A group of treasure hunters is suing the Department of Justice over “several tons of buried Civil War-era gold” that they claim the FBI may have found and made off with. The haul was supposedly lost or stolen during the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, according to local lore.
The group is called Finders Keepers – and they they wrote in a court filing last week that the FBI has failed to turn over records on its search for the gold. Previously, these records were said to have included 17 videos, but the government is now claiming only 4 such videos exist.
The FBI took place in a March 2018 dig at the supposed site of the gold, but claims they came up with nothing.

Evans on Friday went missing along the Rio Grande after he entered the river to save two illegal immigrants who “appeared to be drowning.” While the migrants survived, Evans presumably drowned. The Texas Military Department told Fox News that the migrants “were involved in illicit transnational narcotics trafficking.”

I really am flummoxed by the ineptitude of President Joe Biden and his chief of staff, Ron Klain. Biden has been a Washington politician for half a century, including eight years as vice president and before that a senior senator. Klain is a consummate Washington insider, having worked for Janet Reno, Al Gore, Biden and others.
How are they this inept?
Last summer, the border got swamped with migrants. They sent Vice President Kamala Harris south of the border and the situation never improved. Activists accused border patrol agents of whipping refugees with horsewhips. The White House condemned the act. But an investigation recently revealed no immigrants were whipped. White House staff have declined to apologize for believing the allegation.
Many border patrol agents are Hispanic. The criticisms of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the border patrol by the left are criticisms of Hispanic voters and their families — a constituency the Democrats are losing. But the White House seems openly hostile to both.

By early April, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. had reached $4.23, up more than 78% in the 14 months since President Joe Biden took office. It’s a political albatross around his neck, but it’s one that his policy team has deliberately placed there. If the president wants to blame someone for higher prices, he need only look at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Biden promised to wage war on the U.S. energy industry. “I want you to look at my eyes,” he said. “I guarantee you. I guarantee you. We’re going to end fossil fuel.” That’s pretty unequivocal. And his policies reflect that.

The impending change in status comes after senior Disney representatives repeatedly criticized the GOP in Florida—currently the ruling party in the state—for legislation that had nothing to do with Disney’s ability to do business in the state. Perhaps not surprisingly, this caused numerous GOP officials to question why Disney was receiving special privileges denied even to Disney’s direct competitors. In the past, Disney would normally be shielded from dangers to its special status, as Disney has famously showered politicians in the state with gifts and campaign cash and other types of special favors that normal people would identify as bribes. Many of the same people who are now voting to repeal Disney’s special status have accepted such “gifts” in the past. But for whatever reason, the political landscape has changed enough in recent years that it appears to many policymakers that it is now more politically rewarding to punish Disney rather than cater to its whims. The effort to strike back at Disney was likely also fueled by national politics and the fact that Disney has long been a platform for leftwing politics through its media outlets like ABC and ESPN.
This special status was granted under a Democrat administration and would to this day not be in question if Disney had simply avoided messing with the bull.

The Supreme Court recently reinstated a Clean Water Act regulation by the Trump administration that helps to prevent states from using reasons other than water quality, such as climate change, to block critical infrastructure and energy projects.
The rule, which specifically addresses states’ abuse of Section 401 of the Clean Water Act, will remain in place pending litigation.

As Florida and its increasingly popular Governor Ron DeSantis (now a front-runner, along with President Trump, to secure the Republican nomination in 2024) seek to respond to (some might say retaliate against) Disney over its opposition to Fla. House Bill 1557 – better known by its leftist nickname the “Don’t Say Gay” bill – the Florida Senate has now passed a bill that would dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District, an entity created in the 1960s that essentially gave the Walt Disney World Resort the same powers as a municipality.

I see that President Calvin Coolidge is in the news, along with his sidekick Warren Gamaliel Harding. Warren was a mediocrity’s mediocrity and was long held to be the worst president of modern times. That was until Jimmy Carter became president and then Barack Obama and now Joe Biden. After Joe’s term, I think we shall retire the trophy.

Politico Playbook reports that the White House is weighing its options in the case holding its mask mandate to be illegal. I thought that they had to go for it and protect their phony baloney jobs protecting public health consistent with the party line over the past two years, but they see the downside and the escape hatch afforded by Judge Mizelle’s ruling yesterday.
Politico has to let us know that they (at Politico) recognize the politics of the situation, of course, but that they have no doubt about the wisdom of the absurd regime we lived under until late yesterday afternoon. If the Biden maskaholics were to seek to squeeze the toothpaste back into the tube, “the administration would risk political blowback on a hot political topic heading into the summer travel season. And it would give voters a clear target of who to blame for mask mandates despite prominent Democrats’ efforts to distance themselves from the unpopular (if scientifically sound) policy.”

Having been coached by Snopes to scope out the different angles that might portray the president in a more flattering light, I have checked out a few views of the intervention of the Easter bunny in Biden’s conversation yesterday on the White House lawn. Each angle confirms that White House staff do not trust the president to wing it and that he does not take their supervision amiss. He dutifully follows the lead of his minders who know him best. What a message.

