You can usually tell a controversial idea like the “billionaire tax” is bad when proponents start trotting out teams of Nobel Prize winners to defend it.

If the idea really were that good, you wouldn’t need more than one Nobel laureate to make the case. The “tell” is when they quote half a dozen, as if there were a Nobel Prize for groupthink.

Six Nobel Prize-winning economists recently signed a letter urging Californians to pass Proposition 40, the one-time 5% tax on the wealth of the state’s billionaires.

People always forget that the Nobel Prize is awarded by socialists to socialists. When a talking parrot like Paul Krugman can get a Nobel prize, it’s worth is exactly zero.

The letter is wrong about everything, from the history of wealth taxes to the proceeds California can expect the tax to provide.

The letter calls Prop. 40 “the first-ever tax on billionaire wealth enacted anywhere in the world.” Governments have taxed billionaires’ net wealth for decades.

Twelve European countries imposed annual net wealth taxes in the 1990s. They raised very little revenue, cost a lot to administer, pushed investment out of their countries, and were politically unpopular. All but three of the European wealth taxes have been repealed.

Amazing how that works. Less amazing is the amount of lying—or, to be kind, ignorance—that proglodyte proponents marshal to back their Risky Schemes (to quote AlGore).

The letter claims that California billionaires paid income tax equal to just 1.6% of their wealth gains. This is also misleading. 1.6% is not an income-tax rate. It is income taxes paid divided by an increase in estimated asset values, much of it unrealized.

We don’t tax gains on paper. Not for the rich, and not for the middle class. If we did, homeowners would have to pay a tax every year that their home went up in value, even if they were still living in it.

But would you get a payment if your ‘wealth’ went down in value? Of course not. Payments to the government only go in one direction.

The Nobel laureates assert that “it is unlikely any significant number of billionaires successfully cut ties with the Golden State” before the Jan. 1, 2026, effective date of the tax.

But Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Peter Thiel, Don Hankey, Travis Kalanick, Steven Spielberg, and David Sacks all reportedly left before the cutoff. Stanford University economists Joshua Rauh and Benjamin Jaros found that nearly 30% of the expected taxable wealth left California before the measure even qualified for the ballot.

Gee, who could have predicted that?

When it was reported that Paramount is considering leaving California, many politicians looked for ways to keep one of the largest moviemakers in Hollywood. But few looked for reasons why employers are packing their bags in the first place.

Chevron, Tesla, Oracle, and more Fortune 500 companies have already left for other states. And all cited an unfriendly business environment.

High taxes and onerous regulation are big parts of that story, but California’s legal environment has also chased big taxpayers out of the state.

The Golden State is a troubling example of what happens when workplace litigation becomes an industry unto itself. From the beginning of this year through August, nearly 2,000 California workplace disputes reportedly settled for a combined $1.63 billion. Some undoubtedly involved workers who had been genuinely wronged and were entitled to compensation.

But over the years, an enormous cottage industry has grown from workplace lawsuits and employment claims, in part because many employers acknowledge that even claims with some merit can cost enormous sums to defend.

Sometimes paying a settlement is simply cheaper than proving you did nothing wrong.

“Sue and settle” has been a guaranteed money-maker for trouble-makers for too long.

The Daily Signal has learned from top Democrat staffers that the 120th Congress will include a new “Squad” of Democratic Socialists of America members, called “the bloc,” with at least seven anti-capitalist members.

The bloc will include two of the remaining members of the original Squad, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

The new members likely include two progressives running in New York’s Democrat strongholds, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, who have both expressed their disgust for the United States, as well as Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb, who has faced criticism for providing cover to Islamic extremists.

Melat Kiros, who refused to condemn the Islamic arsonist who killed a Holocaust survivor last year, is now running in a Democrat congressional district in Colorado to be another member of the so-called bloc.

Donavan McKinney, a far-left Michigan state representative, is months away from representing Detroit in the “bloc.”

