In her Minneapolis Star Tribune op-ed on the FBI’s just released 2017 Hate Crimes Report, Minnesota Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar presents herself as a sort of apostle of love. Omar decries the increase in reported hate crimes. However, she immediately attributes this increase to President Trump. As Omar puts it in her first paragraph: “The culture of intolerance spread by President Donald Trump has clearly emboldened racist individuals to acts of violence.” Something tells me that Omar’s message of love is a thinly disguised invitation to hate — to hate President Trump and his supporters, anyway

It’s hard not to see the connection between this increase in wildfires and the land management policy changes that have occurred since the 1970s.
Laws like the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act, according to Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., “have resulted in endlessly time-consuming and cost-prohibitive restrictions and requirements that have made the scientific management of our forests virtually impossible.”
These laws, and others like them, have drastically reduced the amount of forest thinning and controlled burns that used to effectively keep wildland from becoming a danger to people and property.

The sun hadn’t yet risen over Gurtar Sandhu’s 7-Eleven store near downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 10 when four plainclothes U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents swarmed inside. The place was busy; a lot of Sandhu’s customers are day laborers and other working people who start early. As dozens of customers poured themselves coffee and lined up to pay for morning snacks, the agents flashed badges and told employees to stay put. Three other agents, wearing dark ICE jackets, guarded the entrance, blocking anyone from coming in. The tension was heightened when one cashier darted out the back door into the dawn.
Government employees can make your life hell if they choose to do so, whether you’ve doing anything illegal or not, simply by the burdens they can unilaterally impose on you in the name of the regulatory state.

The Obama administration didn’t like firearms merchants, payday loan services, and some other businesses. Operation Choke Point was the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s plan to shut them down by choking off their access to the banking system. Regulators repeatedly threatened bankers with tighter scrutiny if they did business with these so-called “high risk” accounts—absurdly comparing payday lenders to porn shops and Ponzi schemes.
“I don’t like this product and I don’t believe it has anyplace in our financial system,” said a senior Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation regulator to a banker, whose sin was to consider a lawful business relationship with a payday lender. “Your decision to move forward will result in an immediate unplanned audit of your entire bank.”
In other words: Do something legal that we don’t like, and I’ll inflict extraordinary and excessive harassment.

There is no state law against this at present, and I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a one-party state to write one that forbids soliciting campaign cash from state vendors. Chicago politicians may consider themselves experts at extorting cash for pay to play, but Oregon politicians are at the very least their equals. Perhaps extortion might be too harsh a description. Taxpayers are paying for these state vendor contracts, so money laundering might be a kinder description.
Willie Brown was the master of this in California, but every Democrat politician probably has this as a basic skill.

Filed on Wednesday, the lawsuit names Steyer and Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona as defendants. Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona — which has benefited from millions of dollars in donations from Steyer — is campaigning to require Arizona electric utility companies derive half their power from renewable energy sources by 2030. The ballot proposal is officially known as Proposition 127.
Brnovich’s lawsuit is in response to Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona’s campaign against him. The renewable energy group has aired attack ads against him, claiming he “bailed out” the state’s largest electric utility company by wording the Proposition 127 ballot language in a way, it argues, puts the proposal in a bad light.

The Pittsburgh school board and city council members are pressuring a marathon organizer to boot sponsorship from Chick-fil-A for the organization’s alleged “hateful beliefs.”
Apparently the fact that the guy who runs Chick-Fil-A doesn’t embrace homosexuals means that the entire organization has ‘hateful beliefs’. Seems to me that the only people with ‘hateful beliefs’ are these politicians.
The leadership of Chick-Fil-A has openly and passionately promulgated hateful beliefs against the LGBTQIA+ community,” a Wednesday letter signed by nine council members read, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday.
I must have missed that. Certainly doesn’t show up in their advertising. Maybe they’re doing that in Uzbekistan.
“Additionally, the company has financed organizations staunchly opposed to same-sex marriage and non-discrimination laws and other groups that equate ‘homosexual behavior and lifestyle’ with lawfulness and in opposition to the ‘foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society.”
Which they are. I guess truth is a ‘hateful belief’ these days.
“This is really about the children and about sending the message to the children of Pittsburgh, and really to everyone, that Pittsburgh, as far as city council is concerned, is welcoming and inclusive for everyone,” council member Erika Strasburg said, according to the Post-Gazette.

In a combative exchange at a hearing Friday in Washington, D.C., a federal judge unabashedly accused career State Department officials of lying and signing “clearly false” affidavits to derail a series of lawsuits seeking information about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private email server and her handling of the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth said he was “shocked” and “dumbfounded” when he learned that FBI had granted immunity to former Clinton chief of staff Cheryl Mills during its investigation into the use of Clinton’s server, according to a court transcript of his remarks.
“I had myself found that Cheryl Mills had committed perjury and lied under oath in a published opinion I had issued in a Judicial Watch case where I found her unworthy of belief, and I was quite shocked to find out she had been given immunity in — by the Justice Department in the Hillary Clinton email case,” Lamberth said during Friday’s hearing.
