George Santos Outs the Woke Liberal Media

31st December 2022

Newsbusters.

Well, isn’t this rich. Republican Congressman-elect George Santos has been caught flatfooted, lying about all manner of things — his education, job history, religion, his mother’s death and more.

The lib media has, but of course, gone crazy with this. Doubtless, beyond the lying itself, this focus on Santos is partially driven by the battle to elect the next GOP Speaker of the House. Embattled GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy needs every vote he can get – and that would include a Santos vote, presuming Santos does not resign before the election on January 3rd. Something that as this is written appears unlikely.

But there’s more here than meets the eye.

Over there at The American Spectator, columnist (and colleague) Scott McKay has noted – correctly in my view – something very curious. How was Santos able to tell these lies and get away with it in his election? Says Scott: “He realized that Stupid Woke America values ‘diversity’ over competence or merit, and so he fed Stupid Woke America what it wanted.”

If I were Congressman Santos, the first assignment I would give to my staff would be to list all of the various ‘lies’ the Narrative Media accuse me of telling, then dig into the records of every Democrat member of Congress and post a list of those who did the exact same thing without any complaint from the Usual Suspects. (One might start with Alcee Hastings, who was impeached and removed as a Federal judge for bribery and then went on to a ‘distinguished’ career as a corrupt black Congressman, re-elected again and again by the stupid black people of his district.)

WORST OF 2022: The Craziest Analysis Award

31st December 2022

Newsbusters.

It was a challenging task but an esteemed panel of NewsBusters editors led by MRC President L.Brent Bozell and MRC’s Vice President for Research and Publications Brent Baker boiled down all the biased outbursts from lefty hack hosts, anchors, reporters and pundits in 2022 and on December 15 announced The Brian Stelter Memorial Award for Quote of the Year.

Of course, every year there is way too much bias for just one category. So Baker led a panel of NewsBusters editors to break down the Worst of 2022 into eight additional categories (The GOP Will End Democracy Award; The Damn Those Conservatives Award; The Praising and Protecting Old Joe Award; The Media Heroes Award; The Cursing the Conservative Court Award; The Joy of Hate Award for Joy Reid Rants; The Craziest Analysis Award and the Celebrity Freak-Outs Award).

Rachel Levine Targets Transgender Heresy for Big Tech Suppression

29th December 2022

Read it.

Dr. Rachel Levine, a man who identifies as a woman, urged doctors at state medical boards to pressure Big Tech to stifle “medical misinformation” right after he declared that there is no “scientific or medical dispute” about the benefits of using experimental drugs and surgeries to force male bodies to resemble female bodies or vice versa.

Levine, the assistant secretary of health at the federal Department of Health and Human Services, presented an extremely dubious worldview as the established position of science, and acted as though no rational person would dare dissent.

Politics and the English Language, 2023

29th December 2022

Read it.

“Politics and the English Language” addressed the jargon, double-talk, and what we would now call “spin” that had already distorted the discourse of the mid-20th century. “In our time,” Orwell argued, “political speech and writing are largely the defence of the indefensible. … Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness. … Political language—and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists—is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” Those are the sentences most cited whenever a modern leader or talking head hides behind terms like “restructuring” (for layoffs), “visiting a site” (for bombing), or “alternative facts” (for falsehoods). In his essay, Orwell also cut through the careless, mechanical prose of academics and journalists who fall back on clichés—“all prefabricated phrases, needless repetitions, and humbug and vagueness generally.”

These objections still hold up almost 80 years later, but historic changes in taste and technology mean that they apply to a new set of unexamined truisms and slogans regularly invoked less in oratory or print than through televised soundbites, online memes, and social media: the errors of reason and rhetoric identified in “Politics and the English Language” can be seen in familiar examples of empty platitudes, stretched metaphors, and meaningless cant which few who post, share, like, and retweet have seriously parsed. Consider how the following lexicon from 2023 is distinguished by the same question-begging, humbug, and sheer cloudy vagueness exposed by George Orwell in 1946.