For the vast majority of Americans, the IRS already knows what we owe in taxes. Instead of telling us, though, the IRS tasks us with filling out a slew of complicated forms and doing a bunch of arithmetic, which drives many people to tax-prep services.
Government regulation invariably leads to a complicated and burdensome web of restrictions and requirements. This, in turn, creates a service industry of ‘experts’ devoted to helping people to cope with that burden. This, in turn, motivates that industry to impede any attempt to make that burden any lighter and easier to navigate without the help of the ‘experts’. It also motivates the businesses in that industry to lobby their favorite politicians to preserve, and if possible extend, the scope of the regulatory burden so as to provide further business opportunities for the existing service industry players. The ordinary citizen invariably winds up with more stress and a much lighter wallet.

Washington DC has just received its fourth busload of ‘undocumented’ migrants from Texas – a ‘special delivery’ from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that contained roughly 10 passengers, according to Fox News.
The buses are being sent by dint of an order from Abbott imposed earlier this month week tasking the Texas Division of Emergency Management with providing charter buses or flights to transport illegal immigrants released into the US by the Feds over to Washington DC.
Greg Abbot has got my vote.
While some in the media have questioned the legality of Gov. Abbott’s order, it’s worth remembering that transportation of illegal migrants from one state to another part of the country isn’t new or unique. In fact, as has been widely reported, the federal government has been transporting thousands of migrants across the country to different states via bus and plane as part of a plan that was initially kept quiet until the whistle was blown by the media.
What’s more, as even MSNBC acknowledges, the trips to Washington DC are “completely voluntary”.

The pandemic is not over yet, according to the new Biden administration Covid czar Ashish Jha speaking on FOX News Sunday and elsewhere this morning. Although his manner is not grating, the message is infuriating.
Also infuriating is the lack of follow-up questions. We don’t expect any better of such Democratic enforcers as George Stephanopoulos (below), but on FOX News Sunday Mike Emanuel was equally lame while Jha blathered liberally on the various Coronavirus fronts including this one (video here).

Greg Pulles was the long-time general counsel of TCF Financial Corporation. (I worked for Greg in that capacity for 12 years.) Greg is something of a Renaissance man, however, in dogged pursuit of truth, beauty, and the American way. Most recently, Greg undertook the review of all 2020 and 2021 Minnesota death certificates which bear the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code for COVID-19 (U07.1).
Having reviewed all 10,903 such certificates, Greg’s analysis supports the conclusion that the vast majority of Minnesotans was not at serious risk of death from COVID-19 and that the campaign of fear and intimidation was simply wrong. Greg’s viral Alpha News column setting forth his analysis is “Who died of COVID-19 in Minnesota?” Subhead: “Only 291, or 2.67% of the 10,903 certificates we examined, were ‘COVID only’ with no comorbidity listed.”

According to TDEM, Abbott’s plan is already working. The agency told Fox News on Monday that many of the communities that originally reached out for support – from the Rio Grande Valley to Terrell County – say the federal government stopped dropping immigrants in their towns since Abbott’s announcement on April 6.

When I was in college I took a business law class. (I needed an elective and it was in a time slot I could attend.) One of the things I learned about was the “reasonably prudent person” standard. Oversimplified, it states the law should be based upon how reasonable person would have acted or what that person would have foreseen. Boiled down, it holds that a normal person should be able to understand the law. At least that is how my instructor (who was a lawyer and an engineer) explained it to the class. Mind, this was back in the 1970s. Things seemed to have changed since then.
The law has grown so complex the reasonably prudent person now needs an army of specialists to navigate through the tangle that the law has become today: lawyers, accountants, medical benefits advisors, financial advisors. This is good for specialists (especially lawyers) who add little value to society when the rules are simple enough to allow average people to live their lives without requiring specialists to navigate the laws. It is not good for society as a whole, especially if that society has a representative government. The need for specialists to interpret the rules reduces productivity and encourages rent-seeking. An increasing fraction of the economy goes into overhead, while activities that add wealth shrink.
There was a mxim of the Common Law that ‘ignorance of the law is no excuse’, but that arose in a time when the law was merely what a sensible person knew to do and not do. Nowadays, ignorance of the law certianly ought to be an excuse.

Watching the “historic” ceremony for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson I could not help recall the woman who should have been the first black woman on the Supreme Court – Judge Janice Rogers Brown.
Unfortunately, Judge Brown’s nomination was scuttled by then-Senator Joe Biden (FJB).
It took a two-year fight to get her approved to the DC Court of Appeals. Then in 2005, when Justice O’Conner retired, Senator Biden warned President George W. Bush that if he nominated the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court, he would filibuster and kill her nomination.

The Texans’ Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and Australians are constantly being blown away with the growing “nameplate” capacity of wind turbines and solar panels to provide electricity, but electricity from renewables have yet to produce anywhere near their projected capacity due to the intermittency and unreliability of breezes and sunshine.
I have always thought that ERCOT was something one got from moldy bread.
