Were Today’s RINOs Ever Republicans?

9th June 2020

Read it.

It is one of those stories mainstream media cannot resist. Someone who previously claimed to be a Republican, has not voted Republican since 2004 and/or worked for losing campaigns years ago voices their support for Joe Biden and the media pounces. Welcome to the D.C. swamp! For these so-called conservatives, policy no longer matters as they abandon every belief they previously claimed to hold dear just so they can either get paid as a consultant, get booked by liberal media outlets or keep their standing in the DC social scene.

“Gasoline Is Awfully Cheap”: Police Action Against ‘Ace Burns’ Raises Free-Speech Concerns

8th June 2020

Jonathan Turley.

We have often discussed how advocating for free speech often places us in troubling company. Those who are targeted for arrest are often the loudest and most obnoxious among us. Ace Burns is one of those people. Burns, 34, whose real name is Israel Burns,, is the self-proclaimed leader of the “FTP movement (which he defined in various ways including “Fire To Property”).

13.3% unemployment rate

8th June 2020

Tyler Cowen, a Real Economist at GMU.

That one surprised me, as indeed it did most other economists. What should I learn from this episode? After all, labor market adjustment was relatively slow coming out of the 2008 crisis.

My tentative hypothesis is that “matching” is more important than I had thought (and I already thought it was quite important, relative to other macro commentators). One feature of the current layoffs and rehirings is that the ties between workers and firms apparently were not so severed in the first place. For most sectors (cruise ships aside, etc.), no “rematches” were required, and so rehirings were accomplished very quickly. As demand (partially) returned, employers wanted at least some of the old workers back, and workers wanted their old employers back, and then it happened. “Figuring out where I belong” did not slow down the process very much.

“I’m a Developer. I Won’t Teach My Kids to Code, and Neither Should You.”

7th June 2020

Read it.

It’s easy to see why parents push coding on their children. What better way to prepare our kids for a future ruled by software than by training them how to build it? If everything is going to be automated, it’s much safer to be the one doing the automating. And if learning to code is good, then learning earlier is better. But while these products may teach kids specific coding languages, they actually have very little to do with the work of creating software.

Coding is not the new literacy. While most parents are literate and know to read to their kids, most are not programmers and have no idea what kind of skills a programmer needs. Coding books for kids present coding as a set of problems with “correct” solutions. And if your children can just master the syntax, they’ll be able to make things quickly and easily. But that is not the way programming works. Programming is messy. Programming is a mix of creativity and determination. Being a developer is about more than syntax, and certain skills can only be taught to the very young.

Work Doesn’t Happen at the Computer

7th June 2020

Read it.

One of the many changes is the assumption about where and how work gets done. It used to be that work got done with your hands. And if something needed doing, you rolled up your sleeves and got to work.

Now the assumption is that the only place work gets done is at a computer. And if you’re NOT at your computer, work is most definitely not getting done.

The computer is a powerful machine, and it’s remarkable to think that the smartphone in your hands is more powerful than the computer that put humans on the moon.

But even with all the advances in technology, computers are still just tools.

Gentle Giant Week

5th June 2020

ZMan does his weekly podcast.

In a week of left-wing riots, it seemed logical to do a show on the left-wing riots, so that’s what we have this week. There is so much material here that I could probably do ten hours and not cover everything. What we are seeing is the orchestrated suicide of the country by the ruling class. This is a not a revolution from above, so much a suicide from above. The new world these people imagine is less plausible than what libertarians imagine or even what anarchist imagine.

The thing is, this system cannot survive a month without the cops. Take the cops off the streets and the mob consumes the beautiful people neighborhoods. The usual suspect will be swallowing their jewelry and racing to the borders. All of the petty tyrants that have been pushing us around for the last two months over the ridiculous virus panic will be swinging from lamp posts. Not only will the mob lay waste to the people in charge, the normal people quietly seething will be suddenly unconstrained.

If you don’t subscribe, you really ought to.

This Is Why We Need Guns

5th June 2020

Charlie Cooke lays it out.

Defending their lives and their property as they see fit is exactly what those who have been abandoned by the authorities are doing in droves.

‘Only the cops need guns” simply could not live forever alongside, “The cops are racist and will kill you.” And so, at long last, the two circles of the Venn Diagram have filed for an amicable divorce. In the end, the differences proved irreconcilable.

The Bonfire of the Insanities

3rd June 2020

Steve Sailer.

White elites are currently fantasizing that they can use the People of Color mob of young looters to overthrow Trump, somewhat like in Georgia in 2003 and Ukraine in 2014.

Serious people in Washington and New York take seriously warnings from abroad that the American Empire can endure four years of Trump, but not eight. Granted, the traditional, Constitutional way of bringing about regime change is to wait for the November election.

Interracial Violence in America, by the Numbers

2nd June 2020

Read it.

Blacks commit around 70 percent of black-white interracial homicides. I take it that, as a statistical matter, the “expected” number is 50 percent for all forms of black-white interracial violent crime.

Is the vastly disproportionate number of violent crimes by blacks against whites explained by black racism? Not necessarily. It might be the product of the disproportionate propensity of blacks to commit violent crimes against anyone. But the explanation must be racism, criminality, or both.

Police Union Privileges Revisited

2nd June 2020

Alex Tabarrok, a Real Economist.

The post below, Police Union Privileges, from 2018 is worth revisiting. As I wrote in a follow-up, police union privileges are only one part of a system and reform requires system-thinking. Nevertheless, getting rid of these special privileges, including so-called qualified immunity and restoring the equal rule of law are good places to start. Need I also mention that police should not keep fines and forfeitures–the negative consequences of which I documented in To Serve and Collect, my paper with Makowsky and Stratmann.

Anger Management

1st June 2020

ZMan has some suggestions.

Watching the events of the last few days, it is impossible for a sensible white person to not get angry. Blacks and now Antifa are running wild in the streets, looting and now killing people. Meanwhile, the cops stand around doing nothing, while the politicians stumble all over themselves trying to excuse what’s happening. Worse yet, they are now blaming white supremacists. It is, as the great man once said, enough to cause a normal man to hoist the black flag and start slitting throats.

The people responsible for this, of course, want you angry. Angry people lose focus and pin their anger on convenient targets. Angry people say and do things that make them easy to dismiss. No matter how much they think they are “owning the libs” right now, those angry BoomerCons on Facebook posting boogaloo rants are just playing a role laid out for them by the usual suspects. Their anger is confirmation to those leftists who define themselves in opposition to normal white people.

Instead, now is a good time to think about excluding from your life those anti-whites who you would like to punch in the face right now. Just as blacks need to be around whites, those anti-whites trying to explain why this nonsense is justified need to be around you and people like you. They need to see you unhappy in order to feel the closest thing to happy their dead souls can experience. If you really want to “own the libs” in your life right now, calmly and clearly disassociate yourself from them.
