As expected, the Justice Department, now under the control of Joe Biden, has voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against Yale for discriminating against Whites and Asian Americans on the basis of their race. I wrote about that suit here and here.
The Justice Department’s complaint demonstrates the magnitude of Yale’s race-based disfavoring of Whites and Asians. According to the complaint, which is based on the DOJ’s lengthy investigation of Yale’s undergraduate admissions process, Blacks in the tenth decile (the top one) are admitted to Yale at a rate of 60 percent. By contrast, Whites are admitted at a rate of 20 percent and Asians at a rate of only 14 percent.
Because Yale is a highly selective college, few applicants of any race or ethnicity are admitted from the third decile or below. However, in the fourth decile, Blacks are admitted at a rate of 12 percent — about the same rate at which Asians in the tenth decile (the top one) are admitted. The admission rates for Whites and Asians in the fourth decile are just 2 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively.
In the fifth decile, Blacks are admitted at a rate of 21 percent — about the same rate as Whites in the tenth decile. For Whites and Asians in the fifth decile, the admission rates are just 4 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively.
In other words, Blacks with slightly below average credentials in relation to other applicants stand about the same chance of being admitted to Yale as Whites and Asians whose credentials place them in the top 10 percent of the applicant pool.

Xerox’s new printer is 9 feet wide, 7 feet tall, and reaches an internal temperature of more than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s not an inkjet, of course—it’s a 3D printer that can produce bespoke metal components. The Naval Postgraduate School, an grad institution for Naval officers and others, is the first place to put one of these massive Xerox machines into service.
Let’s hope it works better than my printer.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin fired hundreds of members of Pentagon policy advisory boards Tuesday, resorting to a blunt method of removing last-minute Trump administration appointees, The Wall Street Journal reported.
How very retro. Welcome to the 19th century.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has a press release announcing that she will join the Senate Finance Committee. From the release: “She also announced plans to introduce legislation implementing a wealth tax on fortunes over $50 million. The Finance Committee’s jurisdiction covers taxation and revenue policy, including oversight of the Internal Revenue Service. The senator’s legislation reflects her 2020 campaign proposal to impose a two cent tax on every dollar of individual wealth over $50 million, with an additional surtax on every dollar of wealth over $1 billion.”

Why would Biden select someone this incompetent for such an important job? Because LeVine and her husband donate generously to Democrats. The LeVines gave more than $400,000 to the Biden campaign and other Democratic causes in 2019 and 2020, according to federal campaign records. In 2017, they were appointed as deputy national finance chairs for the Democratic National Committee.

Ten Senate Republicans released a $618 billion counterproposal to President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package hours before they met on Monday evening in hopes of finding some common ground, but the two proposals have far more differences than similarities.
The $618 billion package only slightly resembles Biden’s, whose proposal is three times as large and includes bigger stimulus checks for a greater number of people. Despite the differences, the senators expressed willingness to work with Biden, who campaigned on unity and his ability to reach across the aisle.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appeared for a 10-minute interview with CBS Minnesota’s Esme Murphy over the weekend. Here if you can withstand it and if you can keep up one can observe Walz’s blizzard of verbiage and question-begging along with the media support that enables it.
If you are not subject to the Walz regime of one-man rule, you may be able to watch this video with the kind of detachment that allows for amusement. If you have followed Walz’s press conferences over the past year, however, you may find it sickening. Joe Isuzu has absolutely nothing on this guy and he was a work of advertising art.

Last week, an official from Washington State was nominated by the Biden administration to be “Interim Assistant Secretary of the Employment and Training Administration”, a post in the Labor Department. And just what the hell is that? “Interim” “Assistant”? Someone must have searched long and hard for a suitable slot for the former Head of the Washington Employment Security Department, which handles unemployment claims.
Here in Washington State, Suzi LeVine presided over the loss to the State of $600 Million in Unemployment Fraud, during the Covid-unemployment deluge last year. The Department even today has a 40,000-claim backlog in processing 2020 claims. I wonder how much taxpayer money she will now lose for the rest of the country in her new job?

