In February 2023, the Bay Area Council Economic Institute issued a report that
analyzed business tax structures across 20 of the region’s largest cities. For each of
those cities, we calculated the annual business tax payment for three hypothetical
companies in office-based industries using business tax rates in each jurisdiction. In all
three examples, estimated tax liabilities in San Francisco were far beyond other Bay
Area cities – with only Oakland approaching a similar scale to San Francisco. As such,
we concluded that San Francisco’s business tax regime created a disincentive for
companies to add employment in the city and was a driving force behind relocations to
other parts of the Bay Area.

One reason is that the gap between the parties has grown in terms of goals and policy, and so there are few areas of agreement anymore. But that brings up another question: why has that happened? I think it was the fruit of a few decades of leftist indoctrination in the education system, plus the fall of the Soviets which allowed new generations to wax Romantic about socialism/Communism, the spread of leftist ideas online, and the presidency of Barack Obama – our first leftist president, as far as I know. He carefully calibrated his leftist policies to fit what the electorate could take, but he definitely moved the Overton Window to the left.

But it’s not just about policy, and in fact policy may be way way down on the list. To say it’s about power doesn’t really say much either, although power is a big draw for some people of a certain personality type. But power is also about money. With revelations such as this about the vast sums given to NGOs, for example, or Medicaid fraud (and kickbacks and/or payment in votes from the grateful fraudster community), not to mention speaking fees and insider trading and the like, there’s a lot of money to be had.

Trump in particular is a threat – not because he’s a “Nazi” – they clearly don’t mind Nazis if they’re Democrat Nazis – or an “authoritarian” (likewise; authoritarians are great if on the left). It’s because he’s actually serious about “draining the swamp,” which not only has the potential of cutting off the power they wield even when Republicans are in charge, but cutting off the money spigot or at least reducing it.

On Monday night, a mob of not-too-peaceful protesters gathered at a synagogue in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. They yelled angrily and, in some cases, harassed the Jews who happened to be there over what they say is the synagogue’s support of settlements in the West Bank.

Eileen Wang, mayor of Arcadia in California, resigned after agreeing to plead guilty to acting as a foreign agent of China, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Prosecutors said Wang and an associate operated a website presenting itself as a news source for local Chinese communities, but in reality used to spread pro-Chinese propaganda between 2020 and 2022, including material that denied allegations concerning the persecution of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and was shared rapidly after contact with Chinese officials.

The Democrat mayor also communicated with Chinese officials and John Chen, a senior intelligence-linked figure previously convicted in the United States, and co-operated with Yaoning Mike Sun, who later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison for acting as an illegal foreign agent.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, individuals who secretly act on behalf of foreign governments undermine democratic institutions, while officials said the case forms part of broader efforts to counter alleged Chinese influence operations in the United States.

City officials in Arcadia said the allegations were deeply troubling but emphasized that no city finances, staff, or decision-making processes were involved, noting that the conduct described occurred before Wang was sworn into office in December 2022. The FBI continues to investigate the case and related figures including John Chen and Yaoning Mike Sun, who have already received prison sentences.

Campaign spokesman Alex Stack said Bass will instead travel to Sacramento, where she will be “fighting for critical state funding for housing, homelessness, and Palisades recovery, and will also discuss the city and state partnership on the Olympics and World Cup,” according to City News Service.

“It’s time to move past debates,” Stack said on why the mayor pulled out of a scheduled debate with the primary election less than a month away.

Surely, the physical proximity to the White House was one factor in the Obamas’ decision; the 44th president officially visited his former vice president there at least once, with perhaps other unofficial visits as well.

But convenience of his physical proximity to the White House aside, Obama’s residential decision has proven to be even more symbolically potent. The 44th president has declared that he is still here and he is not going anywhere.

Some recent presidents, such as George W. Bush, have decided to ride off into the sunset and enjoy peaceful, private retirements after leaving the Oval Office. Bush even took up painting as a hobby. Obama is a golfer, but he seems to enjoy politicking and punditry more than the links.

Unfortunately, the American people are suffering the consequences of Obama’s insatiable desire to insert himself into the national conversation. He has been vocal in criticizing the Trump-era GOP and boosting Democrats on the campaign trail ever since making the 2-mile trek from the White House to Kalorama.