Chuck Schumer knows that the Civil Rights Division of DOJ is sending hundreds of lawyers to observe the action in swing state polling places. ICE might even be on hand to see who turns up.

So, Chuck Schumer is pretending that the Republicans will try to do what the Democrats actually did in several previous elections (including the last midterm, 2022, viz., AZ, GA, NV), and would have liked to do in this midterm, but can’t. The Democrats will holler like crazy about it before the election to plant this idea in credulous minds. They will jump up and down going woo-woo-woo on Election Day itself to water the idea. And after the election they will blitz every critical precinct with lawsuits to prevent the vote from being certified, using select “activist” judges to issue TROs and writs to delay election results and de-legitimize the vote.

And if none of that avails – which it won’t – they’ll call out their ground troops, Antifa, BLM, Free Palestine, LGBTQ2S+, the furious transsexuals, the hysterical cat ladies, and suchlike to make a giant ruckus so as to provoke the president to invoke emergency powers to quell the mayhem. And then they’ll point at Mr. Trump shrieking, “See! Tyrant!”

Chuck Schumer is such a shithead. Everybody knows that he intends for the Democratic Party to inflict lawfare and commit warfare on the midterm election (in that order), and hence on the American people, behind an Alinsky-grade cloud of gaslight claiming the other side is doing it.

The same left-wing activist groups that oppose President Donald Trump’s enforcement of immigration law also appear to be mobilizing against the Census Bureau’s proposed rule to exclude illegal aliens from the 2030 census for purposes of determining seats in the House of Representatives and votes in the Electoral College.

Critics see this mobilization as evidence of maneuvering for political advantage.

“The Left opposes deportations and supports counting illegal aliens for congressional apportionment for the same reason—to maintain their own political power,” Lora Ries, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center, told the Daily Signal in a statement Thursday.

The Census Bureau argues that apportionment should be based on a person’s “usual residence,” as the census traditionally includes members of the military stationed overseas and excludes tourists.

Under the proposed rule, the Census Bureau would exclude illegal aliens and other non-permanent residents from the apportionment count.

Adriel I. Cepeda Drieux, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Voting Rights Project, told NPR her group is considering litigation, saying the rule would “fly against centuries of constitutional tradition in the United States.”

Customary practice doesn’t trump the Constitution … or the law. We haven’t before had organized groups of people attempting to allow millions of illegal immigrants swamp our territory, and changing facts on the ground ought to lead to changing practices.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two Muslim holidays into law this week, making California the second state to officially recognize them.

On Sunday, Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2017 into law, which will make Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha state holidays. That means public schools will be closed on those days and state employees will have the days off.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson also signed those holidays into law in 2025.

Eid al-Fitr is also called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” which coincides with the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar.

Eid al-Adha is called the “Festival of the Sacrifice,” typically lasts between three and four days and marks the culmination of the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

The bill was initially proposed by Assemblyman Matt Haney, a Democrat, and passed the California Assembly and Senate by near-unanimous margins.

Courier Newsroom, which has been fueled with at least $20 million between 2021 and 2023 alone by Soros, is making a “major bet” on weaponizing TikTok in order to sway votes.

Specifically, NewsGuard wrote that “Across 21 TikTok accounts — one for each state that Courier covers, plus a nationally focused account — Courier has generated an audience of 4.3 million followers and has collectively received 665.5 million likes on its videos.” Courier became infamous for spreading mass amounts of false information in past elections to manipulate voters.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed 21 bills on Sept. 29 aimed at limiting federal immigration enforcement in the state, including a ban on officers using shock gloves and a new 25 percent tax on private detention centers.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., called for the release of an Islamic militia leader convicted of having led, operated, and participated in actions that resulted in the deaths of Israelis in the early 2000s.

Khanna acknowledged Marwan Barghouti’s criminal conviction but still justified his remarks by stating that the militia leader is also a Palestinian politician who is well respected among Palestinian factions.