Dangerous Dictionaries

28th December 2022

Read it.

For decades, progressives have focussed their attention on the restriction of free speech. This is crucial when you favour emotion over facts, because it helps to deny the others access to, well, facts. Since the 1990s, political correctness has shrunk the ever-narrowing boundaries of ‘acceptable speech,’ under the guise of not causing offense, naturally. Fast-forward 30 years, and such compassion has morphed into ‘hate speech’ and ‘hate crime’ laws, for anyone brave enough to test such matters out in court. For those who doubt the seriousness of the matter, Europe is currently awash with such sham trials—the latest being the investigation and possible 3-year imprisonment of filmmaker Tonje Gjevjon, for the crime of saying that “Men cannot be lesbians.”

More recently, the Left have shifted tactics, infiltrating the lexicon with political alternatives to existing words which require no updating. Consider the rivers of ‘neopronouns’ (e.g. ‘ze’ and ‘zir’), which lend ill-warranted authority to the notion that biological sex is not binary; aided and abetted by the fact that one in five of us already know someone who uses these newly invented pronouns seriously. Or how about the umbrella term ‘people of colour,’ which purports to be an inoffensive term for non-whites, but is in fact heavily-loaded to secure priority status without having to earn it. This is perhaps best exemplified by the outraged objections of ‘racism’ to legitimate criticism of Meghan Markle (a woman you’d be hard-pushed to pick out of a Downton Abbey line-up), while identical criticism of Prince Harry goes unchallenged.

Covid Vaccines Averted 3 Million Deaths in U.S., According to New Study

13th December 2022

Read it.

Rather than modeling population-level effects, the team of researchers from the University of Maryland, York University, and the Yale School of Public Health used a computational model that allowed them to incorporate factors like waning immunity or different age groups’ eligibility for vaccines and boosters into their calculations.

So these conclusions aren’t based on actually evidence, but on a model–just like the ‘climate change’ models!–and we all know how accurate those are.

Fung noted that adding all of these parameters together creates more statistical uncertainty in the data, meaning that there’s a larger margin for error in the study’s final results.

No shit.

The authors acknowledge this uncertainty by providing “credible intervals” for their calculations — ranges that show, for example, that their estimates for the number of averted deaths would be between 3.1 million and 3.4 million.

Handwavium.

The people who claim that vaccines saved lives depend on massaging various statistics for their ‘proof’–and, as any Real Scientist will tell you, correlation does not imply causation.

The only way to know for sure that a vaccine improved the outcome from COVID is to be able to demonstrate the precise mechanism whereby somebody would have died without the vaccine, and that they are unable to do. Or you could clone a particular person, give one the vaccine, and then give them both COVID and see what happens–which, again, they are unable to do. Without that, there are so many individual variables that the results can be played like a guitar to get the result you are looking for. That’s why some people respond to medications differently than others, and no doctor can predict how any individual patient will respond to any particular treatment.

Flashback: Saluting Teenage Radical as “Person of the Year”

11th December 2022

Read it.

This year, Time’s “Person of the Year” was a no-brainer — Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose decision to stay and fight the Russian invasion of his country had a profound effect on events in Europe and the rest of the world.

But three years ago, the same magazine’s editors made the ridiculous choice of making the radical activist Greta Thunberg their “Person of the Year” for 2019, when she was just 16 years old. The idea seemed frivolous then and seems even more preposterous now, as Thunberg has become even more extreme in her views.

Facebook Reverses Policy on Human Trafficking Posts

11th December 2022

Read it.

Facebook is reversing the controversial policy put in place early this year, first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, that allowed for users to solicit human traffickers to smuggle them across the border.

The social media giant, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, announced Thursday in a policy memo that, going forward, users are forbidden from posting any content that “offers to provide or facilitate human smuggling” or “asks for human smuggling services.” The platform previously held that these types of posts were needed to protect human rights.
