This opinion piece in the Washington Post carries the title, “Sotomayor saw she couldn’t sway her colleagues. So she talked to us instead.” The article is by law professor Melissa Murray who clerked for Sotomayor at the appeals court level.
I don’t know whether either proposition in the title is accurate, but I can vouch for the second and third words of the second sentence. Sotomayor talked.
She talked and talked. She talked when counsel for the state of Mississippi tried to answer her questions. Counsel was lucky if he could get ten words out without Sotomayor interrupting him.

One of the chief scandals of the 2020 election was the manner in which a group of left-wing former intelligence officials, liberal newspapers and television networks, and social media giants conspired to squash information about Joe Biden’s political corruption–information that, later polls suggested, could have cost him the election if voters had been permitted to learn the facts. The true story has now been told in Miranda Devine’s Laptop From Hell, about the treasure trove of documents, photos and videos that conclusively demonstrate not just Hunter Biden’s depravity, but, far more important, Joe Biden’s efforts to extract bribes from the Communist Chinese. As I have said many times, no one has ever bribed Hunter Biden, a pitiful, drug-addled loser who probably would not be employable were his father not an important government official.
During the 2020 campaign, Jen Psaki tried to sell the ridiculous claim that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “Russian disinformation,” while Hunter himself never denied the authenticity of the laptop or the materials it contained. It helps when you control a once free and diverse press.

Some of California’s largest school districts are dropping D and F grades. Students who don’t learn the material, pass the final exam, or finish homework by the end of the semester would earn an “incomplete” which, I assume, could be converted to at least a “C” later on. Los Angeles Unified, Oakland Unified, Sacramento City Unified, San Diego Unified are among the districts that will make this move.
According this article, which gushes over the decision, the goals are to cause students to “re-engage” in school and to boost their chances of acceptance into the state’s public colleges. It is also designed to “especially” help “Black, Latino and low-income students,” according to the same source. Who would have guessed that?

The American educational system has been infected by the tyranny of mediocrity for decades. The emphasis on strange and unattainable forms of equality, self-esteem (as opposed to balanced emotional health), and ideology have nullified the possibility of good education. Of course, this is not true of all schools. But generally speaking, schooling in America is an exercise in destructive ideology rather than learning.

The issue of leftist indoctrination in the public schools has been with us for a while, but it has exploded into public consciousness during the past year. The main focus has been Critical Race Theory, a toxic compound of racism and anti-Americanism.
Many people are reluctant to believe that the public schools could possibly be as bad as they are being portrayed. Such skepticism is abetted by school officials who generally deny any knowledge of CRT and call it a right-wing conspiracy theory (although a few are honest enough to admit that Critical Race Theory is central to their schools’ curriculum).

The emergence and acceptance of Modern Monetary Theory has turned our economic system upside down. Skeptics of its substance and sustainability have been brushed aside temporarily but expect the MMT experiment to collapse and end in ruin. To us that believe in old school economics, debt matters and is tied directly to interest rates and inflation. Central banks across the world claim the lack of inflation is the key force driving their QE policy and permitting it to continue, however, the moment inflation begins to take root much of their flexibility will be lost. This translates into governments being forced to pay higher interest rates on their debt.

Outgoing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has been widely criticized for seeming and acting out of touch with New Yorkers. And during his final weeks in Gracie Mansion, the intensely unpopular Democratic candidate may unwittingly handicap the already struggling NYC jail Riker’s Island.
To wit, the AP reports that hundreds of city department of corrections’ workers might soon be fired after missing a Tuesday deadline to either get vaccinated or see their waiver approved. The city’s DoC reported 77% of its staff had gotten at least one vaccine dose as of 1700ET on Monday. That’s the lowest rate of any city agency, meaning about 1,900 employees have yet to comply with the mandate or apply for the waiver.

For a long time, I sympathized with Dr. Anthony Fauci. There he was, trying to deal with a pandemic caused by a virus no one knew much about. Sure, he was often wrong about pandemic-related matters, but so were plenty of others, on both sides of the political spectrum and in between, who opined on these subjects. Everyone was shooting in the dark.
But at some point — possibly because of all the attacks on him, some of which were over-the-top, possibly because of a personality flaw or maybe old age — Fauci decided to cast himself as Mr. Science. Criticize him, and you’re anti-science.
In fact, Fauci is a career bureaucrat, not a scientist in any strong sense. Indeed, a true scientist would never view himself as science’s representative and try to win arguments based on such a claim.

I’ve been leaving CovidLand every weekend now for about eight weeks. It started with my vacation in western New York, then continued as I started the “restoration” of the dining room (i.e., removing the old wallpaper and painting) in the family’s western Pennsylvania home. Mom has set the deadline as Thanksgiving, when we expect about a dozen or more family to come to dinner. A far cry from the 30 or more that was a regular feature of my childhood, but a vast improvement over last year’s six.
Funny thing about that. We never asked if we should limit it to six last year. It was before any vaccine, and the family is aging to the point it just seemed prudent not to expose a lot of the older members of the extended family to the risk. Another funny thing. This year mom was shooting for 20, and we didn’t ask anyone about that either. You see, we don’t live in CovidLand.
Somewhere outside the DC Metro area, maybe by Frederick, certainly by Hagerstown where I often stop, I’ve left CovidLand behind. The masks, aside from those working for some sort of corporate affiliate like Dunkin’ Donuts or Wendy’s, are gone. There may be a sign on the door, but nobody is wearing them anymore. And it doesn’t seem to freak anyone out. It’s a wonderful feeling and just serves to highlight how much I hate life in CovidLand.

At a time when President Biden and congressional Democrats are pushing to expand the breadth of entitlements to include free preschool and subsidized child care, little attention is given to the fact that the country’s biggest existing entitlement program—Social Security—is a financial wreck.
The program’s payouts have exceeded revenue since 2010, but the recent past is nowhere near as grim as the future. According to the latest annual report by Social Security’s trustees, the gap between promised benefits and future payroll tax revenue has reached a staggering $59.8 trillion. That gap is $6.8 trillion larger than it was just one year earlier. The biggest driver of that move wasn’t Covid-19, but rather a lowering of expected fertility over the coming decades.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control, garnered much attention a couple of weeks ago when she declared, “Masks can help reduce your chance of #COVID19 infection by more than 80%.” That would be remarkable, if true. As one commentator noted, Dr. Walensky evidently believes that wearing masks is more effective than Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine and not vastly less effective than Pfizer’s or Moderna’s. If that’s really the case, is it wise to spend billions of dollars on a mass vaccination program and to threaten those who aren’t vaccinated with the loss of their livelihood? No one has brought forward a scintilla of evidence supporting Dr. Walensky’s statement. She apparently just pulled it out of the air, knowing that the “fact checkers” would nod and go back to scrutinizing satires posted by the Babylon Bee.

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed into law Assembly Bill 101, making California the first state to require ethnic studies for all high school students. Though cloaked in soothing language about freedom from bias and bigotry, the bill’s history, purpose, and implementing regulations give cause for concern.
The law, which will go into effect on January 1, requires all public high schools and charter schools to offer a one semester course in ethnic studies by the 2025-2026 school year and establishes it as a prerequisite to graduation in 2030.
Prior to statewide adoption, the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Oakland school boards voted to impose ethnic studies as a high school graduation requirement. Ethnic studies is also a graduation requisite at California community colleges, the California State University system, and some University of California campuses. In 2017, Oregon passed a law ordering that ethnic studies concepts be integrated into existing social studies courses for K-12 students. The California law differs by requiring a dedicated course.
