Nineteen police officers in Albuquerque, New Mexico, quit the police department’s specialized protest team after an officer was put on leave following a protest.
“They don’t feel supported here, and they don’t feel trust. They feel second-guessed, and they don’t feel that they can do their job, no matter how perfect they do their job, without getting in trouble,” Shaun Willoughby, the president of the Albuquerque Police Officers’ Association, told KOB4.

BLUF: Government regulation.
Excessive concern about low levels of radiation led to a regulatory standard known as ALARA: As Low As Reasonably Achievable. What defines “reasonable”? It is an ever-tightening standard. As long as the costs of nuclear plant construction and operation are in the ballpark of other modes of power, then they are reasonable.
This might seem like a sensible approach, until you realize that it eliminates, by definition, any chance for nuclear power to be cheaper than its competition. Nuclear can‘t even innovate its way out of this predicament: under ALARA, any technology, any operational improvement, anything that reduces costs, simply gives the regulator more room and more excuse to push for more stringent safety requirements, until the cost once again rises to make nuclear just a bit more expensive than everything else. Actually, it‘s worse than that: it essentially says that if nuclear becomes cheap, then the regulators have not done their job.

I haven’t seen much humor in life during the past year or so, but one thing that has been uproariously hilarious lately is the orchestrated media narrative that President Joe Biden is bipartisan and conciliatory. Please give me a moment to catch my breath.
I think it was Karl Rove who recently observed that the media’s effective definition of bipartisan legislation is not that significant numbers of both parties’ lawmakers support a bill but that some poll somewhere shows that a large percentage of Americans of each party support some vaguely described initiative, even if zero Republican legislators support the actual bill. You can frame a poll question to get the result you want.

The US federal government may very well be the most complex human undertaking in existence, an immortal leviathan with millions of moving parts and thousands of distinct job titles.
Or that’s what it was, anyway. Now, America’s federal workers and appointees, from the lowliest to the mightiest, appear to have but one shared job: fighting racism, sexism, and the other evil -isms, and condemning the country that overpays them. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are now the Joint Chiefs of Women’s Empowerment. The HUD Secretary is Secretary of Reminding You That Redlining Happened 60 Years Ago.
And then we have President Biden’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield. On Wednesday, Thomas-Greenfield spoke to the National Action Network, Al Sharpton’s organization for transmuting activist energy into money. In her address, Thomas-Greenfield indicated that she would much rather be ambassador to your local middle school’s anti-racism presentation in the auditorium.

… there is now a full-blown labor shortage in the US, for one simple reason – trillions in Biden stimulus are now incentivizing potential workers not to seek gainful employment, but to sit back and collect the next stimmy check for doing absolutely nothing in what is becoming the world’s greatest “under the radar” experiment in Universal Basic Income.
If the government is going to give you ‘free’ money, why work?

When Congress agreed to finance the Interstate Highway System in 1956 by dedicating taxes on gasoline, tires, autos, and trucks to a Highway Trust Fund, it also adopted a policy of not spending more from the fund that was actually collected in highway fees into that fund. This delayed completion of the interstate highways because inflation increased costs without increasing gas taxes and other revenues, but it ensured that the fund remained solvent.
…
That is no longer the case, and today Congress spends about $14 billion more per year out of the fund than it collects in highway user fees. Yesterday, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing on the “long-term solvency of the highway trust fund.” Most of the witnesses at the hearing spoke about problems with gasoline taxes and why they should be replaced with mileage-based user fees.
That’s all well and good, but everyone seems to have lost sight of why the trust fund is insolvent. It isn’t, as asserted by one of the speakers (whose testimony was otherwise fine), because of “revenue shortfalls.” Instead, it was because of Congressional overspending.