“Releasing Barghouti does not provide him with a pardon or moral absolution of crimes he may have committed,” Khanna said in a video he posted on X over the weekend.

“So long as occupation continues, the intifada will not stop,” Barghouti said as he entered an Israeli court in 2004. “As long as Palestinian mothers are weeping, Israeli mothers will also weep.”

Barghouti is serving five life sentences after having been convicted in 2004 of complicity, one count of attempted murder, and one count of membership in a terrorist group involved in a spree of attacks that claimed the lives of a Greek Orthodox monk in the West Bank in 2001, one Israeli at the Jewish settlement of Givat Zeev in 2002, and three people at a Tel Aviv seafood restaurant.

On Sunday, CNN’s State of the Union hosted Governor Wes Moore (D-Maryland). Bash questioned Moore about crimes committed by illegal immigrants, but the conversation quickly shifted to criticizing ICE. Moore claimed that ICE is bigger than the FBI and is putting “unaccountable and unqualified people” into communities.

Bash began the segment by focusing on the “illegal immigrant who was a rideshare driver” that raped his 17-year-old female passenger. She emphasized, “The fact is that Homeland Security is saying he was an undocumented immigrant and the Biden administration let him come in 2023.” Bash then asked Gov. Wes Moore whether he understood “how upset this makes people.” Then she allowed Moore to speak uninterrupted for a minute and a half.

Moore reassured the residents of Maryland that he has “no tolerance for violent offenders” and “there is nothing that we will not do to make sure that our communities are safe.” He confidently continued, “if someone commits a violent crime in our state, I want him in handcuffs in 24 hours and they will have accountability coming their way.”

A Democrat House candidate running for the Georgia General Assembly voted in both Nevada and Georgia primaries this year, casting two different votes in two different elections, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

According to records the AJC obtained through a public records request, David Dillie, the Democrat candidate for District 161, voted by absentee ballot in Nevada’s Republican primary election on June 9, roughly 2 1/2 years after he had moved back to Georgia.

District 161 includes a stretch of Savannah’s suburbs. According to AJC, Dillie is an aircraft mechanic at Gulfstream, a jet manufacturer based in Savannah.

Dillie is running against Republican Georgia state Rep. Bill Hitchens in the upcoming midterm election.

A teacher at the Michigan synagogue and preschool attacked by an Islamic terrorist in May stated that she would not be voting for Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, despite being a lifelong Democrat, because of his apparent lack of regard for the Jewish community.

After the attack took place, which began after a heavily armed Hezbollah-aligned terrorist rammed his car into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, El-Sayed justified the attack by stating that “hurt people hurt people.”

The attacker’s family members, who were also identified as Hezbollah fighters, were killed in Lebanon by an Israeli strike prior to the attack.

“Abdul El-Sayed stands for everything that I believe in, everything, except that he does not support the Jewish community,” Elise Otis, the teacher at Temple Israel, said. That is a big point for me. I have children, and God willing, will have grandchildren one day, and nieces and nephews, but he doesn’t support them, so I can’t support him.”

“I don’t feel safe, I don’t feel safe with him,” Otis added.

Last week California certified a Billionaire Wealth Tax for the November ballot: a 5 percent one-time levy on the state’s billionaires, paid out over five years, to raise about $20 billion a year for health care, food aid, and schools after federal cuts. We understand the impulse. The state has a revenue hole, and billionaires can afford to help fill it.

But the tax will fail at the thing it’s for, and it will fail for a simple reason: billionaires, unlike land, have feet.

We just spent months building the empirical case, calculating the aggregate of California’s land values, in a new report from the Center for Land Economics. The short version: land is one of the biggest pools of wealth there is, California has more of it than almost anything else, and it cannot leave the state.

The wealth tax’s own math assumes a $2 trillion base, which is a nearly 2x overestimate due to wealth flight.

