Glenn Greenwald.
A lengthy CNN article — dressed up as an investigative exposé that was little more than stenography of FBI messaging disseminated from behind a shield of anonymity — purported in the headline to take the reader “Inside the plot to kidnap Gov. Whitmer.” It claimed that it all began when angry discussions about COVID restrictions “spiraled into a terrorism plot, officials say, with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer the target of a kidnapping scheme.” CNN heralded the FBI’s use of informants and agents to break up the plot but depicted them as nothing more than passive bystanders reporting what the domestic terrorists were plotting.
…
The article never once hinted at let alone described the highly active role of these informants and agents themselves in encouraging and designing the plot.

CNN became apoplectic whenever Donald Trump called them “fake news,” but on July 21, they offered President Biden a nationally televised boost that can accurately be described as a “fake town hall.”
A real town hall would sell tickets in a city like Cincinnati and let the locals mix it up with the president, ask them whatever was on their mind. That’s not what CNN does. It’s an “invitation only” audience, which means nobody boos or laughs at inappropriate times. CNN was talking over the video, but when Biden waved goodbye at the limited crowd, they gave him a standing ovation.
The questioners were typically tilted: eight Democrats and three Republicans, plus a mother who lost a son to opioids. Questions are clearly pre-scripted. The network knows exactly what’s going to be asked on what topic. CNN.com had a preview article telling viewers the night’s topics in advance. Airing it live doesn’t mean it’s lively.

GOP legislators in Michigan have abolished the law that allowed Democrat governor Gretchen Whitmer to continuously lock down the state since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
TheBlaze reports that the state House, which is led by the GOP, voted 60-48 Wednesday to repeal the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, which granted Whitmer the authority she used in locking down Michigan indefinitely. The law gave extensive authority to governors in issuing emergency declarations and setting rules to “protect life and property or to bring the emergency situation within the affected area under control.”
The state Senate, also held by the GOP, voted 20-15 to repeal the law last week.
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional last October.
Since the repeal proposal had been the result of a citizen-initiated campaign, Whitmer is powerless to veto it.

For now, let’s use this stop to grab some popcorn and figure out how we got into this mess in the first place. We’re going to have to go back a bit to the post-war era. U.S. government spending fell from $93 billion in 1945 to under $35 billion by 1947. And by 1947, the U.S. was running a budget surplus of close to 2% of GDP to pay off the debt. Great money management.
But since that time, debt has been steadily rising and it really started piling up in the mid-2000s. So how does the government decide how much debt is too much? By agreeing on something called the debt ceiling—but Congress just keeps voting to raise or even totally suspend the debt ceiling. That would be like calling your bank and just upping your line of credit every time you’re close to maxing out a credit card.
Of course, the responsible thing to do would be to pay off your debt, not just hike the limit. Yet that’s exactly what Washington does when faced with a debt problem.

A member of the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors has sued over Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin suspending the board, claiming it prevented vital oversight, including over the potential introduction of critical race theory in the university curriculum.
The board is one of 42 Defense Department advisory committees that Mr. Austin suspended to consider their “continued utilization,” according to a Pentagon memorandum.
The Air Force Academy board or AFA BOV remains shut down despite passing Mr. Austin’s April 30 deadline to complete the review.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently issued a “first in the nation” executive order on gun violence, declaring it a “disaster emergency” in his state and vesting himself with the authority to treat it as a “public health crisis” just like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cuomo, a Democrat, also signed into law a bill to hold gun manufacturers and sellers liable for otherwise lawful conduct that nonetheless is deemed to create a “public nuisance.”
The new law effectively opens up the floodgates to frivolous lawsuits designed to kneecap a lawful industry and, with it, lawful gun ownership around the state of New York.

Scott Johnson at PowerLine turns over a rock.
Over the weekend FOX 9’s Tom Lyden reported the sordid details of DFL state representative John Thompson’s domestic assault charges going back a decade and more. Following the publication of Lyden’s story, the DFL establishment turned on Thompson. Every member of the DFL establishment called in unison for Thompson’s resignation.
Since he first appeared on the public scene in the summer of 2020, Thompson has manifested as an obvious racial hustler, thug, and nut. He has a screw or two badly in need of tightening. Yet the DFL stood behind Thompson until Lyden’s story broke this weekend.
Thompson’s initial statement attributed Lyden’s story to “an amplified showing of systematic racism[.]” It has become a conspiracy so immense that it extends to the state’s DFL leadership.
That of course includes “light-skinned Native woman” Peggy Flanagan, our lieutenant governor. Calling for Thompson’s resignation on Saturday, Flanagan sacrificed the mention of the credential she otherwise invariably cites when she opines on matters of public policy.