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Kristen Clarke, Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Clarke appeared along with Todd Kim, the nominee to head the Environment and Natural Resources Division. This meant a pretty easy time for Kim.
Clarke, by contrast, came under heavy fire. She tried to deflect it through a combination of lies and nonsense.
Consider her exchange with Sen. Ted Cruz. In June 2020, Clarke wrote an article for Newsweek called “I Prosecuted Police Killings. Defund the Police — But Be Strategic.” So Cruz asked Clarke whether she still favors defunding the police.
Clarke responded that she doesn’t support defunding the police, and that she wrote the Newsweek article to make it clear that she does not support defunding the police (she later made clear that she equates “defunding” the police with investing fewer resources in the police). Clarke blamed the title of the article, which called expressly for defunding the police, on Newsweek.

The “revolving door” has been around for hundreds of years.
I’m not talking about the literal one used to enter a fancy hotel – that came later – but rather, the migration of workers from the private sector to public sector and back, for the purpose of using government-made connections to serve personal financial interests. This migration traditionally happens en masse during presidential transitions, as public servants from each party trade places.

A California city erected a chain-link fence on Saturday around a local restaurant that refuses to obey COVID-19 restrictions, according to reports.
Tinhorn Flats Saloon & Grill in Burbank was barricaded off from the public to prevent the owners from operating after a court ordered the electricity to be shut off, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff issued a preliminary injunction Friday which allowed the city to prevent the restaurant from opening without a county health permit and a city conditional use permit, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“Government must be a powerful force for good in the lives of Americans,” White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deese announced on March 29. This is the core principle of President Joe Biden’s promise to “change the paradigm” with his $3 trillion stimulus package which seeks to pour vast amounts of tax dollars into dozens of government programs that have dismally failed in the past. But thanks to Biden’s election, the federal government has suddenly become far more competent than ever before.
To have confidence in the American Jobs Plan, it is not enough to believe that additional spending is needed for repairing bridges, paving roads, or boosting child care. Instead, one must believe that the damning revelations from all the inspectors general and Government Accountability Office reports in recent decades are null and void. A vast increase in outlays will achieve miraculous results because there is no resemblance between federal agencies commanded by Biden appointees and the same agencies in the past half century. The notion that “government must be a powerful force for good” is premised on the notion that Biden himself is such an inexorable “force for good” that history no longer applies inside the Beltway.

President Joe Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to oversee the administration’s response to the crisis at the border 15 days ago, but she has not yet made a visit.
Harris was appointed March 24, and as of April 7 had not announced any plans to visit the southern border. When a reporter mentioned that Harris hadn’t visited the border and asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki if Harris was still working on addressing the crisis, Psaki said that the vice president had stopped for a snack “like many Americans.”

The Georgia lawmaker who was arrested after knocking on the door of the governor’s office as he made televised comments in support of the sweeping, controversial new election law he’d just signed will not be charged, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Rep. Park Cannon, an Atlanta Democrat, was arrested March 25 and charged with obstruction of law enforcement and disruption of the General Assembly. She was released from jail later that evening.
“While some of Representative Cannon’s colleagues and the police officers involved may have found her behavior annoying, such sentiment does not justify a presentment to a grand jury of the allegations in the arrest warrants or any other felony charges,” Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said in an emailed statement.
And so she’ll keep doing it , and doing it, and doing it, until she actually gets charged with something.
This is why we see so many violent protests — the protesters, even when they are arrested, are held for a while and then sent on their way. So they internalize the belief that breaking the law for political purposes is free. And they’ll continue to do it.

A proposed maglev line between Washington and Baltimore will disrupt 1,000 acres of “parks, recreational facilities and wetlands,” according to a recently released draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the project. That’s a lot of land considering that all but nine miles of the project would be underground. While 180 acres are for a maintenance facility, the remaining acres represent a right-of-way that is an average of 750 feet wide.
This potential disruption has raised the ire of the local chapter of the Audubon Society, which is opposing the plan. As the Antiplanner recently noted, such land disruptions will be an issue for all high-speed rail lines, and in that analysis I was clearly being conservative in assuming a mere 80-foot right-of-way. By contrast, airlines don’t need any right-of-way once they leave the airports.