Six California billionaires — Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Peter Thiel, Don Hankey, Travis Kalanick, and Steven Spielberg, worth roughly $540 billion combined — had already moved their tax residency out of state before the measure’s January 1, 2026 cutoff. Mark Zuckerberg (about $220 billion) followed in early 2026 and will almost certainly fight the retroactive reach in court. Add a roughly $200 billion overestimate that other economists have flagged in the proposal’s own model, and nearly half the assumed base is gone.

Not a single Democrat actively participated in Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on protecting women’s sports. Democrats did not show up, did not fill their two witness seats, or question the witnesses who were impacted by males competing in women’s sports.

Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin, the ranking member of the committee, claimed that America does not care about men competing in women’s sports and diverted his opening statement to his own agenda, then left. The other nine Democrat members on the committee did not show up.

According to polling, over 70% of Americans disagree with biological men competing in women’s sports, and over 60% favor laws that would require transgender athletes to compete on teams that match their biological sex instead of their gender identity.

Two leading progressive lawmakers, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar, are unveiling legislation Wednesday that would ban artificial superintelligence and create a federal agency to oversee advanced AI as some of the industry’s own leaders urge Congress to impose guardrails on the advancing technology.

The bill, provided first to The Associated Press, would also pause advanced AI development until guidelines are implemented while creating the Department of Artificial Intelligence. Multiple employees at leading AI companies are endorsing the bill.

Of the two things, the more important in the eyes of a statist like Bernie is the creation of a federal agency to ‘oversee’ it. The worst thing in the world, in the eyes of a typical statist Democrat, is for something, some area of human activity, to be ‘unregulated’. Whenever you hear Democrats fear-mongering about something, be it COVID or AI, is them beating the drum of “It’s unregulated!”

Whether heading into Chicago or leaving it behind on the Stevenson Expressway, commuters are driving past a new billboard campaign from Florida’s top business lobby.

Expanding its multimillion-dollar recruitment campaign into the Midwest, the Florida Chamber of Commerce is launching its next “Free Enterprise” billboard campaign targeting Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker as the Chamber says data shows billions of dollars in income moving from Illinois to Florida.

“The billboards will look very much like the billboard we did in New York, but we’ll have two of them in Chicago, and we’ll be naming Governor Pritzker the runner-up ‘Florida Economic Developer of the Year,’” Florida Chamber President and CEO Mark Wilson exclusively told Fox News Digital.

“This isn’t personal, right? This is about policy. And the person responsible for all of Illinois’s policies is the governor there, just like our governor in Florida has top responsibility for what we do here,” he added. “When we look at how unsafe Chicago is, when we look at the extraordinarily high taxes that we have in Chicago — I’m from there, by the way, and so I have firsthand knowledge on what’s happening in Illinois and what’s happening in Chicago… And all of Illinois is losing people, more businesses are leaving Illinois than are moving to Illinois, and Illinois is losing billions of taxable income. And so the whole state is in a death spiral.”

The network of liberal billionaire Michael Bloomberg appears to have taken a page from the George Soros playbook by backing groups specifically engineered to install radicals in state prosecutors’ offices who conform to his agenda.

The Washington Free Beacon reporter Thomas Catenacci released a damning report September 21 finding that the State Energy and Environmental Impact Center — backed by Bloomberg — quietly shut its doors following mounting congressional scrutiny.

The Center, which was housed at New York University School of Law, was designed specifically to provide “legal, analytic, and communications support, as well as facilitating coordination across multiple offices of state attorneys general” on the climate change boondoggle. As Catenacci noted, the radical group’s “signature initiative involved placing paid, climate-focused ‘fellows’ in Democrat-controlled state attorney general offices nationwide as those offices sued the oil industry and other energy providers.”