House Democrats are trying to use a massive climate and infrastructure bill to change how Americans get around — by breaking states’ decades-old fondness for building highways.
Legislation the House passed this month is the biggest advance yet in Democrats’ efforts to bake climate policies into transportation, addressing the largest single contributor to the United States’ greenhouse gas output. It would also represent an historic shift away from the roads-first approach to federal transportation spending that has reigned since Dwight Eisenhower created the Interstate Highway System.
Anything to prevent people from going their own way.

I’ve stayed away from the story of DFL state representative John Thompson’s July 4 wee hours traffic stop by a St. Paul police officer for the past few days. Thompson is a racial hustler who rode his call to burn down Hugo, Minnesota last summer all the way to the state legislature in November 2020.
Thompson is the true face of Minnesota’s DFL. He stands for something far larger than himself. He would have you believe it’s racial victimhood. The story of the traffic stop is worth pausing over, as I have done in posts — here (July 10), here (Thompson’s statement, July 13), and here (officer’s bodycam, later that day).
I would like to update my notes in a set of bullet points to assess where we are while trying to give readers enough to get to the heart of the something larger that Thompson represents.

If you had any doubt that big tech has been colluding with the federal government, the feds have confirmed their attack on the first amendment without any apologies.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has jumped into the fray of overplaying government power by publicly calling for all media outlets to edit out or refuse to publish what he calls “misinformation”; this term is a substitute for “information we don’t like or don’t agree with.” His behavior is an attack on the Constitution, an insult to our citizenry, and a demonstration that the federal government will use any tactics, legal or illegal, to achieve its agenda. He issued a 22-page document trying to justify his actions.

Facebook lawyers have filed a petition for recusal to the FTC, asking for chair Lina Khan to not be involved in discussions about pursuing an antitrust case against the social media giant.
New Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan has already faced a recusal petition following the reported start of an antitrust investigation into Amazon’s buying MGM. Now Facebook’s lawyers have done the same as Amazon’s, arguing that Khan’s previous criticisms of the company mean its case cannot receive fair consideration.
According to the Financial Times, in almost 8,000 words, Facebook cites multiple instances of Khan’s comments or actions which it maintains mean she should not be involved in a case.
The Biden administration has engaged in appointing unprecedented numbers of activists to regulate companies that they have spent years hating on.

A publicity stunt could cost Texas Democrats up to $1.75 million after lawmakers went maskless on their privately chartered planes to Washington, D.C., violating Biden administration regulations on air travel.
More than 50 state legislators chartered private flights on Monday in an attempt to prevent the Republican-led legislature from passing a number of election- and gun-related bills. The group posted a photo aboard an airplane showing that at least 18 participants on one flight shunned masks, a violation that carries fines up to $35,000 per offense and potential criminal penalties, should federal officials take action.
Which they won’t. Prediction: Nobody will get fired. Nobody will go to jail. Rules don’t apply to Cloud People; only to Dirt People.
The violation of federal law constitutes the latest legal woes for the Texas Democrats after the state’s governor, Republican Greg Abbott, said he would order the arrest of the legislators when they return home.
Legal woes are legal woes only when the people who are supposed to enforce the law actually enforce the law. Prediction: Nothing will be done. The Crust takes care of its own.

The problem with being rural is that government and a major part of the population aren’t rural and in some cases haven’t got a clue what is going on. To put this in perspective somebody mentioned to me four issues those in authority hold against rural dwellers. They feel that these things are standing in the way of us reaching net zero. We are, ‘car dependent, have low density housing and are hooked on oil burning, and then there is intensive agriculture.’ To be fair it isn’t merely government, the entire political class and a lot of quangos and pressure groups are trapped in the same mindset.
We have the same problem in America. The Crust on the Left Coasts consider Flyover Country (when they think about us at all) as an impediment to whatever Grand Scheme they’ve just come up with rather than a constituency that they’re there to serve.

Because big business can afford robots. Their competitors often cannot.

ucson city officials are planning to ignore Arizona’s new “Second Amendment sanctuary” law, preventing state and local governments from enforcing specific federal gun regulations.
The move made by Democrat Mayor Regina Romero and the Tucson City Council puts the sale of firearms at odds with the Republican-led state.
The southern Arizona city has a long history of enforcing gun laws stricter than the state. The measures have included mandating background checks of guns bought on city property and destroying seized firearms. But over the years, those measures have been challenged after Republican-led efforts enacted laws barring those measures.
