When Hunter came up, like during the impeachment in early 2020, “news” anchors like CNN’s John Berman gushed to Jill Biden: “You have called Hunter the heart and soul of the Biden family.” And: “As a mother how has it affected you?” (He should have said “as a stepmother” on the Facts First network.)

But then came that “aha” moment. Politico reporter Ben Schreckinger has a new book coming out simply titled The Bidens. It promises to explain how “Like the Kennedys before them, the Bidens are a tight-knit, idealistic Irish Catholic clan with good looks, dynastic ambitions, and serious personal problems.”

Politico’s “Playbook” newsletter proclaimed the new book by their reporter “finds evidence that some of the purported Hunter Biden laptop material is genuine, including two emails at the center of last October’s controversy.”

They spent months convincing themselves that a presidential election decided by 42,000 votes in three states, a tied Senate, and a 220-212 House (with 3 vacancies) is the same as FDR’s and LBJ’s supermajorities. Now they are just figuring out that the coalition that put them into office doesn’t agree on much of anything besides the idea that Donald Trump shouldn’t be in the White House.

Now the autumn of 2021 is turning into a reckoning for a Democratic Party that wanted to leverage a squeaker election into fundamental change. Like their predecessors in 1993 and in 2009, frontline House Democrats have to decide whether supporting a liberal agenda is worse for their careers than denying a president of their own party a legislative win. Either way, they lose.

Just days after House members returned to Capitol Hill from their August recess, Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens skipped hearings on President Joe Biden’s record-setting budget to take a vacation.

Fresh from a month-long recess, Stevens married software engineer Rob Gulley in a September 3 ceremony. According to the Democrat’s wedding registry, the couple planned to “head up north right after the wedding” and accepted cash contributions to fund “boating, couples massage, [and] dinner” on the honeymoon.

The trip coincided with two House Committee on Education and Labor markup sessions during which members voted on an array of amendments to Biden’s $3.5 trillion spending plan. Stevens, who has served on the committee since she joined Congress in 2019, missed votes on at least a dozen amendments, including one that would prohibit funds in the bill from going to universities that host Chinese government-funded Confucius Institutes.

Stevens did not return a request for comment.

Washington, D.C., congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.) wrote to the USPS this month to communicate her constituents’ complaints about mail delivery problems. A postal service administrator responded last week, telling Norton that the American Rescue Plan Act, which Democrats passed in March, is to blame for staff shortages that have contributed to the agency’s ineffectiveness.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased employee absences and reduced employee availability, which continue to impact our delivery operations,” executive postmaster Sherry Harper wrote. “The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provides postal employees with up to 600 hours of Emergency Federal Employee Leave in response to the ongoing pandemic. Congress enacted the law with the understandable consequence that employee availability would be affected, particularly for federal agencies.”

Whatever one’s views of the Texas law, the DOJ’s suit is baseless. Its filing demonstrates that under Joe Biden and Merrick Garland, the DOJ has become a hyper-partisan, unprincipled, and lawless tool of the left.

The Department of Justice lacks authority to file any lawsuit unless a statute grants litigation authority to the Attorney General. The DOJ’s complaint cites no statute granting such authority.

None exists. Otherwise the DOJ would have cited it.

Merrick Garland may consider the Texas statute unconstitutional. He may be right. But he lacks the free-standing authority to challenge statutes he deems unconstitutional, no matter how much the Democrats’ leftist base clamors for him to do so.

And the court will throw it out on standing grounds. So this is just Virtue Signaling on the part of the Biden mal-administration. What it does demonstrate, however, is what a terrible pick Garland would have made for the Supreme Court, and how right Republicans in the Senate were to ignore his nomination.
