Senate Majority Leader Schumer’s announcement that members of the not especially respected body will be able to wear what they want means that out go the business suits and in go Sen. Fetterman’s basketball shorts. The point of the old dress code was that the Senate was engaged in serious business and its members should look like adult professionals.
But what if its members, like Sen. Kyrsten Sinema or Sen. John Fetterman, aren’t adults? Sinema and Fetterman have both taken to wearing what feels good rather than attire that treats the offices they hold with due seriousness. And they are just flaunting what so many members of Congress already believe: that the office is all about their self-expression and about them.

Kansas City voters sensibly rejected spending money on light rail at least seven times. But that common sense apparently didn’t extent to streetcars, which are an even dumber idea than light rail as streetcars are slower than buses, far more expensive, and can’t get out of their own way if one breaks down.

Not his first rodeo.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife Nadine have been indicted in New York for allegedly accepting bribes in relation to an allegedly corrupt relationship they had with three businessmen from their home state. The indictment also charges three businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and Fred Daibes.
“Those bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value,” reads the indictment.
…
In June of last year, federal agents searched Menendez’s New Jersey home, where they found “fruits” of the pair’s “corrupt bribery agreement” with the three businessman – including over $480,000 in cash, some of which was stuffed in envelopes, and $70,000 in Nadine Menendez’s safe deposit box.
They also found gold bars worth over $100,000, “provided by either Hana or Daibes.”

More accurately, clothes reflect the man. John Fetterman dresses in a manner that is deliberately slovenly and inappropriate, and that appears intended to mock the institution of which he is a member. But it’s not just that: the rest of his conduct is similarly inappropriate and demeaning to the office he holds.
When Fetterman speaks, his brain damage is evident, and he can be an object of sympathy. But when he posts on social media, the sympathy factor is gone. He comes across like a troubled 15-year-old boy who never grew up.

Washington Free Beacon.
It pays to be a politician—literally.
That’s the argument of conservative commentator Matt Lewis’s new book Filthy Rich Politicians, lambasting the culture of corruption in politics that stems from elected officials monetizing their power in the most flagrant possible ways.
The timing of the book’s publication comes at a populist moment, with the hit song “Rich Men North of Richmond” having topped the Billboard charts and reflecting widespread angst about the growing chasm between the haves and have-nots. Lewis, refreshingly, is able to criticize the excesses of the ruling class without getting mired in the self-defeating grievance that defines so much of today’s populist movement.
Through outlining too-good-to-be-true book deals to hiring family members on staff to capitalizing on all-too-timely stock trades, Lewis takes readers through an eye-opening tour of lawmakers’ conflicts of interest that leave so many Americans jaded toward the Swamp that is Washington, D.C.
As Lewis puts it: “The rich get elected and the elected get rich.”

Want a soda? You’ll pay more for one in Philadelphia, because five years ago, local politicians decided to tax it.
They’re “protecting” people, they said. The tax would “reduce obesity” and “lower diabetes rates.”
But the politicians’ main goal was to bring in more money, which they said would “fund early childhood education” and “help a lot of families.”

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy says he would eliminate five federal agencies if elected.
Ramaswamy, a successful entrepreneur and businessman, says he is eyeing the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Education, and the Commerce Department, Axios first reported Wednesday. The Republican hopeful also targets the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“The CEO, the leader of the executive branch, does indeed have the authority to decide who is and is not hired in the executive branch,” Ramaswamy said Wednesday in a speech at the America First Policy Institute. “Speaking as a CEO, if somebody works for you and you can’t fire them, that means they don’t work for you. It means you work for them.”

Despite a government program set up in 2017 meant to dispose of Arkansas’ used tires while being self-funding, these eyesores—and some argue, health hazards—are literally piling up around the state.
This was completely predictable.
Yet no amount of failure can convince even the best-intentioned politicians and bureaucrats that when it comes to matters of the economy, their ability to plan almost always falls short. The so-called Tire Accountability Program is just one more example.

Air Force Chief of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr, Biden’s nominee to replace Milley as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had signed off on a memo to impose a 43% quota for white male officers in the Air Force. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has questioned the credibility of a doctor’s notes asserting that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is in good health, according to comments reported by Politico on Tuesday.
McConnell, age 81, has faced several public health scares in 2023, the most recent being when he froze while speaking with reporters in Kentucky on Aug. 30.
Paul, a physician and ophthalmologist, suggested that McConnell is suffering from a neurological issue, even as the attending physician of Congress has denied that McConnell’s freeze was prompted by serious health concerns, according to a report by Politico.
“You know I’ve practiced medicine for over 20 years, I’ve seen people who are dehydrated. What’s occurring, from what I’ve seen, is a neurological event, it’s not dehydration,” Paul said, according to Politico. “I think my advice would be to be more forthcoming with what’s going on.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell did not suffer a stroke or seizure after his latest freeze in public, according to a doctor’s note released by his office on Tuesday and shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
McConnell, R-Ky., 81, froze during a press conference in Kentucky on Aug. 30 and was unable to continue speaking before being led away, the second such instance that has occurred in public. After McConnell’s office published a note from the office of the Attending Physician of United States Congress that cleared him to continue his public schedule, his office published a second note on Tuesday that clarified the freeze was not the result of a seizure or stroke.
And if you believe that one, they’ll tell you another one.

We are observing the second anniversary of one of America’s worst foreign policy fiascos, the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. It was on August 26, 2021, when 13 American Marines and at least 170 Afghan civilians were murdered by a Taliban bomber at the Kabul airport. To say that the anniversary has passed quietly is an understatement.
A writer for the Atlantic, Franklin Foer, has an upcoming book on the withdrawal called The Last Politician. An excerpt was made public today, and several media outlets covered it.

Police recruits join the force to help others and fight crime. Research confirms it. But priorities changed when sheriff’s deputies detained Eh Wah in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, and found more than $53,000 in his car.
Law enforcement training kicked in, and the purpose of the traffic stop switched from public safety to raising revenue. The deputies seized the cash and spent the next six hours interrogating Eh Wah, looking for any excuse to justify civil forfeiture, a process that allows the government to take and keep cash, cars and other assets without a criminal conviction.
Oklahoma agencies normally keep quiet about civil forfeiture, which is why the state ranks among the worst in the nation for civil forfeiture transparency. Oklahoma publishes no statewide reports, conducts no regular audits, and tracks only limited metrics.
The silence is strategic. The more people learn about civil forfeiture, the less they like it. But Oklahoma police and prosecutors have voiced opposition in recent weeks to H.R. 1525, the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Act (FAIR), a bill that would reform federal civil forfeiture.
