More Screaming in the White House Briefing Room

22nd March 2023

Read it.

The White House press corps is a microcosm of the national media. It is overwhelmingly liberal, stuffed with Biden voters. So it was downright weird when former press secretary Jen Psaki told the Los Angeles Times she sometimes thought “I am an orderly in an insane asylum.”

The briefing room is usually a tank of hungry sharks for a Republican press secretary, and a classroom full of teacher’s pets for a Democrat press secretary. The news cycle has to be pretty negative for reporters to sound hostile to Biden’s press aides.

On March 20, black reporter Simon Ateba from an obscure website called “Today News Africa” began screaming at the very top of the briefing that current press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was not calling on him so he could ask his questions. Other reporters joined the fight, insisting Ateba press his complaints off camera.

Ateba has obviously internalized the obvious fact that black people are entitled to act in ways that would get non-black people sat on.

WATCH: Award-Winning Journalist Compares Donald Trump, Republicans to Ku Klux Klan

1st February 2023

Read it.

Former president Donald Trump and the Republican Party are driven by “the exact same things that drove the [Ku Klux] Klan movement of the 1920s,” according to Wesley Lowery, the former Washington Post reporter best known for winning the Pulitzer Prize after being arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant during a riot in Ferguson, Mo., and spending several minutes in jail.

Let’s Go Crazy, Star Tribune Edition

1st February 2023

Scott Johnson at Power Line.

Minneapolis’s Star Tribune illustrates how the major daily newspaper of a metropolitan area can contribute to its decline. The owner of the newspaper has a high tolerance for mediocrity and the local news reads like public relations for Minnesota’s DFL. Today’s case in point is Briana Bierschbach’s page-one story on the new abortion law Democrats rammed through the legislature in record time: “Gov. Tim Walz signs law strengthening abortion rights in Minnesota.” Subhead: “It’s the first in a series of bills that Democrats say will help guarantee access to the procedure for decades to come.” This is today’s page one above the fold, just beneath the Star Tribune logo.

The text of Bierschbach’s story reminds me of Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration.” Here is how the song goes: “This is your celebration / Celebrate good times, come on / Let’s celebrate /Celebrate good times, come on / Let’s celebrate / There’s a party going on right here / A celebration to last throughout the years.” It’s the unmistakable subtext of Bierschbach’s story.

One problem with the story is its failure to explain what the bill actually accomplishes. Even readers who are inclined to agree, as most undoubtedly do, won’t get it.

16 Hours With George Santos: Dunkin’ Donuts, 27,000 Steps and a Scolding

31st January 2023

Politico.

Our intrepid reporter camped outside the office of Congress’ most scandal-plagued freshman, so you don’t have to.

They’re actually paying people to do this.

It’s 11:05 a.m. on a Tuesday, and none of the 20 or so reporters huddling outside George Santos’ congressional office wants to grab the last of twelve donuts he brought to the Longworth House building. The gaggle has been here for hours, camped out next to a cardboard carafe of coffee rapidly growing stale. Around 8 a.m., Santos had waltzed in, ceremoniously plopping a Dunkin’ Donuts bag on a side table placed outside L-1117, a confectionery bounty. He didn’t need to be here so early (his first vote is at 6:30 p.m.), but he had teased a “surprise” the day before on Twitter, “for the ‘journalists’ assigned to stake out side [sic] of my office,” the quotation marks smacking of cheerful condescension. “I brought you guys some donuts!” he exclaims. “Donuts and coffee, for all the hard work you guys do.”

“Thank you. Seriously,” he says, by now half-inside his office, just before the door swings shut against the videographers and photographers and reporters, all of whom crave answers more than pastries.

And George Santos is in his Congressional office laughing like a loon….

The New York Times Finally Finds a Scientist It Doesn’t Like

31st January 2023

Read it.

On paper, Dr. Julie Goodman is exactly the kind of seasoned scientific expert the New York Times would typically venerate.

She received her Ph.D. in toxicology from Johns Hopkins University. She taught at Harvard’s School of Public Health. She served as a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute. And she’s now affiliated with both the American College of Epidemiology and the Academy of Toxicological Sciences. She believes in “the science.”

There’s just one problem. Goodman doesn’t think the federal government should come into your home and rip out your gas stove. In her (expert) opinion, studies linking the suddenly controversial appliance to childhood asthma are flawed. They don’t justify dramatic action.

An Idiot’s Guide to Glowing Coverage in the New York Times

28th January 2023

Read it.

Searching for sympathetic coverage from the New York Times? Here’s a hack: Earn an advanced degree, then commit a violent crime in the service of your radical politics.

We have closely followed the cases of Urooj Rahman and Colinford Mattis, the New York City attorneys who tossed a Molotov cocktail into a police cruiser in May of 2020. Or, as the New York Times put it, their legal careers were sidetracked when “a Molotov cocktail ignited the center console of an empty police car during a Black Lives Matter protest.” Rotten luck!

Rahman went to Fordham. Mattis went to Princeton and NYU. They are precisely the sort of well-resourced and well-connected people that the New York Times is always telling us the criminal justice system favors—unjustifiably.