For those of you who don’t know, law enforcement can issue various secret warrants that have some kind of gag order attached. You cannot tell anyone for any reason. You cannot even acknowledge that it exists. The workaround is to set up a warrant canary. This is some kind of flag that says “I have not received” a National Security Letter or something with a gag order. Since they cannot force you to lie, you can always remove the canary when you have received one of these legal notices. The absence of the canary informs people that something changed.
If you find this disturbing, welcome to the club.

A New York bill aimed at confiscating body armor would also force parents to hand over safety products designed for school shootings.
Democrat assemblymember Jonathan G. Jacobson wants to make New York the first state to outlaw bulletproof vests, but his far-reaching legislation would also end up seizing protective backpacks from students and parents. Two bulletproof backpack makers and one local retailer said the bill damages an industry created to protect children from school shootings.
Democrat politicians keep stepping on their base.

Impeachment fever has struck Kentucky, where grievances over coronavirus restrictions and the outcome of the Breonna Taylor death investigation have spurred petitions to oust both the governor and the attorney general.
It’s a card rarely played in any serious way in the Bluegrass State, though Kentucky has had its share of provocative elected officials. In the two new cases, the effort to impeach was triggered by disagreements over policy or executive decisions at the highest levels of Kentucky government.

As commenter Reg Caesar points out, “amnesty” is the wrong word, not because it’s too strong but because it’s too weak. An amnesty means you won’t get punished for breaking the law but you still have to obey the law. What Biden is proposing is that not only won’t lawbreakers not be punished, they get to keep on breaking the law, and they get rewarded with citizenship.

The sinister role that teachers’ unions play in our society has come clearly into focus, as our children’s lives have been devastated by needless school closures across the country. These closures–still in effect in most places, despite all scientific evidence that they are both unnecessary and harmful–largely reflect the power of the teachers’ unions. They evidently want to get paid, without ever entering a classroom again.

National School Choice Week has taken on renewed importance this year, as too many families are approaching the one-year mark of crisis online learning provided by their public school district.
Last March, the coronavirus pandemic shuttered schools nationwide, forcing teachers, parents, and students to transition to virtual classrooms and grapple with the various effects of lockdowns. Ten months later, parents report that 53% of K-12 students are still learning in their virtual classrooms.
Public schools have remained largely closed to in-person instruction.

The Seattle City Council is about to pass “hazard pay” legislation, mandating an additional $4-per-hour for grocery store workers, lasting “for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.” The main sponsor of said legislation is, of course, the grocery-store workers union.
Prediction 1: Grocery store workers will lose hours, and/or lose their jobs entirely if their employers are forced to pay them an additional $4-per-hour on top of their already-inflated Seattle-mandated wages.
Prediction 2: Small grocery stores will leave Seattle for the suburbs, given that grocery stores already operate on razor-thin margins.
Prediction 3: The “Covid-19 Pandemic” will never end.

Charlie Cooke.
Last month, I got a notice in the mail from a debt collector. It was a personal property tax bill for my wife’s car — from a different state, Connecticut, which we had left three years earlier.
In Connecticut, they charge you for the privilege of owning a car, and I apparently owed taxes from 2017 — which, 814 days after they were levied, I was finding out about for the first time.
I don’t like taxes, but I always pay them. Had I known about this one, I’d have paid it, too. (The total fee was $250 — $150 for the tax, $70 for interest, and $30 in debt collection fees.) But I didn’t know about it, because, for three years, I was never told. Despite having my mail forwarded for a year and having family members who still live in the house we left, I didn’t receive a single letter or notice. Now, I had a debt collector’s letter in my hand.

Here’s a look at Biden’s proposed 401(k) changes:
The 401(k) tax deduction would disappear.
Workers would instead get a tax credit for 401(k) contributions.
The tax advantage of contributing to a 401(k) would be reduced for higher earners and increase for low and middle earners.
The creation of an automatic 401(k) for workers without access to a workplace retirement account.
Allowing caregivers to make catch-up contributions to retirement accounts.
The devil is, of course, in the details.
The problem with most such ‘soak-the-rich’ plans is that ‘the rich’ wind up being anybody who makes more than, say, a waitress or a cab driver — i.e. it winds up being a ‘soak-the-middle-class’ scheme (although that’s not on your copy) — the reason being that in order to get all of the money the Democrats are wanting to spend on their pet schemes the amount they can bleed from the Real Rich is totally inadequate.
