Nation’s Murderous Psychopaths Undecided on Whether They’ll Follow New Gun Laws

16th September 2019

Babylon Bee.

Democrats such as Beto O’Rourke have proposed a number of new gun laws, such as universal background checks, a ban on magazines that hold more than ten bullets, and possibly even a “mandatory buyback” of some weapons such as AR-15s. While these laws are likely to be a headache for law-abiding gun owners, the nation’s murderous psychopaths aren’t quite certain how the laws will affect them.

Food Thread: Corks And Bunnies

15th September 2019

Read it.

When I go shoppingf for wine, in particular everyday drinking wine, I give bonus points to wines with screw-tops. It’s more convenient, the bottles fit in the refrigerator more easily, and even ignoring the risk of TCA contamination, there is much less risk of failure. Everyone has seen crumbly corks and corks that broke off halfway out of the bottle, and that just doesn’t happen with screw-tops.

Wisdom Attend.

A World Empty of Moral Meaning

14th September 2019

Read it.

A friend who is a doctor told me—and therefore it must be true—that a well-known social media site has decided that from now on it will not publish how many people “liked” what people had posted on it because some posts attracted many more “likes” than others, thereby wounding the self-esteem of those whose posts were not much “liked.” From now on, the only person to know how many “likes” his post attracts will be the person who posted it. He will not be able to compare himself with others and will therefore be able to continue to think well of himself.

A Swiss House Built by Robots Promises to Revolutionize the Construction Industry

13th September 2019

Read it.

The three-level building near Zurich features 3D-printed ceilings, energy-efficient walls, timber beams assembled by robots on site, and an intelligent home system. Developed by a team of experts at ETH Zurich university and 30 industry partners over the course of four years, the DFAB House, measuring 2,370 square feet (220 square meters), needed 60% less cement and has passed the stringent Swiss building safety codes.

It also looks like a broken toy that somebody threw in the trash. This would appear to be an excellent illustration of the principle Just Because You Can Now Do Something A New Way Doesn’t Mean That You Ought To Do it.

Tom Smith of The Right Coast comments:

Evidently the construction industry is one of the most regulated, inefficient and corrupt businesses in the US. Just replacing human workers with robots and building offsite can save enormous amounts of money and time just by avoiding all the payoffs you have to make otherwise to get anything done. That’s why a lot of these houses are being built in China at the moment.

As usually happens, the things that activists bitch about are caused by the governments to which activists want to give greater power. ‘We’re from the government and we’re here to help.’ Help like that we don’t need.

UK: Vegetarians Cannot Be Victims of Discrimination, Judge Rules

13th September 2019

Read it.

He argued that, as a vegetarian, he should have the same rights as employees who suffer discrimination over their religious beliefs or sexual orientation, which are characteristics protected by the 2010 Equality Act.

But his claim was thrown out at an employment tribunal in Norwich, Norfolk, after a judge decided that vegetarianism was a “lifestyle choice” and does not qualify for protection under the Act.

Since we now know that there is no such thing as a ‘gay gene‘, this same logic ought to apply to perverts homosexuals.

Time to Abolish “Statistical Significance”?

13th September 2019

Read it.

Given the omnipresence of “statistical significance” in pedagogy and the research literature, it was interesting last year when the American Statistical Association made an official statement “ASA Statement on Statistical Significance and P-Values” (discussed here) which includes comments like: “Scientific conclusions and business or policy decisions should not be based only on whether a p-value passes a specific threshold. … A p-value, or statistical significance, does not measure the size of an effect or the importance of a result. … By itself, a p-value does not provide a good measure of evidence regarding a model or hypothesis.”

Jay, I’d like to hear your thoughts on this.

The Anti-Liberal Moment

13th September 2019

Read it.

One contemporary observer, a legal theorist in his mid-30s named Carl Schmitt, found the seeds of the crisis within the idea of liberalism itself. Liberal institutions like representative democracy, and the liberal ideal that all a nation’s citizens can be treated as political equals, were in his view a sham. Politics at its core is not about compromise between equal individuals but instead conflict between groups.

“Even if Bolshevism is suppressed and Fascism held at bay, the crisis of contemporary parliamentarism would not be overcome in the least,” he wrote in 1926. ”It is, in its depths, the inescapable contradiction of liberal individualism and democratic homogeneity.”

A voice of the Crust attempts to hijack classical liberalism in the service of the proglodyte Narrative.

Trevor Noah talks to an actual black guy about what they can do to spread the Narrative. (Trevor likes to check in with actual black people periodically to make sure he’s on track.)

Actually, the available evidence suggests that Democrats chiefly want to cause trouble while lining their own pockets, which is the only Stuff they really care about. That’s why it’s so common to see African politicians get busted for bribery, cronyism, and other types of corruption.

Watch What You Eat

12th September 2019

Read it.