Maryland is one of many blue states that have transformed into a failed progressive experiment, where net migration flows are negative as productive, working-class taxpayers flee the state, not just because of high taxes and the power bill crisis, but also because they’ve had enough of left-wing politicians and their failed criminal justice and social reforms that have fueled a decade of violent crime chaos.

Reaction after reaction follows a pattern that shows zero understanding of the fact that states have different rules from each other about how to accomplish redistricting, and that Virginia didn’t follow its own rules. A lot of tweets and comments follow a “they did it in [fill in the blank with a Republican-controlled state], so why can’t we do it in Virginia?” Well, because Virginia has different rules, and this is a state-by-state proposition.

Once again, I don’t think this is mere stupidity. The concept of federalism is not a difficult one, and I’m pretty sure these people could easily master it. Their reaction is politically motivated, of course. To me, it also indicates the desire for states all to have the same rules, and for those rules to always favor Democrats. Plus, I think these tweets come from people who may (accent on the “may”) know better, but who count on the idea that their readersdon’t know better and are trying to stir them up to rage. It’s one of the reasons Democrats want education to be leftist indoctrination that keeps people ignorant of some very important facts about our government and our history.

One of the co-authors of California’s controversial ‘one-time’ tax on billionaires appeared to suggest that the levy could extend beyond a single imposition.

Marxist economics professor Emmanuel Saez, who hails from France, made the comment during a Tuesday debate against economist Arthur Laffer at the University of California, Berkeley.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a one-time tax. Because you can’t surprise billionaires more than once,” Saez said. “Even then, maybe some of them were expecting something like this. So, it’s going to be a debate about this time, you know, a permanent wealth tax at a low rate that’s going to last for a number of years.”

Minnesota Senate Democrats recently voted – unaminously – against removing deceased persons from the state’s voter rolls.

This tracks with the fact that almost 100% of dead people vote for Democrats, making them Democrats’ most loyal voting bloc, even surpassing that of serial killers.

(This may explain why, historically, Democrat gerrymandering seems designed to encompass as many cemeteries as possible. O.K., that is just an unfounded assertion, but it seems likely, does it not?)

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been roundly scorned after she claimed on a podcast this week that the idea anyone can earn their way to billionaire status is a “myth.”

“You can’t earn a billion dollars. You just can’t earn that,” the Bronx and Queens rep told comedian Ilana Glazer on Thursday on the latter’s podcast, “It’s Open.” “You can get market power, you can break rules, you can do all sorts of things.

“You can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than what they’re worth. But you can’t earn that, right? And so you have to create a myth that — since you didn’t earn that, you have to create a myth of earning it.”

AOC doubled down in a post on X Thursday evening, writing: “The single largest form of theft in America is wage theft. $50 billion a year are stolen from American workers … Some people get enraged that I draw attention to this. That’s on them. Let them call me shrill, dumb, inexperienced, girly, uneducated – these folks will say anything to distract from or undercut the truth that working people are getting screwed, and giving people a fair shake means we must have a grown conversation about reigning [sic] in abuse of power.”

A dozen Democrat-led states declared victory Thursday in a legal battle that effectively checked off two priorities from a liberal coalition’s 2024 template for blue states to thwart President Donald Trump’s agenda.

An attachment to a Dec. 13, 2024, email to the coalition Governors Safeguarding Democracy outlined the organization’s priorities to oppose then-President-elect Trump through litigation and policy battles, including opposition to deporting illegal aliens and efforts to prevent the loss of federal funding.

In the Thursday action, the Department of Homeland Security dropped an appeal to withhold Federal Emergency Management Agency funding from sanctuary jurisdictions, which had originally prompted the 12-state lawsuit against the administration.

A top House Democrat is being accused of breaking federal law after she admitted to meeting with foreign ambassadors about getting oil to Cuba’s communist regime despite U.S. sanctions, defending the outreach as “literally our right and responsibility.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D?Wash., made the remarks during a recent briefing in Seattle following a congressional delegation trip to Cuba, where she discussed the island’s worsening fuel shortages and U.S. policy toward the communist regime.

