were unable to control the crowd, however, because of restrictive measures passed this year by the Democratic state legislature.

A crowd of 100 people on Oct. 12 smashed windows and graffitied buildings, causing more than $500,000 in damage, police said. The violence followed a memorial to a Portland anarchist who in 2019 was hit by a car and killed.

Police made no arrests at the protest and did not directly intervene. Officers said their hands were tied by a state bill, passed in June, that in most situations restricts police from using crowd-control devices such as pepper spray and rubber bullets.

Sometime in the early 1990s a friend suggested that I watch a movie called The Handmaid’s Tale. I was vaguely aware of the book…I knew it was authored by some ugly old bat from Canada, and honestly you couldn’t have paid me enough to read it. But I have a fondness for dystopian sci-fi, and my friend was like, “The movie’s really good! Give it a try.”

As it was on cable and didn’t cost me anything, I figured, sure.

I’m going on memory here, but this is what I recall. Most of the world’s women have been rendered infertile by the Evils of Man, a theme incredibly common in dystopian sci-fi but that withered old bag probably thought she was the first to think of it. And the movie starts with women being processed to sort the barren from the birthing.