As George Orwell once noted, “The worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents.” According to Orwell, the typical socialist is “either a youthful snob-Bolshevik … or, still more typically, a prim little man with a white-collar job, usually a secret teetotaler, and often with vegetarian leanings.” Orwell wrote those words in 1937, but they’re entirely recognizable today, especially the line about vegetarianism. There’s something about the left that makes them highly neurotic about food. That’s been true for generations, but there’s evidence the impulse is getting worse.

Catch that? Warren says you eat too many cheeseburgers — as if it’s any of her business. But that’s the thing: She actually thinks it is her business. They all think that. The activist left seeks to control everything you do, including what you put in your mouth. For the last few years, they’ve been pushing you to eat bugs. Recall this headline from The Washington Post: “Eating bugs can help the environment.” Or this one from The New York Times: “Why aren’t we eating more insects?” Bizarre. Why would they want you to eat insects? Because it’s repulsive and un-American, of course, and therefore, in the eyes of the left, it must be awesome. The more perverse and unnatural the better. That’s always been the left’s standard.

KISSASS—Keep It Short, Sad, And Simple, Stupid

12th September 2019

Read it.

It’s all right for successful, college-educated professionals like Lara Bazelon, Jeff Bercovici, Meghan Daum, and others to write about how much joy their working lives bring them. The people who edit the publications in which such articles appear are themselves college-educated professionals. They too probably enjoy their upper-middle-class lives. To my knowledge, when Bercovici wrote positively about his happy experience as a Forbes staff writer, no one accused him of sucking up to Steve Forbes, the magazine’s owner and publisher and a man whose net worth is estimated to be north of $400 million. When Meghan Daum enthuses about her work at Columbia University, no one accuses her of shilling for an institution with an endowment of more than $10 billion. Lara Bazelon has written for the Washington Post, which, like Amazon.com, is owned by Jeff Bezos. But as for as I know, no one has accused her of shilling for him.

But for working-class people, the rules are different. All those upper-middle-class professionals who edit the nation’s most prominent publications permit only one narrative when it comes to the toiling masses. Their lives are nasty, brutish, and short, and must always be portrayed as such. To publish a story about a person who enjoys working at Wal-Mart or Starbucks or Georgia Pacific or Amazon is considered tantamount to white-washing the horrific crimes (whatever those may be) of oligarchs such as the Walton family, Howard Schultz, the Koch brothers, or Bezos.

Married Man’s Death During Sex on Business Trip Ruled a ‘Workplace Accident’

11th September 2019

Read it.

I am not making this up.

A married man who died of a heart attack after having sex on a business trip in France was ruled to have been the victim of a workplace accident — making his company financially responsible, according to reports.

Engineer Xavier X was found dead in his hotel room in Meung-sur-Loire shortly after having sex with a local woman he’d just met, according to the Times of London.

Lawyers for his bosses at the Parisian railroad construction company TSO insisted he was not performing duties when he had the heart attack — blaming the “adulterous sex act that he had had with a complete stranger,” according to the report.

But appeals court judges ruled that an employee on assignment “is entitled to their employer’s protection for the duration of their mission … whether or not the accident takes place as part of a professional activity or as an act of normal life,” the report said.

That’s going to make for some pretty interesting expense reports.

What Is Socialism?

11th September 2019

John Hinderaker at Power Line takes a shot.

The meaning of “socialism” has evolved; or, one might say, it is flying under a false flag. When Democratic politicians advocate socialism, they don’t talk about North Korea, Soviet Russia, Albania, Cuba (anymore) or Venezuela (anymore). Rather, they talk about Sweden, Denmark and Norway–countries that are not, in fact, socialist. One might conclude that they just want a slightly larger welfare state–accompanied, although they never say this, by a less progressive tax system and often more business-friendly policies.

The United States “owes a profound and enduring debt of gratitude” to its historically black colleges and universities, President Donald Trump said in an address Tuesday, at which he announced new support from his administration for the institutions.

“Previously, federal law restricted more than 40 faith-based HBCUs and seminaries from fully accessing federal support for capital improvement projects,” Trump told the audience at the National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week Conference in Washington, D.C.

Sure sounds like a thorough racist to me.

Or you can just put them on the table and slam them with your fist. If you hold your hand correctly all of the sauce will go on your companions instead of yourself. This is especially handy when faced with armed assailants.

No, the KKK Hasn’t Taken Over Arkansas (and Never Trust the SPLC Anyway)

9th September 2019

The Other McCain does the reporting that American ‘journalists’ just won’t do.

Let’s start with the Klan kook: Thom Robb calls himself the “national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.” Robb lives about 10 miles from Harrison and his “Knights” receive mail at a post office box in Harrison, which gives the town a dot on the SPLC “hate map.”
This reflects a problem I’ve addressed at The American Spectator (“Another Dot on the ‘Hate Map’,” Feb. 22), where the SPLC targets entire communities as “hate” locations based on dubious claims, in order to create an exaggerated sense of menace for fund-raising purposes. By the standards of the SPLC, just about every Baptist church in America could be designated an “anti-LGBT hate group,” and if hate groups are everywhere, what’s the point of all those dots on the map?
