ZMan speculates.
Current events offers some insight into why we may never meet space aliens. The panic over the virus is something new to modern society. This virus is not a threat to humanity, but it is treated as one. We know there was no panic over the Swine flu, the Asian flu, the Hong Kong flu and so on. There was no panic over the great influenza outbreak of 2017 that killed 80,000 Americans. Yet with the death toll soaring to 4,000 with the Chinese flu, America is paralyzed with fear.
…
What we may be seeing is the early stages of a new social model, one imagined in science fiction a century ago. Once a species becomes sufficiently advanced, the population shrinks, but lives in greater comfort. Perhaps in time lifespans will extend so a small number of humans, cared for by automated cities, live long lives almost like children in a daycare center. A species of pampered toddlers is no going to risk it all to explore the stars and come visit earth.

My suspicion is that the authorities decided a long time ago to ixnay reporting by race during epidemics to avoid Stigmatizing the Marginalized. But now …
This would actually be useful information if gathered for the purpose of assessing whether the virus targets specific ethnic groups over others; there has been much speculation that Han Chinese are specially vulnerable.
That’s not it, of course; they want to know whether Fashionable Minorities are being ‘underserved’ with respect to medical treatment. Trust Democrats to take a useful idea and piss in it.

The United States is in a very real crisis. Whether or not the disease is serious enough to warrant the economic loss our actions have precipitated, the loss is real. The deaths are real. The impact on our lives is real. We are in an extraordinary time, a backdrop against which the pettiness of small men should appear anachronistic and unworthy of the moment.
Yet our nation’s press can not help itself, and a people desperate for information are subjected instead to 24/7 gotcha “journalism” in the media’s relentless, obsessive, tortured pursuit of the great orange whale.

President Donald Trump has courted endless controversies for promoting nonconventional policies and entertaining contrarian views. From the outset, he oddly seemed to have believed that having navigated the jungles of the Manhattan real estate market—crooked politicians, mercurial unions, neighborhood social activists, the green lobby, leery banks, cutthroat rivals—better prepared him for the job than did a 30-year tenure in the U.S. Senate.
…
Yet since the outbreak of the virus, Trump’s idiosyncratic sixth sense has come in handy. The country is united in its furor at China—even if it is giving no credit to Trump for being years ahead of where it is now.

ZMan sounds a warning.
We live in an age where the unthinkable, like the fog, quietly creeps up on us until suddenly the unthinkable is the new normal. Just as “shelter in place” is the new normal whenever it snows, mandatory lock downs will be the new normal whenever too many people get the sniffles. The unthinkable not only becomes thinkable, it becomes impossible to think otherwise. It also means that everything unthinkable today is suddenly on the table, maybe even the menu, for tomorrow.

One general factor that partially explains our ineffective approach to Wuflu is that too many people in key jobs affecting our response – the press, the medical research establishment, politicians, advisors – aren’t all that smart.

While Americans are stuck at home, the Democrat dominating the airwaves to counter President Donald Trump’s messaging about the coronavirus is not the one seeking to replace him in the Oval Office — it’s New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
And that’s causing some daydreaming for political junkies with time on their hands.

The homeland of all humans was a lush Garden of Eden situated to the south of the Zambezi River, in northern Botswana, a major study of DNA has concluded.
For the first time, researchers have traced back the maternal genetic lineage of anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) and found it most closely resembles people living in a small area of southern Africa.
And if you believe that one, they’ll tell you another one.
“It’s something that fascinates all humans. If we really want to understand our future we need to understand our past, who we are and where we all come from.”
Don’t tell that to a Democrat.

ZMan looks over the situation.
The current madness may give us a glimpse of how an actual collapse of civilization would unfold. We have both the threat of the super-virus, real or imaginary, and the threat to the cult of consumerism. The reality of the virus in this case is unimportant, because it is assumed to be real. The same is true of the financial markets. We may not be in an historical collapse, but it is assumed to be a real threat. In effect, this is a live action stress test of the system and the people in charge of it.
…
Of course, the lock-down itself is important. The controlling ethos of the ruling class is unfettered movement, yet in a crisis, their first instinct is to halt all movement. The people who just a few weeks ago were singing the glories of the free flow of people and goods are now threatening to weld our doors shut. When the real end times are upon us, the first clue will be a mandatory lock-down of the population with cops in the streets and a 24-hour curfew, except for approved personnel.

