Bradley Replacement: Army Risks Third Failure In A Row

7th October 2019

Read it.

The underlying anxiety here is that the Army has tried and failed repeatedly to modernize its Reagan-era arsenal over the past 30 years — the problem Army Futures Command was created to fix. Armored fighting vehicle programs, above all replacements for the Bradley troop carrier, have been particularly fraught. The Future Combat Systems family of vehicles, which included a lightweight Bradley replacement, was canceled in 2009, while the Ground Combat Vehicle, a better-armored and correspondingly heavier Bradley replacement, was cancelled in 2014. The Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle is the Army’s third swing at this ball.

Maybe the Russians have something we could buy. They don’t seem to be having these problems.

U.S. Navy’s New Block V Virginia-Class Submarine: Best Stealth Sub Eve

7th October 2019

Read it.

Over the years, senior Navy weapons developers have explained some of the key areas of modernization focus; these include new coating materials to make the submarines stealthier, new antennas for longer-range, more accurate undersea surveillance missions and new “quieting” engine propulsion technology, among other things.

All of these technologies, in fact, already exist in the USS South Dakota attack submarine — the most advanced submarine ever to be delivered to the Navy. The new boat, which is now operational, began as a prototype, test-bed platform to evolve these new technologies. What all of these USS South Dakota innovations also amount to is that, Hanson said, they are informing both Block V as well as current conceptual discussions now underway regarding a future generation Virginia-class submarine now only in early conceptual development – called Block VI. Block VI, according to Hanson, is not likely to begin to materialize until the mid 2020s.

Police Chief Suspends Charity Event Because Republicans Would Have Been There

The “Blue Bowl” is a fundraiser for the family of Sgt. Ron Helus, an officer killed in a 2018 mass shooting. But Thousand Oaks Police Chief Tim Hagel decided it wasn’t a go after learning that Republicans had been invited, Los Angeles Fox News affiliate FOX 11 reported Tuesday.

California is turning into a classic one-party totalitarian state. The sooner we get them to secede, the better.

Affirmative Action Forever, Harvard Edition

2nd October 2019

Scott Johnson at Power Line does a deep dive.

Federal district court judge Allison Burroughs has upheld Harvard’s racially discriminatory admissions policy in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (embedded below). Long story short: Harvard’s discrimination is all in a good cause. Asian-Americans are only incidental victims and they aren’t treated any more poorly in the process than white students. Harvard doesn’t mean anything invidious by it.

The principle of equal treatment was adopted as the law of the land in the great civil rights legislation of 1964 and 1965, or so we foolishly thought at the time. It may even have been the law for a minute or two. Then the federal government began building the whole edifice of affirmative action and racial preferences that we live with today and that has been addressed by the Supreme Court in a number of important cases. Certainly insofar as higher education is concerned, the affirmative action regime and the treatment of students based on the color of their skin are entrenched more deeply than ever under the shibboleth of “diversity.”

Former CIA Official on Whistleblower: ‘How Could This Be an Intelligence Matter?’

28th September 2019

Read it.

I am very familiar with transcripts of presidential phone calls since I edited and processed dozens of them when I worked for the NSC. I also know a lot about intelligence whistleblowers from my time with the CIA.

My suspicions grew this morning when I saw the declassified whistleblowing complaint. It appears to be written by a law professor and includes legal references and detailed footnotes. It also has an unusual legalistic reference on how this complaint should be classified.

From my experience, such an extremely polished whistleblowing complaint is unheard of. This document looks as if this leaker had outside help, possibly from congressional members or staff.

For the last several years, we have been covering the grade-changing scandal in Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS). Administrators, teachers, and parents continue to come forward about the widespread fraud that allows children to graduate, even though they’ve missed school or failed classes.

The problem is not just that they aren’t learning anything, but that they’re getting the same credential as those who have, a credential that is used for employment and further education decisions.

“We Are Going Up in Flames”: New Jersey in “Worse Shape Than Any Other State” Senate President Admits

28th August 2019

Read it.

For years, it was conventional wisdom that the most financial challenged state in the US – whether it comes to overall debt burden, outlays, tax collections, underfunded pension and retirement obligations, or simply credit rating – was Illinois, followed closely by New Jersey.

However, at least according to New Jersey’s Senate president, conventional wisdom is wrong.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Senator Stephen Sweeney, a Democrat, said that that credit-rating companies may be underestimating the severity of the state’s financial strains by giving it the second-lowest grade after Illinois.

Electoral College Members Can Defy Voters’ Wishes, Court Rules

22nd August 2019

Read it.

In a ruling that kicks at the foundation of how America chooses presidents, a federal appeals court on Tuesday said members of the Electoral College, who cast the actual votes for president, may choose whomever they please regardless of a state’s popular vote.

The ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Denver said Colorado was out of bounds in 2016 when it canceled the vote of a so-called faithless elector named Michael Baca. Mr. Baca, a Democrat, wrote in the name of John Kasich, a Republican who was Ohio’s governor at the time, even though Hillary Clinton carried Colorado, earning its nine electoral votes. The secretary of state replaced Mr. Baca with another elector who then voted for Mrs. Clinton.

“The text of the Constitution makes clear that states do not have the constitutional authority to interfere with presidential electors who exercise their constitutional right to vote for the president and vice president candidates of their choice,” the court majority wrote in a split ruling by a three-judge panel.

Oh: Intelligence Community Inspector General Tells Congress That All of Hillary Clinton’s Emails Were Sent to a “Live Dropbox” Account Maintained by a Chinese Front Company

15th August 2019

Read it.

You may remember that the original report on Hillary’s emails said something like “they were almost certainly captured by a hostile foreign nation or hostile foreign nations,” but then Comey and Strzok worked that language out to say the emails “may” have been accessed by another country.

And now: Oh no big deal, her system seems to have had a virus implanted into it that sent each and every email, including the top secret classified ones, to a drop box controlled by a Chinese company.

The system had been infected so that every email was sent to this address of a Chinese company, no matter who you actually intended to send it to, or not send it to.

And she did all of this because she didn’t want to turn over any records to anyone — no watchdogs with legitimate FOIA requests, no disclosure in response to a subpoena.

She decided she didn’t want any Americans to have her emails.

But a Chinese front company? Sure, let’s roll the dice on that one.

No intent. No intent no intent no intent no intent.

The Justice Department Is Gearing Up For A Big Fight With Immigration Judges’ Union

9th August 2019

Read it.

I’ll bet you didn’t know that there was such a thing has an Immigration Judges Union.

The Trump administration asked a federal panel to revoke the exclusive right of a public sector union to represent immigration judges in collective bargaining Friday.

The union, the National Association of Immigration Judges (NAIJ), has been at odds with the administration over substantive policy directives and the independence of the immigration courts.

I’m not comfortable with the idea of judges in a union, especially one with some sort of exclusive right.

Unions are for people with no market power because what they do can be done by any literate numerate person. I don’t see judges being in that demographic.

Federal law defines management officials as “any individual employed by an agency in a position the duties and responsibilities of which require or authorize the individual to formulate, determine, or influence the policies of the agency.” The Department of Justice told the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) that immigration judges qualify as management officials and therefore cannot be members of a bargaining unit.

Seems pretty cut and dried to me.

The NAIJ has publicly objected to the government’s efforts to speed deportations and otherwise streamline the immigration system.

Now that sounds like a union.