“I was in conversations with ambassadors from Mexico and some other places … trying to figure out how to get oil there,” Jayapal said during the briefing, describing conditions on the island as “a crisis beyond imagination.”

Dell Technologies’ Board of Directors unanimously approved a proposal to move the company’s state of incorporation from Delaware to Texas. This adds to the growing trend of redomiciliation, with companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, Coinbase, Affirm, TripAdvisor, eXp World Holdings, and others moving from Delaware to business-friendly states.

Shareholders will vote on the redomiciliation at Dell’s upcoming 2026 annual meeting on June 25. “The proposed redomestication would align Dell Technologies’ state of incorporation with its roots and long-standing center of operations,” the company wrote in a press release.

Dell said the move would align its legal home with its corporate origin story: Michael Dell founded the company in Austin in 1984, and today Dell’s headquarters, CEO, and largest concentration of U.S. employees are all based in Texas.

Reality TV personality and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt released a hard-hitting ad last week criticizing Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman for their “failed leadership” in response to the Palisades fires and homelessness crisis—so far it has received more than 12 million views.

Released April 29, the ad shows the two Democrats’ posh homes and neighborhoods, which are contrasted with Pratt’s own neighborhood, which burned to the ground in the Palisades fires of January 2025.

“They don’t have to live in the mess they created … they let my home burn down,” Pratt says in the video.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones asked the Virginia Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by Judge Hurley in Tazewell that blocked the State Board of Elections from certifying the results of the April 21 redistricting referendum. That is notable—so is the justices’ denial of that motion.

First, most anyone that remembers 2020 knows that the first response from anyone, when confronted with proof that shenanigans had taken place during the presidential election, is “the vote has been certified and there is no changing it.” That gets used to justify statements that the 2020 election was unchallenged.

It appears that what the attorney general was trying to do was force the state Supreme Court’s hand by claiming that one district court didn’t have the standing to stop a whole state-wide certification. Jones also argued, with a straight face, that because the redistricting his party supported would eat into the time for candidates to know what district they were running for and if any primaries needed to take place. Any delay could be seen as “vote suppression.”

Had he been successful, any ruling regarding the legality of the referendum would meet the same response the questions about 2020 meet: “So sorry, already certified.” That makes the second part of this compelling.

Many people are familiar with the “blue state exodus” over the past several years, but are they aware of the blue city business exodus?

It might be one of the biggest economic stories in modern US history, and Democrats are trying to keep it as quiet as possible. There is a blood letting going on in blue cities; a financial disaster in the making. And, like most financial disasters, it will probably be ignored until the house of cards comes crashing down completely.

For this examination let’s look at three very different examples, all facing similar crises. We start in New York City, where taxes have been consistently increased in order to offset the loss of billions in public revenues due to citizens leaving. NYC has experienced a net loss of around 220,000 residents since 2021, but it’s not the number of residents that is most important. Rather, it is the wealth of those residents that matters.

During the California gubernatorial debate, Tom Steyer, who is a billionaire, claimed that the billionaires are out to get him.

“The billionaires and corporations are spending big in this race to oppose me and to support the other people on this stage,” he claimed.

This same statement is made by every Democrat in any race above the level of dog catcher, but when it’s being made by a candidate who is not only a billionaire, but whose only reason for running in any race is being a billionaire, that takes it to a whole other level of hypocritical grifting.

If Steyer were just a working class Bay Area millionaire like Gov. Gavin Newsom or Rep. Ro Khanna, but without their good hair and the connections to the Getty family, Willie Brown and Jeffrey Epstein, no one would have let the confused old leftist run for any kind of public office.

With billions in his pocket, Steyer is able to put $133 million on the table and buy himself a place as the front runner in the race after the previous front runner turned out to be a sex predator.

Democrats depend heavily on billionaire money and on claiming to hate billionaires while promising to tax billionaires, which they somehow never get around to actually doing.

Elizabeth Warren has built an entire political career on presenting herself as the righteous defender of ordinary Americans against powerful corporations.