All ten ActBlue employees and board members deposed by House investigators have invoked the Fifth Amendment rather than answer questions about the Democratic Party’s dominant fundraising platform. Five of the ten are board members, all deposed in the past five weeks, and the three committees running the probe say they are not done. Their third report, released last week, alleged ActBlue accepted a substantial volume of foreign and fraudulent donations with minimal scrutiny.

It sounds crazy, but this kind of scenario is absolutely the norm for Democratic Socialist candidates: Being convicted of blatant criminal embezzlement is a badge of honor, not a disqualifying mark on their record. The complete inversion of moral standards is unsettling and it reinforces the need to prevent far-left activists from entering positions of local government.

Denver mayoral candidate, Shontel Lewis, stole thousands of dollars in EBT funds while working in the state food-stamp office in 2008. She says that the experience actually makes her “more qualified” for the job of mayor, ostensibly because this makes her more attuned to the needs of “struggling Denver citizens”.

Earlier this month, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger was finally clear about her permissive stance on boys in girls sports and bathrooms. During her campaign, though, she ran from a reporter and offered word salad answers whenever the issue came up.

On Sept. 8, from the stage at Virginia’s Pridefest in Richmond, Spanberger told the crowd she’d been moved to tears by a transgender-identifying child’s story and wanted LGBTQ+ Virginians to know they have a governor who values them.

And to that end, on July 30, six weeks before her emotional Pridefest remarks, she had quietly killed a Virginia Board of Health rulemaking process that would have barred males from competing in girls sports and using girls’ locker rooms and bathrooms.

Last week, Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed was the beneficiary of a massive fundraiser at the home of media producer Jeffrey Soros, yes, George’s nephew.

While a Soros raising money for a Democrat isn’t news—Uncle George and Cousin Alex have already contributed $102.8 million to races in 2026—it’s indicative of the hypocrisy of the Left.

El-Sayed has been outspoken in his aim of “getting money out of politics” while being bankrolled by his party’s “Daddy Warbucks.” Expensive campaigns can be a barrier for many candidates, but there are substantive and constitutional fixes beyond a blatant assault on the First Amendment (as per the Supreme Court), but for our purposes today, it leads us to Virginia’s constitutional amendments on the November ballot.

To date, based on Department of Elections data analyzed by the Virginia Public Access Project, the “Vote YES” campaigns are out-funding “Vote NO” efforts $3.75 million to $467,543. That’s not a typo: 9-to-1.

The abortion amendment is leading the way with $2.8 million for “Yes,” and then there’s the efforts of Winsome Earle-Sears.

The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) top lawyer accused a federal judge of working with other judges to block immigration law enforcement after the jurist said that the Trump administration’s Minnesota enforcement surge created “a grave threat to the rule of law.”

Texans who feel smug about California’s failing high-speed rail project should recognize that the Lone Star state has similar insane passenger rail programs. One leading one is Austin’s plan to build four three two rail lines totaling 39 31 20 miles in length in Austin. Though passed by voters in November 2020, what Austin is going to get is very different from what voters thought they were approving.

Even in Red states, the metropolitan cities (and the counties that surround them) tend to be pretty Blue. So these tragic stories will continue.

A Democrat may have just secured a midterm win for Republicans with one unexpected endorsement. House Democrat Jared Golden of Maine endorsed House Republican Mike Lawler of New York for reelection in an op-ed published in a newspaper in Lawler’s district Monday morning.

Golden published a glowing review of Lawler and their history of working together on bipartisan legislation in Congress. Since he is retiring this year and not seeking reelection, Golden is a free agent and does not have to fear party resentment.

Officials in Hennepin County, Minnesota, shut down a $2 million relief fund for businesses claiming to be affected by federal immigration enforcement after officials discovered widespread fraud among applicants, forcing them to end the program. The county board created the fund to help businesses “harmed” by Operation Metro Surge, the federal immigration enforcement operation that began in December 2025. Federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis in January, turning it into one of the most scrutinized immigration enforcement actions in the country.