Joel Kotkin.
Pandemics naturally thrive in large multicultural cities, where people live “cheek by jowl” and travel to and from other countries is a fact of international tourism and commerce. Europe’s rapidly advancing infection rate is, to some extent, the product of its weak border controls, one of the EU’s greatest accomplishments. Across the continent, cities have become the primary centers of infection. Half of all COVID-19 cases in Spain, for example, have occurred in Madrid while the Milan region, with its cosmopolitan population and economy, accounts for half of all cases in Italy and almost three-fifths of the deaths.

The only differences between caveman days and the Current Year are scale and speed. The NKVD can deprive you of a lot more liberties, a lot more efficiently, than Mighty Pharaoh could. Mighty Pharaoh was a literal god on earth. He didn’t leave the fellaheen alone in their daily lives because he respected their autonomy (the very notion of personal autonomy was a few thousand years in the future when Mighty Pharaoh ruled). He didn’t monitor his subjects’ daily lives because he lacked the technology. That’s it. Put an Alexa in every mud hut along the Nile, and I promise you, Mighty Pharaoh would spend his days fucking with his slaves just on general principles.

Ace of Spades sums it up.
Good morning, kids. Wednesday and the breaking news is that evidently Cuck Schemer and Malig-Nancy Pelosi have caved and are going to support a $2 Trillion relief package crafted in the Senate late last night. I will assume some pork is in there but at least it’s not the whole Leftist hog. The Dow already posted a 2,113-point gain, the highest single day gain since 1933 and hopefully this good news (despite no one knowing where the money is going to come from; tick-tock debt clock) will also engender another positive gain on Wall Street. Surely, the President’s remarks that he wants to see the economy moving again by Easter may also give everyone a much needed boost of confidence, except of course the g-dless heathens in the Democrat-Media Complex who, like plague, thrive on misery, suffering and death itself.
If you aren’t reading Ace of Spades every day, you need to do that.

Victor Davis Hanson.
In a sophisticated society under lockdown, is it more existentially valuable to know how to fix a toilet, replace a circuit breaker, or change a tire, or to be a New York fashion designer, a Hollywood actor, or a corporate merger lawyer? At 9 p.m., when you go downtown in need of a critical prescription, are you really all that furious that a law-abiding citizen who has a gun and concealed permit is also in line—or would you be more relieved that gun control laws might ensure that his ilk never enters an all-night pharmacy?
So who is important and who not?
We were often told globalized elites on the coast were the deserved 21st-century winners, while the suckers and rubes in-between had better learn coding or head to the fracking fields.
But who now is more important than the trucker who drives 12-hours straight to deliver toilet paper to Costco? Or the mid-level manager of Target who calibrates supply and demand and is on the phone all day juggling deliveries before his store opens? Or the checker at the local supermarket who knows that the hundreds of customers inches away from her pose risks of infection, and yet she ensures that people walk out with food in their carts? The farmworker who is on the tractor all night to ensure that millions of carrots and lettuce don’t rot? The muddy frackers in West Texas who make it possible that natural gas reaches the home of the quarantined broker in Houston? The ER nurse on her fifth coronavirus of the day who matter-of-factly saves lives?

Genius Times. (Yes, this is satire. Sometimes you need a scorecard to tell.)
Analysts were shocked that a state that encourages foreigners to break the law should have so many residents break the law.
“We let homeless people take a dump on the street in front of nice restaurants. We let people spread AIDS with impunity. We encourage immigrants to come here illegally. You’d think people would listen to my orders!” Newsom said in a press conference.
Freeberg says:
Newsom is representative of a whole generation of pricks who’ve aligned every fiber of their being in the direction of “Question Authority,” and now that they’re the authority they expect not to be questioned. That’s a generalization and it shouldn’t be taken as an indicator that every single one has this problem. But the ones that do have it aren’t completely sane, and yet they’re still in charge of things.