Every speech is some variation of the same script: she’s fighting for workers, fighting for consumers, fighting for families, and standing up to greedy executives and monopolistic corporations that are supposedly rigging the system against everyone else. It is a message carefully designed to make her sound like a populist champion of the middle class while putting a polish on inherently broken socialist ideas.

When her flawed ideology collides with reality, it repeatedly produces outcomes that hurt the exact people she claims to represent. Spirit Airlines may be one of the clearest examples yet.

When JetBlue moved to acquire Spirit in 2022, Warren treated the deal like it was Apple, Netflix, Meta, Microsoft, Google, Amazon and the Third Reich all merging into one new authoritarian Orwellian company called Dystopian Evil Holdings, LLC.

She aggressively pushed regulators to block it, warning that the merger would reduce competition and raise ticket prices. The Biden administration’s Department of Justice embraced that argument and sued to stop the acquisition, ultimately succeeding when a federal judge blocked the deal.

As a result it went bankrupt, all of its shareholders lost their money, and all of their employees lost their jobs.

Way to go, Democrats!

Maine Gov. Janet Mills has suspended her Senate campaign after failing to raise enough money to compete with socialist Graham Platner, who will now almost certainly face the perpetual centrist Republican Susan Collins in the general.

Chuck Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Kirsten Gillibrand immediately backed Platner, proving that there’s virtually nothing a leftist can say or do that is disqualifying.

So, for 20 years, you’ve had a Totenkopf tattoo, which depicts a skull and crossbones, most famously used by Hitler’s Schutzstaffel, the paramilitary organization that led, planned and executed the Holocaust?

Many of us grew up in times when our public workers were deservedly revered. This was because they were positive and helpful despite being both overworked and underpaid.

Those days are long gone. Today, most public employees seem either apathetic or simply unwilling to help the taxpayers who pay their salaries. To make matters worse, today they are paid much better than their private industry equivalents.

That was colorfully announced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in a recent news release. The statisticians responsible told taxpayers that private industry employees make an average of $32.37 per hour, and that their counterparts in state and local governments make $40.24 per hour.

This difference is more significant when benefits are added to the picture. Each private industry employee receives an average of $13.68 per hour in benefits, compared to $25.04 per hour for the poor, humble public employee. That is an overall cost of $46.05 vs. $65.28 for our public employees. That is a whopping difference.

The disparity is dramatically illustrated by the Los Angeles Unified School District’s move to give starting teachers an annual pay rate of $77,000 and 15-year veterans pay of $125,156. That is before a rich benefits package and on top of the perk of having summers off. Meanwhile, the district is an overstaffed operation with shrinking enrollment that matriculates poorly educated students.

Those figures are for the period ended September 2025. You might notice that federal employees are not included in this study, meaning the pay disparity between them and private sector workers might be even worse.

Think of it this way: When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to be harassed and ignored, the worker behind the counter is making more than the average person pleading to escape the DMV’s dysfunctional dystopia.

Seattle’s new socialist mayor is in the process of being mugged by reality and her response is to say that it’s, like, no big deal. Tee hee!

In a recently surfaced video from an event at Seattle University, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson—the West Coast Zohran Mamdani—was asked if Washington State’s new taxes are a good thing for the tax climate in her city. The state recently passed a “millionaire tax” along with several other significant tax increases.

This means that Seattle now has the highest state and local tax burden for high-income earners in the country.

California college graduates have been struggling to take their next steps into the career world. According to one congressman, the issue is not a lack of jobs, but a prioritization of foreign workers.

For years, the Golden State’s Bay Area has been a haven for jobs within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

But Republican Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt told the Daily Signal that companies and universities have been passing up American workers and instead relying on temporary employment tied to international students’ major area of study—known as Optional Practical Training (OPT).

“We went from displacing blue-collar workers with sending jobs overseas, and then illegal immigrants suppressing wages and taking other jobs,” Schmitt said. “Then you also have white-collar job issue[s] with H-1B visa[s], which we tried to highlight, but also displacing recent grads and American students through these programs like OPT.”

Democrats have an extremism problem, and it’s not clear how they can solve it. After yet another gunman tried to assassinate President Donald Trump at last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, liberals nobly renewed their commitment to moderation. “We need LESS violence in America, not MORE violence in America,” wrote CNN’s Van Jones. Quite right. But the American Left has not exactly put itself in a good position to calm down its radicals.

Consider: last Wednesday, the New York Times hosted superstar streamer Hasan Piker for a podcast with writer Jia Tolentino. Piker has fantasized on camera about murdering landlords and once told his viewers that “If you cared about Medicare fraud or Medicaid fraud, you would kill [Florida Senator] Rick Scott.” He joked with Tolentino about “microlooting”—that is, shoplifting—and equivocated about whether UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson deserved to die at the hands of his alleged murderer, Luigi Mangione.

Thompson “was engaging in a tremendous amount of social murder,” said Piker, citing Friedrich Engels to suggest that the killing was retribution for “systematized forms of violence” in the healthcare system. The latest Trump assassin wasn’t a radical. He was a Democrat.

There was nothing radical about Cole Tomas Allen: the attempted White House Correspondents’ Dinner assassin. Allen’s manifesto reads a lot like that of the previous three-named assassin Ryan Wesley Routh who was stalking President Trump at a golf game.

Apart from the explicit murder plots, there is nothing in Routh’s ‘Dear World’ letter and Allen’s manifesto that you wouldn’t find in the Washington Post, a Jimmy Kimmel or Stephen Colbert monologue or a rant by a Democrat member of Congress. Routh was obsessed with Iran and Ukraine, sounding like Thomas Friedman when he complained that Trump had “ended relations with Iran like a child and now the Middle East has unraveled.”

Allen offered even more generic foreign policy criticisms that seemed plucked from network newscasts and fake news coverage of Trump’s campaign against illegal alien criminals, drug cartels, Islamic terrorists in Iran and the cutoff of funds to USAID, ranting about being (“raped in a detention camp”, “fisherman executed without trial” “schoolkid blown up” or “a child starved”).

Did Allen really care about events in Iran or Latin America? Could he even tell them apart?

There are two distinct but related things going on with the Democrats. One is that the party is rapidly moving ideologically leftward and embracing previously inconceivable positions ranging from socialism to treason and the other is that much of the party is not ideologically radicalizing so much as it’s driven by a violently fervent hatred of Trump and a conviction that he’s Hitler.

This is not some grassroots phenomenon but the messaging from the top down of the party and its media apparatus. That’s why Allen’s views are entirely reflective of their rhetoric. He wasn’t a Marxist, a Communist or a Socialist… his views were those of the mainstream of his party. (The amount of distance between the Democrats and the Marxists of course is rapidly shrinking.)

ICE has arrested an illegal alien child sex predator in Abigail Spanberger’s Virginia. Authorities there tried to protect him by declining an ICE detainer last year and releasing him back into the community.

The suspect, Roni Mendez-Escobar, a Guatemalan national, faced charges including multiple felony counts of possession of obscene material and child pornography with intent to distribute.

remain free despite the detainer – exactly the outcome sanctuary policies are designed to produce.

This isn’t an isolated failure. It’s the predictable result of Virginia Democrats turning the state into a magnet for criminal illegal aliens while American families bear the cost. Spanberger ran as a “moderate,” yet her administration’s moves to limit cooperation with ICE have repeatedly put Virginia children and residents at risk.

Just weeks ago, ICE urged Spanberger not to release another criminal illegal alien from Guatemala, Misael Lopez Gomez, who allegedly bludgeoned his own three-month-old daughter to death with blunt force trauma in Fairfax.

Democrats are crazy and evil, but also utterly incompetent.

Notice something missing in that Associated Press story? “Assassination.” You could say, “an apparent assassination attempt,” or use the phrase “would-be assassin,” but the AP goes out of its way to avoid saying the obvious: THIS GUY WANTED TO KILL TRUMP.

Furthermore, despite cramming the story full of all kinds of irrelevancies — quotes from this or that politician in attendance — the AP doesn’t include important details about the suspect’s background: First, that Cole Allen donated to Kamala Harris’s campaign, and second, that there was a campaign sign for a Democratic candidate for a state judge position in the front lawn of Allen’s home in California. In other words, evidence clearly suggests the shooter is a Democrat with a political motive, but the Associated Press didn’t think that merited inclusion in the story.
